Pakistan’s FIA defends AI profiling and phone checks at airports despite constitutional privacy concerns

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has defended its use of artificial intelligence tools and mobile phone checks at airports to combat organised human smuggling, following public backlash over immigration checks.

Additional Director-General for Immigration Nouman Siddiqui stated that AI-assisted profiling targets high-risk travel patterns, such as first-time visitors travelling to countries like Senegal, Malawi, or Cyprus with no clear family or employment ties, and that phone inspections occur only in select cases linked to smuggling networks. The FIA cited thousands of recent instances where citizens failed to return from visit visas, emphasizing that proactive measures are necessary to protect genuine travellers and prevent international reputational damage.

However, legal experts warn that the agency is exceeding its authority. Immigration lawyer Umar Gilani noted that while officers can inspect travel documents, compelling passengers to unlock smartphones constitutes search and seizure, which legally requires a formal criminal investigation.

Gilani argued that forcing access to personal devices violates the right to privacy under Article 14 of Pakistan’s constitution, calling for an independent immigration tribunal to oversee official decisions and safeguard fundamental rights.

Pakistan’s water is red line, PM Shehbaz warns I…

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warned that Pakistan will respond directly if India fails to change course, declaring that every drop of the country’s water is a “red line.” Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Victory Monument in Islamabad, the prime minister said Pakistan wanted peace rather than war, but its desire for peace should never be mistaken for weakness. He said the country was committed to pursuing peace with dignity while remaining prepared to protect its sovereignty and national interests. Shehbaz Sharif described the Victory Monument as a symbol of the courage, determination and professional capabilities of Pakistan’s armed forces. He said the monument also paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives defending the country and honoured the armed forces personnel who demonstrated exceptional bravery. The prime minister congratulated the nation on what he described as a historic victory in the May 2025 conflict and praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his leadership. He said Pakistan’s response had strengthened the country’s standing and sent a clear message that any future challenge to its sovereignty or security would be met with a stronger response. Referring to India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, Shehbaz Sharif accused New Delhi of undermining regional peace. He warned that Pakistan’s water resources were a matter of national security and reiterated that the country would take direct action if India continued on its current course. The prime minister said the monument represented a milestone in Pakistan’s broader journey towards becoming a prosperous, stable and welfare-oriented state. He stressed the need to combine national defence with economic development, technological advancement and investment in human resources. Highlighting the growing importance of information technology and artificial intelligence, Shehbaz said Pakistan must prepare its younger generation for a rapidly changing global environment. He pledged that the government would provide maximum possible support for innovation, technology and skills development. On foreign policy, the prime minister said Pakistan wanted a region free from conflicts and supported resolving disputes through justice and the principles of the United Nations. He highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran and praised Field Marshal Asim Munir’s efforts towards promoting peace in the Middle East. Shehbaz also referred to the emerging trilateral defence cooperation involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, describing it as a positive development for regional stability and a message of peace for the wider Muslim world. 15 martyred in terror attack on joint security Che…

At least 15 people, including 14 security personnel, were martyred after terrorists launched a major attack on a joint security checkpost in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the early hours of Friday. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the attackers attempted to storm the checkpost in a coordinated assault. Security personnel immediately responded with heavy fire and successfully prevented the militants from capturing the position. During the intense gun battle, security forces killed 12 terrorists who were attempting to escape after the failed assault. Officials said the troops displayed exceptional bravery and professionalism while defending the post. The attackers later rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the outer wall of the checkpost. The massive explosion caused severe structural damage and resulted in the martyrdom of 12 army personnel, two police officers and one Forest Department official who were performing their duties at the time of the attack. The blast also damaged parts of the security installation, while emergency teams rushed to the area to assist the injured and secure the site. Following the attack, security forces launched a large-scale search and clearance operation in the surrounding areas to track down any remaining militants and ensure the area was fully secured. The operation is continuing. Military officials said Pakistan’s security forces remain fully committed to eliminating terrorism and will continue intelligence-based operations across the country under the Azm-i-Istehkam national counterterrorism strategy. The military paid tribute to the martyred personnel, describing their sacrifice as a symbol of courage, dedication and unwavering commitment to the defence of the country. Officials said such attacks would not weaken the nation’s resolve to defeat terrorism. The latest incident comes amid continued efforts by security forces to dismantle militant networks operating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan through intelligence-led operations. Authorities have intensified counterterrorism efforts in recent months following a rise in attacks targeting security personnel and public installations. Senior officials condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible would be hunted down and brought to justice. They reaffirmed that operations against terrorist groups would continue until peace and stability are fully restored across Pakistan. Security experts believe militant groups are attempting to target security installations to undermine ongoing counterterrorism operations. However, officials maintain that such attacks will only strengthen the determination of Pakistan’s security forces to continue their mission against terrorism.

