KARACHI: Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged a protest near Fawara Chowk in Karachi to express solidarity with the party’s founder, leading to clashes with police and widespread traffic disruptions across the city.

According to reports, PTI workers pelted police with stones during the demonstration. In response, police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the protesters. The unrest forced nearby businesses to shut down, while commuters and residents faced significant inconvenience.

Police detained several PTI leaders and workers, including PTI Sindh Secretary General Dr Masroor Sial.

The protest caused severe traffic congestion around Governor House, Metropole, and Shaheen Complex. Authorities closed multiple roads to traffic, including the stretch from M.R. Kiani Road to Fawara Chowk and Din Muhammad Wafai Road.

The route from Coast Guard to Regal Chowk and Sarwar Shaheed Road was also closed. In addition, the road from M.T. Khan Road towards PIDC remained blocked.

Traffic restrictions were also imposed on both tracks of Zamzama Street and Khayaban-e-Shamshir, as well as both sides of Sir Shah Suleman Road from Quba Masjid, Ghareebabad, to Liaquatabad.

Motorists were advised to use alternative routes as authorities worked to manage the situation.

The findings have not yet provided a definitive explanation for the deaths. Authorities are waiting for the histopathology results before determining the final cause. The families of the deceased have meanwhile called for an independent and transparent investigation. Tajamul Hussain, the father of one of the women, rejected the police version that the deaths were linked to a medical condition. He questioned how both women could have suffered fatal heart problems while in custody and alleged that they were killed. Police have denied the allegations. SSP Investigation Naveed Ahmed said the women had previous criminal records and were arrested after a passerby contacted Police Emergency 15 and reported that they had allegedly snatched an earring. The officer also claimed that the women used drugs but firmly rejected allegations that they were tortured or mistreated during their detention. With the histopathology reports still awaited, the investigation is expected to focus on the women’s medical condition, their treatment while in custody and the circumstances leading up to their deaths.

Viewers in the Northeast and Upper Midwest may notice something different this time around: the moon appearing more orange or red than usual. That’s being linked to smoke drifting down from wildfires burning in Canada, which has settled into the atmosphere as a haze. Pamela Gay, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, explained that the same smoky layer responsible for dimming daytime skies is also what’s tinting the moon’s color. As for the name itself, “buck moon” refers to the time of year when male deer begin growing new antlers. Other cultures have their own names for this particular full moon. The Dakota call it the moon of ripe chokecherries, while the Cree know it as the feather-moulting moon. Petro also drew a connection to NASA’s Artemis II mission, which sent four astronauts on a flight around the moon back in April, describing moments like this full moon as a reminder of humanity’s ongoing connection to what is happening on the moon itself. Looking ahead, five more full moons remain on the calendar for 2026, with November and December set to bring supermoons, when the moon reaches its closest approach to Earth.
