Singer Chris Rea, Known for ‘Driving Home for Christmas,’ Dies at 74

Singer-songwriter Chris Rea, best known for the perennial holiday hit “Driving Home for Christmas” and the song “On The Beach,” has died at the age of 74. His family confirmed the news today, stating he passed away peacefully following a short illness.

Beach Boys singer and pop icon Brian Wilson dies at the age of 82

A somewhat reluctant pop star, the Middlesbrough-born Rea was famously shy of the spotlight and initially resisted his record label’s decision to release what would become his signature song. The track, released in 1986, went on to become a festive anthem and recently placed at number 30 in this year’s UK Christmas Top 40, nearly four decades after its debut.

A proud guitarist deeply influenced by the blues, Rea recorded 25 solo albums, two of which reached number one on the UK albums chart. He found fame in the 1970s and 1980s and performed worldwide, including numerous appearances for the BBC.

Beyond music, Rea was a passionate vintage car enthusiast who owned and raced several classic vehicles, including a 1957 Morris Minor 1000 police car. His love for motorsport led to a friendship with former Formula One team owner Eddie Jordan, who once enlisted Rea’s help in the pit lane during a Grand Prix.

A tribute posted on Rea’s official social media channels read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Chris… Chris’s music has created the soundtrack to many lives, and his legacy will live on through the songs he leaves behind.”

Sir David Attenborough continues to mark milestone…

Sir David Attenborough’s 100th year is proving to be just as remarkable as the career that came before it. The legendary broadcaster and natural historian continues to receive major recognition for his contribution to television and his lifelong work inspiring people to care about the natural world. Attenborough turned 100 on May 8, 2026, reaching the extraordinary milestone after more than seven decades in broadcasting. Rather than slowing down, he has continued to work on new projects while celebrating a century of life filled with exploration, storytelling and environmental advocacy.  His latest recognition comes through two major television award nods. Attenborough has been nominated for a 2026 Primetime Emmy Award, making him the oldest-ever nominee in the history of the awards. He received the nomination for his work as a narrator, adding another remarkable achievement to an already impressive list of honours.  He has also received his first-ever nomination for the National Television Awards. Attenborough is shortlisted in the TV Presenter category alongside well-known names including Ant and Dec, Claudia Winkleman, Alison Hammond and Stacey Solomon. The winners will be announced at the NTA ceremony at London’s O2 Arena on September 8.  The recognition comes during an especially busy year for the broadcaster. Several projects have been released to celebrate his centenary, including Wild London, Secret Garden and A Gorilla Story. The latter sees Attenborough return to the story of gorillas he first encountered while filming Life on Earth in Rwanda decades ago.  His 100th birthday was also marked with a major celebration at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The BBC event brought together musicians, celebrities and environmental figures to honour his extraordinary contribution to television and natural history. Attenborough said he had expected to celebrate quietly but was overwhelmed by the enormous number of birthday messages he received.  Institutions around the world have also joined the celebrations. Kew Gardens praised his lifelong commitment to plants, fungi and biodiversity, while the Natural History Museum named a newly discovered parasitic wasp Attenboroughnculus tau in his honour.  Attenborough’s influence extends far beyond television awards. Through programmes such as Life on Earth, Blue Planet and Planet Earth, he has helped generations understand the beauty and fragility of the planet. At 100, his latest nominations show that his voice and influence remain as powerful as ever. His extraordinary year is not simply a celebration of age, but a reminder of a lifetime spent bringing the wonders of nature into people’s homes.

Philippines school shooting livestreamed by studen…

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines: A school in the southern Philippines was plunged into panic on Tuesday after a Grade 9 student opened fire inside classrooms, killing a fellow student before taking his own life, authorities said. The attack was reportedly livestreamed through a body-worn camera, adding a disturbing dimension to an incident that has renewed concerns over school safety in the country. The shooting occurred at a school attached to the privately run Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga city. According to a preliminary police report, the student entered the campus carrying a pistol and a rifle before firing inside two classrooms. Zamboanga Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso said authorities confirmed that the attack had been livestreamed. Reuters said it verified footage showing the shooter entering one classroom and opening fire before switching weapons and moving to another classroom. Police identified the victim as a male Grade 10 student. The gunman, who was a Grade 9 student, later died by suicide. Two other people were wounded, while several students suffered injuries as they attempted to flee the building during the chaos. Classes were subsequently suspended. The motive behind the attack remained unclear. Officials said one of the weapons was a .40-caliber pistol issued by the Bureau of Customs to the shooter’s father, who is a customs official and has since been relieved of his post. A second firearm recovered from the scene was reportedly a licensed weapon belonging to the father. The incident prompted an immediate response from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who ordered law enforcement agencies to investigate the shooting and examine measures to prevent violence in schools. “Our schools are where we entrust our children to learn, to grow and to dream about the lives ahead of them,” Marcos said, stressing that schools should be among the safest places in the country. The school occupies an approximately eight-hectare site and includes facilities for grade school and junior high school students. Videos verified by Reuters showed students rushing from the campus as gunshots could be heard in the background. Tuesday’s attack comes less than two months after another school shooting in the Philippines. In June, at least three students were killed and about 20 others injured when two students opened fire at a public high school in Tacloban City. School shootings remain relatively uncommon in the Philippines, which has regulations covering firearm ownership, including background checks and psychological evaluations. However, officials continue to face challenges from the circulation of illegal firearms. The Zamboanga shooting also came less than 10 days after a student shooting rampage at a school near Bangkok, highlighting growing regional concerns over violence involving young people and the urgent need for stronger safeguards in educational institutions.

