Pakistan, FAO strengthen partnership to boost food…

Pakistan and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in food security, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and livestock development. The renewed partnership aims to address the growing challenges posed by climate change while supporting Pakistan’s long-term agricultural and economic development.

The commitment was made during a meeting held in Islamabad between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and a delegation from the FAO led by Deputy Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific, Robert Simpson. The discussions focused on strengthening existing partnerships and accelerating the implementation of projects designed to improve agricultural productivity and food systems across the country.

During the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that Pakistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, despite contributing only a minimal share to global greenhouse gas emissions. He stressed that unpredictable weather patterns, floods, droughts, and rising temperatures continue to threaten agricultural production, food availability, and the livelihoods of millions of farmers.

The minister called for enhanced technical assistance from the FAO and urged the timely implementation of ongoing development initiatives. He highlighted the importance of adopting modern farming practices, improving water management, and strengthening institutional capacity to help Pakistan build a more resilient agricultural sector.

Rana Tanveer Hussain also outlined the government’s key priorities for the agriculture sector. These include improving food safety standards, strengthening Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) systems to boost agricultural exports, expanding livestock development programs, and increasing livestock exports to international markets. He further stressed the need to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported wheat and edible oil by increasing domestic agricultural production and promoting sustainable farming practices.

The FAO delegation reaffirmed its continued support for Pakistan’s agricultural development agenda. Robert Simpson assured the minister that the organization would continue working closely with the government to mobilize financial resources from international financial institutions and development partners. The funding is expected to support climate adaptation projects, food security initiatives, and sustainable agricultural development across the country.

The meeting reflects the shared commitment of Pakistan and the FAO to building a resilient and sustainable food system capable of addressing future challenges. By strengthening cooperation and investing in climate-smart agriculture, both sides aim to improve food security, enhance rural livelihoods, and promote sustainable economic growth for the benefit of future generations.

Yemen launches counter-operation against Houthis a…

Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces have launched a military counter-operation against the Houthis following a series of missile and drone attacks on military positions in the provinces of Marib and Hadramout, according to a military spokesman. Yemeni army spokesman Majed al-Nazili said the government forces had begun responding to the attacks and would not tolerate threats against civilians, troops or military positions. “We will give a decisive military response to the threats facing the Yemeni people and armed forces,” al-Nazili said, according to the statement cited by local media. The announcement comes after Houthi forces carried out a series of attacks on government-aligned military camps in Marib and Hadramout. Recent reports said at least 30 Yemeni government soldiers were killed and 15 others wounded in the strikes. The escalation has raised fresh concerns over the fragile security situation in Yemen, where large-scale fighting had significantly declined following the UN-mediated truce that began in April 2022. Although the truce formally expired later that year, the country avoided a full return to nationwide warfare for an extended period. The latest violence is being closely watched because Marib remains strategically important to Yemen’s government, while Hadramout is a major eastern province with significant military and economic importance. The United Nations has repeatedly warned that renewed military escalation could undermine diplomatic efforts and worsen Yemen’s already severe humanitarian crisis. The UN Security Council has stressed the need for restraint and a Yemeni-led political process as the most viable route toward a lasting settlement. The latest developments could therefore mark a dangerous turning point if the government’s promised counter-operation leads to sustained fighting. For millions of Yemenis already affected by years of conflict, renewed hostilities could bring further displacement, economic hardship and pressure on essential services. With both sides now trading threats and military strikes, attention is turning to whether the latest confrontation remains limited—or develops into a broader escalation across Yemen.

