HSA controversy: representation before president a…

Islamabad: A representation submitted before the President of Pakistan has requested an early decision in a workplace harassment case involving Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan and Dr. Ayesha Khan, after the applicant claimed the matter remained pending despite the completion of hearings.

The application was addressed to the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan through the Secretary to the President, seeking directions for an early decision on Representation No. 18/WO/2026 pending before the Consultant to the President.

According to the application, the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace (FOSPAH) issued an order on 13 February 2026, dismissing Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan’s complaint and ordering his removal from service. The applicant later filed a representation under Section 9 of the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2010.

The representation states that both parties appeared before the Consultant to the President and presented their arguments. After hearing the matter, the Consultant reserved the decision on 12 May 2026, but according to the application, the final decision has not yet been announced.

The applicant argued that unnecessary delay in deciding the representation is increasing difficulties and hardship, requesting that the matter be decided without further delay according to legal principles of timely justice.

The case relates to proceedings under the workplace harassment law involving Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan and Dr. Ayesha Khan. The President Secretariat had earlier issued hearing notices regarding the representation against the FOSPAH order dated 13 February 2026 in Complaint No. FOH HQR H/0341/2025.

The President Secretariat scheduled hearings before Mr. Justice (Retired) Irfan Qadir, Consultant Legal Affairs to the President, first on 2 April 2026 and later refixed the matter for 12 May 2026. The notices stated that the matter would be decided on the basis of available record.

The dispute has attracted attention because the representation challenges a previous order passed by FOSPAH, while the final decision on the pending matter remains awaited.

The available record shows that filing a representation does not itself establish innocence or final relief. The matter remains subject to examination under the applicable legal process, and the final outcome depends on the decision of the competent authority.

Ukrainian drone strike on Nizhnekamsk oil refinery kills 13 and injures dozens

A devastating Ukrainian drone attack on the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region has killed at least 13 people, including a child and several foreign nationals, and left dozens injured. The strike targeted Tatneft’s TANECO oil refinery, located approximately 1,200 kilometres east of the Ukrainian border, marking one of the heaviest civilian death tolls inside Russian territory in months. Footage verified on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising over the refinery complex, which processed 17 million metric tonnes of crude oil in 2024. Ukrainian military officials confirmed targeting the facility as part of an ongoing strategy to dismantle key Russian fuel infrastructure and reduce the Kremlin’s economic capability to sustain its war effort. Russian authorities launched a formal criminal investigation into the incident, qualifying the strike as a terrorist attack. Officials stated that residential structures were hit in addition to industrial sites, with nine of the fatal casualties occurring inside a local worker hostel. Diplomatic officials confirmed that the dead included seven citizens of Uzbekistan and one national from Tajikistan. The attack reflects Kyiv’s intensified campaign of long-range strikes targeting major fuel and energy hubs deep within Russia, which has created localized supply disruptions across several Russian regions. Local authorities in Tatarstan have declared an official period of mourning following the incident.

Neymar answers critics with poker celebration on Santos return

Brazilian star Neymar marked his long-awaited return to action for Santos by scoring twice and responding to recent criticism with a playful goal celebration inspired by poker. The veteran forward helped Santos come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against bottom-placed Chapecoense in Brazil’s Serie A on Saturday. The 34-year-old made his first appearance for Santos after spending two-and-a-half months on the sidelines. His return came at a crucial stage of the season, with Santos battling to avoid relegation from Brazil’s top flight. Although the draw earned the club an important point, Santos remain in danger, sitting just one point above the relegation zone. Neymar had come under renewed criticism earlier in the week after taking part in a poker tournament while his Santos teammates were playing a Copa Sudamericana match in Venezuela. His decision sparked debate among fans and pundits, with many questioning his priorities during his injury lay-off. The Brazilian forward appeared to respond to those comments after opening the scoring. Following his first goal, Neymar celebrated by pretending to deal playing cards, an apparent reference to the poker tournament that had attracted criticism. Moments later, he added another light-hearted celebration by using the corner flag to imitate a golf swing, further acknowledging the public scrutiny surrounding his off-field activities. Despite the criticism, Neymar delivered when Santos needed him most. His two goals helped the struggling side recover from a difficult position and earn a valuable draw. While the result did not move Santos away from the relegation battle, it provided encouragement as the club fights to remain in Brazil’s top division. The match also marked Neymar’s first appearance since Brazil’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign. The country’s all-time leading goalscorer recently announced the end of his international career after Brazil were eliminated by Norway in the Round of 16, bringing an end to one of the most successful international careers in the nation’s history. Having stepped away from international football, Neymar is now expected to focus entirely on helping Santos improve their domestic fortunes. His experience and leadership will be vital as the club attempts to avoid relegation during the remainder of the season. Fans welcomed Neymar’s return, with many praising his immediate impact despite the recent controversy. His performance demonstrated that he remains capable of making the difference on the pitch, even as discussions about his lifestyle continue off it. While his poker-themed celebration is likely to generate further debate, Neymar made one thing clear through his display against Chapecoense: he intends to answer his critics with performances rather than words. With Santos still facing a difficult fight for survival, the club will hope their star forward can maintain his fitness and continue producing decisive performances in the weeks ahead.

