Phetchaburi launches Thai clothing campaign

Phetchaburi has launched a Thai clothing campaign aimed at encouraging residents to wear local fabrics and preserve cultural heritage, as part of a wider push to promote national identity and support the local economy.

The campaign, titled “Proud to Wear Thai Across the Nation”, was officially introduced on 2 April by Phetchaburi Governor Police Lieutenant Colonel Phopchonok Chalanukroh. He was joined by deputy governors, senior officials and representatives from multiple agencies in promoting the initiative.

Under the campaign, residents, civil servants and organisations across the province are being encouraged to wear traditional Thai clothing, locally woven fabrics and ethnic attire in their daily lives and on special occasions.

Campaign aims to boost culture and local economy

The governor said Phetchaburi’s strong cultural foundations, including its long-standing textile weaving traditions and diverse ethnic communities, made it well placed to lead such an initiative. He added that wearing Thai clothing, whether in contemporary styles or traditional forms such as Thai Song Dam or Karen dress, reflects pride in national identity and helps safeguard cultural heritage.

The Thai clothing campaign also aligns with the Ministry of Culture’s policy to promote Thai fabrics more widely, positioning fashion and cultural identity as part of the country’s soft power strategy.

Officials expect the initiative to provide economic benefits at a local level, particularly for weaving groups, tailors and small businesses. Increased demand for locally produced textiles is expected to create jobs and generate income within communities across the province.

In addition to its cultural and economic impact, the campaign is seen as supporting tourism by presenting a distinctive visual identity. Authorities believe this could encourage both Thai and international visitors to engage more closely with the province’s traditions and way of life.

Phetchaburi officials are inviting residents to take part by incorporating Thai fabrics into everyday wear, with the aim of preserving cultural practices while contributing to sustainable local economic growth.
