Sharjeel Memon accuses PML-N of violating election…

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of violating the election code of conduct ahead of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. Speaking at a press conference after a Sindh cabinet meeting in Karachi, Memon claimed that the ruling party was using its government position to influence the electoral process.

During the briefing, Memon also announced that the Sindh cabinet had approved a six-month extension of the health insurance program for employees of the Governor House and Chief Minister House. He added that travel allowances for government employees from Grade 1 to Grade 16 had also been increased.

Commenting on the recent heavy rainfall, the provincial minister said several districts in Punjab had been severely affected. He claimed that recent rains resulted in casualties in both Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and criticized what he described as limited media attention to the situation.

Turning to the political situation, Memon alleged that senior leaders of the federal and Punjab governments were focused on campaigning in Azad Kashmir instead of addressing public issues. He expressed confidence that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would secure a convincing victory in the upcoming AJK elections.

The minister also criticized what he described as governments formed through “manufactured mandates,” saying that true political legitimacy comes through public support. He reiterated that the PPP is not part of the federal coalition government and said the party had only extended support to strengthen the democratic process.

Memon further alleged that infrastructure development has been concentrated in Punjab while Sindh has not received similar attention, particularly in the construction of major motorways.

His remarks drew criticism from Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari, who defended the Punjab government’s development record and rejected the allegations. She argued that provincial resources are being spent on the welfare of Punjab’s residents and questioned the Sindh government’s own performance.

Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique also responded, saying critics should first examine the condition of their own provinces. He defended Punjab’s drainage system, claiming rainwater in Lahore is cleared within hours, unlike in parts of Sindh where waterlogging often persists for days.

The exchange of statements highlights the growing political rivalry between the PPP and PML-N as campaigning for the AJK elections intensifies.

Egypt confirms drone strike behind blaze at two ga…

A drone strike caused the fire that engulfed two gas vessels at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta, the Egyptian cabinet confirmed Thursday, ending speculation over whether the blaze that broke out a day earlier was an accident or an attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the strike, which occurred close to the Suez Canal, now serving as the last safe route for Saudi oil shipments reaching global markets. Egyptian authorities said they are continuing their investigation and taking steps to safeguard national security. British maritime security firm Ambrey said Wednesday that a drone had struck a US owned gas storage tanker at the port, an early assessment that raised fears the wider regional conflict could spread further. Three trading sources familiar with the incident said the drone hit the floating storage vessel Energos Winter, sparking a fire that then spread to a second ship, Gaslog Salem. According to maritime risk group Vanguard, the Energos Winter was struck on its starboard side, and the resulting fire was later extinguished. Egypt’s petroleum ministry said firefighting and security teams responded immediately and that the incident caused no injuries or fatalities. Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi traveled to the port to personally oversee the emergency response, according to the ministry. The strike came shortly after Iran launched a missile attack targeting US forces in Jordan, prompting Washington and Saudi Arabia to carry out strikes against Iran backed paramilitary groups in Iraq. President Donald Trump warned of retaliation against Iran, while Yemen’s Houthi movement declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, marking what appears to be the widest expansion of the conflict since the United States and Israel began bombing Iran in February. The Energos Winter is a floating storage and regasification unit owned by the US based firm Energos Infrastructure. Its technical, safety and commercial operations are managed by Wilhelmsen Ship Management, a Singapore based subsidiary of the Norwegian company Wilhelmsen Group. In a first for the five month war, Saudi Arabia publicly joined US forces in striking Iran aligned groups in eastern Iraq on Wednesday, responding to drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities that were launched from Iraqi territory. Following the joint operation, Saudi Arabia’s defense minister met with US Vice President JD Vance in Washington to urge the Trump administration against further escalation, according to two people familiar with the meeting. The conflict began in February when the United States and Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran that Trump initially said would last only a few weeks. A temporary ceasefire reached in June collapsed amid renewed fighting centered on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that Iran now claims to control. The latest strikes in Iraq and Egypt threaten to pull additional countries into the conflict, coming after Yemen’s Houthi forces declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia last week, putting the alternative Red Sea shipping route for Saudi oil bound for Asia at risk. Attacks on vessels by Houthi fighters have already prompted London’s marine insurance market to expand its high risk zone in the Red Sea to cover a larger stretch of coastline near Saudi ports. Trump said the United States would respond forcefully to Iran’s missile attack on American forces, while maintaining that Washington remains open to a negotiated peace deal to end a war that has unsettled global energy and financial markets. Oil prices jumped more than eight percent on Wednesday before easing slightly on Thursday amid volatile trading, with benchmark Brent crude hovering just under 90 dollars a barrel. Iran said Wednesday that it had struck three tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz along what it called an unauthorized route. Even so, a QatarEnergy controlled liquefied natural gas tanker exited the strait overnight, the first such vessel tracked leaving the waterway since July 11. Iran’s semi official Fars news agency reported that Tehran had specifically authorized the tanker’s passage. Oman has presented Iran with a Gulf backed proposal to manage traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, including a system of voluntary usage fees, according to sources familiar with the talks. Iran rejected that proposal on Wednesday, though foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said discussions with Oman over the strait’s management are continuing, according to the semi official ILNA news agency. Separately, sources familiar with the matter said Iran is expected to receive its first shipment within weeks of up to 400 Chinese made shoulder fired air defense missile launchers, part of an effort to shore up gaps in its ability to protect military sites and strategic infrastructure exposed during the war. Iran’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while China’s foreign ministry denied the report. The expanding pattern of strikes across Iraq, Egypt and the Red Sea underscores how a conflict initially centered on Iran has increasingly drawn in neighboring states and global shipping lanes, complicating efforts by mediators to contain the fighting before it further disrupts international energy markets.

