vaping may harmful

Vaping may be as harmful as smoking

Smoking is well known to cause lung cancer heart disease and breathing problems.  However many people believe that vaping is a safer alternative.

New scientific research suggests this belief may be misleading. Studies show that using e-cigarettes can also harm the body and may cause damage similar to that seen in cigarette smokers.

Experts say switching from cigarettes to vaping should not be considered completely safe.

Although e-cigarettes do not contain traditional tobacco they still expose the body to harmful substances.

Research published in 2026 by the University of New South Wales along with findings from scientists at the University of Southern California found that vaping can damage the DNA in cells of the mouth and lungs.

DNA is the body’s genetic blueprint. It controls how cells grow and function. When DNA is damaged the risk of serious diseases including cancer can increase.

Researchers also found that sweet and fruit flavored vape products may contribute to DNA damage.

People who use pod based vaping devices showed even higher levels of cell damage in the study.

According to the scientists vaping may increase the risk of cancers of the mouth and lungs.  The research also found that DNA damage in people who vape was almost as severe as the damage seen in cigarette smokers.

Although vaping and smoking work differently both can seriously affect health. Health experts advise people not to think of vaping as a harmless option.

Every vaping session may damage important cells in the body. They recommend avoiding vaping altogether and raising awareness about its possible health risks.

  • Video games may improve memory

Video games are often seen as just a form of entertainment but a new scientific review suggests they may also benefit the brain. A research review covering 20 years found that people who play video games may perform better in some mental skills especially memory. Researchers examined the results of many previous studies to understand how video games affect the brain. Their goal was to find out whether gaming can improve thinking and learning abilities. The review found a small but statistically significant link between playing video games and better cognitive performance. The strongest improvement was seen in memory. People who played video games generally scored higher in memory-related tests than those who did not. Experts say this may be because many games require players to remember information follow different events make quick decisions and plan strategies. Repeating these tasks can act as a form of mental exercise that helps strengthen memory. Some games also require players to focus on several things at once keeping the brain active. The research also looked at other mental abilities including spatial skills visual attention cognitive control and intelligence. Gamers showed slightly better performance in these areas as well but the biggest and most consistent benefit was found in memory. Researchers noted that not all video games have the same effects. The studies included different types of games such as action games and brain training games as well as participants of different ages.  These differences may explain why the results were not exactly the same across all studies. The researchers also cautioned that it is still too early to say that video games can greatly improve all mental abilities in daily life. More long term studies are needed to understand how long these benefits last and how useful they are in everyday activities. Health experts say playing video games in moderation may support brain health but it should be combined with a balanced diet regular exercise enough sleep and healthy screen time habits. When enjoyed as part of a balanced lifestyle video games can offer both entertainment and potential mental benefits.

  • Ukraine moves against Russian Kids’ cartoon

Ukraine has imposed sanctions on the producers and distributors of the popular Russian children’s cartoon “Masha and the Bear.” Ukrainian officials say the show may help spread a positive image of Russia and could pose a risk to the country’s national security. According to Al Jazeera, Ukraine’s Culture Minister Tatiana Berezhna announced the decision on social media.  She said the sanctions could allow legal steps to limit the cartoon’s content and restrict its distribution and earnings on global platforms. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the related decree on Thursday.  The measures include Animaccord the studio behind the cartoon along with other people and organizations connected to the series. A Worldwide Children’s hit “Masha and the Bear” follows the adventures of a playful young girl named Masha and her friend a retired circus bear. The show has become hugely popular around the world. Its YouTube videos have received more than 37 billion views while some individual episodes have been watched more than four billion times.  The cartoon is shown in around 100 countries. Ukraine raises concerns Ukraine and some of its allies, including the UK and Estonia have criticized the show. They argue that it presents Russia in a positive way and could be used as a form of soft power to increase Russian cultural influence. Ukraine’s culture minister said children’s programs should not be used to promote Russian propaganda.  The government wants to reduce the cartoon’s reach inside Ukraine and also limit its income and distribution through international platforms. Still popular in Ukraine Despite the war and restrictions on Russian cultural content, “Masha and the Bear” remains popular among Ukrainian children. According to Ukrainska Pravda, the cartoon’s Ukrainian YouTube channel became the country’s most popular children’s channel in August last year. It now has more than 18 million followers. Russia rejects the claims Russia has rejected Ukraine’s accusations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov defended the cartoon saying it has become popular worldwide and promotes positive human values. Ukraine had also raised concerns in June when Netflix reportedly sought rights to stream new seasons of the show. Following the latest sanctions Ukrainian authorities may take further steps to restrict the cartoon’s content and distribution in the country.

  • Drill free treatment for children’s tooth decay

A major study in the United States has found that silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a safe low cost and effective way to treat tooth decay in young children. The treatment could help thousands of children avoid painful dental drilling and general anesthesia. The study found that a 38% silver diamine fluoride solution can be applied to the affected tooth in just a few seconds.  The liquid helps stop tooth decay from getting worse without the need for injections drilling or surgery. The Phase 3 clinical trial was led by the University of Michigan and included 830 children under the age of six. Researchers from universities in New York and Iowa also took part in the study. The findings were published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics. Researchers discovered that applying SDF every six months successfully stopped tooth decay in more than half of the affected baby teeth. Unlike traditional dental treatment this method does not require removing part of the tooth or placing a filling. Instead the liquid is simply painted onto the decayed area. Professor Margarita Fontana from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry who led the research said the treatment was found to be safe and effective even for children as young as one year old. Experts believe that if SDF receives full approval as a standard treatment for tooth decay it could make dental care easier less expensive and far less stressful for young children and their families.

  • Starvation Wages in Times of Inflation

Hani Rasheed I wish to draw attention to the worsening condition of daily wage labourers. Despite working from morning till evening under the scorching sun, many labourers receive only around Rs1,500 a day. In today’s high inflation, this amount is far from enough to cover basic necessities such as food, rent, transport, education, and medical expenses. The rising cost of living has made survival extremely difficult for low-income families. While prices continue to increase, the wages of many labourers remain unchanged. This imbalance is forcing hardworking people deeper into poverty despite their honest efforts. The government should revise the minimum wage in line with inflation and ensure that employers pay workers fairly and on time. Protecting the rights of labourers is essential for social justice and economic stability. I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate action to improve the lives of daily wage workers

Freedom is not a luxury or a favour; it is a basic right of every human being. People deserve the freedom to express their opinions, choose their future and live with dignity. Unfortunately, many people still face restrictions, fear and injustice when they raise their voices. When freedom is suppressed, society loses hope and progress comes to a standstill. A nation cannot truly develop if its people are afraid to speak the truth. The government and society must protect the rights and freedom of citizens. Freedom should be used responsibly, but no one should be silenced through injustice or fear. It is time to understand that protecting freedom means protecting the future of our nation. I hope your newspaper will highlight this important issue and encourage the authorities to protect the fundamental rights of the people
