Dera Ghazi Khan: A large number of people from all walks of life attended the Qul ceremony of legendary qawwal Ustad Noor Muhammad Nizami, held in Taunsa Sharif. The renowned qawwal, who passed away on 6 August 2026 after battling lung complications since 5 July, was 86. Prayers were offered for the departed soul, and admirers paid tribute to his lifelong contributions to Qawwali and Sufi music.

Born in 1940, Ustad Noor Muhammad was the torchbearer of a glorious seven-generation Qawwal legacy, rooted in the soil of Taunsa. His seventh forefather, Mian Ahmad, was brought from Mahaar Sharif to Taunsa by Khawajah Shah Sulaiman Taunsavi of the Chishti Order.

For seven generations, his family has devoted their art to the shrine of Taunsa, offering soul-stirring Qawwali in service of the divine.

Ustad Noor Muhammad began his musical journey at the tender age of seven, singing at shrine Mahmoodia Taunsa in the presence of Khawajah Nizamudin Taunsvi. His musical education was nurtured by his uncle, Ghulam Sarwar, who guided him in the classical traditions. He was a master of the Kaafi Thaath and Raag Darbari, and his renditions of Ghazal, Kaafi, and Qawwali captivated audiences for decades.

From 1970 to 1974, he lent his voice to Radio Pakistan Multan, enriching the airwaves with his timeless artistry. He shared deep bonds with the members of the Sham Chaurasi and Patiala clans, who held him in the highest esteem as a friend and fellow maestro.

Ustad Noor Muhammad Nizami leaves behind a grieving family—three sons, Mazhar Ali, Azhar Ali, and Imran Haider, who courageously carry forward his legacy, along with five daughters and a host of grandchildren. His voice may have fallen silent, but his spirit lives on in every note his sons sing and in the hearts of all who were blessed to hear him.

    Government college students excel in Karachi inter…

    KARACHI: The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) on Friday announced the results of the Intermediate Part-II annual examinations 2026. Students from government colleges secured top positions in several groups, highlighting the strong performance of public-sector educational institutions. BIEK Chairman Professor Ghaffar Muhammad Lakho said the results were encouraging for government colleges. He noted that the top two positions in the pre-medical group were won by students of a government college. According to him, this reflects the growing trust of students and parents in public-sector education. In the pre-medical group, Hafsa Khan of BAMM PECHS Government College for Women secured first position. She scored 1,011 marks out of a total of 1,100. Her classmate Huda Sarwar claimed the second position with 1,007 marks. Amina Aziz of Bahria College, Karsaz, secured third place after obtaining 1,004 marks. Controller of Examinations Zarina Rashid said that 23,613 students registered for the pre-medical examinations. A total of 23,007 candidates appeared in the exams. Out of them, 14,134 students passed. The overall pass percentage in the pre-medical group remained 61.43%. Female students dominated the Arts Private Group by securing all top three positions. Rafia Shoaib Jaliwala topped the group with 925 marks. Almas Fatima and Khansa Raza jointly secured the second position with 902 marks each. Amra Shoaib Jaliwala stood third after scoring 901 marks. Students also performed well in the Home Economics Group. Azka Imran of Rana Liaquat Ali Khan Government College of Home Economics secured first position with 973 marks out of 1,200. Aila Anwar obtained second position with 968 marks. Yamna Shariq secured third place by scoring 953 marks. Special candidates also recorded an impressive performance. In the Arts Regular category, Syed Hammad Ali secured first position with 1,004 marks. Taha Ahmed came second with 990 marks, while Maryam Bibi claimed third position after scoring 985 marks. The board said the pass percentage in the Arts Private Group stood at 50.04%. The Home Economics Group recorded a pass rate of 52.47%. The highest success ratio was observed among special candidates, where the pass percentage reached 95.87%.

