Salman Rushdie attacker convicted on US federal terrorism charges

The man who stabbed renowned author Salman Rushdie during a public event in 2022 has been found guilty on multiple federal terrorism charges in the United States. The verdict marks another major legal milestone in a case that drew worldwide attention because of the long standing threats against the celebrated novelist.

A federal jury in Buffalo, New York, convicted 28 year old Hadi Matar after only a few hours of deliberation. Prosecutors argued that the attack was motivated by decades old calls for Rushdie’s death following the publication of his controversial novel The Satanic Verses. Matar was found guilty of attempting to provide material support to Hezbollah, engaging in terrorism across national borders, and providing support to terrorists.

Matar is already serving a 25 year prison sentence after being convicted in a New York state court for attempted murder. Following the federal conviction, he now faces the possibility of life imprisonment when he is sentenced in November.

The federal trial began last week and included testimony from Rushdie himself. The 79 year old author described the attack that left him with life changing injuries. The defence did not call Matar or any other witnesses to testify during the proceedings.

Rushdie has lived under threat since the publication of The Satanic Verses in 1988. The novel sparked widespread controversy in parts of the Muslim world, leading Iran’s then Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to issue a religious decree in 1989 calling for the author’s death. The fatwa also targeted people involved in publishing the book and led to violent attacks over the following years, including the killing of Japanese translator Hitoshi Igarashi in 1991.

Although the Iranian government later distanced itself from the fatwa, US prosecutors said it continued to receive support from Hezbollah leaders and was reaffirmed by Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Matar spent more than a year studying the fatwa before carrying out the attack. They argued that he deliberately planned the assault to carry out the religious decree against Rushdie.

The attack took place on August 12, 2022, while Rushdie was preparing to speak at the Chautauqua Institution, an educational and cultural centre in New York state. Matar rushed onto the stage and repeatedly stabbed the author before audience members intervened and restrained him until police arrived.

Rushdie suffered multiple stab wounds to his head, neck, chest, and hand. The injuries permanently blinded him in one eye and caused severe damage to several internal organs. Another man on stage was also injured during the incident.

Born in the United States and holding Lebanese citizenship, Matar had been living in New Jersey before the attack. His conviction in state court earlier resulted in a 25 year prison sentence, but the federal terrorism charges carry significantly harsher penalties.

Rushdie, who was born in India and later became a British and American citizen, spent many years under police protection after the fatwa was issued. He lived largely in hiding throughout the 1990s before gradually returning to public life and eventually settling in New York City.

The latest verdict closes another chapter in one of the most widely followed literary and terrorism related cases in recent history. It also reinforces the long lasting impact of threats that began nearly four decades ago over a work of fiction and continued to influence events many years later.

Akshay Kumar goes full villain, says ‘Haiwaan’ role has no grey shades

Akshay Kumar is stepping into unfamiliar territory with his upcoming thriller “Haiwaan” taking on a fully negative character for the first time. The role marks a clear departure from his usual on-screen image. The actor recently opened up about his first look and the nature of his character in the film. He made clear there is nothing sympathetic or conflicted about the role he is playing. Kumar explained that his character matches the film’s title exactly, with absolutely no shades of grey involved. He described the role as being completely and unapologetically evil from start to finish. He admitted that taking on such a character felt like an entirely new experience for him. Kumar said he had always wanted to play a psychopath on screen, something he had not attempted in his career so far. He also pointed out that his recent projects have spanned a wide range of genres. From comedy and horror to action and drama, Kumar said he has been consciously exploring different creative directions. Director Priyadarshan also spoke about how Kumar’s distinctive look for the film came together. He revealed that the idea for the beanie actually originated on the sets of a completely different project. Priyadarshan explained that he spotted Kumar casually wearing the beanie during the shoot of “Bhooth Bangla” and instantly loved the look. That casual moment ended up shaping the actor’s final appearance for “Haiwaan.” The director also shared that he had not expected Kumar to accept the role when he first narrated the story. He assumed the actor might turn it down, given how different it was from his usual choices. To his surprise, Kumar showed genuine interest right away. The film also features Saif Ali Khan, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar in key roles alongside Kumar. Together, the cast brings a mix of star power to what’s shaping up to be a darker, more intense project. “Haiwaan” is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on September 11. With Kumar stepping into unfamiliar villain territory, the film is already generating curiosity ahead of its release.

