Sabalenka survives six match points to reach Cincinnati round 3

CINCINNATI: World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka survived a tense challenge from Australia’s Talia Gibson on Sunday, needing six match points to secure a straight-sets victory and book her place in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters.

Sabalenka eventually prevailed 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in just under two hours on a windswept Grandstand Court, but the second set turned into a nerve-testing battle.

The Belarusian appeared close to victory when she created five match points in the 12th game. Gibson, however, refused to surrender, saving all five before forcing the set into a tiebreak.

Sabalenka kept her composure when it mattered most, dominating the tiebreak before sealing the match with a final winner.

“I’m super tired; this is crazy weather,” Sabalenka said after the contest, praising Gibson for becoming more aggressive and putting greater pressure on her serve.

The victory keeps Sabalenka’s bid for another deep Cincinnati run alive. She won the tournament in 2024 and is hoping to build momentum ahead of the US Open, where she will be chasing her first Grand Slam title of the 2026 season.

Sabalenka has already captured three titles this year, although her most recent triumph came in Miami in March.

Meanwhile, Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina advanced comfortably with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Taylor Townsend. The world No. 2 arrived in Cincinnati after finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Toronto.

French Open champion Mirra Andreeva produced an even more emphatic performance, crushing Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-0 while saving all seven break points she faced.

Defending champion Swiatek also moved forward, defeating Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-0.

American fourth seed Coco Gauff battled back from a slow start to defeat Liudmila Samsonova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, winning the final five games.

The day ended on a disappointing note for American Ben Shelton, however, as the world No. 6 was eliminated by Portugal’s Jaime Faria.

Trump and Republicans face tough test as US midterm elections draw closer

With just 100 days remaining before Americans head to the polls for the midterm elections, President Donald Trump and the Republican Party are preparing for what could become one of the biggest political challenges of his presidency. While Trump himself will not be on the ballot on November 3, the outcome of the elections is expected to shape the final years of his administration. Recent opinion surveys suggest Democrats are well positioned to regain control of the House of Representatives, while Republicans are also facing an increasingly competitive fight to maintain their majority in the Senate. A Democratic victory in the House would dramatically shift the balance of power in Washington. It would allow the party to lead key congressional committees and launch investigations into the Trump administration through subpoena powers. Such authority could open the door to fresh inquiries into government decisions and even fuel discussions about another attempt to impeach the president. Republicans currently hold only a slim majority in the House, making it easier for Democrats to take control if just a small number of seats change hands. Political analysts say several national issues are making the election environment more difficult for Republicans. Rising living costs remain one of the biggest concerns among voters. Fuel prices have climbed above four dollars per gallon following disruptions in global energy markets linked to the conflict with Iran. Inflation has remained stubbornly high while interest rates continue to place pressure on households and businesses. Surveys also indicate that voters are increasingly trusting Democrats over Republicans on issues such as inflation, healthcare and even immigration, which has traditionally been considered one of the Republican Party’s strongest campaign issues. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries recently criticized the Trump administration’s economic record and announced a campaign focused on lowering the cost of groceries, gasoline, housing and medical care. Republicans, however, argue that voters will have a clear choice between what they describe as practical conservative policies and a Democratic Party they say has moved further to the left. Their campaign is expected to emphasize border security, tax reductions and public safety while attempting to link Democratic candidates with progressive policies that they believe are unpopular among moderate voters. At the same time, Republicans are pursuing strategies that could improve their chances despite difficult polling numbers. One major effort has involved redrawing congressional district boundaries. Both major parties have participated in redistricting, but experts believe Republicans may benefit more from the latest changes. Some projections suggest the new electoral maps could provide Republicans with an advantage of several House seats, which may prove crucial in what is expected to be another closely contested election. Political scientist Sarah Binder of George Washington University said the new district maps have significantly reduced the number of truly competitive House races, limiting the opportunities available to Democratic candidates in some areas. Republicans also enter the final months of campaigning with a financial edge. Party organizations and allied groups have reportedly raised tens of millions of dollars more than their Democratic rivals, giving them greater resources to advertise, organize campaigns and support candidates across the country. The battle for the Senate is expected to be just as important. Republicans currently control the chamber with a 53 to 47 majority. Democrats need to gain four seats to take control, although current forecasts suggest Republicans remain slight favorites to keep the Senate. Some projections indicate the chamber could end in a 50 to 50 split, allowing Vice President JD Vance to cast deciding votes whenever necessary. For President Trump, losing the House while keeping the Senate would still create major obstacles for the remainder of his term. His legislative agenda would likely face repeated roadblocks, while Democratic lawmakers could use committee hearings to closely examine issues including the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict, government ethics and election related policies. Political analyst Chuck Todd said Republicans have seen their advantage in the Senate narrow considerably over recent months. He also predicted Democrats could gain between 10 and 25 seats in the House if current political trends continue. Recent polling from Economist and YouGov shows Trump’s approval rating remains low, with only 36 percent of Americans approving of his performance as president. Analysts note that historically, presidents with approval ratings below 45 percent almost always see their party lose seats during midterm elections. Whether Republicans can limit those losses or face a much larger defeat will become clear when Americans cast their votes in November.

