Pattaya Advances Plan for Three-Line Monorail Project

Pattaya City Mayor Poramese Ngamphichet on Thursday chaired a progress meeting on the revision of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the city’s proposed monorail mass transit system. The project comprises three lines: the Green Line, Red Line and Purple Line.

The meeting took place in Meeting Room 131 at Pattaya City Hall and was attended by Mr. Bancha Kulawanich, Secretary to the Mayor; Mr. Wachira Thongdeelert, Assistant Secretary to the Mayor; heads of relevant government agencies; and other related organisations. Project Engineer Mr. Jadur Paensuwan presented the latest progress report.

As a world-class family friendly tourist destination with strong economic potential, Pattaya has experienced rapid urban expansion and a steady rise in both residents and visitors. This growth has intensified traffic congestion, particularly along major roads and in key tourist zones. To address these challenges, the city has studied the feasibility and design of a monorail system designed at upgrading public transport, reducing private vehicle use, improving travel convenience and safety, and supporting future urban development.

The three proposed monorail routes are as follows:

– Green Line: The primary intra-city route linking business districts, tourist attractions and major economic areas. Key stops include Pattaya Railway Station, Dolphin Roundabout, Terminal 21 Pattaya, Central Festival Pattaya, Pattaya Night Bazaar, and Bali Hai Pier.

– Purple Line: A connecting route between Pattaya City and the Nong Prue area. It seeks to improve travel efficiency, ease traffic congestion within Pattaya and link with the Pattaya Railway Station.

– Red Line: A longer-term development plan that shares an initial section with the Green Line before branching off to run parallel to Jomtien Beach towards the National Stadium area. The line is intended to support development under the Neo Pattaya concept.

The meeting resolved that Pattaya City will proceed with revisions and the preparation of additional supporting data for the EIA report. Officials are currently compiling information and refining details. Further public hearings are expected between September and November 2026. A revised report will then be prepared and submitted for the subsequent review process, with the complete final report anticipated around January 2027.

Pattaya City remains committed to carefully following all environmental procedures while providing opportunities for public and business participation. The goal is to advance an efficient mass transit system that connects key areas, alleviates traffic problems, enhances residents’ quality of life, and supports Pattaya’s sustainable growth as a modern tourist and economic city.

However, she questioned why the reference would be considered offensive if a person themselves used the term “cockroach” to describe their identity or behavior. Kangana further rejected the interpretation that she had compared all young people to a gutter. She said that discussing problems such as drug use, betting, gambling or dark-web activities among a particular section of young people does not mean that the entire younger generation should be viewed in the same way. She questioned why comments about a specific group or certain women were being presented as a generalized criticism of all young people. The clarification comes amid continuing debate over the responsibilities that accompany personal freedom, particularly among young people. Kangana maintained that her intention was to highlight certain behaviors and social problems rather than criticize an entire generation. The controversy has once again drawn attention to Kangana’s outspoken public statements, which frequently generate strong reactions online and in political and entertainment circles. By clarifying her comments, the actress has sought to distance herself from the interpretation that she was labeling the entire younger generation as “gutter” or making a blanket criticism of young people.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the Commonwealth Games javelin gold medal with an impressive throw of 89.75 metres, while Nadeem was unable to defend his title at the event. Despite the setback, Nadeem remains one of Pakistan’s leading track and field athletes. He won Olympic gold in the men’s javelin throw at the Paris 2024 Olympics, producing an Olympic-record throw of 92.97 metres. The Lausanne event had initially attracted considerable attention because Nadeem was listed among a strong javelin field. His withdrawal means he will instead use the coming weeks to work on his form and conditioning in South Africa. Nadeem’s next major appearances are expected to include the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest from September 6 to 14, followed by the Asian Games.     Gastroenteritis and Cholera cases rise in Lahore

