Passengers recount terrifying turbulence on Air India flight

At least 17 passengers and crew members were injured after an Air India flight encountered severe turbulence while travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi, prompting frightened passengers to fear the aircraft might crash.

According to Indian media, the flight was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members when it was hit by sudden and intense turbulence mid-air. The violent shaking reportedly caused the aircraft to drop abruptly, leaving several passengers and crew members injured. The aircraft also sustained minor damage during the incident.

The flight landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, where emergency medical teams were waiting. Injured passengers were taken from the aircraft on stretchers and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

An Italian passenger described the ordeal as one of the most terrifying experiences of her life. She said the turbulence was so powerful that her sister was thrown out of her seat, while her mother suffered a head injury. She added that several passengers were hurt, including one man whose face was covered in blood.

“We thought we were going to die,” the passenger said, recalling the frightening moments during the flight.

Air India, however, said none of the passengers or crew members suffered life-threatening injuries. The airline stated that those injured were taken to hospital as a precaution for medical evaluation.

According to the airline, five people were discharged shortly after receiving treatment, while the remaining injured passengers continue to receive medical care.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed by severe in-flight turbulence, although aviation experts note that such events are relatively rare and commercial aircraft are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.

    The process of announcing unofficial and unofficially unverified results has begun following polling in 13 constituencies of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly. Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, said Trump’s recent comments about Kim indicated a possible willingness to re-engage with North Korea. Easley also cautioned that Pyongyang has been strengthening its military capabilities while benefiting from its relationship with Russia during the war in Ukraine. He warned that reducing US-South Korean military exercises could create challenges for the alliance. It could also affect coordination between the two militaries and slow South Korea’s efforts to assume greater responsibility for its own defence. The professor further argued that a reduction in military preparedness could weaken deterrence against potential conflicts in the wider Asian region.     LAHORE: The cotton crop in Punjab is currently showing a generally satisfactory condition, while rice cultivation in the province has exceeded the government’s target by a significant margin, with growers sowing the crop over more than six million acres against the planned five million acres. The latest assessment was shared at a high-level meeting held in Multan on Saturday to review the progress of major standing crops, agricultural extension services and measures aimed at strengthening farming activity across Punjab. The meeting was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo and brought together senior officials from the Agriculture and Irrigation departments, representatives of the farming community and experts from the agricultural sector. Among those attending were Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Asif Ali, Special Secretary Agriculture South Punjab Sarfraz Hussain Magsi, Agriculture Department Directors General Abdul Hameed, Naveed Asmat Kahloon, Dr Aamir Rasool and Dr Sajid-ur-Rehman, as well as Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar, Syed Hassan Raza and Dr Muhammad Iqbal Bandesha. Additional Secretary Task Force Shabbir Ahmed Khan, Director General Crop Reporting Dr Abdul Qayyum and Agriculture Department Consultant Dr Muhammad Anjum Ali participated in the meeting through a video link. Officials briefed the meeting on the condition of major crops and the progress of field-level initiatives designed to assist farmers. Cotton remained a major focus of the discussion because of its importance to Pakistan’s textile-based economy and its contribution to agricultural incomes. The participants were informed that the cotton crop across Punjab was in a satisfactory condition. However, officials stressed the need for continued field monitoring and timely technical support to protect the crop from potential threats during its critical growth stages. Cotton is considered one of Pakistan’s most important cash crops and serves as a major source of raw material for the country’s textile industry. Its performance has a direct bearing on farmers, ginners, textile manufacturers and export-oriented businesses. In recent years, cotton production has faced challenges from changing weather patterns, pest attacks, input costs and competition from alternative crops. Sahoo emphasised that the government was giving priority to agricultural development and the economic well-being of farmers. He directed agriculture officials and field formations to maintain regular contact with growers and ensure that technical advice reached farmers in a timely manner. He said the strategy prepared for the revival and strengthening of cotton cultivation should be implemented in letter and spirit. Officials were also asked to remain active in the field and assist growers in dealing with crop-related issues. Highlighting cotton’s wider economic significance, the additional chief secretary said the country’s economy and textile sector could not be viewed separately from the performance of the cotton crop. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to improve productivity and strengthen the position of cotton growers. The meeting also reviewed the progress of rice cultivation. According to the officials, rice had already been planted over more than six million acres in Punjab, exceeding the season’s target of five million acres. Sahoo directed agricultural authorities to intensify technical guidance for rice growers, particularly to help them improve productivity, maintain crop quality and adopt better farming practices. He called for greater involvement of regional agricultural forums and professional experts in addressing issues faced by farmers at the local level. Such platforms, he said, should use their technical expertise to help improve agricultural performance and provide practical solutions to growers. The additional chief secretary also appreciated the efforts of Agriculture Department field teams for their role in supporting farmers and monitoring crop conditions across the province. Later, Sahoo visited the Model Agriculture Mall in Multan to inspect arrangements for the provision of agricultural inputs to farmers. During the visit, he reviewed the availability of fertilisers and other essential inputs and sought information from officials regarding stocks and farmer demand. He directed the relevant authorities to ensure uninterrupted availability of fertiliser at the facility so that farmers did not face shortages during the ongoing crop season. Officials said crop conditions would continue to be monitored closely in the coming weeks. With rice cultivation entering the final stages of the transplantation period and cotton moving into an important phase of its growth cycle, timely field intervention and availability of agricultural inputs would remain crucial to determining overall crop performance. The government is expected to maintain its focus on farmer guidance, crop monitoring and input availability as the province moves further into the agricultural season.

