Pakistan to face Sri Lanka in CAVA opener

Hosts Pakistan will launch their campaign against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Liaquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex, following India’s last-minute withdrawal from the tournament.
​The regional showpiece brings together teams from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. The tournament schedule features three matches on the opening day: host nation Pakistan takes on Sri Lanka in the curtain-raiser, followed by Kazakhstan facing Nepal, and Uzbekistan taking on Bangladesh.
​Addressing the media following the championship’s official trophy unveiling ceremony, Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) Chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob expressed disappointment over India’s decision to pull out of the competition at the eleventh hour. He explained that the PVF, in coordination with the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC), had completed all required documentation, secured necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs), and guaranteed comprehensive security measures specifically requested by the Indian delegation.
​Highlighting the tournament’s significance despite the withdrawal, Yaqoob emphasized that the event remains one of the largest international volleyball spectacles hosted in the country, demonstrating Pakistan’s growing capacity to stage high-profile sports competitions safely and efficiently:
​”We are surprised by India’s withdrawal after all necessary arrangements had been completed. At their request, the federation secured all required NOCs and comprehensive security guarantees to ensure the Indian team’s safe participation. Despite their absence, this championship remains a major international event that showcases Pakistan’s readiness to host world-class sports.”

​Pakistan enters the championship with strong momentum following encouraging performances in recent international competitions. Team officials and coaches believe the players are well-prepared to make full use of home-court advantage and familiar conditions as they pursue the regional title.
​The PVF extended a warm welcome to all visiting athletes, delegates, and officials, reassuring them that thorough arrangements have been implemented to guarantee a smooth and memorable tournament. Running through July 29, the championship aims to foster regional sportsmanship, elevate competitive standards, and provide local fans with top-tier international volleyball action.

According to police officials, the incident occurred when unknown suspects targeted her vehicle and pelted it with stones. The attack caused damage to the vehicle, but the former lawmaker was not injured. Police said Sadia Sohail Rana safely escaped the incident and immediately informed the authorities. Officers reached the scene soon after receiving the report and began collecting evidence. The former MPA has submitted an application requesting the registration of a criminal case against the unidentified attackers. Police said legal proceedings are being initiated in light of her complaint. Investigators have launched an inquiry to determine the motive behind the attack. Officials are examining all available evidence and questioning witnesses who may have seen the incident. Police are also reviewing CCTV footage from cameras installed in the surrounding area to identify the suspects and trace their movements before and after the attack. Authorities said efforts are underway to arrest those responsible. They added that action will be taken in accordance with the law once the attackers are identified.

She also shared a lighthearted moment by showing the meal she enjoyed after surgery—curly fries with ketchup—which brought a smile to many of her followers.  Polizzi first revealed her stage 1 cervical cancer diagnosis in February after receiving results from a cone biopsy. Doctors diagnosed her with adenocarcinoma, a form of cervical cancer, but assured her that it had been caught at an early stage. A subsequent PET scan showed no signs that the cancer had spread, leading doctors to recommend a hysterectomy to prevent future complications.  Before undergoing surgery, Polizzi admitted she was nervous about the procedure, calling it one of the scariest medical experiences she had ever faced. She explained that the operation would remove her uterus and cervix through an abdominal incision, making recovery more demanding than any surgery she had previously experienced.  Throughout her health journey, the mother of three has remained committed to raising awareness about cervical cancer and the importance of routine screenings. Polizzi revealed that she had experienced abnormal Pap smear results for several years before receiving her diagnosis, encouraging women not to delay regular checkups, even if the appointments feel uncomfortable or intimidating. She credits early detection with giving her the best possible chance for a full recovery.  Support has poured in from fans, family members and fellow Jersey Shore castmates, many of whom have praised Polizzi for openly sharing her experience. She has said that documenting her journey is her way of helping others feel less alone and encouraging more people to prioritize preventive healthcare.  Despite the difficult recovery, Polizzi remains optimistic about the future. She has assured followers that she is taking things one day at a time and focusing on healing. Her candid updates have transformed a deeply personal battle into an important conversation about early detection, women’s health and the power of sharing personal experiences to help others.

    WEST BANK: Two mosques were set ablaze in the occupied West Bank overnight, Palestinian officials said on Sunday, in the latest escalation of violence that has sharply raised tensions across the territory. The attacks targeted a mosque under construction in Qusra, south of Nablus, and another mosque in the village of Kour, near Tulkarm. The incidents came only days after a deadly confrontation in the nearby village of Tal that left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead. In Qusra, Mayor Abdel Azim Wadi said settlers set fire to the mosque’s entrance and damaged parts of its stonework. Hebrew graffiti, including the word “revenge,” was reportedly sprayed across the walls. The Israeli military said troops were sent to the area after receiving reports of the fire. According to the army, the suspected attackers had already fled when soldiers arrived. Israeli police were expected to collect evidence and investigate the incident. The second attack took place in Kour, where Palestinian officials said a mosque was set alight and racist slogans were written on its walls. The latest incidents also follow a deadly confrontation in Tal on Friday, where four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed.
