Stray dog attack on child at Punjab university cam…

Lahore: A deeply unfortunate, alarming, and unacceptable incident occurred today at Punjab University when the young daughter of a university professor was attacked by stray dogs roaming freely on the university campus. The brutal attack left the child with approximately fifteen deep bite wounds on different parts of her body, requiring immediate medical attention. The tragic incident has caused immense shock, grief, and concern among the victim’s family as well as the entire university community. The Academic Staff Association (ASA) and the Joint Action Committee stated that they have repeatedly raised concerns over the growing stray dog population on the campus through both written communications and verbal representations over the past several months. According to the associations, they had consistently warned the university administration that the increasing number of stray dogs posed a serious threat to the lives and safety of students, faculty members, university employees, and their families. Despite numerous complaints and repeated demands for action, the administration allegedly failed to address the issue with the seriousness it deserved, displaying what the associations described as criminal negligence, indifference, and a lack of responsibility. They maintained that today’s tragic incident is a direct consequence of this continued inaction. The Academic Staff Association and the Joint Action Committee expressed profound disappointment over what they described as the misplaced priorities of the current university administration. Instead of focusing on resolving the institution’s fundamental issues, ensuring campus security, and protecting the welfare of the university community, the administration has allegedly remained preoccupied with retaliatory actions, harassment of faculty and employees, and unnecessary administrative conflicts. The associations argued that when an administration neglects its basic legal and administrative responsibilities, such unfortunate incidents become inevitable, and responsibility for the consequences rests with the concerned authorities. Strongly condemning the incident, the Academic Staff Association (ASA) and the Joint Action Committee have put forward the following demands: An immediate, transparent, and impartial inquiry should be conducted to determine responsibility for the incident and hold those accountable. The injured child and her family should be provided with every possible medical, administrative, and financial assistance. A comprehensive, effective, and permanent operation should be launched on an emergency basis to make the entire Punjab University campus safe from stray dogs. A clear, practical, and sustainable campus safety policy should be developed and implemented to ensure the protection of students, faculty members, employees, and their families. The Academic Staff Association and the Joint Action Committee further warned that if the university administration fails to take immediate and effective measures to permanently resolve the stray dog issue, and if any similar incident occurs in the future, they will reserve the right to pursue all available legal remedies against those responsible. These measures may include the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and other legal proceedings against the relevant authorities for negligence. The associations urged the university administration to set aside personal preferences, retaliatory attitudes, and unnecessary disputes, and instead devote its full attention to addressing the university’s core challenges. They stressed that ensuring campus security and safeguarding the lives and property of students, faculty members, employees, and their families must remain the administration’s highest priority. The statement concluded by emphasizing that the protection of human life is the foremost responsibility of any institution, and any further negligence in fulfilling this duty would be entirely unacceptable.

European wildfire crisis claims three firefighters in Greece amidst scorching heatwaves

Three Greek firefighters have lost their lives whilst tackling aggressive wildfires on the island of Crete and the southern mainland, as an unprecedented surge of summer heatwaves continues to fuel devastating blazes across southern Europe. The relentless arc of fires, stretching from the Atlantic coast to the eastern Mediterranean, has forced over three hundred and thirty thousand people to evacuate their homes and hotels. Firefighting services across the continent remain pushed to their absolute limits as high temperatures, prolonged drought, and powerful wind gusts exacerbate the risk of fresh outbreaks and reignite previously stabilised zones. In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the national government had taken over disaster management after a massive wildfire near Madrid reached an unprecedented operational emergency level before ground crews managed to stabilise its perimeter. Meanwhile, French emergency services in the Gironde region continue to battle historical forest fires that have scorched over forty-four thousand hectares of land and injured more than a hundred firefighters. As the European Union coordinates extensive international aid, deploying aircraft, specialised vehicles, and emergency personnel from member states including Poland, Romania, and Portugal, climate experts and EU officials warn that rising global temperatures are making European fire seasons longer, hotter, and increasingly difficult to contain.

Gold prices rise as weaker dollar, softer US data boost rate-cut hopes

Gold prices moved higher on Monday as a weaker US dollar and subdued economic data strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates unchanged at its upcoming policy meeting. Spot gold gained 0.4% to $4,391.07 per ounce by 0248 GMT, extending its recent momentum after the precious metal reached a more than two-month high during the previous week. US gold futures for December delivery also advanced 0.3% to $4,448.10 per ounce. The dollar’s decline provided additional support to bullion. The US dollar index fell 0.1%, making gold and other dollar-denominated commodities relatively cheaper for buyers using other currencies. According to Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, gold began the week with strong momentum as weaker inflation data put pressure on the dollar and created room for bullion to approach the $4,400 threshold. Waterer said a sustained rise beyond the $4,500-per-ounce level would likely require further weakness in the dollar or a clearer decline in energy prices. US economic data shape rate expectations Recent US economic indicators have played a major role in reshaping expectations for Federal Reserve policy. An unexpected contraction in US nonfarm payrolls in July, combined with relatively moderate consumer-price inflation, has reduced market expectations for an interest-rate increase at the Fed’s next meeting. Data from the CME FedWatch Tool showed that traders were assigning a roughly 30% probability to a September rate hike, down from about 47% a month earlier. Expectations surrounding interest rates are closely watched by gold investors because bullion does not generate interest or dividends. When borrowing costs and yields are lower, the opportunity cost of holding gold declines, potentially increasing demand for the precious metal. Market participants are therefore looking ahead to the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s July meeting, scheduled for release on Wednesday. Investors will examine the minutes for indications about policymakers’ views on inflation, employment and the future direction of monetary policy. Any indication that the central bank is becoming less inclined to raise rates could provide additional support to gold, while a more hawkish tone could strengthen the dollar and place pressure on bullion. Geopolitical tensions remain in focus Geopolitical developments also continued to influence financial markets. US President Donald Trump’s representatives met Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators in Cairo on Sunday as diplomatic efforts continued to advance a proposed Gaza peace plan, according to a diplomatic source. The talks were taking place against the backdrop of continued Israeli military operations in Gaza. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have kept investors alert to the possibility of further disruptions to energy markets and global trade. Gold traditionally attracts safe-haven demand during periods of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Any escalation in regional tensions could therefore influence investor flows into precious metals. Other precious metals gain Other major precious metals also recorded gains during Monday’s session. Spot silver climbed 1.4% to $65.53 per ounce, extending its positive momentum. Silver tends to benefit from both investment demand and expectations surrounding industrial activity. Platinum advanced 0.3% to $1,752.36 per ounce, while palladium rose 1.6% to $1,333.35.
