Sindh Colleges ban Ajrak, caps and gifts for visit…

KARACHI: The Sindh College Education Department has directed government colleges across the province to stop presenting traditional gifts and souvenirs to the Secretary College Education during official visits.

The directive, issued on August 6, instructs the Director General Colleges and regional directors in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur and Larkana, along with principals of government colleges, to ensure that no gifts are presented to the secretary during his visits.

The department has specifically prohibited the presentation of Ajrak, Sindhi caps and bouquets. It has also made clear that commemorative shields, souvenirs and other ceremonial items should not be offered.

Officials have been asked to strictly follow the instructions and ensure that the directive is implemented in both letter and spirit.

The department has warned that any failure to comply with the orders will be taken seriously, signalling a move away from the customary practice of presenting traditional gifts to senior officials during official visits.

Special religious and cultural activities are traditionally held during the Urs. Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Sindhi literature and Sufi tradition. His poetry is known for themes of love, spirituality, peace and human dignity. The provincial holiday is expected to facilitate devotees and residents participating in Urs-related activities across Sindh.

The M25 has been closed between Junction 21A and Junction 22, with motorists warned to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergency services took the decision to close the motorway amid concerns over smoke, falling debris and the potential for secondary explosions from the industrial site. Multiple fire appliances have been deployed to tackle the blaze, while police officers are also at the scene managing the emergency and surrounding traffic. National Highways has warned motorists to expect significant delays and congestion, urging drivers to allow extra time for their journeys or avoid the affected area altogether. The incident has caused major disruption on one of London’s key orbital routes, with congestion building on surrounding roads as traffic is diverted away from the closed section. Residents close to the fire have been advised to keep windows and doors closed because of the heavy smoke. The fire is also close to a railway line, with Network Rail representatives liaising with firefighters as emergency services assess the situation. The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Emergency crews remain at the scene and the M25 will stay closed while firefighters work to bring the blaze under control and authorities determine when it is safe to reopen the motorway. Motorists are being urged not to travel towards the affected section and to follow official traffic and emergency-service instructions. The incident remains ongoing.

    GUJRANWALA: In one of the largest enforcement drives against food safety violations in recent months, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed four outlets of national food chains, imposed fines amounting to Rs3.5 million and destroyed more than one maund of substandard and prohibited food ingredients during a major crackdown at the M-2 Sukheki Motorway Service Area. The operation was led by Special Assistant to the Punjab Chief Minister Salma Butt along with Punjab Food Authority Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmad. Five well-known food chains were inspected as part of the campaign aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety standards at one of the province’s busiest motorway service areas. According to the Punjab Food Authority, inspection teams found multiple violations of food hygiene and safety regulations at the inspected outlets. Four national food chain outlets were sealed after authorities detected serious lapses that posed potential risks to public health. Officials said inspection teams found freezers and washing areas in an unhygienic condition, with stagnant foul-smelling water and poor sanitation. Mandatory supply records, return logs and other essential documentation were either incomplete or unavailable. Inspectors also reported widespread insect infestation, while food items and raw materials were found stored directly on the floor in violation of food safety protocols. The authority further noted that bakery products at some outlets were being offered without manufacturing and expiry dates, making it difficult to verify their freshness and safety for consumers. Open drains, poor housekeeping and an overall unhygienic environment were also cited among the violations observed during the inspection. Besides sealing the outlets, the Punjab Food Authority imposed cumulative fines of Rs3.5 million on the violators. More than one maund of substandard and prohibited food ingredients was confiscated and destroyed on the spot to prevent their use or sale. Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Food Authority Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmad said the authority was pursuing a province-wide campaign to eliminate food adulteration and fraudulent practices from the food supply chain. “Our teams are working to block every avenue of food adulteration and fraud across Punjab. Strict monitoring is being carried out from food production to its distribution, and there will be no compromise on quality,” he said. He added that the authority was implementing a zero-tolerance policy against violators under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. “The sale and distribution of substandard or expired food products will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Enforcement operations will continue to ensure consumers receive safe and hygienic food,” he said. The Punjab Food Authority has intensified inspections across the province in recent months as part of its ongoing efforts to improve food safety standards and strengthen regulatory enforcement at restaurants, bakeries, food chains and processing units.

In a statement shared on X, Tarar described the reported incident as “highly deplorable” and said respect for senior artists must remain a core value of Pakistan’s entertainment industry. The minister said the proposed initiative would allow emerging actors to learn professional ethics, discipline and acting skills from experienced performers. He suggested that Mohammed Ahmed, given his decades-long contribution to television, would be well suited to lead the programme, or that a council of senior actors could oversee the initiative. Tarar also announced that he would soon convene a meeting of television artists and industry stakeholders to seek recommendations on establishing the mentorship programme. The controversy began after Mohammed Ahmed, during a recent podcast interview, recalled being mocked and humiliated by a younger lead actor while working on a television production. He described incidents in which the actor allegedly ridiculed him in front of colleagues and behaved disrespectfully during filming. Although Ahmed did not initially identify the individual, videos circulating on social media later linked actor Fahad Sheikh to the allegations. Responding to the criticism, Sheikh issued a public apology, saying that incomplete accounts of the incident had created a misleading narrative. He maintained that he had already apologised to Mohammed Ahmed privately before the issue gained widespread attention online. Sheikh also offered another public apology, acknowledging Mohammed Ahmed’s seniority and expressing hope that the veteran actor would accept his apology. He insisted that he had never intended to insult a senior colleague.
