Why Safe Migration Begins with Information

Imagine a young Pakistani sitting in a village in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Sindh, scrolling through his phone. He sees an attractive job offer for Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the UAE—or even an IT position in Southeast Asia. The salary is impressive, accommodation is promised and the visa will supposedly be arranged within weeks. A WhatsApp number is provided, and someone in his community has already shared the opportunity.

He has ambition, perhaps a degree or technical skills. What he may not have is reliable information.

This information gap can turn an aspiration for overseas employment into financial loss, irregular migration, exploitation, human smuggling or even trafficking.

For Pakistan, this is an increasingly important challenge. Overseas employment is a lifeline for millions of Pakistani families, supporting children’s education, access to healthcare, improved living standards and household economic security, while remittances make a vital contribution to the national economy. At the same time, rapidly changing global labour markets are creating new opportunities beyond traditional destinations. Yet, as these opportunities grow, so do the risks of fraudulent recruitment, misinformation, disinformation, human smuggling and trafficking. Ensuring that Pakistanis can access authentic and accurate information, guidance, verify employment opportunities and make informed decisions is therefore essential to turning migration aspirations into safe and dignified and productive employment opportunities.

A fake job advertisement, misleading social media post or fraudulent agent can create a false impression of employment and migration opportunities. Misinformation may be shared unknowingly, while disinformation is deliberately designed to deceive. For prospective migrants, however, the consequences can be equally serious.

The risks are particularly concerning for young, educated, and IT skilled Pakistanis. In parts of Southeast Asia, deceptive job advertisements and promises of visit visas that are later claimed to be convertible into work visas have reportedly been used to lure individuals into situations involving human trafficking for forced criminality, where victims may be coerced into participating in online scams and other criminal activities. What initially appears to be a lucrative employment opportunity can therefore become a pathway to exploitation, coercion and serious harm.

In the migration journey, information is not just knowledge, it is protection.

Before accepting any overseas opportunity, prospective migrants should ask: Is the employer genuine? Is the recruiter authorised? Is the visa appropriate for the job? Is there a written employment contract? Are the salary and working conditions clear? What are the actual costs? Most importantly, where can this information be verified?

The principle should be simple: check before you trust, verify before you pay and consult before you travel.

To make an informed decision, prospective and intending migrants should first verify job offers and recruitment arrangements from the Bureau of Emigration & Overseas Employment and its field offices, the Protectorates of Emigrants, while seeking information, guidance and referral from Government departments, Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs) Pakistan and other recognised migration information and counselling services before paying, signing or travelling. These sources can help migrants understand legal/ regular migration pathways, recruitment procedures, employment contracts, workers’ rights and available complaint mechanisms.

Before making a migration decision, understand the process and seek guidance. Consult relevant sources before paying an agent, signing documents or travelling—a few minutes of verification can prevent years of financial and personal consequences.

However, information alone is not enough. Safe migration also requires quality skills, reskilling and upskilling. International labour markets increasingly demand technical competencies, language skills, digital literacy and recognised qualifications. TVET institutions and universities should therefore align training with genuine labour-market demand and equip young people with both occupational and migration-related knowledge.

A skilled worker who cannot identify a fraudulent opportunity remains vulnerable. Conversely, reliable information without relevant skills can leave genuine opportunities beyond reach. Skills and information must therefore go together.

A comprehensive approach to migration must move beyond simply facilitating departure. Safe migration requires informed preparation before departure, protection during employment and support upon return, supported by strong coordination among government institutions, international organization, civil society organizations, Pakistani missions abroad, bilateral agreements with destination countries, training providers, employers, recruiters, universities, and migration information and counselling services.

The message to young Pakistanis should be clear:

Do not migrate on the basis of a social media post, WhatsApp message or an agent’s promise. Seek information, consult the relevant authorities, verify the opportunity, acquire the required skills and follow the legal and regular migration pathway.

