NTSB chief presses Congress to approve aviation safety reforms

The head of the US National Transportation Safety Board has urged Congress to end months of legislative delays and pass a major aviation safety package aimed at reducing the risk of deadly midair collisions. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said lawmakers already have clear recommendations from investigators and should move quickly to turn them into law.

Homendy said the agency has provided Congress with a detailed plan to strengthen aviation safety and prevent another disaster like the one that claimed dozens of lives near Washington last year. She stressed that the necessary reforms have been discussed for months and that it is now time for lawmakers to take action.

Her appeal comes after the January 2025 collision between an American Airlines regional passenger jet and a US Army helicopter near Washington, DC. The crash killed 67 people and became the deadliest aviation accident in the United States since 2001.

Following the tragedy, the House of Representatives approved a broad aviation safety bill in April with overwhelming bipartisan support in a 396 to 10 vote. The legislation includes dozens of recommendations made by investigators after the crash. The Senate had earlier passed its own proposal, known as the ROTOR Act, but the measure failed to secure enough support in the House under fast track voting procedures, leaving the reforms stalled.

According to the NTSB, the collision could have been prevented if both aircraft had been equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast technology, commonly known as ADS-B. The system allows aircraft to continuously share their position with air traffic controllers and nearby aircraft, improving awareness in busy airspace and reducing the risk of collisions.

Earlier this year, the NTSB concluded that failures within the Federal Aviation Administration contributed to the fatal accident. Investigators found that the FAA had allowed helicopters to operate too close to commercial flight paths near Washington’s airport without maintaining adequate separation. The agency was also criticized for failing to properly review safety data and for not acting on earlier recommendations to redirect helicopter traffic away from the area.

The House approved legislation would require most US military aircraft to be fitted with collision prevention technology by 2031. Fighter jets, bombers and drones would be exempt from the requirement. The bill also introduces new standards for collision mitigation systems on civilian airplanes and helicopters to improve safety across the aviation sector.

Lawmakers from both chambers are continuing negotiations to resolve differences between the House and Senate versions of the legislation before a final bill can be approved.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford recently said the agency has been providing technical guidance to Congress throughout the legislative process. He noted that the FAA has the authority to expand the use of ADS-B technology without waiting for new legislation but said clear direction from Congress would provide a stronger framework for implementing long term safety improvements.

The NTSB believes the proposed reforms would significantly strengthen aviation safety and reduce the chances of another catastrophic midair collision. With negotiations continuing in Congress, transportation officials are urging lawmakers to finalize the legislation as soon as possible to better protect passengers, flight crews and military personnel.

Neymar answers critics with poker celebration on Santos return

Brazilian star Neymar marked his long-awaited return to action for Santos by scoring twice and responding to recent criticism with a playful goal celebration inspired by poker. The veteran forward helped Santos come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against bottom-placed Chapecoense in Brazil’s Serie A on Saturday. The 34-year-old made his first appearance for Santos after spending two-and-a-half months on the sidelines. His return came at a crucial stage of the season, with Santos battling to avoid relegation from Brazil’s top flight. Although the draw earned the club an important point, Santos remain in danger, sitting just one point above the relegation zone. Neymar had come under renewed criticism earlier in the week after taking part in a poker tournament while his Santos teammates were playing a Copa Sudamericana match in Venezuela. His decision sparked debate among fans and pundits, with many questioning his priorities during his injury lay-off. The Brazilian forward appeared to respond to those comments after opening the scoring. Following his first goal, Neymar celebrated by pretending to deal playing cards, an apparent reference to the poker tournament that had attracted criticism. Moments later, he added another light-hearted celebration by using the corner flag to imitate a golf swing, further acknowledging the public scrutiny surrounding his off-field activities. Despite the criticism, Neymar delivered when Santos needed him most. His two goals helped the struggling side recover from a difficult position and earn a valuable draw. While the result did not move Santos away from the relegation battle, it provided encouragement as the club fights to remain in Brazil’s top division. The match also marked Neymar’s first appearance since Brazil’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign. The country’s all-time leading goalscorer recently announced the end of his international career after Brazil were eliminated by Norway in the Round of 16, bringing an end to one of the most successful international careers in the nation’s history. Having stepped away from international football, Neymar is now expected to focus entirely on helping Santos improve their domestic fortunes. His experience and leadership will be vital as the club attempts to avoid relegation during the remainder of the season. Fans welcomed Neymar’s return, with many praising his immediate impact despite the recent controversy. His performance demonstrated that he remains capable of making the difference on the pitch, even as discussions about his lifestyle continue off it. While his poker-themed celebration is likely to generate further debate, Neymar made one thing clear through his display against Chapecoense: he intends to answer his critics with performances rather than words. With Santos still facing a difficult fight for survival, the club will hope their star forward can maintain his fitness and continue producing decisive performances in the weeks ahead.

