Texter’s thumb warning signs

Smartphones have become an important part of daily life but using them for long hours can put extra stress on your hands especially your thumbs.

If you often spend hours typing chatting or scrolling through social media and notice pain stiffness numbness or a clicking feeling in your thumb wrist or hand don’t ignore these signs.

Health experts say this condition is commonly known as “Texter’s Thumb.” It is a term used for hand and thumb problems caused by repeated smartphone use.

Common symptoms include thumb joint pain stiff fingers swelling near the thumb and discomfort while moving it.

Doctors warn that ignoring these symptoms can lead to more serious hand and wrist problems over time.  In the past people mainly used phones for calls and text messages.

Today smartphones are used for social media online banking watching videos shopping gaming and many other daily tasks.

This increase in screen time puts continuous pressure on the hands. Dr. Maureen O’Shaughnessy from the University of Kentucky HealthCare Hand Center says smartphones are now a permanent part of modern life so people should learn healthier ways to use them without putting unnecessary strain on their hands and body.

Experts explain that holding a phone in the same position for hours or keeping the wrist and elbow in one position for too long can cause pain at the base of the thumb and in the wrist.

Using only one hand for most phone activities can also tire the fingers. Many people notice their pain improves after spending a few days using their phones less.

To reduce the risk experts recommend taking regular breaks from your phone. If you cannot avoid using it try changing how you hold it switch between your left and right hand and use different fingers instead of relying only on your thumbs.

Reducing endless scrolling can also help.

Using the phone’s voice to text feature is another simple way to reduce typing and lower stress on your hands.

Increasing the font size can make the screen easier to read without holding the phone too close.

Grip holders or phone rings attached to the back of the device can also improve comfort by spreading the phone’s weight across your hand and acting as a stand while watching videos.

If your hands or thumbs feel sore after a long day of phone use spend a few minutes each day doing gentle stretches for your fingers and wrists.

Experts say these simple exercises can relax the muscles improve blood flow and help prevent future hand and wrist problems.

Echoes of 1971 in Pakistan’s Kashmir policy

History rarely repeats itself in exact terms, but it frequently rhymes through patterns of power, dissent and state responses. In Pakistan, analysts and political observers are increasingly highlighting the parallels between historical missteps. It is specifically the events leading up to the loss of East Pakistan in 1971 and the contemporary public grievances in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The Cost of Ignoring Electoral Mandates In 1970, General Yahya Khan permitted general elections across Pakistan. The Awami League in East Pakistan secured a decisive democratic victory by winning 162 out of 300 national seats. However, rather than facilitating a peaceful transfer of power, military leaders stalled negotiations in Dhaka through early 1971. This breakdown in dialogue culminated in Operation Searchlight, a military crackdown targeting intellectuals, students, and Bengali civilians. The resulting violence triggered a massive refugee crisis. Approximately ten million people were sent to India. A war that ultimately led to the creation of Bangladesh. Pakistan’s own Hamoodur Rahman Commission concluded that political failure and operational excess by military leadership were central to the catastrophe. Despite these official findings, the report remained suppressed for decades, leaving fundamental lessons about the dangers of military overreach largely unexamined within state institutions.  Unrest in Pakistan-Controlled Kashmir Today, army leadership under General Asim Munir continues to champion strong nationalistic rhetoric regarding Kashmir. He has been asserting it as the nation’s core and a willingness to fight further conflicts over Indian-administered territory. Yet, a  different internal dynamic has been evolving since 2025 within the territories Pakistan actually controls. Local populations have mobilized in widespread demonstrations driven by clear economic and political grievances. Unmanageable costs for basic essential goods. Disproportionately high pricing for local power distribution. Legislative structures that assign disproportionate authority to mainland administrators rather than local residents. State institutions responded with heavy-handed measures rather than operating for meaningful negotiation. The organizing groups were banned, communication blackouts were implemented and arrests occurred. Security forces deployed live fire against demonstrators  and caused dozens of civilian casualties. The Danger of Ignoring Unheard Grievances The concern raised by historians is not that history will reproduce the exact outcome of 1971, but that the state is relying on the same flawed logic. State is again attempting to suppress domestic economic and political grievances through state force. When state policy prioritizes coercion over political engagement, it risks alienating populations. The lingering question for Pakistan’s establishment is whether the lessons of past governance failures will finally be integrated, or whether suppressed grievances will once again lead to deep institutional crises.

  • Researcher warns against neck perfume

A cancer researcher has advised people not to spray perfume directly on their neck as part of their daily routine. She says that repeated long term exposure to some fragrance chemicals may pose possible health risks. Anna Canadas, a PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Pathology shared this advice in a viral social media video. According to her perfumes can contain hundreds or even thousands of chemicals.  Many of these ingredients are listed simply as “fragrance” instead of being named individually making it difficult for consumers to know exactly what they are using. Referring to research published in Frontiers in Toxicology she explained that some ingredients commonly found in perfumes and cosmetics including phthalates formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been identified as endocrine disrupting chemicals. These substances may interfere with the body’s hormone system or act like hormones which could affect normal body functions. However experts stress that there is no clear scientific evidence showing that spraying perfume on the neck directly causes cancer. The concern is about repeated exposure to certain chemicals over many years which may increase potential health risks. Researchers say the goal is not to scare people away from using perfume but to encourage safer habits and reduce unnecessary exposure to chemicals. Doctors also point out that the skin on the neck is thinner and more sensitive than many other parts of the body. This may allow some ingredients to be absorbed more easily. Applying perfume right after a hot shower may increase absorption because the skin is warm and pores are more open. Dermatologists recommend a few simple precautions. Spray perfume on clothes instead of directly on the neck. If applying it to the skin choose less sensitive areas such as the wrists. Consider perfumes made with more natural ingredients. Avoid applying perfume immediately after a hot shower.

As people grow older their physical and mental abilities naturally begin to decline. Researchers from Augusta University in the United States studied how daily multivitamin use affects the health of older people. The study analyzed data from more than 16,000 adults aged 60 and above.
