New investigation team makes key decisions in Kara…

A meeting of the investigation team probing the death of Karachi-based young businessman Mir Raza has concluded at Ferozabad Police Station, where several important decisions were taken regarding the ongoing investigation.

According to investigative sources, different tasks have been assigned to members of the committee as part of the inquiry. The family of Mir Raza will be formally interviewed and their statements will be recorded. The team has also decided to record the statements of 21 individuals who were taken into custody during the investigation.

Following the meeting, members of the investigation committee left for the crime scene to inspect the location and collect additional evidence. The former investigating officer will also accompany the new investigation team during the visit.

Meanwhile, the new investigation team has contacted the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in connection with the case. The team has requested details of Mir Raza’s social media profiles and digital accounts to examine his online activity and determine whether it could provide any clues regarding his disappearance and death.

The new team has written four letters to the NCCIA. In one of the letters, the agency was asked to conduct a forensic examination of Mir Raza’s smartwatch. The smartwatch was handed over to the NCCIA a day earlier for examination.

However, the victim’s family has requested that the forensic examination of the smartwatch be conducted at a forensic laboratory in Lahore rather than by the NCCIA. The family’s lawyer, Jibran Nasir, said the smartwatch had remained in the possession of the former head of the investigation committee for several days, raising concerns about possible tampering. He demanded that the forensic examination be carried out in Lahore to ensure transparency and credibility.

Earlier, on August 12, Dr Usama Sheikh, who conducted Mir Raza’s initial post-mortem examination, was removed from his position as a medico-legal officer. Officials said the doctor had committed serious errors during the initial post-mortem. He will appear before officials during an inquiry into the matter.

A preliminary medical report following the exhumation and second post-mortem of Mir Raza indicated signs of physical trauma on his body. The report stated that the gunshot wound was smaller at the back and larger at the front, suggesting that the bullet may have entered from the rear.

The report also revealed that Mir Raza had suffered fractured ribs and multiple injuries to his head and face. A fracture and wound approximately 12 centimetres long were found on his right thigh, while blood stains were also detected in tissues in the lower part of his body.

The preliminary findings obtained after his exhumation on August 8 differed significantly from the initial post-mortem report. Evidence of a deep injury and fracture was found in his jaw, while injuries were also detected on his nasal bone and various parts of his face.

Investigative sources said 17 samples were collected during the exhumation. Samples from Mir Raza’s parents were also obtained for DNA matching. The samples will be submitted to the forensic laboratory of the University of Karachi. After the samples were collected, Mir Raza was reburied on the same day, August 8.

Mir Raza Ali Khan went missing from the PECHS area of Karachi on July 28. He left home at 4:09 a.m. in an online taxi, and his body was recovered from Gulistan-e-Johar two days later.

Police said the body was found in a severely damaged condition and had a gunshot wound to the chest. His social media accounts had reportedly been shut down one day before his body was recovered.

According to Mir Raza’s father, his son was scheduled to marry on August 30 at Bait-ul-Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and had been very happy about starting a new chapter in his life.

Hamas accepts breakthrough disarmament framework as US announces Gaza peace deal

US President Donald Trump announced that the international Board of Peace has reached a historic agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in the Gaza Strip. Under the proposed framework, Hamas has agreed to the phased inventorying, storage, and decommissioning of its heavy and light weaponry under Palestinian supervision, marking the first time in the group’s history that it has accepted a formal plan to disarm completely. The agreement forms the core of the second phase of the US-brokered 20-point peace plan designed to end the long-running war. According to the terms, Israeli military forces will gradually withdraw from Gaza as disarmament milestones are met, transferring local security to an International Stabilisation Force operating alongside a newly formed Palestinian police force. Civil administration will simultaneously transition to a technocratic governing body, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza. The breakthrough follows months of intensive negotiations in Cairo mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. Internal momentum within Hamas shifted following leadership elections that elevated Gaza-based leader Khalil al-Hayya, alongside mounting pressure from the severe humanitarian crisis affecting over two million residents in the enclave. Senior Hamas officials confirmed their acceptance of the framework and indicated an official statement would be issued shortly, expecting mediators and the Board of Peace to guarantee Israeli compliance with the withdrawal timeline. Uncertainties remain regarding full implementation, as Israeli officials have expressed skepticism and maintained that complete demilitarisation remains a non-negotiable prerequisite. US officials acknowledged that whilst full disarmament and troop withdrawal could take up to a year, the consensus represents the most viable operational roadmap for ending the conflict to date.

Amitabh responds with a trademark smirk, telling Aamir that the game will not be easy because contestants genuinely have to think before answering. The new season marks the 18th instalment of Kaun Banega Crorepati. The much-awaited season is scheduled to premiere on Monday, August 10, at 9 PM on Sony Entertainment Television and SonyLIV. With Amitabh’s witty exchanges, Preity’s return to the show and appearances by Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan, the premiere episode is expected to offer plenty of entertaining moments for viewers.