Pakistan accumulates 6.25maf water in dams as monsoon inflows surge

Pakistan’s water reservoirs have stored more than 6.25 million acre-feet (MAF) of water during the ongoing Kharif season, bolstered by surging monsoon inflows across major national dams. An official from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) confirmed that Tarbela Dam currently holds 3.395 MAF, Mangla Dam holds 3.011 MAF, and Chashma Barrage contains 0.121 MAF. At Tarbela, inflows reached 285,700 cusecs against regulated outflows of 210,000 cusecs. Chashma Barrage recorded inflows of 263,700 cusecs and outflows of 225,000 cusecs, while Mangla Dam logged 80,500 cusecs in inflows alongside reduced outflows of 10,000 cusecs to rapidly build capacity. Due to heavy monsoon rains creating flood-like conditions at both major reservoirs, WAPDA and IRSA are managing operations cautiously to regulate inflows safely and conserve water. Downstream of Kotri Barrage, water releases were kept at a minimal 0.138 MAF between April 1 and July 21 to prevent seawater intrusion into the Indus delta, though downstream discharges are projected to increase as peak monsoon flows continue. All four provinces are currently receiving their complete indented irrigation allocations to support agricultural activities during the Kharif season. Water managers continue to monitor basin conditions closely, including at Marala Headworks on the Chenab River, where inflows rose to 102,400 cusecs with outflows kept at 80,100 cusecs following catchment rainfall. However, IRSA expressed concern over the inability to independently verify the exact origin and scale of upstream river flows, as India has suspended real-time hydrological data sharing under the Indus Waters Treaty.

Netanyahu claims Hezbollah pushed back from border…

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israeli forces have pushed Hezbollah approximately 5 to 8 miles (8 to 13 kilometers) back from the Israel-Lebanon border and destroyed about 94 percent of the militant group’s estimated 150,000 missiles and rockets . In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu highlighted what he described as significant military gains against Hezbollah, which has been a central adversary along Israel’s northern frontier for decades . The Prime Minister also pointed to a new trilateral agreement that has opened direct Israeli-Lebanese talks for the first time in decades. Under this arrangement, Israel is to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory as Lebanon moves to disarm Hezbollah . Netanyahu expressed cautious optimism but noted that whether the Lebanese army can effectively hold and secure the territory “is yet to be seen,” while adding that Israel is “willing to give it a try” . However, the situation on the ground appears tense, as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has separately briefed French President Emmanuel Macron on what Beirut describes as ongoing Israeli violations in southern Lebanon . The details of those alleged violations were not immediately specified, but they underscore the fragility of the current security arrangements. The developments come amid a broader regional push to stabilize multiple fronts, including the recent Israeli cabinet approval for an International Stabilization Force to enter Gaza . The Lebanese front has remained a critical concern, with cross-border exchanges of fire having intensified over the past years. Netanyahu’s remarks suggest that Israel views the military campaign against Hezbollah as having achieved its primary objectives of degrading the group’s offensive capabilities and creating a buffer zone near the border. The success of the political track, however, now hinges on the Lebanese state’s ability to enforce disarmament commitments a task that has historically proven challenging given Hezbollah’s deep entrenchment in Lebanese society and politics . As of now, neither Hezbollah nor the Lebanese government has publicly responded to Netanyahu’s claims regarding the group’s military losses or the border buffer zone.