Anya Taylor-Joy shares unfiltered take on method a…

Anya Taylor-Joy is sparking fresh conversation about one of Hollywood’s most debated acting techniques. During a recent interview with Complex News, the acclaimed actress shared her candid thoughts on method acting, explaining why she believes many women approach the craft differently from their male counterparts. Rather than staying in character around the clock, Taylor-Joy said she prefers maintaining a healthy balance between her work and personal life.  The Queen’s Gambit and Furiosa star argued that women often have responsibilities outside of work that make it difficult to fully immerse themselves in a role 24 hours a day. “If you’ll notice, women don’t method act because we have things to take care of. We can’t completely lose our minds,” she explained during the interview. Despite taking on psychologically demanding roles, she says she relies on self-awareness and support from those around her to stay emotionally healthy throughout the filmmaking process.  As Taylor-Joy prepares for future projects, including The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and Dune: Part Three, her latest comments offer fans a revealing look into her creative philosophy. Sindh restores Saturday holiday for schools

The Sindh government has revised the weekly schedule for schools, restoring Saturday and Sunday as official weekly holidays for all public and private educational institutions across the province. According to the School Education and Literacy Department, the updated schedule has been approved by the chief secretary and will be implemented in all government and privately managed schools. Under the new arrangement, schools will operate five days a week, from Monday to Friday. To compensate for the reduced number of working days and ensure timely completion of the academic syllabus, daily teaching hours will be extended by one additional hour. Officials said the revised timetable aims to maintain the pace of academic activities while providing students and teachers with a two-day weekend. The latest decision replaces an earlier directive issued last month, under which all public and private schools in Sindh had been instructed to observe a six-day working week from August 1, with classes scheduled from Monday to Saturday. The change comes shortly after educational institutions resumed classes following the two-month summer vacation, which lasted from June 1 to July 31. Education authorities said the revised schedule will apply uniformly across the province and schools have been directed to implement the updated working days and teaching hours accordingly.

Ocean Winner sinks off India, 22 crew missing as r…

NEW DELHI: A major search-and-rescue operation was underway off eastern India on Sunday after a Panama-flagged bulk carrier sank in the Bay of Bengal, leaving 22 of its 24 crew members unaccounted for. The vessel, Ocean Winner, was carrying 24 crew members, including 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi, when communication with the ship was lost, according to the Indian Coast Guard. Two people have so far been rescued from life rafts. The vessel was transporting iron ore to Singapore after leaving India’s eastern Paradip port on Thursday. It sank about 240 nautical miles from the port, far from the Odisha coastline, prompting Indian authorities to mobilise ships for the rescue mission. The Coast Guard dispatched vessels from Sri Vijaya Puram, formerly known as Port Blair, to search the waters and locate other survivors. Nearby commercial vessels were also alerted and asked to assist in the operation as authorities raced against time to find the missing seafarers. The sinking has raised concerns for the safety of the remaining crew, particularly because the incident occurred in open waters. The cause of the vessel’s sinking was not immediately known, and officials had not provided an explanation for why communication with the ship was lost. The two rescued crew members were found in life rafts, providing a small but significant breakthrough in the search. Authorities continued to scan the surrounding waters for additional rafts, debris or signs of other survivors. The incident also highlighted the risks faced by seafarers travelling along busy international shipping routes in the Bay of Bengal. The Ocean Winner had departed Paradip carrying a commercial cargo of iron ore and was bound for Singapore when the voyage ended abruptly. Captain Alekha Charan Sahoo, deputy conservator of the Paradip Port Authority, expressed hope for the safety of those still missing and said he was praying for the crew. Indian authorities have continued coordinating the operation, with the Coast Guard and other vessels involved in the search. The focus remained on locating the missing sailors and bringing them to safety. For families and colleagues waiting for news, every hour of the operation carries enormous significance. With two crew members already rescued, authorities are hoping the ongoing search will lead to more survivors as teams continue combing the waters around the sunken vessel.
