  • Why our brain repeats old choices

Have you ever noticed that many people eat the same food for breakfast every day?  Even when they have many other options they often stick to what they already know. Scientists have been trying to understand why people repeat the same choices again and again.  A new study from TU Dresden University in Germany may have found the answer. Researchers analyzed data from more than 700 people from earlier studies.  They found that our past choices strongly influence the decisions we make later. According to the researchers when we choose something repeatedly it slowly becomes a habit.  Once it becomes familiar our brain tends to choose it again even when a better option is available. This habit of repeating past choices can affect many parts of daily life including shopping eating habits and everyday routines. The study suggests that many of our decisions are not completely new. Instead our brain often relies on what worked for us before and simply repeats the same choice.

  • Don’t ignore sprouted potatoes

During the rainy season higher humidity can cause stored potatoes to develop sprouts.  Many people wonder whether these potatoes are still safe to eat or if they should be thrown away. Health experts say the answer depends on the condition of the potato. If a potato has only one or two small sprouts you can remove the sprouts and the surrounding area before cooking it. However potatoes with many sprouts green patches a soft texture or a shriveled appearance should be thrown away. Experts explain that these potatoes may contain higher levels of two natural toxins called solanine and chaconine. In large amounts these compounds can cause food poisoning and lead to nausea vomiting diarrhea stomach pain and other health problems. Sprouting is a natural process but it also shows that the potato is changing. As the sprouts grow the potato uses its stored nutrients loses moisture becomes soft and some of its starch turns into sugar. At the same time the levels of natural protective compounds called glycoalkaloids including solanine and chaconine may increase. These chemicals help protect the potato from insects and disease but can be harmful to people if consumed in high amounts. A study published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology journal in 2002 found that eating potatoes with high levels of solanine may cause nausea vomiting diarrhea and stomach cramps. In more serious cases symptoms such as headache dizziness fever drowsiness changes in heart rate and even nervous system problems may develop within a few hours. Doctors advise seeking medical care if severe or long lasting symptoms appear after eating potatoes. Experts also warn that people with diabetes should avoid heavily sprouted potatoes because some of the starch changes into sugar which may increase the potato’s glycemic index and raise blood sugar levels more quickly. Who should avoid sprouted potatoes? Health experts say young children older adults pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems should not eat sprouted green or spoiled potatoes because they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of these natural toxins. How to store potatoes properly Experts recommend storing raw potatoes in a cool dry and dark place.  They should not be kept in the refrigerator because cold temperatures can turn starch into sugar. When these potatoes are cooked at high heat they may produce higher levels of acrylamide a compound considered potentially harmful. Potatoes should also be stored away from onions as onions can speed up the sprouting process

Jane Austen letter expressing affection for Mansfield Park

A exceptionally rare, handwritten letter by legendary 19th-century British author Jane Austen has sold at auction for over $200,000. It has captivated literary historians and devoted readers across the globe. Written in early 1814, the intimate correspondence offers a fascinating glimpse into Austen’s personal thoughts during the final stages of writing her third major novel, Mansfield Park. The manuscript was acquired by a private collector after a competitive bidding battle. It highlights the enduring allure and profound market value of artifacts connected to Regency-era literature. Austen’s Private Collections In the letter, addressed to her beloved niece Martha Lloyd, Austen speaks with characteristic wit and self-effacing humor about her creative process. She candidly reveals The manuscript was acquired by a private collector after a competitive bidding battle. Austen harbored a quiet, tender affection for her newest heroine, Fanny Price. Scholars note that such direct expressions of emotion regarding her own craft are exceedingly rare in Austen’s surviving correspondence, as her sister Cassandra burned a vast majority of Jane’s personal papers following the author’s death in 1817 to protect her privacy. The document’s remarkable physical condition significantly contributed to its staggering sale price. Preserved in a family archive for generations before briefly passing through private collections, the single-sheet letter features Austen’s distinctively tidy, flowing script written in iron gall ink, complete with original wax seal remnants and postal markings from Chawton, Hampshire. Experts from the auction house confirmed the paper’s authenticity through detailed watermarking analysis, verifying that the sheet originated from a paper mill active in England during the Regency period. The Mid-80s Literary Period Beyond its physical preservation, the letter holds immense literary significance because it captures Austen at a pivotal moment in her career. Having spent years refining her craft in relative obscurity, the mid-1810s marked a period of intense productivity and emerging financial independence. Mansfield Park represented a deliberate artistic departure from the sparkling, lighthearted banter of Pride and Prejudice, diving into deeper moral complexity, social critique, and quiet emotional endurance. Austen’s reflection in this letter reveals her awareness of this shift and her defense of a softer, more gentle protagonist. Appreciation for Literary Heritage   The sale underscores a broader resurgence of interest in 19th-century women writers among modern collectors and readers. As public appreciation grows for literary heritage, original items connected to figures like Austen, the Brontë sisters, and Mary Shelley have seen exponential value growth at major international auction houses. For admirers of classic literature, this newly highlighted letter serves as a poignant reminder of Austen’s profound human warmth, proving that centuries later, her words continue to move hearts just as powerfully as her immortal fiction.