  • Senate questions authorities over years of neglect at Mazar e Quaid

    Islamabad: The Senate Sub Committee on National Heritage and Culture has raised serious concerns over the condition of Quaid e Azam’s Mausoleum, questioning the slow maintenance work, damaged boundary walls, cleanliness issues and security arrangements at one of Pakistan’s most important national monuments. The issue came under discussion during a meeting of the Sub Committee held at Parliament Lodges, Islamabad, under the chairmanship of Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi. The meeting was held to review progress on earlier recommendations regarding administrative, renovation and development matters of Quaid e Azam’s Mausoleum and its surrounding areas. Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi expressed concern over wall chalking and the poor condition of the boundary wall around Mazar e Quaid. He directed the concerned authorities to start urgent renovation work. Federal Secretary for National Heritage and Culture Mr. Asad Rehman Gillani informed the Committee that the boundary wall had not received proper maintenance since 2017 and assured that the issue would be addressed soon. Senator Bushra Anjum Butt also expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of attention given to the national heritage site and questioned why such an important symbol of Pakistan was not receiving the required priority from relevant authorities. The Committee reviewed several operational issues including security, electricity and water supply. Mr. Asad Rehman Gillani informed the Committee that some problems had already been resolved, while remaining matters would be completed at the earliest. The meeting was attended by Senator Bushra Anjum Butt and Senator Sarmad Ali through Zoom. Representatives of the Quaid e Azam Mazar Management Board also participated. Officials from K Electric, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, Karachi administration and police authorities also attended the meeting. The Committee directed authorities to improve security arrangements at the Mausoleum by installing CCTV cameras across the premises and ensuring deployment of sufficient police personnel. Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi also directed that a complete security plan should be prepared before reopening the Mausoleum for the general public, including deployment of a Special Security Unit. During the discussion, the Committee also raised concerns regarding individuals involved in drug abuse found inside the Mausoleum premises. SSP East Karachi informed the Committee that such individuals are usually granted bail within two to three days after legal proceedings and are later referred to the Edhi Foundation for rehabilitation. Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi also highlighted financial concerns regarding the maintenance of Mazar e Quaid. He observed that the Government of Sindh currently carries the financial responsibility for maintaining the Mausoleum and suggested that other provinces, Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir should also contribute annually towards its maintenance and operational expenses. The Committee expressed dissatisfaction over incomplete sanitation work around the Mausoleum. Officials informed that general waste had been removed, but construction debris was still present in surrounding areas. Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi directed immediate removal of all remaining waste and debris. The Committee also took notice of coordination issues among government departments and expressed displeasure over the absence of the Director General Karachi Development Authority from the meeting. To improve coordination, Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi directed all concerned departments to create a dedicated communication group where updates regarding Mazar e Quaid improvement work could be shared quickly. He also instructed officials to provide before and after pictures of development and maintenance activities. The Committee further directed that one Member of the National Assembly and one Senator from Karachi should be included in the Quaid e Azam Mazar Management Board. It also recommended including the President of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Board to improve public and business sector involvement. The Sub Committee will hold another follow up meeting after August 14 to review the progress of all departments and assess whether the required improvements have been completed.

    Eight Sindh public university vice chancellors see…

    The vice chancellors of eight public-sector universities in Sindh have reportedly begun efforts to secure extensions as their first terms in office are set to expire over the coming months. The development follows the reported extension granted to Professor Dr Nusrat Shah, vice chancellor of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University Larkana and daughter of former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. According to reports, the first four-year term of Dr Nusrat Shah is due to end on January 1, 2027. Sources at the Sindh Chief Minister’s House said a summary seeking her extension has reached the chief minister while reports suggest that approval may already have been granted. However, the reported approval has not been independently confirmed. The extension issue is expected to become a major challenge for the Sindh government which serves as the controlling authority for public universities in the province. Sources said that the reported development regarding Dr Nusrat Shah has encouraged other vice chancellors whose tenures are also approaching completion to seek extensions. The vice chancellors of several universities are expected to complete their current terms between January and March 2027. Among them are Dr Iqbal Uddin Aijaz of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro and Dr Zahid Hussain Khand of Aror University of Art, Architecture, Design and Heritage Sukkur. Their five-year terms are expected to end on January 1 and January 19, 2027, respectively. Sources said summaries concerning their possible extensions could also be forwarded to the provincial government soon. The report also mentions a controversy involving Dr Iqbaluddin Aijaz with questions reportedly being raised over multiple gold medals awarded to his son at the university. The issue could potentially affect consideration of his extension, according to sources. Other university heads whose terms are approaching completion include Shaheed Allah Buksh Soomro University Vice Chancellor Arabela Bhutto, IBA Sukkur Vice Chancellor Dr Asif Sheikh, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Vice Chancellor Dr Taha Hussain, Nusrat Bhutto Women University Sukkur Vice Chancellor Tehmina Nungraj and Dawood University of Engineering and Technology Karachi Vice Chancellor Dr Samreen Hussain. The provincial government has recently extended the tenure of only one vice chancellor, Dr Amjad Siraj Memon of Jinnah Sindh Medical University. Meanwhile, extension proposals for Dr Khalid Iraqi and Dr Farooq Hassan have reportedly been rejected. The emerging situation is likely to place further attention on the Sindh government’s policy for appointing and extending the terms of public university vice chancellors.