Gulf nations back Omani plan for voluntary transit payments to resolve Hormuz maritime crisis

Gulf Cooperation Council member states have formally endorsed a diplomatic initiative proposed by Oman to introduce voluntary service fees for commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, seeking to restore global energy shipments disrupted by the broader conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The framework, modeled after the cooperative navigation safety mechanism used in Asia’s Malacca Strait, allows shipowners to make optional financial contributions toward environmental protection, search-and-rescue services, and navigational maintenance rather than paying mandatory tolls. Designed as a compromise between Tehran’s demand for administrative authority over shipping lanes and Washington’s insistence on unimpeded international transit, the Omani proposal explicitly prevents Iran from exercising exclusive operational control over the waterway while offering a structured path toward reopening commercial transit routes. The diplomatic breakthrough coincides with a temporary lull in direct aerial bombardments after US President Donald Trump called off a two-week bombing campaign following advice from military commanders. Despite the pause in direct strikes between Washington and Tehran, regional tensions remain elevated due to ongoing proxy drone activity across Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, alongside continued US naval enforcement actions against non-compliant commercial vessels. While market reactions to the suspension of airstrikes sent global crude prices down sharply, formal resolution remains subject to upcoming diplomatic negotiations in Washington and the broader implementation of the bilateral framework agreement.

Tom Holland and Zendaya celebrate exclusive post-wedding event

Hollywood stars Zendaya and Tom Holland have reportedly celebrated their marriage once again with an intimate wedding ceremony in England, months after quietly tying the knot earlier this year. The couple, who have remained one of the entertainment industry’s most private pairs, reportedly took a break from their demanding work schedules and international press commitments to mark the special occasion with a close circle of family members and friends. The private celebration was held at the luxurious Beaverbrook Hotel in Surrey, located near Kingston-upon-Thames in southwest London, an area closely connected to Holland’s upbringing. The exclusive venue, known for its historic charm and scenic surroundings, was reserved exclusively for the couple and their guests for the special event. The lavish Victorian estate spans approximately 370 acres and has welcomed numerous high-profile visitors over the years. Its rich history and secluded location made it an ideal setting for the couple’s intimate celebration away from the public eye. To maintain complete privacy, strict security measures were reportedly put in place throughout the event. Guests and staff members were required to follow a no-phone policy, ensuring that no photographs or videos from the ceremony were shared publicly. The precaution reflected the couple’s long-standing commitment to keeping their personal lives out of the spotlight. According to reports, the wedding celebration was designed to remain entirely confidential, with organizers taking significant steps to prevent any details from leaking before or after the event. The ceremony allowed the newlyweds to celebrate their relationship in a relaxed and private atmosphere surrounded by their closest loved ones. Zendaya and Holland’s romance began after the two met while filming Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016. Although speculation about their relationship circulated for years, they largely kept their romance private and rarely discussed it publicly. Their relationship continued to grow over the years, and the pair reportedly became engaged in 2024. Fans have closely followed their journey ever since, with the couple frequently earning praise for balancing their successful careers while maintaining a low-profile personal life. Earlier this year, speculation about their marriage intensified after Zendaya’s longtime stylist, Law Roach, publicly indicated that the pair had already exchanged vows. While neither Zendaya nor Holland has officially shared details of their wedding, reports of the private ceremony in England have further fueled excitement among fans around the world. Despite their global fame, the couple continue to prioritize privacy, choosing intimate celebrations over highly publicized events as they begin the next chapter of their life together.