Migration should be a pathway to opportunity—not a pathway to exploitation.

In today’s information environment, knowing where to seek information, whom to consult and what to verify before migration may be as important as the skills required for the job itself.

Safe migration begins long before the airport. It begins with an informed decision.

  • Dogs can read human emotions

    Dogs may understand more than just the words we say. A new scientific study suggests that they can also notice human facial expressions and may recognize different emotions such as happiness, anger fear and sadness. Researchers from the  University of Vienna in Austria studied dogs’ brains to understand how they react to human faces.  Their findings were published in the scientific journal iScience. How the study was done In the first part of the study researchers used MRI scans to study the brains of eight dogs. The group included six Border Collies, one Labrador and one Golden Retriever. The dogs were shown pictures of unfamiliar people with happy or neutral facial expressions. When the dogs saw happy faces certain areas of their brains became more active. These areas are linked to thinking rewards and positive experiences. Researchers found strong activity in areas such as the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus.  The caudate nucleus is connected with the brain’s reward system and may also respond to social rewards. According to senior researcher Laura Cuaya, this suggests that a happy human face may have a positive emotional meaning for dogs even when the person is a stranger. Dogs may tell different emotions apart The researchers then wanted to know whether dogs could also recognize negative emotions. Twelve dogs were shown human faces expressing happiness anger, fear and sadness. Their brain activity was recorded and studied using machine learning methods. The results showed that dogs’ brains reacted differently to angry fearful and sad faces compared with happy faces. The researchers also found different brain activity patterns for each negative emotion. This suggests that dogs may be able to tell these emotions apart rather than seeing all negative expressions as the same. Dogs notice small changes First author Raul Hernandez Perez explained that humans can often understand emotions from very small changes in a person’s face.  Dogs may also pay close attention to these small changes. This ability may help explain why dogs are so good at understanding people. Unlike humans and monkeys dogs did not develop these social skills through the same evolutionary path. Instead thousands of years of living closely with humans may have helped dogs become highly sensitive to our behavior and signals. Interestingly both researchers are not only professional colleagues but also life partners. Their own two dogs, Odin and Kunkun were also part of the study. It is not only about the face The researchers say dogs do not depend on facial expressions alone. They can also notice changes in our voice body movements, behavior and even smell. So when a dog seems to know that its owner is happy worried or upset it may be combining many different signals at the same time. Training dogs for MRI scans The dogs had to receive special training before taking part in the research.  They learned to stay still inside an MRI scanner for short periods. At first they were trained to remain still for only one or two seconds.  The time was slowly increased as they became more comfortable. They were also introduced to the scanner the equipment and the sounds it made.  One of the hardest parts was teaching the dogs that doing nothing was actually their job. The dogs took part voluntarily and could leave whenever they wanted. The study has some limits The study was small and most of the dogs were Border Collies. This breed is known for being intelligent and good at understanding human social signals. Because of this the results may not be the same for every dog breed. More research is needed to find out whether different breeds understand human emotions in different ways. Scientists also want to learn how dogs use these emotional signals in everyday life. The study does not prove that dogs experience happiness sadness or fear in exactly the same way humans do. Scientists cannot directly know what a dog is thinking or feeling. However the brain activity does suggest that human facial expressions carry emotional information for dogs. The bond between humans and dogs goes far beyond simple commands. Dogs can pick up signals from our faces voices movements and behavior. This ability may be one of the reasons why the relationship between people and dogs is so strong.

