Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, said it was true that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had instructed party leaders not to respond to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent statements. He added that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) strongly disagreed with both the content and tone of Naqvi’s remarks.

Speaking on a television programme, Rana Sanaullah described Mohsin Naqvi’s comments as “meaningless” and lacking context. He said he had listened to Naqvi’s speech but could not understand what message he was trying to convey.

“It appeared that he wanted to make a significant point but failed to explain it properly. Once he made the statement, his subsequent remarks contradicted one another. I simply could not understand what he was saying or why he was saying it,” Rana Sanaullah said.

He stressed that whenever a person makes a public statement, it reflects their personal opinion, adding that it was up to Mohsin Naqvi to clarify the intent behind his remarks and take responsibility for their interpretation.

Responding to Naqvi’s proposal regarding the creation of new administrative units or provinces, Rana Sanaullah said such matters could not be decided merely through public statements.

“You cannot simply talk about new provinces and expect them to come into existence. The Constitution clearly defines the procedure for creating new provinces or administrative units,” he said.

He maintained that the issue should first be debated in Parliament, while the final decision would rest with the leadership of the political parties.

Rana Sanaullah recalled that during the PML-N government in Punjab from 2013 to 2018, the party had formally proposed the creation of new provinces. He said he had personally presented both the resolution and the proposal for establishing a commission to examine the matter.

He explained that a national commission would have to be formed to review all aspects of creating new provinces, including financial resources, administrative arrangements and constitutional requirements.

“The commission would also need to consult on representation in the National Assembly, provincial assemblies and the Senate. This is a highly complex issue that requires serious deliberation by experienced policymakers,” he said.

Rana Sanaullah added that Pakistan could adopt smaller provinces, a stronger local government system, or even both, but such decisions should be made collectively by political parties after thorough consultation

Voters will choose the next representative for the Sindh Assembly as polling continues under heightened security arrangements across Khairpur.

    DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Two police personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), were martyred after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police van in the Daraban area of Dera Ismail Khan on Friday, authorities said. According to officials from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), the attack occurred near Shah Alam Mor, where the police team was travelling to conduct an operation after receiving intelligence about the presence of suspected militants in the area. As the police van reached the location, armed assailants launched a sudden attack, firing multiple rounds at the vehicle. The officers immediately returned fire, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire. Despite the retaliation, two police officials, including an ASI, sustained critical injuries and were martyred in the line of duty. Officials said the attackers managed to flee the scene under the cover of the exchange of fire. Security forces quickly cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. Investigators are collecting evidence from the scene while intelligence agencies are assisting in identifying those responsible for the assault. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities are treating it as an act of terrorism. The latest incident highlights the persistent security challenges in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where law enforcement personnel have increasingly come under attack during counterterrorism operations. Police officials vowed that those behind the ambush would be brought to justice, reaffirming their commitment to continuing operations against militant groups despite the growing threats.     KAMPALA: Uganda’s football world has been plunged into mourning after national team captain David Owere died following a brutal attack during an alleged robbery near his home in Kampala. The 27-year-old footballer was reportedly confronted by suspected robbers in the Makindye area while they attempted to steal his mobile phone and other valuables. Police said Owere resisted the attackers, triggering a violent assault that left the young captain critically injured. Witnesses said the attackers allegedly pelted Owere with stones before fleeing the scene. He was found unconscious and was quickly taken to a nearby clinic for treatment. As his condition remained serious, Owere was later transferred to a private hospital. Despite receiving medical care, the footballer succumbed to his injuries, bringing a sudden and tragic end to the life of one of Uganda’s emerging football leaders. His death has shocked supporters and the football community across the country. Owere was a key figure for both the Uganda national team and SC Villa, one of Uganda’s most successful clubs.     Gen Aamer Raza honoured with Nishan-i-Imtiaz

    Commander National Strategic Command General Syed Aamer Raza has been conferred the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military), one of Pakistan’s highest military honours. President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the prestigious award on General Syed Aamer Raza during a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad. President Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the chiefs of the armed services attended the ceremony. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the chairman of the Senate, federal ministers and other senior government officials were also present. The ceremony was held to recognise General Aamer Raza’s services and contributions in his capacity as Commander National Strategic Command. General Raza has previously received two major military honours, the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-i-Basalat. Before his latest appointment, he was serving as Chief of General Staff. The position is considered one of the Pakistan Army’s key operational assignments. During his tenure, he was involved in implementing organisational changes following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. He also oversaw restructuring within the military after last year’s conflict with India. The changes included the creation of the Army Rocket Force Command, as part of efforts to strengthen the army’s organisational and operational capabilities. General Raza began his military career as a cavalry officer. He trained at the Officers Training School and was commissioned into the 6th Lancers in 1988. Over the course of his career, he held several important command positions. These included command of an armoured regiment and an armoured brigade. He also commanded an infantry brigade in South Waziristan. Later, he served as the commander of an infantry division. His senior field appointments included command of Lahore-based IV Corps, one of the Pakistan Army’s major corps formations. General Raza has also held a number of important institutional and staff positions. He headed Heavy Industries Taxila, a major defence production organisation. He also served as Director General of Weapons and Equipment. In another senior assignment, he worked as Chief of Staff at II Corps. His professional background has largely focused on conventional military operations, command responsibilities and force development. Unlike some senior officers associated with Pakistan’s strategic institutions, General Raza has not served in the Strategic Plans Division or the Army Strategic Forces Command. He has also not held an appointment directly linked to the country’s strategic missile programme.

    PML-N clinches nine of 13 AJK seats

    The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has secured a major victory in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, winning nine of the 13 seats in the Mirpur division, according to preliminary results. The first phase of polling was held across the Mirpur division on Monday. The election was closely contested, particularly between the PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). However, the PML-N managed to establish a clear lead by winning most of the constituencies. Preliminary election results showed that the PML-N secured nine seats, while the PPP won four constituencies. The PML-N candidates emerged victorious in Dadyal, Khari Sharif, Barnala, Samahni, Bhimber, Nakyal, Sehnsa, Charhoi and Khuiratta. The party’s performance gave it a strong position in the division following an intense election campaign. The PPP, meanwhile, managed to win four constituencies. Its successful candidates secured the key Mirpur seat, two seats in Kotli and another constituency in Chakswari. Several constituencies witnessed closely fought contests. In LA-1 (Mirpur-I), PML-N candidate Azhar Sadiq secured victory after receiving 15,427 votes. His rival, Muhammad Afzal Shahid, received 9,832 votes. Another tight contest was witnessed in LA-5 (Mirpur-I), where PML-N’s Waqar Ahmed Noor defeated PPP candidate Chaudhry Pervaiz Ashraf. Noor secured 29,821 votes, while Ashraf received 29,100 votes. The PML-N candidate won the seat by a narrow margin of 721 votes. In LA-7 (Bhimber-III), PML-N candidate Tariq Farooq secured a more convincing victory. He received 37,613 votes, while former AJK prime minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq finished second with 25,534 votes. The polling process was not without controversy. Reports of clashes and disturbances emerged from different areas during voting. Both the PML-N and PPP also exchanged allegations of electoral irregularities during the campaign and polling process. The AJK elections are being conducted in three phases due to security considerations. With the first phase now completed in the Mirpur division, attention has shifted towards the remaining constituencies. The second phase is scheduled for August 2. It will cover nine constituencies of the Muzaffarabad division as well as the 12 refugee constituencies. The third and final phase will take place on August 10. Polling will be held in 11 constituencies of the Poonch division.
