Saudi Crown Prince urges Trump to avoid escalation…

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has spoken by phone with US President Donald Trump, reportedly expressing concern over Washington’s plans for major military strikes against Iran.

According to international media reports, the Saudi crown prince urged the US president to take steps to reduce tensions in the region and avoid further military action against Iran. The call comes amid growing fears that an escalation between Washington and Tehran could destabilize the wider Middle East and threaten regional security.

During the conversation, Mohammed bin Salman reportedly emphasized the importance of pursuing diplomatic channels and finding ways to de-escalate the situation. Saudi Arabia has maintained close ties with the United States while also seeking to avoid a broader regional conflict that could affect the security and stability of Gulf countries.

Reports indicate that Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, and Pakistan are also encouraging Washington to reduce tensions and seek a diplomatic solution. The countries have reportedly expressed concerns that any major escalation could have serious consequences for the region and potentially disrupt trade, energy supplies, and maritime routes.

Meanwhile, diplomatic contacts appear to be continuing on multiple fronts. Qatari mediators have reportedly been in communication with Iran’s foreign minister, US special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Omani officials as efforts to prevent further escalation gather momentum.

The diplomatic activity comes as concerns remain high over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes. A significant portion of global oil shipments passes through the waterway, making any disruption a major concern for international energy markets.

Separately, a US-based website has claimed that negotiators have made some progress toward reaching an agreement aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, details of the reported progress remain unclear, and there has been no confirmed announcement of a final agreement from the parties involved.

The latest diplomatic efforts suggest that regional and international actors are increasingly pushing for negotiations to prevent the situation from developing into a wider conflict. Any breakthrough in talks could help ease tensions and reduce the risk of further military confrontation in the region.

Israeli forces detain 48 Palestinians in West Bank raids

Israeli forces detained at least 48 Palestinians during raids across the occupied West Bank on Saturday, while eight Palestinians were reportedly injured in a separate attack, according to Palestinian sources and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society. More than 40 young Palestinian men were detained during an ongoing military operation in the town of Tell, west of Nablus, Palestinian media reported. Israeli troops reportedly took control of a residential building in the town and used it as a temporary interrogation facility. Raids and searches of homes were also reported across Tell, with forces reportedly surrounding the town from several directions. The latest arrests came a day after Israeli authorities announced a large-scale military operation in Palestinian villages across the West Bank. The move followed an attack near the Havat Gilad settlement in which two Israeli soldiers were killed and three others were wounded. Following the attack, Palestinian communities in the Nablus area reportedly came under further attacks. Local sources said homes and other Palestinian property were set on fire. The Palestinian Health Ministry said four Palestinians were killed on Friday during violence involving Israeli forces and settlers in Tell. Meanwhile, Israeli forces carried out additional raids in Jenin city and several surrounding communities before dawn, according to Palestinian reports. Troops searched homes and detained five Palestinians in the governorate as military activity continued in several locations. Three more Palestinians were reportedly detained in the Bethlehem governorate. In a separate incident in the northern West Bank, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said eight Palestinians were injured during an attack in Farata village, east of Qalqilya. Six of the injured were reportedly struck by live ammunition.

Over 317,000 Pakistanis leave for overseas jobs

LAHORE: More than 317,000 Pakistanis travelled abroad for employment during the first half of 2026, as economic pressures, unemployment, inflation and limited professional opportunities continue to push workers towards international job markets. Official figures show that 317,436 Pakistanis left the country for employment between January and June. Saudi Arabia remained the most popular destination, attracting 183,951 Pakistani workers during the six-month period. The United Arab Emirates ranked second with 50,773 workers, followed by Qatar with 34,025. Bahrain received 13,329 Pakistani workers, while 4,673 travelled to Türkiye for employment. Several other countries, including Cyprus, Greece, the United Kingdom and Malaysia, also attracted Pakistani workers. Of the total number, 316,848 workers completed their overseas employment registration through the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BE&OE). Another 588 workers secured employment through the Overseas Employment Corporation (OEC). The overseas workforce includes professionals from a wide range of sectors. Doctors, engineers, IT specialists, software developers, technicians and paramedical workers are among those seeking better employment prospects abroad. Experts say the continuing outflow could have both positive and negative consequences for Pakistan. Remittances sent by overseas workers provide an important source of foreign exchange and support millions of families in Pakistan. However, the departure of skilled professionals could also create challenges for sectors already facing shortages of qualified workers. Economic difficulties are being cited as a major factor behind the growing trend. Rising living costs, unemployment, heavy taxation and limited career opportunities have encouraged many young professionals to consider leaving the country. Experts have also expressed concern over Pakistan’s technological infrastructure. They argue that inadequate digital facilities, slow or disrupted internet services and limited research opportunities make it harder for professionals and businesses to compete internationally. The high cost of higher education is another concern. Young people seeking advanced qualifications often face significant financial pressure, while limited employment opportunities after graduation can encourage them to seek careers overseas. Thousands of additional Pakistanis are reportedly preparing to leave for employment and are currently completing documentation and other formal requirements through government offices. Workers travelling abroad have also reported difficulties during the departure process at airports in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and other cities. The trend is not limited to blue-collar workers. A significant number of highly qualified professionals and students are also considering international opportunities. Some Pakistani students who travelled to Canada, Europe and the United States on scholarships have expressed a desire to return after completing their studies. However, they say their decision will depend on whether employment, research and professional opportunities improve in Pakistan.