AJK’s JAAC accused of pursuing foreign agenda to sabotage regional polls

Pakistan federal ministers and Azad Jammu and Kashmir authorities have publicly accused the proscribed Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee of deploying armed violence and operating under Indian financial backing to disrupt the region’s legislative assembly elections. During a joint press conference in Islamabad, State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry and Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar asserted that the group’s ongoing campaign aims to disenfranchise local voters rather than secure public rights. Chaudhry stated that thirty-seven of the committee’s thirty-eight demands had already been accepted by the government, rendering the continuing street agitation unjustified. Information Minister Tarar added that law enforcement agencies recently uncovered an India-linked digital campaign network funding social media operations and bot farms specifically to amplify content associated with the banned organization. The press conference coincided with statements from Azad Kashmir officials in Muzaffarabad following violent confrontations between law enforcement and protesters in Rawalakot. Regional police and administration spokespersons confirmed that five police officers sustained injuries from automatic gunfire during the clashes, alleging that armed elements within the movement have used civilians as shields. Despite the unrest in parts of the region, government representatives highlighted that roughly six hundred thousand citizens participated in the initial voting phase across Mirpur Division, characterising the high turnout as a definitive public rejection of efforts to derail the democratic process.

Perez Hilton’s family shares heartbreaking update after health scare

Perez Hilton’s family has shared a heartbreaking update about the celebrity blogger’s condition following a serious health emergency earlier this week. In a statement released on Saturday, August 8, the family revealed that the 48-year-old is facing a long recovery and will require surgery after suffering significant blood loss and additional injuries during an apparent self-harm incident. According to the statement, Hilton’s communication has been extremely limited as he remains focused on receiving medical care. His contact has been restricted to immediate family members, medical professionals, and others directly involved in his treatment. The family also clarified that Hilton has not spoken to the media or released any public statements since the incident. They emphasized that his priority at this time is receiving proper medical attention and beginning the recovery process. “His treatment and recovery will be a long process,” the family explained, highlighting the seriousness of his current condition. The Hilton family further expressed concern over the attention surrounding the incident and urged members of the media and public to respect their privacy while he continues his treatment. They specifically asked photographers and reporters to stop gathering outside the family home, following relatives, or attempting to take photographs of Hilton’s children. The family stressed that there was no reason for members of the media or public to remain outside the residence. They also appealed to photo agencies not to purchase, publish, or distribute any photographs of the children that may have been taken during the ongoing situation. The emotional statement comes days after Hilton was reportedly rushed to a hospital following an apparent self-harm incident during a TikTok livestream on August 4. According to reports surrounding the emergency response, authorities received a call concerning a possible suicide at around 6:51 p.m. local time. Later that night, an alleged suicide attempt at Hilton’s Miami residence was reported. Responding authorities subsequently entered the home, and emergency units were later reported to be heading toward a local hospital. Hilton was taken for medical treatment following the incident. The latest health scare comes only months after Hilton faced another major medical crisis. In March, the blogger reportedly spent 21 days in the hospital after developing sepsis following an ulcer and perforation. His condition became serious enough to require extensive medical care. He later underwent emergency surgery after doctors discovered a severe blood clot in his leg. The recent incident has therefore added another difficult chapter to Hilton’s ongoing health struggles. For now, his family says its attention remains firmly focused on his treatment and recovery. They are asking the public to give Hilton and his loved ones privacy as he undergoes surgery and begins what could be a lengthy recovery journey.
