Spanish royals captivate with Mediterranean charm

Spain’s royal family has officially begun its annual summer holiday with a traditional public appearance in the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, where members of the royal household showcased relaxed yet elegant fashion that reflected the country’s coastal culture.

Every August, Spain’s monarchs spend part of their summer in Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands. The visit begins with an official reception at the historic Marivent Palace, where the royal family meets local government officials, community leaders and representatives from across the islands before starting their private vacation.

This year’s gathering brought together King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, their daughters Crown Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, as well as the King’s mother, Queen Sofía. The appearance highlighted the close relationship between Spain’s monarchy and the Balearic Islands while offering the public a glimpse of the family’s more casual summer style.

Unlike the formal attire usually seen during official state events, the royal family opted for lightweight outfits suitable for the warm Mediterranean weather. Queen Letizia, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most stylish royals, wore a flowing white dress by Spanish designer Sybilla. The elegant outfit featured soft pleats and subtle striped details, giving it a simple yet sophisticated look. She paired the dress with gold high-heeled sandals, while King Felipe chose a light blue shirt and neutral trousers, keeping his appearance relaxed.

Their elder daughter, Crown Princess Leonor, selected a sleeveless orange two-piece outfit by Spanish fashion label Thinking Mu. The colourful ensemble featured artistic shades of blue, yellow and orange, inspired by Mediterranean sunsets. She completed her look with gold bracelets and naturally styled hair.

Meanwhile, Infanta Sofía wore a long pastel-coloured maxi dress decorated with soft pink, cream and lavender tones, creating a fresh summer appearance. The youngest royal’s outfit complemented the vibrant floral caftan worn by Queen Sofía, whose multicoloured dress reflected the cheerful atmosphere of the Mediterranean season.

The annual reception is considered one of the final public engagements for the Spanish royal family before they begin their private summer holiday. The event has become a long-standing tradition and attracts significant public and media attention each year, with many observers focusing not only on the royal family’s activities but also on their fashion choices.

For many Pakistanis unfamiliar with Spain’s monarchy, the country’s royal family plays a largely ceremonial constitutional role similar to several other European monarchies. While the elected government manages day-to-day political affairs, the King serves as the country’s head of state and represents Spain during official ceremonies, national events and international engagements.

Colombia’s new president takes office with hardline pledge on security and economy

Abelardo De La Espriella has been sworn in as Colombia’s president in Cali, breaking with the tradition of holding the inauguration ceremony at the congressional building in Bogotá. The 48-year-old former lawyer and ally of US President Donald Trump won June’s runoff election on a platform focused on hardline security measures, significant cuts to state spending, and the expansion of national energy production. During his inaugural speech at the Pichincha Battalion military base, De La Espriella declared that peace negotiations with armed groups are completely exhausted. He stated that criminal syndicates must either submit to the rule of law or face a direct response from security forces. To combat drug trafficking, he announced plans to resume aerial spraying to eradicate coca crops and confirmed that Colombia will join the US-led Shield of the Americas programme. On the economic front, De La Espriella pledged to freeze public spending and simplify the tax regime to stimulate private investment, while proposing to reduce the size of the state by up to 40%. He confirmed that established social programmes would remain intact. To boost declining reserves, the new administration plans to expand oil and gas exploration, including the use of responsible fracking, alongside efforts to strengthen state-owned energy firm Ecopetrol. De La Espriella’s inauguration reflects a wider political shift across Latin America. Incoming Finance Minister Miguel Gomez noted a fiscal deficit between 7% and 8% of GDP, indicating that initial governance will depend on executive decrees whilst navigating a divided congress. Meanwhile, opposition figures led by Senator Ivan Cepeda organized peaceful demonstrations in Barranquilla, pledging to defend democratic institutions and monitor potential rollbacks of social protections.

Israel quietly receives advanced INS Drakon submar…

JERUSALEM: Israel has quietly taken delivery of the advanced INS Drakon submarine, with the handover reportedly taking place without the usual public ceremony or official fanfare. According to media reports, the submarine belongs to the Dakar-class fleet and was built in Germany by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The vessel is regarded as one of the most sophisticated additions to the Israeli Navy’s underwater fleet. Defense analysts say the INS Drakon is designed for long-range covert operations, intelligence gathering, and extended deployments at sea, significantly enhancing Israel’s naval capabilities. The submarine is part of Israel’s ongoing efforts to modernize its maritime defense amid evolving regional security challenges. Some defense experts have also suggested that Israel’s Dolphin-class submarines may be capable of carrying nuclear-armed missiles, although Israeli authorities have never officially confirmed such capabilities. The arrival of the INS Drakon further strengthens Israel’s strategic naval deterrence and expands its ability to conduct long-duration missions across distant maritime regions.