Shahood Alvi sparks controversy with candid marriage remarks

Pakistani television actor and director Shahood Alvi has once again found himself at the centre of social media discussions following his candid remarks about marriage, relationships and the role of women in maintaining a healthy relationship. Shahood began his showbiz career at Pakistan Television as a boom operator alongside his maternal uncle, Iqbal Ansari. He later moved into acting and gradually established himself as a recognised performer through his work in several popular television dramas. The actor is married to Saima Shahood, and the couple has three daughters, Areeba, Sajal and Arija, all of whom are now married. Shahood frequently appears on morning shows, particularly programmes that feature discussions about marriage, relationships and family life. During a recent television appearance alongside actresses Laila Zuberi and Fariha Awan, Shahood shared his views on why some husbands may lose interest in their wives. His comments, however, quickly attracted attention and divided opinions online. Discussing the possible reasons behind a decline in a husband’s interest, Shahood suggested that women who spend most of their time at home may sometimes carry the smell of ingredients such as ginger and garlic from cooking. He contrasted this with men working in offices, where they may encounter women wearing perfumes. He questioned why a husband would remain attracted if his wife smelled of cooking ingredients, while women in offices might be dressed up and wearing fragrance. The actor also made another controversial remark when the discussion turned towards seeking professional help for marital problems. When Fariha Awan suggested therapy as an option for couples facing difficulties, Shahood jokingly questioned what would happen if a therapist ran away with someone’s wife. He repeated the warning while referring to psychiatrists, describing it as a humorous concern. Shahood further said that spending excessive amounts of time on a mobile phone could be a negative sign in a marriage. He suggested that women should also make an effort to regain their husbands’ attention by preparing food they enjoy and getting ready before their husbands return home. Laila Zuberi agreed that making an effort to look presentable for one’s spouse has traditionally been viewed positively. Recalling her childhood, she said she remembered her mother applying lipstick before her father returned home. Fariha Awan also supported the idea that women could make additional efforts to present themselves well before their husbands came home. Shahood went on to discuss his own marriage, saying he had tried to teach his wife several practical tasks, including paying bills, shopping for groceries and driving. However, he said jokingly that she never learned these skills and referred to her humorously as a “stubborn one.” He also recalled advice from actress Bushra Ansari, who had discouraged his wife from learning how to drive. According to Shahood, Bushra believed that once housewives learned to drive, their responsibilities could increase because they might then be expected to take children to school and bring them back. Following the television appearance, Shahood’s comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some users criticised his remarks as outdated or insensitive, others viewed them as part of the informal and humorous nature of morning-show conversations. Despite the debate, Shahood’s comments have once again placed discussions surrounding marriage, expectations from spouses and gender roles in the spotlight.