Bangkok’s original name has 168 characters

Did you know that the city with the world’s longest official name is also one of the most famous cities on Earth? Interestingly, the name by which most people know this city is not its official name. The city is Bangkok, the capital of Thailand whose full ceremonial name consists of 168 characters. If you ever visit Thailand, you are unlikely to hear local residents recite the full name as even many of them cannot remember it. The city’s full ceremonial name is Krungthepmahanakhonamonrattanakosinmahintharaayuthayamahadilokphopnoppharatratchathaniburiromudomratchaniwetmahasathanamonpimanawatansathitsakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. Bangkok’s official ceremonial name is recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest place name in the world. If you find it impossible to remember, you’re certainly not alone. The city also has a shorter official name in Thai: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon which is commonly shortened further by locals to simply Krung Thep. In 2022, the Thai government announced that both Krung Thep Maha Nakhon and Bangkok would be accepted as official Romanized names for the capital. The 168-character ceremonial name is derived from Sanskrit and Pali and its shorter form roughly translates to “The Great City of Angels.” However, historians are still uncertain why such an extraordinarily long ceremonial name was originally adopted. How did name “Bangkok” come about? According to popular accounts, the name Bangkok predates the establishment of the city as Thailand’s capital. It is believed to have originated from the area’s former village or district name possibly derived from the Thai words “Bang” (a village or riverside settlement) and “Makok” referring to a type of wild plum or olive tree that once grew abundantly in the area. Over time, the name Bang Makok is thought to have evolved into Bangkok, the name by which the city became known internationally.

PSX ends week lower as KSE-100 loses 4,781 points

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed the trading week with a significant decline, as the benchmark KSE-100 Index recorded heavy losses amid continued market volatility. The negative trend reflected cautious investor sentiment and sustained selling pressure across several sectors. During the week, the KSE-100 Index fell by 4,781 points to close at 171,021 points. The decline marked a weak performance for the stock market after several volatile trading sessions. Investors remained cautious throughout the week, resulting in fluctuations in share prices. The market witnessed wide swings during the five trading days. The benchmark index moved within a range of 8,857 points. It touched a weekly high of 178,370 points before dropping to a weekly low of 169,512 points, highlighting the uncertainty that dominated market activity. Despite the fall in the benchmark index, trading volumes remained healthy. Investors traded a total of 3.48 billion shares during the week. The combined value of these transactions reached Rs138 billion, indicating that market participation remained active despite the downward trend. The market decline also affected the overall value of listed companies. The total market capitalisation of the Pakistan Stock Exchange dropped by Rs512 billion during the week. As a result, the market’s total value stood at Rs19.278 trillion at the close of trading. Market analysts said investors adopted a cautious approach due to uncertainty surrounding economic conditions and profit-taking after recent gains. Selling pressure in key sectors also contributed to the decline in the benchmark index. Experts believe investors will continue to closely monitor economic indicators, corporate earnings, monetary policy developments and government decisions that could influence market sentiment in the coming weeks. Any positive economic developments or improved investor confidence may help the market recover, while continued uncertainty could keep volatility elevated. The week’s performance underscores the sensitivity of the Pakistan Stock Exchange to economic and financial developments, with investors expected to remain watchful as the new trading week begins.
