Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders detained at Kot Lakhpat Jail have expressed support for Jamaat-e-Islami’s ongoing sit-in.

A letter from the imprisoned PTI leaders was read out during the Jamaat-e-Islami protest. The letter was signed by senior PTI leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sarfraz Cheema, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry and Mahmood-ur-Rasheed.

In their letter, the detained leaders appealed to the public to participate in the Jamaat-e-Islami sit-in. They urged citizens to support the protest and raise their voices on political and public issues.

The support from the imprisoned PTI leaders comes as Jamaat-e-Islami continues its protest and demands action on issues highlighted by the party.

The letter was presented to participants at the sit-in, conveying the PTI leaders’ position despite their detention at Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore has called for the release of all political prisoners. The party has also specifically demanded the release of PTI founder Imran Khan.

Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore maintained that political prisoners should be released and called for political issues to be addressed through democratic and legal means.

    Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Police have accused the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) of pursuing an agenda aimed at creating unrest in the region. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Khawar Ali Shaukat made the allegations during a press conference in Rawalakot on Wednesday. The police official said recent violence in Rawalakot had raised serious questions about the group’s claim that it was engaged in peaceful protests. Shaukat alleged that armed groups attacked security personnel at several locations across the city over the past two days. According to the police official, the attackers used sophisticated weapons during the clashes. He said security personnel came under repeated fire during the incidents. The SSP said one Rangers official was martyred in the violence. He added that around 15 police officers and other law enforcement personnel were injured. Shaukat claimed that several suspects had been arrested in connection with the attacks. He said a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition was recovered from those taken into custody. The recovered weapons allegedly included heavy arms. Police also claimed to have seized an automatic weapon believed to be of American origin. The SSP said the recovery raised concerns about the nature and objectives of the group involved in the violence. He accused the proscribed organisation of attempting to disrupt peace in AJK and create divisions within society. Shaukat also rejected claims circulating on social media that security forces had deliberately targeted peaceful protesters. He said the situation on the ground was different from the narrative being presented online. According to the police official, law enforcement agencies exercised restraint throughout the unrest. He claimed that security personnel responded only after coming under attack. The latest police statement comes after clashes between protesters and security forces in different parts of AJK. Violence was reported in Rawalakot on Monday and in Mirpur on Tuesday. The clashes reportedly resulted in several casualties, although details surrounding the losses remained disputed. The JAAC has been holding protests across the region for several weeks. Among its demands is the abolition of 12 seats in the local legislature reserved for refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir. The dispute has led to growing tensions between protesters and the authorities. The government has also accused militant elements of exploiting the protests. It has alleged that some groups involved in the unrest are pursuing a foreign agenda and receiving financial support from India. The JAAC has rejected such allegations and accused security forces of using excessive force against its supporters. The group has claimed that dozens of its supporters were killed during clashes. However, the claim has not been officially confirmed. The competing claims have added to uncertainty surrounding the situation in AJK.     PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has rejected a proposed deduction of Rs6.4 billion from the province’s federal financial transfers. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the federal government had sought an additional amount from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa before the provincial budget. The provincial government had linked the release of the additional funds to a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan and his approval. Afridi said the KP government neither approved nor agreed to the proposed deduction of Rs6.4 billion. He said the additional federal grant had also not been included in the provincial budget for the 2026-27 financial year. The chief minister said the matter was not merely a political dispute but concerned the province’s constitutional and financial rights. He maintained that Article 164 of the Constitution does not give the federal government the authority to unilaterally deduct money payable to a province. According to Afridi, any such deduction requires a clear constitutional or legal basis as well as the consent of the provincial government. He said the Finance Department had clearly conveyed its disagreement with the proposed deduction in a letter issued on August 13. Written instructions were also issued that no deduction should be made without the province’s consent. Afridi said Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam immediately met the relevant officials of the Accountant General KP. The Accountant General of Pakistan Revenues was also directed not to record or implement any transaction without the clear consent of the provincial government. The chief minister said the provincial government had decided to prepare a summary and ordinance under the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) after the province did not receive its share for six months. He said the provincial government did not sign the memorandum of understanding concerning the additional amount because a meeting with the PTI founder was not arranged. Afridi said the KP government had already approached the Federal Constitutional Court to seek its constitutional rights under the National Finance Commission. He made it clear that the provincial government would not compromise on its NFC rights. The chief minister further said the federal government had no authority to unilaterally deduct money on the basis of an unapproved memorandum of understanding. He vowed that the provincial government would use every legal and constitutional avenue to protect its rights and defend every rupee of its financial share. Afridi also said that if the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) achieved its Rs15.26 trillion tax collection target, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s share would amount to approximately Rs175 billion. He added that providing the merged districts with their rightful share under the 11th NFC was also one of the provincial government’s conditions.

    China and Japan have offered different versions of whether their foreign ministers spoke during last week’s ASEAN meetings in the Philippines, highlighting the continued strain in relations between the two neighboring countries. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said after the regional gathering that he had briefly spoken with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi when the two crossed paths during the event. According to Motegi, the short conversation included discussion about bilateral relations, which Japan considers an important step in maintaining communication despite ongoing tensions. However, China’s Foreign Ministry rejected that account. Speaking at a regular press briefing on Monday, spokesperson Lin Jian said Wang Yi had no meeting scheduled with the Japanese side during his visit to Manila and insisted that no informal conversation or exchange took place at the venue. The conflicting statements reflect the growing diplomatic divide between Beijing and Tokyo, whose relationship has worsened significantly since last November. The decline followed comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan, which China strongly condemned. Japan has expressed interest in improving ties with China and continues to support dialogue at every level. Motegi said maintaining communication is essential because both countries play a major role in preserving peace and stability across the region. Although he described his interaction with Wang as a discussion on bilateral relations, Japanese media reported that the exchange was limited to greetings and brief pleasantries. Prime Minister Takaichi said on Monday that contacts between the two governments remain active through various diplomatic channels, including the exchange Motegi referred to during the ASEAN meeting. The current tensions stem from remarks Takaichi made shortly after becoming prime minister. During a parliamentary session, she was asked whether a Chinese military blockade or attack on Taiwan could trigger Japan’s collective self defense policy. She replied that such a situation could threaten Japan’s survival and therefore might meet the legal conditions for military involvement alongside an ally, most likely the United States. China viewed those comments as crossing a major diplomatic red line. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and strongly opposes any statement or action that it believes supports Taiwan’s independence or suggests foreign military involvement in a future conflict. Taiwan, meanwhile, governs itself independently despite China’s territorial claims. Although Takaichi later said she would avoid discussing specific military scenarios in future parliamentary debates, she has refused to withdraw her original remarks. Her position has continued to frustrate Beijing and has made efforts to restore stable relations more difficult. The dispute has affected more than diplomacy. Economic ties have also been impacted, with reports of fewer Chinese tourists visiting Japan and growing concern in both countries over each other’s expanding military capabilities. The disagreement over what happened during the ASEAN meeting has become another sign of the deep mistrust that continues to shape relations between Asia’s two largest economies.

Speaking about the film’s upcoming release, director and producer Bhargav Saikia expressed his excitement about finally presenting Bokshi to Indian viewers. Saikia also described Bokshi as a horror film created with young audiences in mind and said it was designed to be experienced on the big screen. Veteran actress Shernaz Patel lends her voice to the titular character, adding another layer to the film’s mysterious narrative.
