Sir David Attenborough’s 100th year is proving to be just as remarkable as the career that came before it. The legendary broadcaster and natural historian continues to receive major recognition for his contribution to television and his lifelong work inspiring people to care about the natural world.

Attenborough turned 100 on May 8, 2026, reaching the extraordinary milestone after more than seven decades in broadcasting. Rather than slowing down, he has continued to work on new projects while celebrating a century of life filled with exploration, storytelling and environmental advocacy. 

His latest recognition comes through two major television award nods. Attenborough has been nominated for a 2026 Primetime Emmy Award, making him the oldest-ever nominee in the history of the awards. He received the nomination for his work as a narrator, adding another remarkable achievement to an already impressive list of honours. 

He has also received his first-ever nomination for the National Television Awards. Attenborough is shortlisted in the TV Presenter category alongside well-known names including Ant and Dec, Claudia Winkleman, Alison Hammond and Stacey Solomon. The winners will be announced at the NTA ceremony at London’s O2 Arena on September 8. 

The recognition comes during an especially busy year for the broadcaster. Several projects have been released to celebrate his centenary, including Wild London, Secret Garden and A Gorilla Story. The latter sees Attenborough return to the story of gorillas he first encountered while filming Life on Earth in Rwanda decades ago. 

His 100th birthday was also marked with a major celebration at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The BBC event brought together musicians, celebrities and environmental figures to honour his extraordinary contribution to television and natural history. Attenborough said he had expected to celebrate quietly but was overwhelmed by the enormous number of birthday messages he received. 

Institutions around the world have also joined the celebrations. Kew Gardens praised his lifelong commitment to plants, fungi and biodiversity, while the Natural History Museum named a newly discovered parasitic wasp Attenboroughnculus tau in his honour. 

Attenborough’s influence extends far beyond television awards. Through programmes such as Life on Earth, Blue Planet and Planet Earth, he has helped generations understand the beauty and fragility of the planet.

At 100, his latest nominations show that his voice and influence remain as powerful as ever. His extraordinary year is not simply a celebration of age, but a reminder of a lifetime spent bringing the wonders of nature into people’s homes.

    KP unveils massive 1.4m-tree plantation drive

    The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has set an ambitious target of planting 1.4 million saplings in a single day as part of its Independence Day celebrations. K-P Information and Public Relations Minister Shafi Jan said the large-scale plantation drive would be conducted across the province on August 14. He described the initiative as a major step towards expanding green cover and promoting environmental protection. The minister said extensive plantation activities would be carried out across a large area in Speen Khak, with teams taking part in the campaign to meet the record target. Shafi Jan, in his Independence Day message, said August 14 was a historic occasion that reminded the nation of the sacrifices made during the Pakistan Movement. He paid tribute to the leaders who struggled for the creation of Pakistan and those who sacrificed their lives for the country. He urged citizens to renew their commitment to building a stronger, stable, prosperous and sovereign Pakistan. According to him, national development requires collective responsibility, discipline and a continued commitment to the country’s future. The minister also highlighted the role of young people in national development. He said the younger generation should follow the ideals of Allama Iqbal and contribute towards making Pakistan more self-reliant and progressive. The provincial government has introduced a digital monitoring mechanism to improve transparency in the plantation campaign. The Ehsaas Shajarkari Web Portal will be used to identify suitable plantation locations through GPS technology. The portal will also help authorities monitor plantation activities and maintain a consolidated record of the saplings planted during the campaign. Officials will be able to track plantation sites and assess progress through the digital system. Shafi Jan said the initiative was being undertaken under the direction of K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. He expressed confidence that the province would achieve its target and establish a significant plantation milestone on Independence Day.

    Fresh monsoon spell to hit Pakistan from July 29

    Pakistan is expected to receive another widespread spell of monsoon rains from July 29 to August 5, with the weather system likely to affect several parts of the country. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of heavy and very heavy rainfall in several areas. It has also cautioned about urban flooding, flash floods and landslides. According to the weather advisory, moist monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are expected to enter the upper and central parts of the country from July 29. A westerly weather system affecting northern areas is also likely to strengthen from August 1. It may bring widespread rain and thunderstorms to upper and central regions. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and the Galliyat are expected to receive rain and thunderstorms from July 29 to August 4. Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot and nearby areas may also experience heavy rainfall. Several districts of central and southern Punjab are also likely to receive rain. These include Lahore, Narowal, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Jhang, Sargodha and Sahiwal. Southern Punjab may see rainfall between July 31 and August 3. Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan, Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur are among the areas expected to be affected. Sindh is likely to receive rain from July 31 to August 2. Karachi, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar and several other districts may experience thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall. Other parts of Sindh, including Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, Ghotki, Jacobabad, Shikarpur and Thatta, are also expected to receive rain. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is likely to face widespread rain and thunderstorms from July 29 to August 5. Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and several other districts may receive heavy or very heavy rain. Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai and Waziristan are also expected to experience rainfall during the forecast period. Balochistan is likely to receive rain and thunderstorms from July 31 to August 3. Zhob, Loralai, Kohlu, Sibi, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbela, Awaran, Turbat, Panjgur, Gwadar and several surrounding areas may be affected. Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are also expected to receive rain and thunderstorms. Kashmir may experience rainfall from the night of July 28 to August 5, while parts of Gilgit-Baltistan may remain affected until August 6. The PMD has issued a specific warning about urban flooding. Low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad could face flooding between July 30 and August 4. Several cities and districts in Sindh may also face urban flooding from July 31 to August 2. These include Hyderabad, Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Thatta, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Mithi, Mirpurkhas and Umerkot. The weather department has also warned of landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas. Upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir could be affected. Heavy rainfall may also cause flash floods in streams and nullahs. Hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and parts of northeastern Balochistan could also experience sudden flooding. Strong winds and lightning may damage weak structures during the spell. Solar panels, electricity poles, billboards and other vulnerable installations could be affected. The PMD has advised tourists and travellers to exercise caution during the rainy period. People travelling through mountainous areas have been urged to remain alert. Farmers have also been advised to plan agricultural activities according to weather conditions. They have been asked to take precautionary measures to protect crops and livestock.

    KP makes registration mandatory for street vendors

    PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has passed the Street Vendors Protection Bill 2026, making registration and vending certificates mandatory for people operating carts and roadside stalls across the province. The new law is expected to provide legal protection to more than 140,000 street vendors for the first time. Under the legislation, individuals aged 14 years and above will be eligible to register as street vendors. All vendors will be required to complete registration and obtain a valid vending certificate. Registered vendors will receive a modern digital vending certificate containing a QR code. The certificate is intended to formally recognise vendors and provide them with legal protection while carrying out their businesses. The law provides protection against unjustified eviction and harassment. Government employees found harassing street vendors could face strict departmental action. The legislation also introduces penalties for members of the public or shopkeepers who harass vendors. A person found guilty could face a fine of up to Rs20,000 or imprisonment for up to one month. Vendors will also have the right to appeal if their vending certificates are suspended or cancelled. The law prohibits vendors from selling or transferring their vending certificates to another person. Anyone violating this provision could face a fine of up to Rs3,000. The legislation also highlights the economic contribution of street vendors to the province. According to the bill, vendors collectively generate more than Rs380 billion in economic activity every year. The informal vending sector is estimated to contribute around Rs130 billion annually to the national economy. The government expects that better regulation and management of the sector could generate an additional Rs2.5 billion to Rs5 billion in annual revenue. The new legislation aims to bring the informal vending sector under a formal regulatory framework while providing vendors with legal recognition and protection.
