PM, Dar hand over official gifts to Toshakhana

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and several other senior government officials received a total of 21 official gifts during the April to June period, according to the latest Toshakhana record released by the Cabinet Division.

The official record shows that the prime minister and deputy prime minister were among the senior officeholders who received gifts from foreign dignitaries and officials during official meetings and state engagements. In line with the Toshakhana rules, both leaders deposited all the gifts with the Toshakhana instead of retaining them.

According to the Cabinet Division, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received several gifts, including a decorative sugar bowl, a luxury pen, a model of Masjid-e-Nabawi (PBUH), a shield and a tie. He also received a model of the Chinese Space Station, a commemorative cup, a wristwatch and another shield during separate official engagements.

The records further show that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar received a Chinese leather belt, a model of an Egyptian statue and a pair of cufflinks as official gifts. These items were also submitted to the Toshakhana in accordance with the prescribed procedure.

The Cabinet Division said all gifts received by the prime minister and deputy prime minister have been deposited with the Toshakhana. It added that the process of assessing the monetary value of the gifts is currently in progress. The estimated value will be determined before the record is finalized, following the standard rules governing official gifts received by public officeholders.

The Toshakhana maintains a record of gifts presented to government officials by foreign leaders, diplomats and visiting delegations during official visits and meetings. Under the applicable rules, such gifts must be declared and deposited, while their valuation is carried out through the prescribed official mechanism.

The extreme weather has forced many people to seek shelter in air conditioned shopping centres, cafes and other indoor spaces. In Seoul, residents gathered in public places with cooling facilities to escape the dangerous heat. Office worker Ju Dong Yeol said staying outdoors had become almost impossible and that spending time in air conditioned buildings was the only practical way to cope with the soaring temperatures. Authorities have issued emergency heatwave alerts in more than 20 areas across the country. The warning system, introduced this year, is activated when the expected heat index reaches 38 degrees Celsius or when actual temperatures are forecast to climb to at least 39 degrees Celsius. Weather officials advised residents to stop all outdoor activities immediately, remain in cool locations and drink plenty of water to reduce the risk of heat related illnesses. The Korea Meteorological Administration also warned that indoor spaces without air conditioning could become dangerous during the ongoing heatwave. Officials encouraged people, particularly children, older adults and those with health conditions, to use designated cooling centres whenever possible. Weather data show that South Korea has experienced a sharp increase in the number of extremely hot days over recent decades. During the past five years, the country has recorded an average of 19 heatwave days each year, compared with only eight days annually during the 1970s. A heatwave day is officially defined as one in which temperatures reach at least 33 degrees Celsius. The severe weather has also disrupted sporting events. South Korea’s professional baseball league cancelled a second consecutive game in the city of Changwon after temperatures climbed to 39.5 degrees Celsius. The Korea Baseball Organisation said the decision was made to protect the health and safety of players, officials and spectators while the heatwave warning remained in effect.       An initial investigation by the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has shed new light on the fire that killed 15 newborn babies at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). According to the preliminary report prepared by the PIMS administration, a nebulizer attached to an incubator, used to deliver or monitor oxygen for a newborn, reportedly burst inside the NICU. The incident caused the oxygen to catch fire, triggering a blaze in the unit. The report says the fire initially remained limited but spread rapidly. Thick smoke entered the babies’ breathing system through the oxygen pipeline, while the fire and heat also affected the infants. The preliminary findings indicate that the newborns died from a combination of oxygen supply failure, smoke inhalation and burn injuries. Earlier, rescue officials and hospital authorities had attributed the fire to an air-conditioner compressor explosion in the gynecology ward. They also said the presence of oxygen cylinders contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. One newborn reportedly survived the incident. The tragedy has raised serious questions about safety arrangements and emergency response at the hospital. The bodies of the deceased newborns have been handed over to their families. Parents and eyewitnesses alleged that hospital staff were not present in the nursery when the fire broke out and claimed that the doors remained closed, making it difficult to evacuate the babies. They also questioned the response time of rescue teams. PIMS Executive Director, however, rejected claims that staff had abandoned the NICU. He said two doctors, four nurses and other staff members were present in the intensive care unit at the time of the incident. He also maintained that the hospital had an adequate fire safety system. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) said its rescue teams reached the hospital soon after receiving the emergency call. According to the authority, firefighters brought the blaze under control and immediately shifted the affected newborns to the intensive care unit for treatment. The district administration has formed an eight-member inquiry committee to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess whether safety protocols were properly followed. The committee has been directed to submit its findings within 24 hours. The conflicting accounts about the source of the fire have increased pressure for a detailed and impartial investigation. The final inquiry is expected to establish how the fire started, why it spread so quickly, whether the oxygen system played a role and whether the hospital staff and emergency services responded according to established safety procedures.

The company confirmed that it has referred the matter to the relevant legal authorities and is pursuing legal action against those allegedly involved.
