Petrol pumps shut nationwide from August 15

Pakistan’s petrol dealers have announced an indefinite nationwide strike from August 15 after talks with the government failed to resolve their concerns over the fuel pricing mechanism.

The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) said on Thursday that negotiations with government representatives did not produce a breakthrough. The association maintained that its major demand regarding the daily adjustment system for petroleum product prices remained unresolved.

PPDA Chairman Malik Khuda Baksh said the government was unwilling to change the existing mechanism during the talks. However, officials reportedly assured the dealers that an increase of Rs1.34 in their profit margin would be considered, subject to approval from the federal cabinet.

The assurance failed to convince the dealers to withdraw their strike call.

According to the association, its delegation left the negotiations following the unsuccessful talks and travelled back to Karachi. An emergency meeting of the PPDA executive committee was also convened to discuss the situation.

The association subsequently reaffirmed its decision to shut petrol pumps across the country from Saturday morning.

The proposed shutdown could create difficulties for motorists and businesses if it continues for an extended period, particularly as another major transport strike is already affecting movement of goods across Pakistan.

The All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has also decided to continue its nationwide strike after negotiations with the federal and Sindh governments failed to resolve transporters’ demands.

Alliance President Malik Shahzad Awan said the strike had entered its sixth day and would continue until the government formally accepted the transporters’ demands and issued the required notification.

He accused both the federal and provincial governments of failing to take the issue seriously. Awan said transporters would not end their protest merely on the basis of verbal assurances.

At the same time, he appealed to transporters to remain peaceful and avoid blocking roads during the protest.

The petrol dealers had initially announced their planned shutdown earlier this week after giving the government a 72-hour deadline to address their concerns. They had warned that the existing fuel pricing arrangement was making it increasingly difficult for dealers to operate their businesses.

The dispute centres largely on the mechanism used to determine petroleum prices and the margins available to petrol pump owners.

Earlier, another petrol dealers’ body had postponed a planned nationwide shutdown following talks with the petroleum ministry. The dealers had called for reforms to the fuel pricing mechanism and expressed concerns over delays in implementing previously agreed measures.

West Indies take 29-run lead after bowling out Pak…

Pakistan were dismissed for 282 runs in their first innings on the third day of the opening Test against the West Indies, leaving the hosts with a 29-run first-innings lead. Despite a determined century from captain Shan Masood, Pakistan failed to build on a solid overnight position as the West Indies bowling attack wrapped up the innings effectively. Resuming the day at 199 for 3, Pakistan appeared well placed to post a competitive total. However, the batting lineup struggled against disciplined bowling, losing wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq, none of the remaining batters managed to make a significant contribution. Shan Masood led the innings with a composed 109 runs, anchoring Pakistan’s batting effort with patience and confidence. His century proved to be the standout performance for the visitors and demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure in challenging conditions. Imam-ul-Haq also made an important contribution, scoring 63 runs and sharing a valuable partnership with the captain that gave Pakistan a strong foundation. After the dismissal of the top-order pair, Pakistan’s middle and lower order failed to capitalize on the platform. Regular breakthroughs from the West Indies bowlers prevented the visitors from reaching a larger total, and the innings came to an end after 80.1 overs. The West Indies bowling attack was led by Justin Greaves, who delivered an outstanding spell to claim five wickets. His consistent line and length troubled Pakistan’s batters throughout the innings and played a key role in restricting the total. Veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach and pace bowler Shamar Joseph picked up two wickets each, while Jayden Seales added one wicket to complete the innings. With a 29-run lead, the West Indies gained a slight advantage heading into their second innings. However, the match remains evenly balanced, and Pakistan’s bowlers will now aim to make early breakthroughs to keep the contest alive. As the Test progresses, both teams will look to capitalize on every opportunity in what promises to be an intriguing battle. Pakistan will be encouraged by Shan Masood’s excellent century but will also recognize the need for stronger contributions from the rest of the batting lineup if they hope to secure victory in the series opener.

Health Professionals, Community leaders strongly condemn transfer of renowned surgeon

THATTA — Senior medical professionals and community representatives have strongly condemned the sudden transfer of eminent surgeon Professor Dr. Mashooque Ali Hajani from Civil Hospital Makli to Civil Hospital Sujawal, calling the decision an unjustified move and a conspiracy against the hospital’s recent healthcare advancements. In a joint statement, prominent health leaders—including Dr. Sugra Parveen Uqaili, Dr. Ahmed Khan Zardari, Dr. Habib Jokhio, and Dr. Gul Qazi—expressed grave concern over the transfer, warning that it will derail the major improvements made in the Surgical Ward and cause severe hardship to poor and underprivileged patients who rely heavily on these services. The medical fraternity pointed out that prior to Dr. Hajani’s arrival, the surgical unit in Thatta District was severely under-resourced and largely limited to minor procedures such as circumcisions. Through Dr.Mashoque’s tireless dedication and technical expertise, the department was rebuilt into a fully functional unit capable of performing major and complex operations, including laparotomies, directly within the district. “The transfer of such a sincere, highly capable, and dedicated surgeon is detrimental to both the institution and the public interest,” the statement read. “Depriving Civil Hospital Makli of his services will only result in medical delays and hardship for patients who cannot afford private or out-of-district care.” The delegation has urgently appealed to the senior leadership of the Health Department and relevant authorities to immediately revoke the transfer order, allowing Professor Dr. Mashooque Ali Hajani to continue his transformative work at Civil Hospital Makli.

Police kill suspected mastermind of Hangu attack

HANGU: Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said on Sunday they had killed the alleged mastermind behind last week’s deadly attack on the Khazina Banda police check post during a security operation near Chapri Naryab in Hangu district. According to police officials, security personnel launched the operation after receiving intelligence about the movement of 15 to 18 suspected militants in the area. During the exchange of fire, authorities said a high-value militant wanted in connection with the Khazina Banda attack was killed. Officials identified the deceased as the alleged planner of the assault on the police check post, which took place on July 29 and resulted in one of the deadliest recent attacks on law enforcement personnel in the district. Police said the earlier attack claimed the lives of 10 police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while 28 others were injured. The assault prompted an extensive search operation across Hangu and surrounding areas to trace those involved. Authorities said intelligence-based operations have since been intensified to dismantle militant networks operating in the region. Security forces are continuing search and clearance operations to locate any remaining suspects believed to have escaped during Sunday’s action. The killing of the alleged mastermind is being viewed by officials as a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the Khazina Banda attack. However, police have not yet released the identity of the deceased or provided further operational details. The July 29 attack had shocked the province and renewed concerns over militant violence targeting security personnel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It also triggered a strong response from law enforcement agencies, which vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Officials reiterated that operations against militant groups would continue until all those involved in attacks on security forces are apprehended or neutralized. They emphasized that intelligence-led operations remain a key part of efforts to maintain law and order and prevent further attacks in the region. Investigations into the Khazina Banda incident are ongoing, while authorities continue to assess evidence collected from both the attack site and the latest operation.
