Terrorist killed in joint operation in Bannu

A terrorist was killed during a joint intelligence-based operation in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said on Monday.

The operation was carried out by district police, the Counter-Terrorism Department, the Quick Response Force and security forces.

The operation took place in the Miryan area after intelligence reports indicated the presence of suspected terrorists.

Security personnel conducted searches in Khani Kalay, Barakzai and nearby areas. The areas fall within the jurisdiction of Miryan police station.

An exchange of fire took place during the operation. One unidentified terrorist was killed.

Police said the identity of the deceased was being established.

A Kalashnikov was recovered from the scene. Three magazines and a bandolier were also found in the possession of the killed terrorist.

Security personnel later conducted search operations in surrounding areas. Several suspected individuals were detained for questioning.

Bannu District Police Officer Captain (retd) Muhammad Furqan Bilal praised the personnel who participated in the operation.

He described the security and police personnel fighting terrorism as the country’s real heroes.

The DPO said intelligence-based operations would continue across Bannu. He said the objective was to eliminate terrorism and crime from the district.

He also urged local residents to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies. Citizens were asked to report suspicious individuals and activities to police.

The latest operation is part of intensified security efforts in Bannu. The district has witnessed several terrorist incidents and counterterrorism operations in recent months.

On July 20, another joint intelligence-based operation was conducted in Bannu. Police said one suspected terrorist was killed and eight others were detained during that operation.

The operation involved district police, the Elite Force, CTD personnel and Pakistan Army troops.

Security forces had also established checkpoints and cordoned off the area during the operation.

Police said the killed suspect was allegedly attempting to plant an improvised explosive device. A Kalashnikov, magazines and ammunition were recovered.

Security concerns in Bannu have increased following several attacks targeting police and security installations.

On July 15, terrorists attacked the Miryan police station using an explosives-laden vehicle. A prolonged exchange of fire followed the attack.

Six police officers and four civilians were injured in the incident.

The attackers also damaged a bridge leading to the police station. Authorities believed the move was intended to slow the arrival of reinforcements.

The wider security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has remained challenging. Balochistan has also witnessed an increase in militant activity.

Security forces have responded with intelligence-based operations against suspected militant networks.

Authorities have repeatedly stressed the need for public cooperation to counter terrorism. Officials have also raised concerns about militant groups operating from across the Afghan border.

The latest operation in Bannu reflects the continued efforts of law-enforcement and security agencies to prevent further attacks.

His comments came as recent polling showed a noticeable increase in negative attitudes toward both the Israeli government and the Israeli people. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found that public opinion has shifted over the past several years. The percentage of Americans holding unfavourable views of the Israeli people rose from 28 percent in 2019 to 42 percent in 2026. During the same period, favourable views of the Israeli government fell from 41 percent to 32 percent.     AJK polls underway as 1.4m voters cast ballots

    MUZAFFARABAD: Polling is underway in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. Voting started at 8am and will continue until 5pm. Elections are being held today in 13 constituencies across three districts of Mirpur division — Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Polling has started at several stations. However, voting has yet to begin at some locations because voters have not arrived. In Kotli, polling is underway at Polling Station No. 38 in Aghar Colony. Voting has not started at polling stations 36 and 37 due to the absence of voters. Candidates cast votes Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, contesting from LA-7 in Bhimber, cast his vote at Polling Station No. 161. Speaking after voting, Farooq said voter turnout was expected to be higher in rural areas than in cities. He also urged women to leave their homes after completing household responsibilities and exercise their right to vote. Farooq expressed satisfaction with the law and order situation and the arrangements made for the elections in Bhimber. PPP confident of victory Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Muhammad Humayun Khan said the party was confident of securing a strong victory in the Azad Kashmir elections. He said the party’s electoral symbol, the arrow, represented the Kashmiri people’s rights to governance, ownership and employment. Humayun Khan said the PPP would continue to raise the voice of the people of Kashmir at every forum. He also called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission, describing it as an important need. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari also expressed confidence that voters in Azad Kashmir would support the PPP. He said the party had played an important role in establishing a parliamentary democratic system in Azad Kashmir. More than 1.4 million voters registered A total of 296 candidates are contesting the elections, including candidates from the PPP, PML-N, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party and independent candidates. There are 1,401,439 registered voters across the 13 constituencies. The number includes 725,118 male voters and 675,628 female voters. A total of 2,454 polling stations have been established across Mirpur division. Mirpur district has 597 polling stations across four constituencies. Kotli has 1,107 stations across six constituencies, while 608 polling stations have been established in three constituencies of Bhimber. Officials urge voters to participate Mirpur Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz and DIG Kamran Ali visited wards 16 and 17 of LA-3 to review the polling arrangements. Speaking to the media, Commissioner Mumtaz said polling was proceeding peacefully across all three districts from 8am. He urged voters to come out and cast their ballots without fear. He assured the public that the administration had arranged a peaceful environment for voters. Tight security arrangements Authorities have put in place extensive security measures for the elections. Azad Kashmir Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Mustafa Mughal warned that legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt the voting process. AJK Chief Secretary Khushal Khan said the people of Azad Kashmir had rejected groups seeking to create disorder and had shown confidence in the democratic process. He said all state institutions were prepared to ensure peaceful elections.