Rubina Ashraf urges greater awareness of postpartum depression

Rubina Ashraf, one of Pakistan’s most respected television veterans, recently spoke about the importance of recognizing postpartum depression and supporting women through pregnancy and motherhood. Appearing on a morning television show, the actress shared her thoughts on the emotional and psychological challenges many women experience before and after childbirth, emphasizing that these struggles deserve greater awareness and compassion. Having spent decades in the entertainment industry as an actress, director, and producer, Rubina has earned widespread recognition for her memorable performances in dramas such as Pas-e-Aaina, Tapish, Kasak, Do Bol, Khuda Aur Muhabbat 3, and Iqtidar. She also received praise for directing the acclaimed drama serial Ruswai. Beyond her successful career, Rubina is a devoted mother of two, and her daughter, Nawal Tariq, has also established herself as an actress in Pakistan’s television industry. During the conversation, Rubina highlighted how discussions around postpartum depression were almost nonexistent in previous generations. She explained that society traditionally viewed childbirth as a routine responsibility for women, often overlooking the immense physical and emotional changes they experienced. According to Rubina, people now need to understand that pregnancy is far more than a physical process. She said that a woman undergoes significant transformations in her body, skin, hormones, and emotions, making the journey both physically demanding and mentally exhausting. While pregnancy is often associated with happiness and excitement, it can also bring anxiety, stress, and emotional vulnerability. She stressed that pregnancy-related anxiety and postpartum depression are genuine medical and psychological conditions rather than signs of weakness. Rubina noted that many women silently struggle because their emotional health is ignored or misunderstood. Without proper care and emotional support, these feelings can develop into severe depression, affecting both the mother and her family. The actress urged families to become more aware of these challenges and encouraged them to provide women with understanding instead of judgment. She explained that a pregnant woman should not be expected to manage every household responsibility while dealing with the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy. Instead, she needs kindness, patience, and reassurance from those around her. Rubina particularly emphasized the crucial role of husbands during this period. She said that a husband’s support should begin during pregnancy and continue after childbirth, as these months can be among the most difficult in a woman’s life. Emotional encouragement, practical help, and compassion can make a significant difference in a mother’s mental well-being and recovery. She added that expecting mothers often feel overwhelmed because they are trying to balance multiple responsibilities while their bodies and emotions are constantly changing. Without a supportive environment, these pressures can become unbearable. Rubina’s heartfelt remarks have resonated with many viewers, drawing attention to the importance of maternal mental health. As awareness of postpartum depression continues to grow, her message serves as a reminder that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health during pregnancy and after childbirth. By encouraging empathy, open conversations, and stronger family support, she hopes more women will receive the care they need during one of the most life-changing phases of their lives.

Insider reveals where Ethan Slater stands with ex-…

Actor Ethan Slater is not rekindling his relationship with ex-wife Lilly Jay following his recent split from singer Ariana Grande, despite growing speculation online. New reports have dismissed rumors suggesting the former couple could reunite, with a source close to Jay insisting there is no romantic reconciliation taking place.  Speculation began after news broke that Grande and Slater had quietly ended their relationship after nearly three years together. According to sources, the breakup was mutual and amicable, with both stars choosing to remain friends while focusing on their personal and professional lives.  Following the split, social media users questioned whether Slater might reconnect with Lilly Jay, his former wife and the mother of his child. However, a source close to Jay has firmly denied those claims. TMZ reported that the former spouses are “absolutely not” getting back together, adding that reports suggesting Slater is trying to win her back are simply untrue.  The insider also noted that while Ethan and Lilly continue to co-parent their son, their relationship remains focused on parenting rather than romance. They are said to be committed to raising their child in a healthy environment, but there are no plans to revive their marriage.  Slater and Jay’s relationship attracted significant public attention in 2023 after news of his romance with Grande surfaced during the production of Wicked. At the time, both Slater and Grande faced intense media scrutiny. Slater and Jay later finalized their divorce, and both have since moved forward with their separate lives.  Meanwhile, Grande has also reportedly begun a new chapter following the breakup. Recent reports suggest she has reconnected with former boyfriend Ricky Alvarez, although neither has publicly commented in detail on the status of their relationship.  Despite the online rumors, those close to Lilly Jay say she has no interest in revisiting the past. Instead, her priority remains her family and maintaining stability for her son. Likewise, Slater is reportedly focused on his career and fatherhood rather than attempting to rebuild his previous marriage.  For now, the latest reports make one thing clear: while Ethan Slater and Lilly Jay continue to share the responsibility of co-parenting, there is no romantic reunion on the horizon. As public interest in their personal lives continues, sources close to the family hope to put the speculation to rest by emphasizing that both have moved on and are concentrating on the next chapter of their lives.