  • Parents stress linked to giving children smartphones

Many parents give smartphones to their children and a major reason behind this behaviour has now been identified. Parents who experience stress tend to give their children devices to keep them occupied or calm while also being less likely to enforce limits on screen time. A study conducted by the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University included 822 parents raising children between the ages of 4 and 8. The participants provided information through online surveys about their children’s behavior, parental stress and screen-time habits. The findings showed that parents tend to allow their children to use smartphones for longer periods when their children’s behaviour becomes difficult to manage. Researchers said parents should not hesitate to seek support for managing their own stress. They also advised parents to set limits on children’s screen time and provide them with purposeful, age-appropriate content. They emphasized that parents should establish appropriate boundaries and spend quality time with their children to promote a healthy environment. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on children’s excessive smartphone use. A study published in January 2026 explored links between online content and problems related to children’s development. Similarly, research published in BMC Public Health in October 2024 found that spending excessive time in front of screens can have negative effects on mental health. The risk of depression, anxiety, irritability and other problems was particularly higher among children aged 9 and 10. The research found that the more time children spent in front of screens, the more severe their symptoms of depression tended to be. According to the study, activities such as video chatting, watching videos and playing video games were associated with a greater increase in this risk.

  • Too much salt? Try these simple tricks

Salt is one of the most important ingredients in cooking because it brings out the flavor of food.  A small change in spices may not make much difference but too little salt can make a dish taste bland while too much can ruin its flavor. Adding salt to food is easy when it is needed. But if you accidentally add too much salt you may think the whole dish is ruined.  Fortunately there are several simple kitchen tricks that can help reduce the strong salty taste and save your food. Add a Potato If your curry or another dish has too much salt take a raw potato cut it into two pieces and add it to the food. Let it cook for about 10 minutes and then remove it.  A boiled potato can also be used. If you prefer you can leave the potato in the curry and serve it with the dish. Use fresh cream Fresh cream can help make a salty dish taste milder. Add a small amount of cream to the curry or other suitable dishes and mix well.  It can reduce the strong salty taste while also making the food smoother and richer. Try a dough ball A small ball of flour dough is another traditional home method. Make a small dough ball and place it in the curry.  Leave it for around 15 minutes and then take it out. This may help reduce the salty taste of the dish. Add water or milk For dishes that can handle extra liquid adding a little water can reduce the salty taste.  Milk or cream can also work well in some recipes. Milk can make the flavor softer and more balanced. Use yogurt and fried onion Yogurt and fried onions can also help balance the taste especially in dishes such as meat curry karahi, or mixed vegetables. Grind some browned onions with yogurt and mix them into the dish. This can make the strong salty flavor less noticeable while adding extra taste. Add salt slowly The best way to avoid overly salty food is to add salt little by little while cooking. Taste the food before adding more.  This simple habit can help you control the amount of salt and keep your dishes flavorful. Using less salt overall is also better for general health. So instead of adding a large amount at once add small amounts gradually and adjust the taste as needed.