Cambridge to review hiring after Arday resignation

The University of Cambridge has announced a review of its procedures for appointing senior academics following the resignation of Professor Jason Arday amid allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding parts of his academic record. Cambridge said an ongoing investigation into Arday’s qualifications, previous appointments and tenure would inform the wider review of how senior academic positions are filled. Arday, a professor of sociology of education and fellow of Jesus College, stepped down after allegations emerged concerning his academic work and claims made about his professional background. He has rejected accusations of deliberate plagiarism and denied fabricating his achievements. The controversy has prompted calls from academics for an independent investigation into how Arday was appointed to a senior position at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Priyamvada Gopal, a Cambridge professor who is among those calling for an independent inquiry, said the controversy had caused significant reputational damage to the university. She argued that Cambridge should not investigate itself and urged the involvement of academics from outside the institution. Cambridge said it was aware of the concerns surrounding the case and would continue examining the circumstances of Arday’s appointment and tenure. Jesus College welcomed the university’s decision to review its appointment procedures. The college said Arday’s position as a fellow depended on his university appointment and that it relied on Cambridge to verify academic credentials. The University of Glasgow, where Arday served as Professor of Sociology of Education from January 2022 to March 2023, has also launched its own review. The university said the review would establish the facts surrounding his appointment and identify lessons for the future. The controversy began after US researcher Nathan Cofnas raised allegations that sections of Arday’s PhD dissertation had been copied from earlier academic works. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his doctorate, said it had investigated the plagiarism allegations last year and rejected them. The university maintained that position and said his PhD remains valid. Further questions have since been raised about some of Arday’s academic publications and claims on his CV. Some institutions where he reportedly claimed to have held academic positions have denied that he occupied those roles. Arday has acknowledged errors in his academic work but denied intentionally plagiarising material. He has suggested that autism and inadequate supervision during the early stages of his academic career may have contributed to mistakes. He has also rejected allegations that he fabricated his personal achievements and has previously argued that some of the criticism directed at him was racially motivated. The controversy has also raised questions about how allegations against Arday were handled. Times Higher Education reporter Jack Grove was investigated by the Metropolitan Police following a complaint of harassment after he contacted Arday about the plagiarism allegations. The investigation was later closed. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley subsequently apologised and said the complaint should have been screened out at an earlier stage. Attention has also turned to Arday’s forthcoming memoir, “Great and Unfortunate Things”, which is scheduled for publication next week. Arday previously claimed in an interview that he had received a £1.4 million advance for the memoir, although he did not specify the currency. Publishing industry figures have questioned the size of the alleged payment. Publisher Simon & Schuster has said it intends to proceed with publication. Reports have also identified differences between an earlier proposal for the memoir and the final manuscript, including changes to the timing and description of some events in Arday’s life.

North West apologises to fans after debut Kimokawa…

North West has addressed fans after the unexpected cancellation of her first headlining tour, expressing disappointment over a setback that came just days before the opening performance. The 13-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West was scheduled to launch the Kimokawaii Tour alongside rapper Molly Santana on August 5 in Dallas. The North American tour was announced shortly after the release of North’s debut EP, N-O-R-T-H 4EVR, and was expected to mark a major milestone in her budding music career.  However, fans recently noticed that the Dallas opening show and the August 17 stop in Toronto had been marked as cancelled on Ticketmaster. At the same time, the tour’s official website became unavailable, fueling speculation about the future of the concert series. As of now, no official explanation has been given for the cancellations, although one San Francisco show was still listed by its venue at the time of reporting.  Following the announcement, both North and Molly Santana shared messages expressing how saddened they were by the development. While neither artist revealed the reason behind the decision, they thanked fans for their support and said they hoped to perform together in the future. Their statements reflected disappointment rather than frustration, with both acknowledging the excitement that had surrounded the tour. The Kimokawaii Tour was set to take the pair across the United States and Canada with 14 scheduled dates, including performances in Houston, New York, Chicago, Boston, Phoenix and Los Angeles. The tour had generated significant interest after North’s successful festival appearances earlier this year and the release of her debut project in May.  North’s music career has steadily gained momentum over the past year. In addition to releasing N-O-R-T-H 4EVR, she has performed at major music festivals and collaborated with established artists, attracting attention beyond her famous family. Her mother, Kim Kardashian, had enthusiastically promoted the tour on social media, encouraging fans to attend the shows.  Although the cancellation has disappointed fans eager to see North’s first headlining performances, many have responded with supportive messages online, encouraging the young artist to focus on future opportunities. With no official reason announced, supporters are now waiting for further updates regarding possible rescheduled dates or new tour plans. For now, North’s debut tour may be on hold, but her growing music career appears far from over.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to complete nationwide body-camera rollout by late August

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed that its nationwide distribution of body-worn cameras to all field officers and agents is moving ahead of schedule, with deployment set to wrap up by the end of August. Acting Director David Venturella announced the accelerated timetable amidst intense public and congressional scrutiny following recent fatal enforcement encounters. Public outrage mounted after lethal shootings during traffic stops in Maine and Texas, as well as the fatal shooting of two US citizens during an immigration crackdown in Minnesota. In response to the incidents, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem previously stated that the camera programme would expand nationwide as funding allowed, while border czar Tom Homan directed that officers record vehicle stops using at least one body camera. Under current internal policies, ICE permits expedited footage releases following incidents involving severe injury or death in custody. However, the agency retains broad authority to withhold recordings to safeguard active investigations or personal privacy. Transparency advocates and legal scholars have criticised the framework, arguing that granting agency leadership discretionary power to block or delay footage releases risks shielding federal operations from meaningful public oversight.