Trump says US-Iran talks to resume Monday

US President Donald Trump has announced that fresh negotiations between the United States and Iran are expected to begin on Monday, saying he decided to suspend planned military action after being encouraged by signs of progress toward a possible agreement. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said discussions with Tehran would resume through diplomatic channels, expressing hope that negotiations could help prevent further escalation in the region. He did not disclose the venue of the talks or identify the officials expected to participate. Earlier, Trump stated that he had delayed what he described as a large-scale military operation after receiving requests from Iran and several key US allies in the Middle East to give diplomacy another opportunity. According to him, regional partners believed a negotiated settlement was within reach and urged Washington to avoid immediate military action. Trump said Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had all encouraged restraint, arguing that continued dialogue offered the best chance for reducing tensions. He added that discussions were expected to cover issues related to the Strait of Hormuz as well as Iran’s nuclear programme. Despite Trump’s comments, Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed the planned negotiations. Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency rejected claims that Tehran had requested the United States to postpone military action, describing the assertion as inaccurate. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, said negotiations involving Oman over the future of the Strait of Hormuz were progressing toward a final stage, indicating that diplomatic contacts remain active. Trump also declined to set a deadline for reaching an agreement, saying his administration was prepared for different outcomes but preferred a peaceful resolution over military confrontation. The announcement had an immediate impact on global energy markets. Oil prices fell sharply in early Asian trading as investors reacted to the possibility of reduced tensions in the Gulf region. Brent crude and US benchmark oil both recorded notable declines following Trump’s remarks. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes, with roughly one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption in the area has the potential to significantly affect international energy markets.

Indian youth protest alleged exam irregularities in Jharkhand

Thousands of students and unemployed young people marched toward the state legislature in India’s eastern Jharkhand state on Monday. The protesters were demanding action over alleged irregularities in civil services recruitment examinations. Police used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators as they moved toward the state assembly in the state capital, Ranchi. The protesters accused authorities of failing to ensure transparency in government recruitment exams. They also raised concerns over alleged question paper leaks. The demonstrations began on July 25 and have grown in size in recent days. Thousands of young people had earlier gathered at a stadium in Ranchi as the campaign gained momentum. The protesters are demanding major changes to the state’s examination system. They have also called for the cancellation of certain examinations and a federal investigation into the alleged irregularities. On Monday, demonstrators moved toward the legislature despite heavy security arrangements. Some protesters climbed over police barricades while carrying placards and Indian flags. They chanted slogans and called for action against those responsible for the alleged examination problems. The protests reflect growing frustration among students and unemployed youth in Jharkhand, one of India’s less economically developed states. The state government has held talks with representatives of the protesters. Officials have said that many of their demands have already been accepted. The government has also indicated that it is willing to continue discussions to address the remaining concerns. The demonstrations in Jharkhand come amid wider anger among Indian youth over alleged corruption in recruitment examinations. Similar protests were held in New Delhi in recent weeks. Those demonstrations focused on alleged irregularities and paper leaks involving national-level examinations. The protests eventually contributed to the resignation of India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month, following controversy surrounding alleged leaks in a national medical entrance examination. The growing demonstrations have highlighted concerns over unemployment and limited job opportunities for young people. Students and job seekers argue that examination irregularities can damage their career prospects after years of preparation. The protests also reflect broader concerns about transparency in public recruitment and the credibility of competitive examinations.
