Owaisi slams hijab ruling, calls it ‘Attack on Islam’

AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly criticised the Allahabad High Court’s recent decision rejecting a Muslim student’s plea to wear a hijab with her school uniform.

Reacting to the ruling, Owaisi described the decision as an “attack on Islam” and argued that judges cannot determine which practices are essential to a religion.

“Islam is our religion, and we will decide what is essential in it,” Owaisi said, while questioning the court’s approach to matters of religious practice.

The AIMIM leader also pointed out that the Supreme Court is already considering issues related to essential religious practices and freedom of religion. He argued that the Allahabad High Court should therefore have avoided making a ruling on the matter while the broader legal question remains before the apex court.

Owaisi further claimed that the judgment conflicts with Articles 19 and 25 of the Indian Constitution, which protect freedom of expression and religious freedom.

Defending the student’s right to wear a hijab, Owaisi said the decision concerns a personal and religious choice. He remarked that the student was wearing a hijab on her head, “not on her brain,” stressing that wearing the religious garment should not be viewed as a barrier to education or academic ability.

He also warned that the ruling could discourage Muslim girls from pursuing education, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. According to Owaisi, Muslim girls already have relatively low enrolment at the secondary-school level in the state, and restrictions on religious attire could create additional obstacles for them.

The controversy follows an Allahabad High Court ruling issued on August 21, in which a two-judge bench dismissed a petition filed by a Muslim student from a private school in Prayagraj. The student had sought permission to wear a hijab along with the prescribed school uniform.

The student had already completed her high school education and wanted to continue in Class 11 at the same institution. Her petition challenged the school’s restriction on wearing the hijab as part of the uniform.

The bench, comprising Justices J.J. Munir and Indrajeet Shukla, rejected the argument that wearing a hijab constitutes an essential religious practice in Islam. The judges noted that several High Courts have previously held that wearing a hijab is not an obligatory religious practice for Muslim women to the extent that failing to observe it would affect their faith.

The court also maintained that students cannot unilaterally alter an institution’s prescribed uniform based on their individual preferences. The ruling has since sparked debate over the balance between uniform regulations, religious freedom and students’ rights in educational institutions.

Israel quietly receives advanced INS Drakon submar…

JERUSALEM: Israel has quietly taken delivery of the advanced INS Drakon submarine, with the handover reportedly taking place without the usual public ceremony or official fanfare. According to media reports, the submarine belongs to the Dakar-class fleet and was built in Germany by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The vessel is regarded as one of the most sophisticated additions to the Israeli Navy’s underwater fleet. Defense analysts say the INS Drakon is designed for long-range covert operations, intelligence gathering, and extended deployments at sea, significantly enhancing Israel’s naval capabilities. The submarine is part of Israel’s ongoing efforts to modernize its maritime defense amid evolving regional security challenges. Some defense experts have also suggested that Israel’s Dolphin-class submarines may be capable of carrying nuclear-armed missiles, although Israeli authorities have never officially confirmed such capabilities. The arrival of the INS Drakon further strengthens Israel’s strategic naval deterrence and expands its ability to conduct long-duration missions across distant maritime regions.