PSX opens higher as KSE-100 index gains over 500 points

KARACHI: Buying activity dominated trading at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index rising more than 500 points during the early session. At around 9:45am, the benchmark index was trading at 180,864.26 points, recording an increase of 553.05 points, or 0.31%, from the previous close. The positive trend reflected renewed investor interest in several major sectors. Strong activity was witnessed in cement, commercial banking, fertiliser, oil marketing companies (OMCs) and power generation stocks. Several index-heavy companies also contributed to the upward movement. HUBCO, Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC), MCB Bank, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and United Bank Limited (UBL) were among the stocks trading in positive territory during the early hours. The latest gains come after the stock market staged a recovery in the previous session. On Wednesday, the PSX rebounded as investors returned to buying after two consecutive sessions of profit-taking. Market sentiment also improved toward the end of Wednesday’s trading session following reports regarding an extension of the US-Iran ceasefire, which helped ease some concerns among investors about geopolitical developments and their potential impact on regional markets. The KSE-100 Index ultimately closed Wednesday’s session at 180,311.22 points. Global markets provide positive cues The positive momentum at the domestic bourse was also supported by a broadly upbeat trend in Asian equity markets. Asian stocks advanced on Thursday after fresh US inflation data broadly matched market expectations. The figures reduced some expectations of an immediate tightening move by the US Federal Reserve and provided support to investor sentiment. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.97%, while South Korea’s benchmark market climbed sharply, gaining 4.4%. Japan’s Nikkei index also advanced 1.86%. US stock futures remained relatively stable, with S&P 500 E-mini futures up 0.02% during the Asian trading session. US inflation remains in focus According to data released on Wednesday, US consumer prices increased by 0.1% in July, broadly matching economists’ expectations. The modest increase in consumer prices has lowered expectations of an immediate interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Market participants are closely monitoring inflation figures as they assess the central bank’s next policy move. According to CME Group’s FedWatch tool, financial markets were pricing in around a 40% probability of a rate hike next month, down from approximately 54% a week earlier. Oil prices remain near $80 Meanwhile, international oil prices remained close to the $80-per-barrel level, as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remained unresolved. Developments in oil prices remain important for Pakistan’s economy and financial markets because changes in global crude prices can influence the country’s import bill, inflation outlook, exchange-rate pressures and corporate earnings. Investors at the PSX are expected to closely monitor both domestic economic developments and international market cues as trading progresses on Thursday.

Pakistan discovers high-grade lithium in Khairpur

Pakistan has taken a significant step toward joining the global lithium supply chain after the discovery of high-grade lithium in Sindh’s Khairpur district, a development that could pave the way for the country’s first domestic lithium industry and strengthen its ambitions in clean energy and advanced manufacturing. The breakthrough comes as the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) signed a strategic agreement with the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) to develop technology capable of extracting lithium from geothermal brine on a commercial scale. The agreement follows the successful identification of high-quality lithium in water produced from a well in Khairpur, raising hopes that Pakistan could eventually reduce its dependence on imported battery materials while creating a new high-value industrial sector. Officials familiar with the project said the collaboration will focus on designing an efficient and commercially viable extraction process. If successful, the initiative could lay the foundation for a local lithium value chain, supporting industries involved in electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy storage systems, and other high-tech applications. The discovery is also expected to attract interest from investors looking to capitalize on the rapidly growing global demand for lithium, a critical mineral used in rechargeable batteries that power electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, and grid-scale energy storage systems. In another major development, authorities have expanded lithium exploration across Sindh. Plans are underway to investigate eight to ten additional wells in search of further lithium-rich geothermal brine deposits, increasing the likelihood of identifying commercially viable reserves. Energy experts believe Pakistan’s emerging lithium potential could diversify the country’s mineral resources, generate export opportunities, and create skilled employment if exploration results continue to be positive and commercial production becomes feasible. While further scientific studies and economic assessments are still required before large-scale production begins, the Khairpur discovery marks a milestone in Pakistan’s pursuit of critical minerals. Industry observers say sustained investment in research, technology, and infrastructure will be essential to transform the discovery into a competitive domestic lithium industry capable of supporting the country’s long-term energy transition and industrial growth.

Kim Kardashian has turned one of her biggest career setbacks into a bold marketing moment with the launch of her new energy drink brand, UPDATE. The reality star and entrepreneur used humour to address years of public scrutiny over her legal journey, delivering a witty response to criticism about her bar exam results. The campaign was unveiled through a promotional video in which Kardashian appears at a mock press conference, fielding questions about her busy lifestyle, business empire and legal studies. The commercial was designed to introduce UPDATE, an energy drink that she co-founded, while showcasing her ability to laugh at herself. During the video, Kardashian jokes about the questions she constantly receives from the public. She says, “People are always asking about all of the work I’ve gotten done… They always ask, ‘Kim, how do you do so much? Kim, how do you keep going? Kim, are they really real?’” She then credits her energy to UPDATE before the ad takes another humorous turn. The commercial’s biggest moment comes when celebrity attorney Gloria Allred asks Kardashian, “Did she even ever pass the bar?” Without hesitation, Kardashian responds, “No, I didn’t pass the bar. I raised it.” The line has quickly gone viral, with fans praising her confidence and sense of humour in addressing a topic that has often attracted criticism. Riteish Deshmukh slams Yogesh Rawat, ends Lock Upp journey