Nicki Minaj blasts Dr. Fauci over COVID-19 hearing

Rapper Nicki Minaj has once again criticised former White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, following his appearance before a U.S. Senate committee, where he invoked his Fifth Amendment rights and declined to answer questions related to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Barbie World hitmaker took to X (formerly Twitter) on July 30 to share a lengthy statement expressing her frustration over the Senate hearing and the lasting impact she believes the pandemic response had on millions of people. In one of her strongest remarks, Minaj wrote, “Feeding tubes will be his portion. He will lose the ability to speak & then & only then will he feel the collective pain & long term ramifications he caused to new borns, young children who are still trying to become acclimated into society & schools, traumatized pregnant women who couldn’t even have family in the delivery rooms & visits.” She continued by listing other groups she believes were deeply affected during the pandemic. “The elderly who died alone & afraid, young ppl still struggling w/mental health, suicide, people turned away from hospitals at their most vulnerable moments, the trust that is now gone from innocent people toward their governments forever, billions of stolen money from hard working tax payers via con artists…” she wrote. Concluding her message, the rapper reflected on the emotional toll of the pandemic. “I’ve been struggling to find the humor in any of this. God bless everyone who made it to the other side. You’re stronger than you thought. God is in control,” Minaj added. Her comments came a day after Dr. Fauci appeared before a Senate hearing examining decisions made during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the proceedings, Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment rights, declining to answer questions regarding his role in the government’s pandemic response. The latest exchange revives a public disagreement between Minaj and Fauci that began in September 2021 during the global vaccination campaign. At the time, Minaj claimed on social media that her cousin’s friend in Trinidad became impotent and suffered swollen testicles after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. The post quickly gained international attention and sparked widespread debate online. Health experts, however, said there was no scientific evidence linking COVID-19 vaccines to those reported side effects. Responding to the claims in 2021, Dr. Fauci said there was no evidence supporting the allegation and urged the public to rely on verified scientific research instead of unconfirmed reports circulating on social media. The disagreement quickly became one of the most talked-about celebrity-public health controversies of the pandemic, raising broader discussions about misinformation, vaccine confidence, and the influence of high-profile public figures on health-related issues. With her latest post, Minaj has once again reignited debate surrounding the pandemic years and the role of public officials in shaping COVID-19 policies, while her criticism of Fauci continues to draw strong reactions across social media.

Suspended ASI gets four-day police remand

A Lahore court on Wednesday handed a four-day physical remand of a suspended assistant sub-inspector (ASI) to police for further investigation into the alleged rape of a mentally challenged young woman inside Ghaziabad Police Station. The suspect, identified as suspended ASI Imran, was presented before Judicial Magistrate Iram Yousaf by the investigating team. Police requested a 14-day physical remand, stating that further custody was necessary to collect evidence and complete the investigation into the alleged sexual assault. After hearing the arguments, the court approved a four-day physical remand instead of the two-week period sought by investigators. The suspect will remain in police custody while investigators continue gathering evidence and recording statements. The case has sparked widespread concern after authorities alleged that the incident occurred within the premises of a police station. Following the allegations, Lahore police suspended the entire staff of Ghaziabad Police Station, citing administrative failures, negligence and poor supervision. According to the first information report (FIR), the case was registered on August 3 under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deals with rape, along with Section 155C of the Police Order 2002 concerning misconduct by police officials. The complaint was filed by the victim’s father. Police officials said senior officers immediately took notice of the incident after the FIR was registered. The accused officer was arrested, while departmental action was initiated against police personnel responsible for supervising the station. In a separate disciplinary move, authorities suspended 78 police officials posted at the station, holding them accountable for negligence and failure to ensure proper oversight. According to the complainant, his mentally challenged daughter, believed to be around 19 or 20 years old, left home on the afternoon of August 3 and did not return for several hours. During the search, a local resident allegedly informed the family that a policeman in plain clothes had taken the young woman away. The victim’s father said he rushed to the police station, where he was told that his daughter had already gone home. When the family returned, they found her distressed and crying. He alleged that his daughter told them she had been taken to the police station by a police officer and sexually assaulted. Following her statement, the family approached authorities and sought legal action against the accused officer.