Quaid’s Mazar chandelier restoration plan revive…

The restoration of the historic chandelier at Mazar-e-Quaid and measures to improve facilities for visitors were discussed at a meeting of the Quaid-e-Azam Mazar Management Board on Thursday. Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture and board chairman Aurangzeb Khan Khichi chaired the 102nd meeting, where officials reviewed several proposals concerning the preservation and management of the national monument. The meeting examined a proposal to restore the historic chandelier and subsequently shift it to the National Museum. Officials also discussed plans to introduce a shuttle service at Bagh-e-Quaid to provide visitors with easier access to the mausoleum. Khichi directed the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) to approach the restoration project as a matter of national heritage and service rather than treating it purely as a commercial undertaking. He said the historic chandelier had been removed from its original position in 2016. Its restoration has since faced repeated delays because of financial and administrative issues associated with the proposed project. The minister stressed the importance of preserving historical artefacts associated with the country’s founder and called for efforts to ensure that the restoration work moved forward without further unnecessary delays. The meeting also reviewed ways to improve the experience of people visiting Bagh-e-Quaid and the mausoleum. The proposed shuttle service is aimed at making transportation within the premises more convenient, particularly for visitors who may face difficulties covering the distance on foot. Khichi also acknowledged the cooperation extended by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to the Quaid-e-Azam Mazar Management Board. He said the provincial government’s support had contributed to the maintenance of Mazar-e-Quaid and helped the board manage its affairs in Karachi. The discussions underscored the need to protect the country’s historic heritage while upgrading facilities at one of Pakistan’s most important national landmarks.

Counter-terror operations in Balochistan neutralize 12 militants

Security forces in Pakistan have eliminated 12 high-risk terrorists during two separate operations across the southwestern province of Balochistan. According to official statements issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, the targeted anti-terror engagements took place in the districts of Washuk and Mastung as part of an intensified campaign against extremist elements operating within the region. The military reported that these synchronized Intelligence-Based Operations (IBOs) were initiated following precise tracking and surveillance of insurgent networks. The operations represent a significant operational success for law enforcement and defense personnel working to dismantle armed groups attempting to compromise regional stability. Key Highlights of the Counter-Terror Operations District Washuk: Initial tracking detected hostile movement in the area, leading to a swift operational response that resulted in six terrorists being neutralized. District Mastung: A subsequent targeted raid triggered an intense exchange of gunfire, during which six additional terrorists were eliminated and a major militant hideout was completely dismantled Total Impact: 12 terrorists killed, operational infrastructure destroyed, and significant cache of weapons and logistics seized. Breakdown of the Intelligence-Based Raids The first phase of the counter-terrorism effort unfolded in Washuk district, where security agencies identified suspicious tactical movements by a group of armed insurgents. Acting on real-time intelligence, military units deployed swiftly to intercept the suspects. Upon confronting the militants, a heavy firefight ensued, ending with the death of six terrorists before they could execute planned sabotage activities in the district. Shortly thereafter, a second high-stakes operation was executed in the Mastung district. Intelligence agencies pinpointed an active sanctuary utilized by militants as a staging ground for planning attacks against civilians and security personnel. As forces surrounded the hideout, the cornered insurgents opened fire in a desperate attempt to break through the security perimeter. The security forces responded with decisive tactical force, eliminating six militants on the spot and neutralizing the immediate threat. Following the gun battle, search teams thoroughly cleared the facility, recovering military-grade weaponry, ammunition, and explosives, while destroying the infrastructure used to harbor illegal insurgents. Strategic Significance and Broader Context The ISPR emphasized that these successful engagements reflect the unwavering commitment of the armed forces to cleanse the country of foreign-funded terrorism. Military officials reaffirmed that anti-terror operations will persist relentlessly until all hostile networks, their safe havens, and their local facilitators are completely eradicated across Pakistan.   Authorities have urged local communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as comprehensive intelligence gathering and mop-up activities continue throughout the region.
