Thai Prime Minister Anutin Dissolves House, Calls Snap Election

BANGKOK – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul dissolved the House of Representatives on Thursday, paving the way for an early general election less than three months after taking office. The move follows mounting political pressure, including a threatened no-confidence motion from the opposition.

“I have returned power to the people,” Anutin declared in a Facebook post, shortly after His Majesty the King endorsed the royal decree for dissolution submitted by the prime minister.

Anutin, who leads the Bhumjaithai Party, had previously committed to dissolving the House by the end of January 2026 as part of a political agreement with coalition partners. However, the decision was accelerated after the main opposition People’s Party signaled it would file a no-confidence motion against his minority government.

The immediate trigger was a parliamentary vote earlier Thursday requiring that any future constitutional amendments be approved by at least one-third of senators. Bhumjaithai MPs formed the majority that backed the measure, drawing sharp criticism from the People’s Party.

Natthaphong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People’s Party, called on Anutin to dissolve the House following the vote and announced his party’s intention to pursue a no-confidence motion against the government.

The dissolution comes amid heightened national tension as Thailand remains engaged in a deadly border conflict with Cambodia. The timing raises questions about political stability and governance during a period of military engagement and humanitarian concern along the eastern frontier.

That same city saw some of the earthquake’s most extensive destruction, with entire residential blocks reduced to piles of concrete and twisted metal. Video circulating online captured buildings shaking violently as residents fled into the streets, while separate footage showed a regional airport swaying dramatically during the quake as large sections of ceiling came down around people sheltering inside. Among the most widely shared images online is footage showing the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary shaking and partially collapsing. The cathedral, built in the 1920s, holds the distinction of being Colombia’s tallest cathedral and ranks among the highest neo Gothic churches anywhere in the Americas. The disaster struck just days after Abelardo De La Espriella was sworn in as Colombia’s president, immediately confronting his new administration with a major crisis.     Rain expected across Pakistan amid flood alert

    AJK polls disrupted as clash erupts at Bhimber pol…

    Voting was suspended at a polling station in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Bhimber district after a clash broke out between workers of two political parties during the first phase of the AJK elections. The incident took place at the Darbar Baba Shadi Shaheed polling station in constituency LA-6 Bhimber. Following the confrontation, polling was halted temporarily. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Abdul Razzaq Chaudhry alleged that workers of an opposing political party started the fight at the polling station. District Returning Officer (DRO) confirmed that a clash had taken place at one of the polling stations at Darbar Baba Shadi Shaheed. According to the official, miscreants snatched a ballot box and set it on fire. The DRO said the ballot box contained 232 votes when it was set ablaze. Returning officials and security personnel are currently present at the polling station. The DRO said legal action would be taken against those involved in disrupting the polling process. Officials have yet to decide whether polling will be held again at the affected polling station. The DRO said a decision on re-polling would be taken later in accordance with the relevant election rules. Apart from the affected polling station, polling is continuing normally at all other polling stations across the constituency. Meanwhile, the DRO also said that former AJK prime minister Anwar-ul-Haq had raised a complaint regarding polling arrangements in constituency LA-7. Officials visited the polling stations where complaints had been received and found that the relevant polling agents were present there.
