Thai Police Hunt Canadian and Cambodian Fugitives in Major Romance Scam Case

BANGKOK – Thai police are searching for two foreign suspects after dismantling a transnational romance scam network that allegedly defrauded a Thai single mother of nearly 22 million baht over more than two years. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) announced that 13 suspects have been arrested, while a Canadian and a Cambodian national remain at large, underscoring the cross-border nature of the operation.

International Scam Network Dismantled in Bangkok Raid, 16 Arrested

The case came to light after the victim filed a complaint through the Thai police online reporting system. Investigators revealed she was groomed into an online relationship beginning in 2023 after meeting a man on the ThaiCupid dating website. The conversation later moved to the LINE messaging app, where the suspect posed as a Jordanian single father whose overseas business had failed. He persuaded her to invest with him abroad, promising to relocate to Thailand if the venture succeeded—a tactic used to build trust and prolong the scam.

Between January 2024 and July 2025, the woman transferred money 42 times, losing a total of 21.9 million baht. She contacted authorities after communication dwindled and she suspected deception.

CIB Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nattasak Chawnasit stated that arrest warrants were issued for 17 suspects, including 14 Thai nationals and three foreigners—one Canadian, one Cambodian, and one Swiss. Thirteen suspects have been arrested across nine provinces, while two others were already imprisoned on unrelated charges. The two fugitives still being sought are identified as Mr. Yat, a Canadian, and Mr. Kim, a Cambodian.

All arrested suspects have denied the charges, with some claiming they were only involved in buying and selling digital currency, while others said they were paid by unknown individuals to open bank accounts and install mobile banking apps.

Investigators said bank accounts linked to the network were connected to at least 19 other call-center scam cases, causing additional losses exceeding 36 million baht. Combined with this case, total damages surpassed 58 million baht.

Authorities warned the public against transferring money to people met online or agreeing to investment solicitations without verifying identities. They also emphasized that buying or selling bank accounts or registered SIM cards is a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 500,000 baht.

Thai Police Dismantle Nigerian-Thai ‘Romance 114’ Scam Network in Major Crackdown

“This case shows that the length of online contact is not a reliable measure of trust,” a senior police official said. “Even relationships that last more than a year without meeting in person can hide serious dangers.” Police efforts continue to locate the two remaining suspects and expand the investigation into related fraud cases.

Motorway police told not to check marriage certifi…

Senate Standing Committee on Communications Chairman Senator Pervez Rashid has directed the Motorway Police not to check citizens’ marriage certificates, stressing that the force must maintain its professional reputation. During a committee meeting chaired by Rashid, Senator Saifullah Abro questioned the inclusion of senators’ names in a Motorway Police handout related to a seizure operation. He asked how the police determined that the recovered goods belonged to specific senators. Abro said no individual’s personal actions should be linked to the Senate or its committees. He demanded a clear explanation if any government institution had officially released the names. The IG Motorway Police said the department’s responsibility was to take action based on available information and not comment on individuals or institutions. Rashid questioned the authority under which the Motorway Police checked citizens’ marriage certificates and urged the department to avoid such practices in the future. The meeting also discussed delays in National Highway Authority (NHA) development projects and the allocation of funds. Senator Zameer Ghumro called for the completion of existing projects before launching new ones, while officials said the government was prioritising ongoing schemes. Senator Abdul Qadir raised concerns over delays in releasing funds, saying projects sometimes remain stalled for months. The committee also proposed inviting Planning Commission officials to a future meeting. The committee further discussed a motorway incident under investigation. The IG Motorway Police said officials checked a vehicle in a parking zone and that the inquiry would be presented to the committee after completion. On the seizure of smuggled cigarettes near Chakri, the IG said the Motorway Police conducts operations based on intelligence and information provided by Customs authorities. Officials from the Ministry of Communications also told the committee that the government provides loans to the NHA rather than direct funding. They said the NHA’s outstanding debt has reached around Rs3.7 trillion and the authority pays interest on the loans.