    An alien planet

    Imagine living on a world where the start of the day and the end of the day aren’t just different times, but entirely different environments. On one horizon, morning arrives in a chilly mist where vaporized rocks might condense into glittering, mineral clouds. On the opposite horizon, evening sets in as a roaring, hyper-heated furnace hot enough to shred water molecules into raw hydrogen and oxygen. This isn’t sci-fi world-building, it is the reality of WASP-121 b, an extreme exoplanet located roughly 850 light-years from Earth. Astronomers analyzing data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have uncovered unprecedented details about this distant world, proving for the first time that its morning and evening twilight zones are fundamentally different from one another. A World Locked in Perpetual Extremes WASP-121 b belongs to a class of cosmic objects known as hot Jupiters: giant gas planets that orbit extraordinarily close to their parent stars. Because of this extreme proximity, the planet is tidally locked. Just as the Moon always presents the same face to Earth, WASP-121 b always presents the exact same hemisphere to its star. One side endures an unrelenting, eternal day with scorching temperatures topping 2,500 degrees Celsius (4,500 degrees Fahrenheit). The opposite side faces permanent night, staring into cold space. For years, astrophysicists hypothesized that the narrow transition zones between day and night. The planet’s terminators might harbor complex, asymmetrical weather patterns. However, confirming this required measuring subtle variations in starlight as the planet passed in front of its star. How Jet Streams Reshape Alien Skies Using JWST’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), researchers tracked how starlight filtered through different parts of WASP-121 b’s atmosphere. The findings revealed a dramatic contrast between the morning transition and the evening transition. The driver behind this strange weather is a planetary-scale jet stream. Superheated air on the dayside doesn’t stay still; it rushes toward the cooler nightside at extreme speeds. Because the planet rotates toward the east, these violent winds carry thermal energy around the globe and dump the bulk of that heat directly into the evening region. As a result, WASP-121 b’s evening atmosphere grows significantly hotter than its morning counterpart. Heat causes gases to expand, puffing up the evening sky like a inflated balloon. When starlight filters through this swollen atmospheric layer, it reveals an environment so fierce that water molecules cannot survive intact. Clouds of Metal and Torn Molecules In the searing furnace of the evening sky, chemical bonds break. Water vapor brought in from the dayside is torn apart by the heat, leaving behind a sky depleted of chemical stability. As those same winds continue their journey around the cold nightside, the atmosphere gradually cools down. By the time the air sweeps around to form the morning twilight, the story flips. Here, temperatures drop enough for chemical compounds to reassemble. Scientists suspect that in this cooler morning zone, minerals such as silicates condense out of the gas phase. Instead of water clouds like those on Earth, WASP-121 b’s morning sky likely features reflective clouds made of liquid rock or iron droplets. These metallic clouds block radiation from deeper layers, making the morning side appear even cooler to space observatories. A New Era of Exoplanet Meteorology Until recently, studying alien worlds meant treating entire planets as single, uniform points of light. This discovery demonstrates that modern space telescopes can resolve climate dynamics across distinct regions of a world hundreds of light-years away.   By capturing the contrast between a planet’s morning and evening, astronomers are moving from simply discovering exoplanets to mapping their active weather systems. WASP-121 b may be far too hostile for life as we know it, but understanding its violent atmospheric currents brings us one step closer to reading the skies of smaller, cooler, and potentially habitable worlds in the future.

    Eating more plant based foods may benefit several areas of health including digestion the immune system metabolism and heart health. New research is helping scientists understand how foods from plants interact with the bacteria in our gut and influence the way our body processes nutrients. Gut bacteria play an important role One important reason plant based foods may be beneficial is their effect on the gut microbiome the large community of bacteria living in the digestive system. Dietary fiber is especially important. Gut bacteria break down fiber and turn it into different compounds that can affect the body in various ways. Plant chemicals may also help Plants contain natural chemicals called phytochemicals. These compounds help plants protect themselves from environmental stress.  When people eat plant foods these chemicals may also have different effects inside the body. What did the new studies find? Two studies led by researchers associated with Princeton University provided new information about the connection between diet, gut bacteria and metabolism.  One study was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences while the other appeared in Nature Metabolism. The first study found that plant based fiber and certain plant proteins can change how gut bacteria process nutrients.  These changes may increase some helpful metabolic compounds while reducing certain potentially harmful ones. The second study found that some metabolic compounds previously thought to be produced mainly by gut bacteria can also be made in significant amounts by mammals themselves. Why this research matters Researchers are increasingly interested in using the gut microbiome and the compounds it produces to improve health.  However scientists first need to understand exactly how different parts of our diet affect specific gut bacteria and the substances they produce. Future health benefits These findings could eventually help researchers develop better dietary strategies and treatments aimed at supporting a healthy gut microbiome. In the future this may make it possible to use food choices more effectively to encourage the production of beneficial compounds in the body.

