Rising Fuel Costs in Thailand Threaten to Push Grocery Prices Higher

BANGKOK – Rising fuel and transport costs are threatening to drive up prices of essential goods across Thailand, with consumer staples already showing signs of inflationary pressure as the Commerce Ministry works to stabilise retail prices until at least April.

Rising Fuel Costs Force Fishing Fleets Across Thailand to Dock

Somchai Pornrattanajaroen, honorary adviser to the Thai Wholesale and Retail Trade Association, said consumer goods were already being affected by higher energy costs and the government’s clearer energy policies, which have created ripple effects throughout supply chains.

Palm Oil Prices Climb

Bottled palm oil has been among the first items to see noticeable price increases, with one-litre bottles rising by five to eight baht depending on the brand. Wholesale prices have climbed from 41–42 baht to 48–49 baht per bottle, pushing retail prices in small shops to between 50 and 53 baht.

According to Mr Somchai, manufacturers have not notified customers in advance of these changes. Instead, they have signalled upcoming price adjustments by withdrawing promotional campaigns and suspending orders before announcing higher prices.

Two main factors are driving the increase in palm oil prices. Government policies promoting biodiesel have diverted significant volumes of crude palm oil into fuel production, reducing the supply available for household consumption. Additionally, rising packaging costs, particularly for plastic bottles, have contributed to the upward pressure, though industry estimates suggest this accounts for no more than one baht per bottle.

Wider Impact on Consumer Goods

Other essential items are also being affected. Bottled drinking water has seen wholesale price increases, with low-cost 500-millilitre packs rising from 20 baht to 25 baht due to higher plastic resin costs linked to oil prices and increased transport expenses.

Meanwhile, manufacturers of low-priced snack products have begun discontinuing items priced at five baht per pack, citing production costs that are no longer economically viable at that price point.

Government Response

Wittayakorn Maneenetr, director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, offered a more measured assessment of the situation, stating that retail prices for palm oil currently range between 42 and 50 baht depending on the brand, with no price hikes officially confirmed by producers or retailers.

“As a controlled product under the Price of Goods and Services Act, bottled palm oil remains subject to regulatory oversight,” he said. Authorities have asked businesses not to raise prices without justification and have urged consumers to remain calm.

The government maintains that Thailand holds approximately 350,000 tonnes of crude palm oil reserves, which is sufficient to meet domestic demand. Additional seasonal output is expected between April and July, which will help supply both household consumption and energy requirements.

Following consultations with nine major consumer goods producers, including Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Nestlé and other leading companies, the Commerce Ministry reported that inventories remain adequate and manufacturers have agreed to hold prices steady until at least April.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

However, ongoing instability in the Middle East could disrupt supply chains, particularly for plastic packaging materials, potentially affecting prices in the months ahead. To ease cost pressures, the government is coordinating with state agencies to secure raw materials such as plastic resin and solvents, including negotiations with South Korea to relax export restrictions.

The government is also considering stricter controls on six essential product categories, including detergents, personal care items and sanitary products, which would require prior approval before any price increases could be implemented.

Enforcement Measures

Enforcement measures are being strengthened across the country. Mr Wittayakorn said authorities would intensify inspections to prevent profiteering, ensure accurate product quantities, and monitor stock levels to deter hoarding. Officials are working to balance the need for market stability with the realities of rising global energy costs and supply chain disruptions.

Thailand Allows 24-Hour Fuel Deliveries to Ease Nationwide Shortages

For consumers and businesses alike, the coming weeks will determine whether these measures can successfully hold prices steady or whether the pressure from rising fuel costs will ultimately be passed on to household budgets across Thailand.

Carson Daly shuts down The Voice exit rumors with …

Carson Daly has officially put an end to speculation about his future on The Voice, assuring fans that he is not leaving the long-running singing competition after 15 years. Rumors about Daly’s departure began circulating after NBC announced a new version of the hit series, The Voice: Celebrity. The upcoming spin-off will feature actress and television personality Keke Palmer as host, leading many viewers to believe Daly was stepping away from the franchise. However, the veteran TV host quickly addressed the reports through a message shared on Instagram.  “Many today have asked if I am leaving The Voice. Nope,” Daly wrote, making it clear that he has no plans to exit the original show. The 53-year-old television personality explained that NBC is simply experimenting with two different formats. The traditional version of The Voice will continue to air during the fall, while the celebrity edition is scheduled for the spring. “We are gonna try out these two formats this fall/spring and see how it goes. Hopefully, this clears up any confusion,” Daly added in his post.  Daly also praised Keke Palmer, saying she is the perfect choice to host the celebrity spin-off. While Palmer will front the new series, Daly will continue hosting the original The Voice, a role he has held since the show’s debut in 2011. In addition, he will remain involved behind the scenes as a producer for the celebrity version.  The announcement comes as NBC looks to refresh the franchise with a new concept featuring celebrity contestants instead of aspiring singers. The celebrity edition will include actors, musicians, athletes, comedians, influencers, and other well-known personalities competing for the title, while the classic version will continue showcasing undiscovered vocal talent.  Fans were relieved after Daly’s clarification, with many taking to social media to celebrate the news. Having hosted the show for more than 30 seasons, Daly has become one of its most recognizable faces, known for guiding contestants through emotional moments and keeping the competition running smoothly. His reassurance also ends days of online speculation that suggested he was stepping away because of scheduling demands. Instead, Daly confirmed that he remains committed to the original series and is excited to see how the two-format approach performs with audiences.  For now, viewers can expect to see Carson Daly exactly where they have for the past 15 years—hosting The Voice while helping the franchise enter an exciting new chapter with its upcoming celebrity spin-off.

