Narathiwat Checkpoint Attack Claims Lives of Five Security Personnel

The Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Command has paid tribute to five soldiers from the 45th Ranger Forces Regiment Task Force who were killed in a gun and pipe-bomb attack at the Bukeh Sami Checkpoint in Ra-ngae district, Narathiwat province. The attack occurred on the evening of July 22 while the personnel were on duty protecting residents and maintaining security in the area.

The fallen soldiers were Sergeant Major First Class Theerayoot Somakerd, Volunteer Ranger Wimol Dapthong, Volunteer Ranger Nathasit Kaeosena, Volunteer Ranger Solahuding Pi, and Volunteer Ranger Sakeereeya Jehna. Authorities described their deaths as a reminder of the dangers faced by security personnel serving in the southern border provinces to protect lives and property.

The command extended its condolences to the families of the five soldiers and confirmed they will receive all eligible rights, benefits, welfare assistance, and compensation. Authorities are also working to identify and apprehend those responsible so they can face legal action.

The command stated that the soldiers carried out their duties with courage, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility despite the continuing threat of violence in the region.

    Mufti Jana Mir was killed in a targeted explosion near Rustam Bazaar in Wana, the main town of Lower South Waziristan, on Monday, according to police officials. Mufti Jana Mir was widely respected for his efforts to promote peace and social harmony in South Waziristan. He regularly participated in peace initiatives and remained actively involved in campaigns aimed at improving law and order in the region. He was also a regular speaker at the National Peace Jirga, where he called for unity, dialogue and lasting peace. Community members regarded him as an influential religious figure who consistently encouraged peaceful coexistence and opposed violence.

    Petrol, Diesel prices rise as govt announces fresh…

    ISLAMABAD: The federal government has increased prices of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), citing adjustments under the country’s petroleum pricing mechanism. According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division of the Ministry of Energy, the price of petrol has gone up by 45 paisa per litre, while high-speed diesel has become Rs1.16 more expensive per litre. Following the latest revision, petrol will now cost Rs325.43 per litre, compared with the previous rate of Rs324.98. The price of high-speed diesel has risen from Rs382.79 to Rs383.95 per litre. The revised rates were determined after the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) reviewed petroleum product prices in line with the government’s pricing framework, which takes international oil market movements and other relevant costs into account. The latest increase comes shortly after the previous price review, when the government raised the HSD rate by 54 paisa per litre while reducing petrol prices by 94 paisa per litre. The new prices will apply from Friday, August 14, as the government continues its periodic adjustments to petroleum rates in response to changes in global energy markets and domestic cost factors.

    LAHORE: Following the successful computerized ballot held on June 23, 2026, the CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative has entered its next major milestone with JazzCash commencing digital disbursements to selected widows and orphans across Punjab. The launch of digital payments marks the successful transition from beneficiary selection to financial assistance delivery, completing another key phase of one of Punjab’s most technologically advanced social welfare initiatives. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card is a collaborative initiative of the Government of Punjab, Zakat & Ushr Department, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), NADRA, Punjab Social Protection Authority (PSPA), Urban Unit, JazzCash, and other stakeholders to digitize the complete lifecycle of welfare assistance from citizen application and eligibility verification to transparent beneficiary selection and digital financial disbursement. During the computerized ballot ceremony, officials acknowledged the successful completion of the project’s technology implementation. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) Rashid Iqbal Nasrullah appreciated the PITB team for its continuous technical support throughout the implementation of the initiative within stringent timelines. He also specially acknowledged the prompt guidance and support extended by PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf at various stages of the project whenever required. Secretary, Zakat & Ushr Department, Irfan Ahmad Sandhu also commended the dedicated efforts of PITB in designing, developing, and operationalizing the comprehensive digital ecosystem supporting the Programme. He appreciated PITB’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of all assigned deliverables despite challenging timelines. Participants observed that the CM Punjab Rahmat Card is the first initiative of its kind undertaken by the Zakat & Ushr Department in terms of both scale and technological sophistication. By replacing conventional manual processes with integrated digital workflows, the Programme has introduced unprecedented levels of transparency, efficiency, accountability, and speed in the delivery of welfare assistance. As the technology implementation partner, PITB designed, developed, and operationalized the complete digital platform supporting the initiative. The digital ecosystem includes an online citizen application portal, an Android mobile application, a dedicated helpline for application support, inquiries, and complaints, a Beneficiary Management System, a multi-agency digital verification engine integrated with NADRA and Punjab Socio-Economic Registry (PSER) databases, automated scrutiny and eligibility determination workflows, a computerized district-wise balloting mechanism, and real-time monitoring and decision-support administrative dashboards. The end-to-end digital workflow enabled citizens to submit applications online, which were then verified through multiple government databases, assessed against approved eligibility criteria, allocated according to district quotas, and finally selected through a transparent computerized ballot before being transferred for digital disbursement through JazzCash. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative stands as a successful example of how digital public infrastructure can enable multiple government institutions to operate through a unified technology platform, facilitating data-driven decision-making, automated eligibility verification, transparent Programme execution, and secure digital payments. The project reinforces the Government of Punjab’s commitment to delivering technology-enabled, scalable, and accountable citizen services that improve the lives of vulnerable segments of society.

    ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, during which the two sides discussed recent regional developments and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.     ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed a comprehensive technical audit of the billing systems of electricity distribution companies (Discos), reaffirming that reforming Pakistan’s power sector remains one of the government’s top priorities. Chairing a high-level meeting on the performance of the Power Division, the prime minister acknowledged that distribution companies had shown noticeable improvement but stressed that further reforms were essential to enhance efficiency and service delivery. He described the nationwide installation of smart electricity meters as a key step toward modernising the sector and improving transparency. Shehbaz Sharif also called for strict action against electricity theft, instructing authorities to strengthen enforcement mechanisms at every level. He ordered the Power Division to establish clear performance benchmarks for distribution companies, supported by measurable targets and specific implementation timelines. To encourage better performance, the prime minister announced that the country’s best-performing distribution company would receive formal recognition and awards, promoting healthy competition among power utilities. Addressing the issue of prolonged electricity shortages in rural areas, he directed officials to prepare village-level solarisation projects, saying decentralised solar energy systems could reduce pressure on the national electricity grid while improving access to reliable power. During the meeting, officials informed the prime minister that technical and commercial losses across distribution companies had continued to decline. Islamabad, Lahore and Gujranwala electricity companies recorded the lowest transmission and distribution losses during the last fiscal year, while power utilities in Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Multan achieved full recovery of billed electricity dues in the 2025–26 fiscal year. The meeting was also told that specialised Disco Support Units have been established in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Lahore, Multan and Hazara to combat electricity theft, improve bill recovery and resolve technical challenges more effectively. Officials further briefed the prime minister that the first phase of the Asset Performance Management System (APMS) at the transformer level is expected to be completed by the end of September. The system is designed to improve monitoring of transformers, helping reduce both power theft and load-shedding. In addition, the government is considering the installation of 16.2 million Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) single-phase smart meters across the Multan, Lahore, Peshawar, Hazara and Quetta regions as part of its broader strategy to modernise Pakistan’s electricity distribution network.

    Makkah Pact Seen as key to regional stability

      LAHORE, Aug 12 (APP): Senior journalists, defence analysts and experts have described the Makkah Joint Defence Pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as a significant step towards regional peace, collective security and stronger defence cooperation. The views emerged during a panel discussion titled “Makkah Pact: Peace, Security and Stability”, organised by the Press Information Department (PID) Lahore. PID Lahore Director General Shafqat Abbas said the agreement aimed to strengthen peace, stability and mutual trust rather than target any country. He stressed the importance of diplomacy, dialogue and cooperation in resolving regional disputes. He said Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye brought different strengths and experiences to the partnership, creating opportunities for cooperation in defence, diplomacy, trade and investment. Abbas also said Pakistan’s national strength should extend beyond defence and include education, science, technology, skilled human resources and a strong economy. He urged the country to turn its defence capabilities into broader economic gains through research, skills development and increased exports. Senior journalist and analyst Mujeebur Rehman Shami highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in defence and diplomacy but called for greater investment in education, science, technology and skills. He also stressed the need to increase exports and improve economic productivity. Journalist Salman Ghani said the three countries offered complementary strengths, with Pakistan contributing its defence capabilities, Saudi Arabia its economic influence and Türkiye its advanced defence industry and technology. He said the pact could also encourage investment and economic cooperation. Defence analyst Col (retd) Abid said Pakistan’s leadership and military diplomacy played an important role in developing the agreement. He noted that its impact could extend beyond defence to economic, diplomatic and strategic affairs. Other speakers, including Dr Faleha Afzal, Malik Salman, Dr Farzana Riaz and journalist Noorullah, called for greater unity among Muslim countries and urged Pakistan to pursue economic development alongside defence preparedness. The participants agreed that stronger cooperation between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye could contribute to regional peace and stability. They also emphasised dialogue, common interests and coordinated efforts to address shared challenges. At the end of the session, Shafqat Abbas thanked the participants and said such discussions helped promote informed public debate on important national and international issues.