    PPP leads in two AJK seats as PML-N wins one

    MUZAFFARABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party is leading in two constituencies in the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is ahead in one seat. An independent candidate has also secured victory in another constituency, according to unofficial results. Polling was held in four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli districts in the Poonch division. However, voting could not take place at several polling stations because of unrest and security concerns. In LA-15 Bagh-2, PPP candidate Zia Qamar was leading after results from most polling stations were received. PML-N candidate Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas was in second place. PML-N candidate Sardar Mir Akbar Khan was leading in LA-16 Eastern Bagh. He was ahead of PPP candidate Sardar Qamar Zaman Khan, making the constituency the strongest prospect for the PML-N in the third phase. In LA-17 Haveli-Kahuta, PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was ahead of PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz in the closely contested race. An unexpected result emerged from LA-14 Western Bagh. Independent candidate Sardar Sajid Iqbal Abbasi defeated former AJK prime minister and Muslim Conference leader Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan in his home constituency. The AJK Election Commission has also announced re-polling at 23 polling stations. The exercise will take place on August 15. According to Election Commission officials, voting will be repeated at nine polling stations in LA-16 and 14 stations in LA-15. Polling at these locations could not be conducted during the earlier round because of unrest. Elections in five constituencies of Poonch and two constituencies of Sudhnoti have been postponed. The authorities are expected to announce new dates after reviewing the security situation. Meanwhile, PML-N candidate Mohsin Aziz has demanded a recount in LA-17 Bagh-4. His request was rejected by the Returning Officer, prompting PML-N workers to stage a sit-in outside the RO office. Aziz said the protest would continue until the votes were recounted. The demand has added another layer of uncertainty to the closely contested election process. The PPP has also raised allegations of electoral irregularities. Party leaders have accused authorities of disrupting polling and creating difficulties for voters and polling agents. PPP representatives have called for an impartial review of complaints. They said the Election Commission should examine allegations of irregularities to ensure that the voters’ mandate is protected. PPP Senator Sherry Rehman had earlier raised concerns over delays in polling. She also alleged that party polling agents were stopped from entering some polling stations. The PML-N has rejected the allegations of widespread rigging. Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said the PPP was using the rigging narrative to cover what he described as an electoral setback. He also called for an end to protests and sit-ins. Sanaullah said legitimate demands would be considered by the government, while warning that violence and armed activity would be dealt with according to law. The PML-N remains in a strong position overall after the first two phases of the AJK elections. It won nine of 13 seats in the Mirpur division during the first phase. In the second phase, the party secured 15 seats from the Muzaffarabad division and refugee seats. The PPP won four seats in the first phase and six in the second. The PML-N has so far secured 24 seats across the first two phases, while the PPP has won 10. The ruling party has said it needs only a few additional seats to reach a two-thirds majority in the AJK Assembly.

    Child’s refusal to buckle up leads to flight cancellation in Canada

    A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria to Toronto was cancelled after a young child refused to sit in the assigned seat and fasten the seat belt. The incident happened on flight PD444 at Victoria International Airport in British Columbia. The aircraft had already left the terminal. It was preparing for takeoff when crew members noticed the child standing on the seat. Flight attendants tried to resolve the situation. The child’s parents also attempted to convince the youngster to sit down. However, the child continued to resist. The crew could not proceed with the flight while the safety issue remained unresolved. Aviation safety rules require passengers to remain seated and use seat belts when instructed. The aircraft therefore had to return to the terminal. The family was removed from the plane. Their baggage also had to be taken off the aircraft. Airport and airline staff then had to complete the required travel and security procedures. The process took considerable time. The procedures continued beyond 12:30am. Victoria International Airport closes its main runway at 12:30am every night. Because the runway had already closed, the aircraft could not take off again that night. The cancellation caused further inconvenience for the other passengers. They were forced to spend the night in Victoria. Porter Airlines apologised to the affected passengers for the disruption. The airline arranged alternative flights for them the following day. The incident highlights how even a seemingly minor safety issue can cause major delays when an aircraft is preparing for departure. Airlines are required to ensure that all passengers follow safety instructions before takeoff
