Mary Egida Rivera, the actress who won the hearts of Marvel fans with her memorable appearance as Ned Leeds’ grandmother in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has passed away at the age of 82. Her family confirmed that Rivera died peacefully on April 15, 2026, in Honolulu, Hawaii, after suffering a stroke. The news became public this week after a family member shared the details with TMZ. 

Although Rivera had only a brief role in the 2021 blockbuster, her performance left a lasting impression on audiences around the world. She portrayed the loving grandmother, or “Lola,” of Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon. One of the film’s funniest scenes featured Rivera speaking Tagalog while asking Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man to clean the cobwebs from her ceiling, creating a heartfelt moment that quickly became a fan favorite. 

According to her family, Rivera suffered a stroke that left her in a coma. Doctors reportedly warned that even if she regained consciousness, her chances of meaningful recovery were extremely low. After careful consideration, her loved ones made the difficult decision to remove her from life support. She later passed away peacefully and was cremated in Honolulu. 

Born on June 2, 1943, in Iloilo, Philippines, Rivera later settled in Hawaii, where she built a life centered on family, education and community service. Before making her Hollywood debut, she worked as a teacher, radio broadcaster and church missionary. Her family said she was incredibly proud to represent the Filipino community in one of Marvel’s biggest films and cherished the opportunity to share the screen with stars including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. 

Tributes have continued to pour in from fans and colleagues following the announcement of her passing. Jacob Batalon honored his on-screen grandmother with a heartfelt social media message, writing, “Rest in paradise Lola.” Many fans also praised Rivera for bringing Filipino culture and the Tagalog language to a global audience through her unforgettable scene in the film. 

Rivera is survived by her husband, Alejandro Rivera, four children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. While her acting career was brief, her warmth, authenticity and pride in her heritage made her performance truly unforgettable. Her role in Spider-Man: No Way Home remains a touching reminder that even a small part can leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of millions.

    Nine cops martyred in Hangu terrorist attack

    PESHAWAR: Nine police personnel, including DSP Diyar Khan, were martyred and 28 others injured after terrorists attacked the Khazina Banda police check post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district late Wednesday night. According to KP Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed, the attackers launched a coordinated assault while officers were on duty. Police reinforcements rushed to the scene but came under an ambush, damaging an armoured personnel carrier. Police retaliated strongly, killing 15 terrorists and injuring several others during an intense gun battle. The IG praised the bravery of the officers and vowed that operations against terrorists would continue across the province. In a separate incident, terrorists also attacked a police check post in Peshawar’s Adezai area. Police returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee without causing any casualties. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the Hangu attack, paid tribute to the martyred officers, and expressed condolences to their families. He also briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on the country’s security situation, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The president praised the sacrifices of the security forces and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to eradicating terrorism.

Shahzad was sanctioned following the dismissal of West Indies batter Shai Hope. The Pakistan pacer celebrated aggressively after taking the wicket during the 17th over of the West Indies’ second innings. Abbas was penalised for his animated celebration after dismissing Jomel Warrican. The charges were brought by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Kettleborough. Third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal was also involved in the disciplinary process. The proposed sanctions came from Jeff Crowe, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Both Pakistani bowlers accepted their respective offences and the proposed penalties. As a result, no formal hearing was required. Under ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches can result in an official reprimand or a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee. Players can also receive one or two demerit points. The demerit points remain on a player’s disciplinary record for 24 months. A player who accumulates four or more demerit points during that period can have them converted into suspension points. Such suspension points can eventually lead to a ban from international cricket.

    Germany pledges justice as Berlin attack shocks nation

    BERLIN, July 26: German authorities have launched a major investigation after a vehicle drove into a crowd near a Pride event in Berlin, killing one person and injuring 16 others. The incident took place late Saturday night in the Tiergarten area, close to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. The location was near the route of Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s largest annual LGBTQ Pride celebrations. Emergency services said eight people were seriously injured. Three of them were in critical condition. Police have identified a man they describe as being known to authorities and linked to the Islamist scene. They released his photograph and appealed to the public for information about his whereabouts. Authorities said the suspect was believed to be around 1.90 metres tall, slim and had black hair. He was reportedly last seen wearing a black hooded top and white trousers. Police have not yet established whether the suspect acted alone. Investigators are also examining reports that more than one person may have left the vehicle after it stopped. Some of those injured reportedly suffered stab wounds, adding another element to the investigation. The vehicle eventually came to a stop after striking a tree in the Tiergarten.     Electricity tariff likely to increase by Rs1 per unit from next month

    ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face higher power bills from next month as electricity distribution companies have approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a quarterly tariff adjustment. According to sources, the proposed adjustment could result in an increase of around Rs1 per unit in electricity prices during the upcoming quarter. The distribution companies have submitted their adjustment request to NEPRA, which will examine the figures and determine the impact on consumers under the applicable quarterly tariff mechanism. Sources said the expected increase is linked to the expiry of the existing quarterly adjustment relief. Under the current arrangement, consumers are receiving a relief of Rs1.99 per unit, which is scheduled to expire at the end of the current month. With the relief ending, electricity tariffs are expected to rise for consumers across the country from next month, subject to NEPRA’s approval of the proposed adjustment. The quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism is used to pass on changes in electricity generation costs and other relevant expenses to consumers. Depending on the regulator’s assessment, the resulting adjustment can either increase or reduce electricity bills. The proposed increase is likely to add to the financial burden on households and businesses already facing elevated electricity costs. Consumers are now awaiting NEPRA’s decision, which will determine the final impact on electricity tariffs in the upcoming quarter. NEPRA is expected to review the distribution companies’ submissions before announcing its decision. The final adjustment may differ from the amount initially sought by the power distribution companies following the regulator’s scrutiny of the data and applicable costs.
