Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh has held a series of meetings with senior officials, business leaders and members of the Pakistani-American community during his visit to California.

The ambassador discussed ways to expand economic and commercial cooperation between Pakistan and the US state.

He said developing stronger economic, trade and educational links with California was among Pakistan’s key priorities.

Sheikh highlighted the potential for cooperation in sectors including modern technology and agriculture. He said both sides should focus on creating more opportunities for investment, business partnerships and the exchange of expertise.

The ambassador also engaged with representatives of the American business community and investors.

He encouraged them to examine Pakistan’s growing investment potential and explore opportunities for launching business ventures in the country.

Sheikh said stronger links between Pakistani and American businesses could help increase trade and create new avenues for economic cooperation.

He also highlighted the importance of educational connections between Pakistan and California.

According to the ambassador, greater interaction between educational institutions, professionals and technology sectors could contribute to knowledge sharing and long-term cooperation.

During his meetings with Pakistani-Americans, Sheikh praised their contribution to strengthening relations between Pakistan and the United States.

He said the community had played an important role in promoting cultural understanding, local trade and people-to-people contacts.

The ambassador said Pakistani-Americans could further contribute by building stronger business and cultural connections between the two countries.

The meetings were part of Pakistan’s efforts to deepen engagement with California’s government, business sector and Pakistani-American community.

The execution comes amid an increasingly severe crackdown following nationwide protests that began in late December and expanded across Iran in January. The demonstrations were initially fuelled by economic grievances but quickly developed into broader anti-government protests. Iranian authorities have repeatedly described some protesters as agents or operatives working for foreign enemies, while rights organisations have challenged the fairness of several cases brought against demonstrators. The latest execution also follows a broader increase in executions connected to the unrest. The UN human rights chief said earlier this month that Iran had executed at least 56 people on national-security-related charges since March 19, including 27 people linked to the anti-government protests. Human rights organisations have warned that dozens of other protesters remain at risk of execution. Amnesty International said in July that at least 60 people, including some who were children when arrested, were at risk after receiving death sentences connected to the protests. The UN’s Iran fact-finding mission has also urged Tehran to halt executions linked to the protests, expressing concern over accelerated proceedings and allegations surrounding the fairness of trials. Iran, however, maintains that its courts are dealing with serious national-security offences and that capital punishment is lawful. The executions have intensified debate over the government’s response to dissent. While officials portray the cases as necessary measures against threats to national security, rights groups argue that protesters and political dissidents are being subjected to harsh sentences after proceedings that fail to meet international fair-trial standards. With further cases reportedly moving through Iran’s Revolutionary Courts, the execution of Adineh is likely to renew scrutiny of Tehran’s treatment of those accused of involvement in the January protests.

    University Road corridor to be completed by Septem…

    Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that 80 to 85 per cent of the work on the corridor along Karachi’s University Road has been completed. He said the remaining work is expected to be finished by September 15, after which the road project will be fully completed. Sharjeel Memon made the remarks during a visit to the BRT Red Line project. He reviewed the ongoing construction work and the traffic situation along University Road. The minister said traffic is currently moving smoothly on the road and that there are no major disruptions to the flow of vehicles. He also announced that a large number of double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi next month. Electric vehicles will also be introduced as part of efforts to improve the city’s public transport system. According to the minister, the Sindh government has already approved 500 electric buses. He added that Pink Scooties would soon be made available for women as part of initiatives aimed at improving mobility and transportation options. Sharjeel Memon said the provincial government was working on several public service projects across different sectors. He maintained that the Pakistan Peoples Party comes to power through the public mandate and focuses on completing development and welfare projects after assuming office. Speaking about Thar, the minister said the region has extensive coal reserves that can be used to generate relatively inexpensive electricity. He said Thar coal could also be utilised to meet the energy requirements of power plants across Pakistan. He further highlighted what he described as the Pakistan Peoples Party’s contribution to the country, including its role in Pakistan’s development as a nuclear power. Discussing the performance of the Sindh government, Memon said work was continuing around the clock in different departments. He said significant progress had been made on a housing programme aimed at constructing 2.1 million homes, with a large number of houses already completed. The minister described the housing initiative as one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. He also referred to the Shahrah-e-Bhutto, saying heavy traffic on the newly constructed road demonstrated its importance and success. He claimed Sindh was the only province focusing on practical development rather than political propaganda. On Karachi’s transport needs, Memon said public transport services would be expanded across the city without discrimination. He said voters could support any political party, but the government would continue to provide transport facilities in every part of Karachi. The minister also highlighted developments in Sindh’s healthcare sector. He said the provincial government was providing free and modern medical facilities and had introduced several initiatives before similar measures were adopted elsewhere. Memon also pointed to the province’s air ambulance service, saying the facility had already been operational for some time.

He said the administration is also committed to creating quality employment opportunities and promoting the economic empowerment of women as part of its broader development strategy.     Pakistan achieved a historic milestone at the 2026 World Ju-Jitsu Championship by winning two gold medals and one bronze medal, marking one of the country’s finest performances in the international competition. He said the medical report made it necessary for authorities to end the former prime minister’s solitary confinement and provide him with better medical facilities. Chaudhry criticised the decision to keep Imran Khan in isolation and alleged that denying adequate medical care to a major political leader was unacceptable. He urged the authorities to follow the recommendations of medical experts and ensure that all necessary treatment and facilities were provided without delay. A medical report submitted to the Supreme Court reportedly contains recommendations from a medical board that examined Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. According to the report, the medical board recommended several measures to help manage Imran Khan’s blood pressure and anxiety. The doctors recommended that the former prime minister be allowed to walk for at least one hour every day. The board said some relaxation in the prison environment was necessary in view of his current health condition. The medical team also recommended providing Imran Khan with newspapers, magazines, books and television facilities. The measures are intended to keep him mentally engaged during his imprisonment. The medical board also made recommendations regarding his meetings with family members and his wife. It suggested that meetings with his family and wife should take place more regularly and for longer than the currently prescribed duration, subject to the applicable rules. According to the recommendations, regular physical activity, access to reading material and greater interaction with family members could help reduce Imran Khan’s anxiety and assist in keeping his blood pressure under control. Fawad Chaudhry has called on the authorities to implement the medical recommendations and ensure that Imran Khan receives appropriate treatment and a suitable environment during his imprisonment.