Islamabad Police have detained former senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan over alleged violations of Section 144 and other charges linked to a protest rally in the federal capital. According to police officials, authorities took Khan into custody after he allegedly participated in a rally without obtaining the required permission. Police also accused him of violating restrictions imposed under Section 144 and causing a disturbance during the gathering. The authorities said the action followed the enforcement of restrictions on public gatherings and demonstrations in Islamabad. Section 144 allows the administration to impose temporary restrictions on public assemblies and other activities in order to maintain law and order. Police officials maintained that the former senator had not secured official permission to hold the rally and that his participation in the gathering led to legal action. Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, who previously served as a senator, has remained active in public and political affairs. His detention comes amid continued scrutiny of public demonstrations and political gatherings in the capital, where authorities often impose restrictions to prevent disruptions and maintain security. Further developments are expected as the situation unfolds.

NA committee summons Lahore metropolitan officer o…

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges has summoned Metropolitan Corporation Lahore’s Metropolitan Officer (Regulation), Jawad-ul-Hassan, to appear in person before the committee on September 1. The summons were issued on the direction of committee chairman Afzal Khokhar after the officer failed to attend an earlier committee meeting despite being served a notice. According to the National Assembly Secretariat, Jawad-ul-Hassan has been directed to appear at 2pm on September 1 in the Constitution Room of Parliament House, Islamabad. The committee took notice of his absence from its August 12 meeting and decided that his personal appearance should be ensured at the next proceedings. The summons were issued under Rule 227(3) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. The provision allows the committee to take steps to secure attendance when required in connection with parliamentary proceedings. The official notice also warned that failure to comply could lead to further action under the powers available to the committee. These powers include authority similar to that of a civil court for enforcing attendance and requiring the production of relevant documents. To ensure that the summons are properly served and implemented, the National Assembly Secretariat has sought assistance from the Punjab chief secretary. The inspector general of police Punjab has also been asked to provide necessary assistance, within the law, to facilitate the officer’s attendance before the parliamentary committee. Meanwhile, the chief officer of the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore has been directed to ensure that Jawad-ul-Hassan is informed about the summons and appears before the committee personally. The latest development represents an escalation following the officer’s earlier failure to attend the proceedings. The committee is now seeking his direct appearance rather than allowing the matter to proceed in his absence. The September 1 hearing is expected to provide the committee an opportunity to question the officer directly and examine the circumstances surrounding his previous non-appearance.

SANTIAGO: Cape Verde’s inspirational goalkeeper Josimar Jose Evore Dias, widely known as Vozinha, has completed a remarkable transfer to Chilean football powerhouse Colo-Colo, capping off an extraordinary rise that began with his unforgettable performances at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Chilean Premier Division leaders confirmed the signing on Monday after the veteran goalkeeper successfully passed his medical examination. The 40-year-old has signed a six-month contract, with the club holding an option to extend his stay for another year if both parties agree. Vozinha became one of the biggest surprise stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Cape Verde made history by reaching the knockout stage in their debut appearance at football’s biggest tournament. Rain likely in Karachi from today till August 3

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Karachi from Saturday afternoon or evening until August 3 as a weather system continues to influence parts of Sindh. According to meteorologists, the intense low-pressure system that had developed over southern Madhya Pradesh has weakened further. It is now located near Rajasthan as a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to weaken further over the next 24 hours. Despite weakening, the system continues to draw monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the upper and central parts of Pakistan. At the same time, a westerly weather system is also affecting the country’s northern regions, creating favourable conditions for rainfall in several areas. The Met Office said Karachi is likely to receive rain with thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon or evening through August 3 under the influence of the weather system. Weather experts also forecast intermittent rain accompanied by dust storms and thunderstorms in Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mithi until August 3. Similar weather conditions are expected in Sanghar, Hyderabad and surrounding districts during the same period. The PMD warned that heavy rainfall could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allahyar. The department also cautioned that heavy rain, strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures. Farmers have been advised to plan their agricultural activities according to the changing weather conditions to avoid potential losses. For Karachi, the Met Office said the sky is expected to remain mostly cloudy during the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature is likely to reach around 36 degrees Celsius. During the past 24 hours, the minimum temperature recorded in the city was 29.5 degrees Celsius.