    PML-N challenges Rathore’s victory in AJK consti…

MUZAFFARABAD: PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz has challenged the election result of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s LA-17 Haveli-Kahuta constituency, alleging irregularities in the compilation of results and seeking a recount of votes. The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has accepted the petition for hearing and summoned the relevant parties in Muzaffarabad. Mohsin has alleged that the official result was changed through manipulation of election documents. He claimed that results received from polling stations showed him winning the constituency by a significant margin. According to his claim, the results compiled by presiding officers showed him leading by around 8,600 votes. He alleged that there was a substantial discrepancy between those results and the figures later submitted to the returning officer. The PML-N candidate said he had approached the returning officer and requested a recount but his request was rejected. He has also called on PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to support a recount. Mohsin said he would leave politics if a transparent recount showed that he had not won the constituency by a substantial margin. The disputed constituency was won by PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, according to the officially issued result. Form-27 showed Rathore securing 33,872 votes, while Mohsin Aziz received 32,354 votes. Independent candidate Tariq Saeed stood third with 12,538 votes. Mohsin has disputed these figures and alleged that the result was altered after the polling process. He also alleged that armed individuals intimidated voters at some polling stations during election day. He claimed tensions increased after the rival camp realised that it could face defeat. The PML-N candidate has vowed to pursue the matter through the electoral process and said he would not accept what he described as an attempt to deprive him of his mandate. The election commission’s decision to hear the petition has formally brought the disputed result before the relevant electoral forum. The proceedings will determine whether a recount or any further action is warranted. Political tensions in the constituency have also continued following the election. Several vehicles parked along a roadside in Hoter village were reportedly vandalised. Local residents said the windows of the vehicles were smashed during an alleged attack. The vehicles were reportedly parked outside the residence of senior PPP leader Zahid Hashmi, who is also president of the International Kashmir Peace Forum Europe. According to local sources, individuals associated with the PML-N and an independent candidate were allegedly involved in the incident. The allegations have not been independently verified. Some of the affected vehicles reportedly belonged to people who had travelled from Saudi Arabia to participate in the election. The affected individuals alleged that, besides damaging their vehicles, the attackers took passports and cash from some of them.

KP CM denies forming Imran release force

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has told the Federal Constitutional Court that no “PTI founder release force” was ever established, describing the initiative instead as a peaceful movement for the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan. Afridi submitted an eight-page response in the case through the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa advocate general. The response was filed after the Federal Constitutional Court sought his position on a petition challenging the alleged formation of the so-called release force. In his response, the chief minister said the actual initiative was the Release Peace Movement, which he described as peaceful, unarmed and voluntary. He maintained that the movement had no armed structure or military component. Afridi further argued that the constitutional petition was politically motivated and based on misrepresentation of facts. He said the petition was premature, hypothetical and therefore not maintainable. According to the chief minister, the petitioner had also failed to establish any violation of fundamental rights. Afridi said the Release Peace Movement was protected under Articles 16, 17 and 19 of the Constitution. These provisions relate to freedom of assembly, freedom of association and freedom of speech and expression. He also argued that Article 256 of the Constitution, which concerns private military organisations, had no relevance to the movement. The KP chief minister maintained that the Private Military Organisations Act, 1973 was also not applicable to the Release Peace Movement. He rejected allegations that the initiative posed a threat to public order. He described such claims as baseless and said comparisons between the movement and armed organisations of the past were misleading. Afridi asked the court to dismiss the constitutional petition at the preliminary stage. He also requested the court to declare the Release Peace Movement constitutional and lawful. The case comes amid political controversy over claims that the KP government or PTI supporters were preparing an organisation to campaign for Imran Khan’s release. Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had previously criticised the KP government over the issue, alleging that it could establish a release force for the PTI founder while remaining silent against militants. The Federal Constitutional Court has scheduled the next hearing of the petition for July 29.