  • Rabi ul Awwal to begin on August 15

    The moon for Rabi ul Awwal 1448 AH was not sighted in Pakistan. As a result the first day of Rabi ul Awwal will be on Saturday, August 15, while 12 Rabi ul Awwal will fall on Wednesday August 26. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has also issued an official notification. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee held a meeting in Islamabad on Thursday to look for the new moon. The meeting was chaired by Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad. Meetings of zonal Ruet-e-Hilal committees were also held in different parts of the country. After the meeting Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad announced that no reliable moon sighting was reported from anywhere in Pakistan. Therefore Rabi ul Awwal will begin on August 15. Rabi ul Awwal is the third month of the Islamic calendar and has special importance for Muslims. 12 Rabi ul Awwal is observed as Eid Milad-un-Nabi ﷺ across Pakistan. On this occasion people arrange gatherings Quran recitation, Naat sessions, and Durood-o-Salam. Mosques, homes and streets are also decorated. Religious scholars use the occasion to remind people about the life, character teachings and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They emphasize that the true message of the occasion is to follow his teachings and bring his good example into daily life.

They add extra flavor and nutrients to the broth. •Mix them into lentils and vegetables Add chopped coriander stems to the tempering with cumin garlic and other spices. This simple step can make lentils and vegetable dishes taste even better. Use them in marinades Blend the stems with ginger, garlic yogurt and spices to make a marinade for chicken fish meat or paneer. They help add a fresh herbal taste to the food. •Add them to chutneys and yogurt dips Blend coriander stems with mint garlic yogurt or roasted chickpeas to make a thick and flavorful chutney or dip that goes well with snacks and meals. If you have extra coriander stems wash and dry them then chop and store them in an airtight container or freezer bag. They can stay fresh in the freezer for several weeks and can be added directly to cooked dishes whenever needed. Experts say using coriander stems is a simple way to reduce food waste save money and add more flavor and nutrients to everyday meals.

    Have you ever opened the fridge looked inside for a few seconds closed it without taking anything and then returned a short time later to do the same thing? If so you’re not alone. Psychologists say this habit is usually not caused by hunger.  Instead it is often linked to the way the brain responds to boredom routine and the search for something enjoyable. Experts explain that when people feel bored or mentally tired the brain looks for something that brings quick pleasure.  Foods high in sugar fat or salt can create a temporary feeling of comfort and satisfaction. As a result people may walk to the fridge without even realizing why. Opening the fridge can also become part of a daily routine. After spending time working on a computer or taking a short break many people automatically head to the kitchen even if they are not hungry. Another reason is curiosity. The brain hopes there might be something new or exciting inside such as a favorite dessert leftover food or a snack that was forgotten. Experts compare this behavior to checking a phone again and again for new messages even when you know there may not be any. Psychologists say habits often follow a simple pattern: a trigger a routine and a reward. For example feeling bored or finishing a task can trigger the habit of opening the fridge. Even if no food is eaten the action itself can provide a brief sense of interest or relief. People who work from home or spend long hours alone may be more likely to develop this habit because boredom can sometimes feel similar to hunger. Experts also say the environment plays an important role.  A bright kitchen a fridge that is easy to reach or food that is clearly visible can make people more likely to open the fridge. The next time you find yourself opening the fridge again, ask yourself one simple question “Am I really hungry or am I just looking for something to do?” According to psychologists the answer may surprise you.