Fake Iranian statements allegedly used to push nuc…

TEL AVIV: An Israeli journalist has alleged that a fabricated statement attributed to an Iranian official was circulated as part of an effort to portray Tehran as actively seeking to develop nuclear weapons. According to Israeli journalist Ronen Bergman, a false statement was allegedly created and attributed to Ahmad Vahidi, a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The fabricated remarks purportedly claimed that Iran was developing nuclear weapons. Bergman said the alleged fake statement was initially circulated through the social media account of a Hindu extremist in India before being amplified by a number of prominent Israeli and US-linked accounts and figures. He alleged that the material was subsequently shared by accounts associated with Israel’s Mossad, an Israeli television channel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the US ambassador to the United Nations. The claims have raised questions about the role of disinformation in the highly sensitive debate surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, particularly amid continuing tensions between Tehran and Israel. The allegation is significant because claims about Iran’s nuclear ambitions have repeatedly featured in political and security debates in the region. Any fabricated statement presented as an authentic admission could potentially influence public opinion and international perceptions. However, the reported allegations concern the authenticity and circulation of the statement rather than independently establishing the broader question of Iran’s nuclear intentions. The development highlights how rapidly unverified material can spread across social media and be amplified by influential accounts, especially during periods of heightened geopolitical tension. The claims attributed to Bergman are likely to fuel further debate over information warfare, source verification and the use of alleged intelligence-related material in the ongoing Iran-Israel confrontation.

Ex-US health official Anthony Fauci invokes Fifth Amendment in volatile Senate hearing

Former top US public health official Dr Anthony Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a tense Senate committee hearing on Wednesday, refusing to answer questions regarding the origins of COVID-19 and early federal pandemic responses. The hours-long session before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee degenerated into a fierce clash between the retired scientist and Republican lawmakers. Fauci, 85, who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for nearly four decades, declined to answer more than 100 questions on the advice of his legal team. In a statement before asserting his constitutional right, Fauci accused committee chairman Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) of pursuing an “unhinged obsession” with sending him to prison. Fauci stated that answering questions under oath was a deliberate attempt to trap him into potential perjury charges. Paul and GOP members pressed Fauci on whether federal funding supported dangerous “gain-of-function” research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, and cited over 1,000 pages of newly leaked personal diary entries that lawmakers argue contradict his past public statements. Despite a preemptive presidential pardon issued by Joe Biden before leaving office, legal experts noted that testifying under oath could still leave Fauci exposed to potential perjury prosecutions if lawmakers alleged inconsistent statements. Enraged by the repeated refusals, Senator Paul announced that the committee will vote next week on holding Fauci in contempt of Congress, which could prompt a referral for criminal prosecution.

Lucy Davis reveals stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis publicly

Lucy Davis, best known for her role as Dawn Tinsley in the original British version of The Office, has revealed that she has been living with stage 4 breast cancer. The actress shared the deeply personal news on Tuesday, August 11, explaining that she had kept her diagnosis private for around a year and a half. Davis said she now felt ready to speak publicly about her condition and use her experience to encourage others to take changes in their bodies seriously. According to Davis, the cancer has spread to several parts of her body, including her spine, right hip and ribs. She described the illness as incurable and said that it had progressed to a point where chemotherapy was no longer an option. Reflecting on how she first discovered the cancer, Davis explained that she initially noticed what felt like a very small hard area rather than an obvious lump. Because the change was so subtle, she nearly decided not to have it examined. Her experience led her to issue an important message to her followers, urging them not to dismiss unusual changes or symptoms. She encouraged people to have anything concerning checked by a medical professional, even if it appears minor. Despite her diagnosis, Davis said she is not frightened about what lies ahead and has found a sense of peace with her situation. She also spoke about the emotional impact her illness has had on her loved ones, acknowledging that the experience may be more difficult for her family than it is for her. Davis also made it clear that she intends to continue working for as long as she is able. She said she remains perfectly capable of working and described acting as one of the greatest joys of her life. The actress rose to fame through The Office, the acclaimed British mockumentary created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. She portrayed Dawn Tinsley, the witty and kind-hearted receptionist who became romantically involved with Tim Canterbury, played by Martin Freeman. The series originally ran from 2001 to 2003 and recently marked its 25th anniversary. Following her success on The Office, Davis built an impressive career across television and film. She appeared in the 2004 comedy-horror movie Shaun of the Dead, where she played Dianne. She later took on the role of Etta Candy in the 2017 superhero film Wonder Woman. Davis also became widely recognized by a new generation of viewers for portraying Hilda Spellman in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. More recently, she appeared as Eva in the Disney Channel action-comedy series The Villains of Valley View. While Davis’s diagnosis has brought a deeply personal chapter of her life into the public eye, her decision to continue pursuing her career reflects the important role acting continues to play in her life. Her message about checking unusual changes also serves as a reminder that early medical attention can be important when something does not feel right.