Europe’s hottest town faces a new heat lockdown

FLORIDIA, Sicily: In the Sicilian town of Floridia, extreme heat is no longer simply a matter of breaking temperature records. It is increasingly shaping how people work, socialise, raise children and make a living. Five years after a nearby rural area recorded Europe’s highest officially recognised temperature of 48.8 degrees Celsius, residents say scorching summers have become a defining part of everyday life. The August 2021 temperature, measured in Monasteri about five kilometres from Floridia, transformed the town of around 20,000 people into a symbol of Europe’s rapidly warming climate. The World Meteorological Organisation certified the reading in 2024 as the highest temperature recorded in continental Europe. Many residents initially believed the extraordinary heat was an isolated event. Instead, they say, prolonged heatwaves have become increasingly common. Today, Floridia’s streets and public squares can remain almost deserted during the hottest hours. Piazza del Popolo, traditionally a gathering place filled with cafes and residents, has lost much of its daytime bustle. “It’s awful because many people end up shut indoors. In a way, we are all experiencing another kind of lockdown,” Floridia culture councillor Serena Spada told Reuters. The heat is also disrupting one of Sicily’s cherished traditions — “pigghiari u frescu”, when families sit outside their homes in the evening to enjoy cooler air and socialise. But even nights are becoming less comfortable. Heat That Refuses to Let Up The concern among climate experts is not limited to isolated temperature records. They say the more significant warning is the persistent rise in average temperatures. Reuters Climate Monitor data showed Floridia reached 33.3C on August 12, 2026 — 4.1C above the average for the 1961-1990 historical period. Luigi Pasotti, director of Sicily’s Agrometeorological Information Service, said temperatures were increasingly remaining elevated for weeks rather than producing only short-lived peaks. “We are no longer talking about extreme temperature peaks lasting one or two days, as happened in 2021,” he said. “We are talking about entire weeks, even months during which temperatures remain consistently high.” The nights are also becoming warmer, with Sicily experiencing increasing numbers of tropical and super-tropical nights, according to Pasotti. For residents, the consequences are tangible. Ugo Tomasello recalled struggling to breathe while walking during an earlier heatwave and fearing he might collapse with nobody nearby to help him. Agriculture Under Pressure Sicily’s changing climate is also threatening livelihoods. The island has faced a combination of heatwaves, drought, wildfires and intense storms. A Legambiente analysis based on EFFIS-Copernicus data found Sicily accounted for roughly 70 per cent of southern Italy’s burned area between January and July. Agriculture, a major pillar of the island’s economy, is particularly vulnerable. Beekeepers around Floridia have experienced some of the most painful consequences. In 2021, more than 3,000 beehives were lost in the area and honey production plunged by about 80 per cent. Francesco Pappalardo, a 33-year-old beekeeper who began working with his father as a child, said summer has become a period of anxiety. “The heat can cause individual colonies to collapse and sometimes entire apiaries can be lost,” he said. Agronomist Francesco Bellomi warned that declining bee populations, fewer beekeepers, loss of pollinators and pesticide use are contributing to reduced biodiversity and threatening agricultural yields. Floridia’s experience reflects a wider European trend in which climate change is making extreme weather more frequent and disruptive. For residents of this once-record-breaking Sicilian town, however, climate change is no longer an abstract scientific debate. It is felt in empty streets, sleepless nights, lost livelihoods and children forced indoors. The 48.8C record may still stand, but for Floridia’s residents, the more worrying question is how long the heat will remain.

Bangladesh moves toward talks with China to buy J-…

Bangladesh is preparing to begin formal discussions with China over a possible purchase of J-10CE fighter jets and attack helicopters according to a government adviser. Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said Tuesday that a government committee is working on a draft agreement that could pave the way for negotiations with Beijing. The potential deal would represent one of Bangladesh’s largest defence purchases in recent years and could further strengthen the country’s military relationship with China. Beijing is already Bangladesh’s biggest supplier of defence equipment. The J-10CE fighter jet has received increased international attention since fighting between India and Pakistan in May 2025. Pakistan said its J-10CE aircraft were involved in shooting down Indian fighter jets during the clashes. India has disputed those claims. Ur Rahman said Bangladesh had observed reports about the aircraft’s performance during the conflict as it considers options to modernise its air force. Bangladesh is reportedly considering purchasing as many as 24 J-10CE fighter jets although officials have not confirmed the final number. Pakistan is currently the only confirmed foreign operator of the export version of the Chinese aircraft. The adviser did not reveal how many jets Bangladesh could ultimately purchase the expected cost of the agreement or when deliveries might begin. Those details, he said, would be decided during negotiations. The possible fighter-jet purchase comes as Bangladesh seeks to upgrade its military capabilities. The country has maintained close defence ties with China for years with Beijing supplying a wide range of military equipment. Over the past two decades, China has provided Bangladesh with warships, fighter aircraft, tanks and missile systems, making it Dhaka’s largest source of military hardware. If Bangladesh proceeds with the J-10CE acquisition, the move could further deepen defence cooperation between Dhaka and Beijing while giving Bangladesh a modern multirole fighter capable of performing air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

    Who is Epstein’s potential heir?