A dramatic turn of events unfolded on Lock Upp after contestant Yogesh Rawat returned to the reality show by defeating Dheeraj Dhoopar in a challenge. However, his comeback was short-lived as co-host Riteish Deshmukh confronted him over remarks about the show’s popularity and ultimately asked him to leave the competition. After re-entering the jail, Yogesh was seen interacting with fellow contestants Akanksha Choudhary, Ram Kapoor, Akanksha Chamola, and Pamala. During the conversation, he claimed that the show’s TRP had dropped after his eviction and suggested that the makers had no choice but to bring him back because of his popularity. His comments did not go unnoticed. Riteish Deshmukh, who had been listening from outside, addressed the contestants and questioned Yogesh over his statements. The actor appeared visibly upset and challenged Yogesh’s claim that the show depended on his presence. Riteish reminded him of the exact remarks he had made, saying that Yogesh had implied the show suffered after his exit and that his fans had forced the makers to bring him back. He strongly objected to the attitude behind those comments and asked Yogesh whether he genuinely believed the show existed because of him. The host further clarified that Yogesh’s elimination had not been a personal decision. He pointed out that the contestant had lost a task and was evicted based on the format of the game, not because of any individual choice made by the hosts or the platform. When Yogesh tried to explain that he had merely expressed his personal feelings, Riteish interrupted and stressed that every statement made on the show reflected not only on the contestants but also on the hosts, the streaming platform, and the program itself. He said that claiming the show’s ratings had fallen and would rise again because of one contestant showed an inappropriate level of arrogance. Riteish then delivered a firm response, telling Yogesh that the show did not need him and announcing that he was being terminated from the house. He added that contestants must take responsibility for every word they speak and understand the impact of their public statements. The confrontation marked the climax of an already tense episode. Earlier, Yogesh had also clashed with Riteish during a separate exchange. As the contestant questioned the way events had unfolded, saying, “Sir, if this was what you wanted to do, then…,” Riteish immediately cut him off. The host firmly replied, “Don’t tell me. Don’t put this act with me,” making it clear that he was not willing to entertain further arguments. The heated exchange quickly became one of the episode’s biggest talking points among viewers, with fans reacting strongly to the unexpected termination. Yogesh’s dramatic return, bold claims about the show’s ratings, and his confrontation with Riteish Deshmukh ensured that the episode remained packed with controversy and intense emotions, making it one of the most talked-about moments of the current season of Lock Upp.

Netflix addresses Gandhari plagiarism allegations before release

Netflix has finally addressed the plagiarism controversy surrounding its upcoming film Gandhari, following allegations by writer Kalyan Bandi that the project bears similarities to an original story he claims to have developed several years ago. The controversy gained attention after Bandi alleged that he had written a story titled Gandhari in 2019. According to the writer, his concept revolved around a mother who transforms into a powerful, almost divine figure while trying to rescue her child from a human trafficking network. He claimed that he later pitched the idea to Monika Shergill, who was associated with Voot at the time and is now Netflix India’s Vice President of Content. Bandi said he submitted an eight-page document containing his story and synopsis but was informed that the project did not fit the platform’s content slate. However, after Taapsee Pannu’s Gandhari was announced in 2025, he raised concerns over what he believed were similarities between his concept and the upcoming film. The writer subsequently sent a legal notice seeking Rs 40 lakh in compensation. However, Bandi has maintained that financial compensation was never his primary objective. Instead, he has repeatedly said that he wants his contribution to be acknowledged if his original idea was used. Netflix has now responded to the allegations through Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Original Films at Netflix India. Speaking at the film’s trailer launch in Mumbai, she said the streaming platform takes questions surrounding artistic attribution seriously. She explained that Netflix receives numerous pitches and maintained that the story presented by Bandi is different from the film created by writer Kanika Dhillon and actress Taapsee Pannu. She also urged audiences to watch the movie before drawing conclusions about the allegations. She further emphasized Netflix’s commitment to supporting original storytelling and giving recognition to writers regardless of their previous experience in the industry. According to her, the platform values originality whether a storyteller has already worked on several films or is making their first project. Meanwhile, Dhillon’s production company, Kathha Pictures, has strongly rejected the plagiarism allegations. The production house stated that the claims are false and unequivocally denied them, maintaining that Gandhari is an original project written and produced by Dhillon and developed under Kathha Pictures. The controversy comes shortly before the film’s release, placing additional attention on the project as audiences await its arrival on the streaming platform. Directed by Devashish Makhija, Gandhari features Taapsee Pannu in the lead role and also stars Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Jatin Sarna. The film is expected to explore themes of motherhood, revenge and the lengths a parent may go to protect a child. Despite the ongoing dispute, Netflix and the filmmakers have maintained that the film is an original work. With the allegations now publicly addressed by the streaming platform, viewers will have the opportunity to watch Gandhari themselves and assess the story when it premieres on Netflix on September 3.
