Thai Election Commission Certifies 396 Constituency Seats, Paving Way for Parliamentary Formation

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday officially certified election results for 396 out of 400 constituency seats, following reports from election inspectors confirming that the polls were conducted honestly and fairly, according to MCOT News Agency.

The certification represents a significant milestone in the post-election process, moving the nation closer to convening its next parliamentary session. The EC office submitted the results for approval, with the agency clarifying that the certification of these initial 396 seats does not preclude its authority to investigate any pending or future complaints regarding election fraud or misconduct in the remaining areas.

Certified winners can now collect their official endorsement letters starting Thursday, February 26, to begin the formal registration process at the Secretariat of the House of Representatives. This administrative step allows successful candidates to assume their positions and prepare for the crucial work ahead.

The certification marks a critical step in Thailand’s transition following a period of intense political competition. Under Thai law, the EC must certify at least 95 percent of all 500 parliamentary seats—including both constituency and party-list members—within 60 days of the election to allow the first session of Parliament to convene. This session is vital for the nomination and eventual selection of the country’s next Prime Minister.

With 396 constituency seats now certified, attention turns to the remaining four constituency seats still under review, as well as the 100 party-list seats that will complete the 500-member House of Representatives. The EC continues its work to ensure the integrity of the electoral process while balancing the statutory timeline requirements essential for the smooth transition of government.

    Security forces have stepped up intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the Azm-e-Istehkam campaign, targeting militant hideouts and disrupting terrorist networks in several areas over the past two months, according to security sources. Officials said one of the major operations was carried out in the Khatti Killi area of North Waziristan, where security forces raided suspected militant hideouts following intelligence reports. During the operation, several terrorists were killed after an exchange of fire, while others sustained injuries and managed to flee. Security sources said troops recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition and communication equipment from the militants’ hideouts. The recovered material is expected to assist investigators in tracing the activities and support networks of militant groups operating in the region. According to officials, the operations specifically targeted members of Fitna al-Khawarij, the term used by the state for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Authorities said the campaign was conducted with great care to protect civilians and prevent damage to local communities. Security officials emphasised that the ongoing operations are aimed at eliminating terrorist threats, restoring law and order, and ensuring lasting peace across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They reaffirmed that intelligence-led operations would continue until militant networks are dismantled and terrorism is eradicated. The latest operations are part of the broader Azm-e-Istehkam strategy launched to strengthen counterterrorism efforts nationwide. The campaign focuses on targeted intelligence operations against militant groups while enhancing the security of vulnerable areas. Last week, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said security forces had carried out more than 40,000 intelligence-based operations across Pakistan so far this year, with a significant number conducted in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said nearly 194 intelligence-based operations are being conducted daily across the country. According to the military spokesperson, security forces have eliminated more than 2,000 terrorists during 2026, reflecting the intensified pace of counterterrorism operations.

    Voting was suspended at a polling station in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Bhimber district after a clash broke out between workers of two political parties during the first phase of the AJK elections. The incident took place at the Darbar Baba Shadi Shaheed polling station in constituency LA-6 Bhimber. Following the confrontation, polling was halted temporarily. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Abdul Razzaq Chaudhry alleged that workers of an opposing political party started the fight at the polling station. District Returning Officer (DRO) confirmed that a clash had taken place at one of the polling stations at Darbar Baba Shadi Shaheed. According to the official, miscreants snatched a ballot box and set it on fire. The DRO said the ballot box contained 232 votes when it was set ablaze. Returning officials and security personnel are currently present at the polling station. The DRO said legal action would be taken against those involved in disrupting the polling process. Officials have yet to decide whether polling will be held again at the affected polling station. The DRO said a decision on re-polling would be taken later in accordance with the relevant election rules. Apart from the affected polling station, polling is continuing normally at all other polling stations across the constituency. Meanwhile, the DRO also said that former AJK prime minister Anwar-ul-Haq had raised a complaint regarding polling arrangements in constituency LA-7. Officials visited the polling stations where complaints had been received and found that the relevant polling agents were present there.