Attention has shifted to Karyna Shuliak, the longtime girlfriend of convicted sex offender and disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein. The development comes years after Epstein died in a federal prison in 2019. His death brought an end to his criminal case but left behind a complicated estate and several legal disputes. Shuliak is now being described as a potential major beneficiary of Epstein’s remaining wealth. According to court documents, Epstein signed a new will just two days before his death. The document created a private trust known as the 1953 Trust. Recent court records reportedly show that Shuliak was included among the important beneficiaries of the trust. However, the exact amount she could receive remains uncertain. US Department of Justice records reportedly indicate that Shuliak was the last person Epstein spoke to outside prison before his death. Reports also say that Epstein made some of his final telephone calls to her while he was in custody. At the time of his death, Epstein’s estate was estimated to be worth around $600 million. A significant portion of that wealth has since been used to compensate people who accused Epstein of sexual abuse. More than $170 million was reportedly paid to over 200 victims through compensation arrangements. The estate has also faced several legal claims and settlements with government authorities. These matters have complicated the distribution of Epstein’s remaining assets. After a recent tax refund, the value of the estate’s remaining assets is estimated at between $120 million and $150 million. Despite being named as a potential beneficiary, Shuliak has not yet secured the inheritance. Payments connected to the trust remain suspended while legal proceedings continue. Richard Kahn, the executor of Epstein’s estate, has reportedly raised concerns about the wording of the trust agreement. He described the document as unclear and poorly prepared. The uncertainty has made it difficult to determine exactly how Epstein intended his remaining fortune to be divided. Legal experts say Shuliak’s potential inheritance cannot be confirmed until outstanding claims and court proceedings are resolved.

Chilling details of Nancy Guthrie’s first ra…

The investigation into the alleged kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie has taken a chilling turn as details of the first ransom note sent to her family have been revealed. The note, which authorities have described as both genuine and threatening, was addressed to Nancy’s daughter, Savannah, and contained warnings that have left investigators and the public on edge. Crime journalist Briana Whitney, speaking on the Crime Junkie podcast, revealed the terrifying message allegedly sent to Savannah. The most chilling line in the note read: “It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible.” Whitney, reading from the ransom message, further detailed the captors’ demands: “You will not be able to contact me from here on out. There will be no negotiation. Do not play games. Law enforcement will not be able to help you.” The note, which was sent shortly after Nancy was last seen at home on January 31, has dominated the investigation. While some ransom notes were reportedly deemed to be hoaxes, authorities confirmed that others were genuine, adding to the complexity of the case. Investigators have yet to produce a suspect in the alleged kidnapping, leaving the family and the public seeking answers. The ransom notes have been central to the case, with authorities reportedly keeping many details under wraps to avoid compromising the investigation. However, the release of these chilling details has shed new light on the threats faced by the Guthrie family. The note’s warning that law enforcement would not be able to help and that there would be no negotiation suggests a calculated effort by the captors to isolate Savannah and exert maximum pressure on the family. Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has sparked widespread concern, with her family making several public pleas for her safe return. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. The release of the ransom note details has reignited public interest in the case, with many hoping that the new information will lead to a breakthrough. As the investigation continues, the Guthrie family remains in the spotlight, their ordeal serving as a stark reminder of the terror faced by families of kidnapping victims. The chilling words of the ransom note have left an indelible mark on the case, underscoring the urgency of finding Nancy and bringing her captors to justice. The public awaits further developments, hoping for a resolution that will bring closure to the family and accountability for those responsible.

Iran warns tankers over Strait of Hormuz passage

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that one of three oil tankers caught fire after an explosion while attempting to navigate a route reportedly surrounded by naval mines south of the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC, the other two tankers turned back and abandoned their attempt to continue through the area. The Iranian force said the incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the strategically important waterway, which serves as a major route for global energy shipments. The IRGC maintains that Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz and has closed the passage completely in response to what it describes as increased US military activity in the region. The IRGC also issued a warning to commercial vessels, saying that no tanker would receive permission to enter or pass through the strait without Iran’s approval. The statement signals a further escalation in tensions surrounding one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and remains a crucial corridor for international energy supplies. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway could affect global oil markets and raise concerns over the security of maritime trade. The reported tanker incident and Iran’s warning come as regional tensions remain high, increasing uncertainty for shipping companies and energy markets operating in and around the Gulf.