      Gastroenteritis and cholera cases have started emerging in Lahore and surrounding areas, raising concerns about the quality of drinking water, food hygiene and sanitation in the city. Health officials have reported a significant number of patients suffering from gastrointestinal illnesses at basic health centres, dispensaries and district health units across Lahore. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Health Lahore, Dr Asif Niazi, said that gastroenteritis cases were being reported at basic health centres, dispensaries and district health units. According to him, approximately 7,000 people were affected by gastroenteritis during the month of July. Dr Niazi further revealed that basic health centres were receiving an average of 271 gastroenteritis patients every day. He said that a significant proportion of those affected were children, with most patients falling between the ages of five and 10. The increasing number of cases has also been observed at major teaching hospitals in Lahore. Senior Medical Officer Dr Mustafa Kamal said that patients suffering from gastroenteritis and cholera were being brought to teaching hospitals for treatment. He stated that Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was receiving between 150 and 200 such patients within a 24-hour period. According to Dr Kamal, a high incidence of dysentery is one of the major symptoms associated with cholera. He added that cholera cases were also being reported in the emergency department and outpatient department of Mayo Hospital. The health officials have linked the rise in gastrointestinal diseases to unsafe drinking water and unhygienic food. Senior Medical Officer Dr Kazim said that contaminated water was one of the major factors contributing to the spread of cholera and other gastrointestinal illnesses. He also warned against consuming food sold by roadside vendors, saying that unhygienic food from carts and stalls could increase the risk of cholera and diarrhoea. According to the medical officer, ice sold in local markets could also be a potential source of contamination and may contribute to the spread of cholera and diarrhoea. Health experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of clean drinking water, proper sanitation and food hygiene in preventing waterborne diseases. Gastroenteritis can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dehydration, while cholera can become particularly dangerous if severe dehydration is not treated promptly. The situation is particularly concerning for children, who can become dehydrated quickly after repeated episodes of diarrhoea or vomiting. With most reported gastroenteritis patients reportedly between five and 10 years of age, health authorities and families may need to pay particular attention to children’s water and food consumption. Residents have been advised to take precautions by drinking safe and properly treated water, maintaining hand hygiene and avoiding food and beverages prepared under unhygienic conditions. Particular caution may also be necessary when purchasing ice, as contaminated water used in its preparation can potentially transmit waterborne infections. The rising number of cases has highlighted the need for improved monitoring of drinking-water sources, food outlets and roadside vendors in Lahore and its surrounding areas. Authorities may also need to strengthen public awareness campaigns about preventive measures and ensure that affected patients have timely access to medical treatment. With thousands of cases reported in July and hospitals continuing to receive patients, health officials are closely monitoring the situation. Ensuring access to clean water and safe food remains essential to controlling the spread of gastroenteritis, cholera and other waterborne diseases across Lahore.

    LAHORE: The Lahore High Court ( LHC) has overturned the life imprisonment sentence of a man convicted of murdering his wife, ruling that the prosecution failed to establish his guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh issued a detailed 19-page written judgment, allowing the appeal filed by the convict, Tanveer, and ordering his immediate release. According to the verdict, Tanveer maintained that he was on duty at a petrol station at the time of the incident and denied any involvement in the killing of his wife. The court observed that the prosecution had failed to produce reliable and convincing evidence to support the allegations against him. The judgment concluded that the available evidence was insufficient to sustain the conviction, leading the court to set aside the trial court’s decision and acquit the appellant. Tanveer had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 by a trial court after being found guilty of his wife’s murder. In addition to the prison term, he was fined Rs400,000. He later challenged the conviction before the Lahore High Court, which has now ruled in his favor.

    ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi made an unannounced visit to the under-construction headquarters of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in Islamabad and expressed concern over the slow pace of development work. During his inspection, Naqvi reviewed the progress of the headquarters upgrade project and questioned officials about the delays. A worker informed the minister that only nine workers were currently assigned to the site and that construction activities had remained suspended for several days. Expressing dissatisfaction over the situation, Naqvi contacted the relevant authorities on the spot and instructed them to immediately accelerate construction work. He stressed the need for timely completion of the project and directed officials to ensure that progress was maintained. The surprise inspection comes as the government seeks to strengthen the country’s institutional capacity to tackle cybercrime through the NCCIA.