Five killed in Michigan shooting as suspect found …

MICHIGAN: Five people were killed in a shooting in northern Michigan on Friday, while a suspected gunman was later found dead after police launched a manhunt, authorities said. Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched at around 11:40am to a home in Missaukee County following reports of gunfire. Officers arriving at the scene discovered three people dead and a fourth victim seriously wounded. The injured person was taken to hospital and remained in critical condition, police said. Investigators identified the suspected shooter as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, who allegedly fled the area before officers arrived. His disappearance triggered an extensive search across the surrounding area as law enforcement teams worked to locate him. During the manhunt, investigators discovered another deceased victim at a second residence, bringing the reported death toll to five. Police later found Hickman’s vehicle near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake. When officers searched the area, they found Hickman and another person dead, according to the state police statement. Authorities have not yet provided details about how Hickman or the other person died, and the circumstances surrounding the additional death remain under investigation. “This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved,” Lieutenant Ashley Miller said in a statement cited by police. Police have withheld the names, ages and genders of the victims while officials work to notify their next of kin. The incident has left the northern Michigan community shaken as investigators continue examining the shooting, the second residence and the circumstances that led to the suspect’s death. Authorities are expected to release further information as the investigation progresses.

‘Rigging mastermind cries foul’: Maryam’s sh…

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has strongly criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over its allegations of rigging in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. Maryam responded to criticism from PPP leaders in a social media post on Wednesday. She accused the PPP of being behind what she described as “subtle rigging” and questioned its decision to complain about electoral irregularities. “The mastermind of subtle rigging is crying foul over rigging,” Maryam said in her post. She then added a sarcastic question about when doomsday would arrive. Her remarks came after PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Hassan Murtaza accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of manipulating the AJK election process. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Murtaza alleged that electoral rules had been repeatedly violated during the polls. He also criticised the role of the Election Commission. He claimed that the commission had acted like an election agent instead of performing its constitutional responsibilities. Murtaza accused the PML-N of setting a new example of electoral rigging. He said his party had been treated unfairly during the elections. The PPP leader also criticised the political activities of the PML-N leadership in AJK. Without directly naming Maryam Nawaz, Murtaza referred to her father, Nawaz Sharif. He said Sharif had gone to Kashmir and expressed a desire to become prime minister. Murtaza argued that if the PML-N leadership was now seeking the AJK premiership, it was only possible because of the PPP’s political role. He also defended Nawaz Sharif and said the PPP respected the former prime minister. Murtaza claimed that the PML-N had itself reduced Sharif’s political standing by offering him a position as chairman of an institution in Lahore while he was seeking the AJK premiership. The PPP leader then shifted his criticism to Punjab’s governance and public services. He claimed that thousands of acres of farmland between Shahdara and Muridke had been inundated. According to Murtaza, water had reached several feet in some agricultural areas. He said the damage was not caused by a major flood. Instead, he blamed a breach in a drain embankment. Murtaza also criticised the Punjab government’s claims about Lahore’s development. He argued that the city’s infrastructure remained vulnerable to heavy rainfall. He said several roads turned into what he described as drainage channels after only a few hours of rain. The PPP leader blamed government decisions for creating difficulties for citizens. He also criticised the import of one million metric tonnes of wheat. Murtaza claimed that the imported wheat was worth around Rs1 trillion. He questioned the government’s economic decisions and argued that citizens deserved better public services. He said taxes collected from the public should be used to provide essential facilities. He also called on the government to fulfil its responsibility toward citizens. The political dispute comes amid growing tensions between the PPP and PML-N over the AJK elections. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has also alleged irregularities in the first phase of the AJK elections. The PML-N, however, has rejected allegations of rigging and defended the election results. Maryam Nawaz has previously urged political opponents to accept defeat rather than make allegations of electoral manipulation

Mandy Moore reveals if she wants to expand her fam…

Mandy Moore has officially answered the question of whether she and her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, plan to expand their family. The This Is Us star, 42, already shares three children with Goldsmith: sons August “Gus,” 5, and Oscar “Ozzie,” 3, and daughter Louise “Lou,” who is 23 months old. In a recent interview, Moore made it clear that their family of five is now complete. (Us) “We are absolutely done and so grateful for our family,” Moore said, explaining that she and Goldsmith are enjoying this stage of parenthood and trying to savor the small moments. Moore admitted that seeing pregnancy announcements on social media can still bring up complicated feelings. She joked that her Instagram feed now seems filled with pregnant people, which makes her realize that pregnancy will not be part of her future again. At the same time, she said she is simply too tired to imagine starting over with another baby. After having three children in three and a half years, Moore appears ready to embrace a new chapter rather than return to the newborn stage. For the actress, there is also something bittersweet about watching her youngest child, Lou, grow up. She recently reflected on reaching milestones that signal the end of the baby years, including moving away from diapers, bottles and a crib. Moore described the transition as exciting but emotional. Her family is entering what she called “uncharted territory,” as the children become more independent and develop their own personalities. (E! Online) The actress has also been candid about the physical and emotional impact of having three children so close together. Earlier this year, she shared an honest look at her postpartum body, acknowledging the changes that came after three pregnancies in just three and a half years. (People.com) Moore previously revealed that she had undergone an unsuccessful round of IVF before unexpectedly becoming pregnant naturally with Lou. She had considered IVF partly because she wanted the possibility of creating more space between pregnancies as she got older. (The Express Tribune) Now, however, Moore appears confident that she and Goldsmith have reached the right place for their family. Rather than focusing on having another baby, the actress is choosing to appreciate the children she already has. With Gus, Ozzie and Lou growing quickly, Moore is embracing the next stage of motherhood with gratitude. For Moore and Goldsmith, the baby chapter may be closing—but their family story is continuing to grow in new ways.