    The murder of 25-year-old Karachi entrepreneur Mir Raza has sent shockwaves through the city, and actor Shuja Asad is among those who have chosen not to stay silent about it. Mir Raza was a young Karachi-based entrepreneur who had built a dessert brand called Wafflix from the ground up. At just 25, he was carving out a name for himself in the business world, the kind of story that Pakistan needs more of. Then, in a devastating and senseless turn, he was abducted in his hometown. His body was later found in Gulistan-e-Johar, another young life violently cut short in a city that has seen too many. Shuja Asad, who has been building a strong reputation through back-to-back hit drama projects, stepped away from his professional commitments and joined a protest at Bahadurabad demanding justice for Mir Raza. YouTuber Azlan Shah joined him at the demonstration, and both added their voices to a growing chorus of citizens asking how a young man building something legitimate could simply be taken and killed without accountability following. What made Asad’s presence and his remarks particularly pointed was the comparison he drew, one that landed hard with those who heard it. He noted that law enforcement agencies had been visibly active in responding to Wasim Akram’s missing dog, a situation that had generated its own wave of public attention, while a young man had been abducted and murdered without the same urgency or visible response. The contrast was stark and his willingness to name it publicly was widely appreciated. He also called directly on Karachiites to join the protest and demand that Mir Raza’s case be taken seriously. His message was clear: this was not someone else’s tragedy to grieve from a distance. This was a Karachi story, and the people of Karachi had a responsibility to show up. The response from the public was immediate and warm. “He is right. Young men of Karachi deserve better,” wrote one person. “Great brother Shuja,” said another. A third commenter offered direct appreciation: “You took a great stance.” The reactions reflected a genuine sense of gratitude that a public figure with reach had chosen to use that reach for something that mattered. For many ordinary Karachiites who have felt the helplessness of watching violence go unaddressed, seeing Shuja Asad standing at a protest rather than simply posting a condolence message from behind a screen carried real meaning. Mir Raza’s case is still being investigated. For his family and for everyone who knew him, the demand is simple and urgent.     HARIPUR: Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged abduction, sexual assault and murder of a five-year-old girl whose body was recovered from a deserted well in Haripur after an extensive search operation. Haripur District Police Officer Shafiullah Gandapur said the child was reported missing by her father on August 10. Police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code and launched a search operation to trace her. A special investigation team was subsequently formed, comprising senior police officers, investigators and female police officials. A separate technical team was assigned to examine digital evidence, including CCTV footage, call records and geofencing data. Police reviewed footage from around 200 cameras and examined the records of 20 suspected telephone numbers. Investigators said footage from 12 cameras proved particularly significant in reconstructing the child’s movements after she left home and identifying individuals allegedly travelling in the area on foot and on a motorcycle. Three suspects were initially arrested, and police also recovered a motorcycle allegedly used in the incident. According to police, one suspect recorded a statement before a court admitting his involvement in the alleged abduction and sexual assault. The other suspects were produced before the court for further legal proceedings. Police later arrested a fourth suspect. Information obtained during the investigation led officers to a deep, dry and overgrown well located on a vacant plot near Link Road on University Road, close to a warehouse. A search team, assisted by Rescue 1122 personnel, recovered the child’s body from the well. The recovery operation was monitored by the DPO and senior members of the investigation team. The body was shifted to the Rescue 1122 Trauma Centre in Haripur, where a post-mortem examination was conducted. Doctors collected X-rays and samples for DNA and other forensic examinations. The results are awaited. The investigation has faced additional difficulties because some suspects are reportedly underage and did not possess identity documents. Police said they therefore examined telephone records linked to their family members and other numbers considered relevant to the case. The search for the missing child involved hundreds of personnel. More than 400 police officials, along with staff from the Tehsil Municipal Administration and Water and Sanitation Agency, participated in searches covering drains, sewerage lines, vegetation, vacant plots and deserted locations around the University of Haripur, Pathan Colony and nearby areas. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed took notice of the case, while Hazara DIG Nasir Mahmood Satti visited Haripur to review the investigation. The DPO briefed him on the evidence collected, CCTV findings and progress in identifying and arresting the suspects. The DIG also met the victim’s family and assured them that the investigation would be pursued according to law. Meanwhile, K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the alleged crime and ordered a comprehensive investigation. He directed authorities to ensure that every aspect of the case was examined and that those found responsible were dealt with strictly under the law. The chief minister expressed condolences to the child’s family and said crimes against children would not be tolerated. He assured the family that the provincial government would support them and that the suspects would face legal consequences if found guilty.