    Rs22 Billion allocated to PIMS, 14 newborns dead

    ISLAMABAD: A deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on August 26 resulted in the deaths of at least 14 newborns, raising serious questions about safety standards, hospital management and the use of public funds. The tragedy has brought renewed attention to the financial resources provided to the country’s major public hospitals. Federal government records show that approximately Rs22 billion was allocated to PIMS over the past three years. Despite these substantial allocations, the hospital continues to face staff shortages, maintenance concerns and problems with essential equipment Official budget figures show that PIMS received an allocation of Rs6.84 billion during the previous financial year. However, the hospital spent approximately Rs7.51 billion, exceeding its approved budget by around Rs670 million.The institution also received an additional Rs660 million in supplementary funds during the year.For the current financial year, the government’s allocation for PIMS has been increased to approximately Rs7.63 billion. Questions have also been raised over funds allocated for repair and maintenance. The federal government had previously provided Rs500 million under this category, while only Rs230 million has been earmarked for the current year. These figures have prompted concerns over whether available resources are being effectively utilised and whether sufficient priority is being given to basic safety, maintenance and patient care. Despite receiving billions of rupees in government funding, PIMS is reportedly operating with a significant shortage of staff. Hospital data indicates that 949 sanctioned positions remain vacant. These include 385 doctors, 363 nurses and 201 paramedical staff. Such shortages can place additional pressure on existing employees and affect the hospital’s ability to provide timely care. Understaffed wards can also make emergency response more difficult, particularly in critical departments where patients require continuous monitoring. The PIMS fire has therefore intensified questions about whether staffing gaps and inadequate resources played any role in the tragedy. Determining the exact causes, however, will require a transparent and independent investigation. The concerns surrounding PIMS are part of a broader debate over safety and accountability in Pakistan’s public hospitals. A review of reported incidents between 2016 and 2026 has highlighted several cases involving alleged negligence and failures in healthcare facilities across the country. In June 2025, 20 children, including 15 newborns, reportedly died at DHQ Hospital Pakpattan, with oxygen shortage cited as a possible factor. In October 2020, seven patients died at Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar following an oxygen supply failure. In November 2024, a three-year-old child reportedly fell into an open manhole inside Children’s Hospital Lahore. Other reported incidents across different cities have involved alleged treatment delays, incorrect injections, oxygen-related problems and unsafe hospital infrastructure. The PIMS tragedy has once again raised questions about whether increasing government allocations are producing meaningful improvements in public healthcare. The government has ordered an inquiry into the fire, which is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify any negligence or safety failures. For the families who lost their newborns, however, no investigation can undo the loss. The central question now is whether the billions allocated to PIMS have been used effectively and whether hospital authorities maintained adequate staffing, equipment, fire-safety systems and infrastructure. If a major public hospital receiving billions in government funding cannot guarantee basic safety for vulnerable patients, accountability must extend beyond temporary suspensions or administrative changes. The tragedy has highlighted the urgent need for stronger oversight, transparent financial management, adequate staffing and enforceable safety standards across Pakistan’s public healthcare system.

    HR Committee raises alarm over violence against wo…

    Islamabad: Concerns over increasing cases of gender based violence and the protection of women and children came under discussion as the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights reviewed government efforts to prevent crimes, improve investigations and provide better support to victims. The committee questioned whether existing systems are strong enough to protect victims and ensure quick justice, while calling for clearer laws, wider awareness campaigns and improved access to support services. The 13th meeting of the committee reviewed the performance of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), government measures against violence and progress on previous recommendations. The meeting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Asiya Naz Tanoli, with Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Barrister Danyal Chaudhry serving as co chair.   During the briefing, NCSW informed the committee that its complaint management system has been active for the last five months to help women report problems and receive support. Officials said consultants working on the complaint system received special training with support from Rozan to improve complaint handling. The committee was also informed that gender based data is being updated through the National Gender Data Portal to help the government make better policies based on facts. Officials said the first Gender Parity Report has already been published and future reports will include provincial level information. The committee was informed that NCSW has also conducted media training sessions to improve reporting of rape and gender violence cases. Officials said journalists were trained to report such sensitive cases with responsibility, dignity and care for victims. The Ministry of Human Rights told the committee that reported cases of gender based violence increased between 2022 and 2024, leading authorities to strengthen special investigation units and women and child protection units. Officials said police officers and relevant staff received specialised training while complaint systems were improved to provide faster support to victims. Barrister Danyal Chaudhry stressed that awareness about harassment laws is necessary in both public and private institutions. He said people must understand their rights and responsibilities so that victims can seek help and legal procedures remain clear for everyone involved. He also called for removing confusion around the definition of harassment so that both complainants and accused persons understand their legal position. The parliamentary secretary recommended wider promotion of the Ministry of Human Rights 1099 helpline and the 1121 child helpline through newspapers, pamphlets and other awareness campaigns. He said many people are unaware of available support services and greater publicity can help victims reach authorities quickly. Committee member Shahida Rahmani suggested presenting a real rape case as a case study before the committee. She said studying actual cases could help lawmakers prepare practical recommendations to improve the justice system. The Secretary of the Ministry of Human Rights informed the committee that some countries provide free trial systems for rape victims. He suggested that Pakistan should examine the possibility of introducing a similar system to make justice safer, easier and more accessible for victims.
