Thailand Eyes New Tourist Fee and Huge Travel Subsidy to Boost Local Economy

BANGKOK – Thailand is getting ready to shake up its travel sector with two major new policies. Starting this September, the country plans to launch a massive domestic travel subsidy program. Furthermore, government officials are also looking at a brand-new fee for foreign visitors arriving in the country.

The primary goal is to grow the economy while carefully protecting local environments and smaller communities. During a recent official meeting, the Tourism and Sports Minister shared these exciting new updates. He explained that these progressive moves will heavily support small businesses and keep international tourists safe.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand plans to roll out a massive domestic travel subsidy called “Thai Travel Thai Plus” in September.
  • A newly proposed fee for foreign tourists will significantly help fund safety measures, new attractions, and nature restoration.
  • The domestic travel subsidy offers up to a 50 percent match on personal spending, strictly capped at 3,000 baht.

The new domestic subsidy is officially called “Thai Travel Thai Plus,” and it sounds very promising for locals. It actively aims to give local travel a massive financial boost during the typically quieter green season. Consequently, the government has already set aside a preliminary budget of 1.75 billion baht for the project.

This exciting new program will provide exactly 500,000 travel grants directly to local Thai travelers across the country. It essentially acts as a simple co-payment system, successfully covering 50 percent of eligible spending for participants. The state will generously pay up to 3,000 baht for each grant, and people can claim up to five grants.

Expanding Support for Local Travel Businesses

To spread the wealth, officials also plan to increase the value of extra travel vouchers from 500 to 1,000 baht. Originally, these special government vouchers were exclusively meant for eating out at local neighborhood restaurants. Now, eager travelers can easily use them for car rentals, local guides, and buying authentic community goods.

According to a recent report by The Nation, this crucial shift will push money toward smaller business operators. The government optimistically expects the four-month plan to create well over 26 billion baht in local economic spending. If it works well initially, the state might officially extend the program for several more months.

By expanding the strict spending rules, the government wants to make absolutely sure tourists spend money everywhere. They sincerely hope that domestic visitors will explore lesser-known areas instead of just sticking to the big sprawling cities. Ultimately, this clever strategy helps distribute the wealth fairly among rural villages and smaller tourism companies.

Introducing a New Fee for Foreign Tourists

Alongside the local domestic subsidy, Thailand is actively proposing a brand-new fee for international travelers entering the country. The money collected from this new charge will go directly into the official Thailand Tourism Promotion Fund. However, government officials have not yet decided on the exact fee amount or an official launch date.

This fresh, innovative revenue stream has three very clear and important developmental goals for the entire country. First, it will significantly help build exciting new attractions in lesser-known areas branded as “Must-Visit Cities.” Second, the collected funds will thoroughly pay for visitor insurance and much better overall safety rules.

Finally, a large chunk of the new money will restore natural sites deeply harmed by heavy tourist traffic. The government desperately wants to make sure popular natural spots stay beautiful for many years to come. Ultimately, this move aligns perfectly with a growing global trend toward responsible and highly sustainable international travel.

Fast-Tracking Future Tourism Growth

Currently, a special government working group is extremely busy finalizing the exact fine print of these new policies. They have strict, clear orders from the government to deliver incredibly quick results within six to twelve months. This dedicated team is highly focused on removing frustrating red tape to help local businesses grow faster.

They desperately want to boost the country’s global competitiveness without having to rewrite major state laws. The overall long-term vision is to ensure that tourism wealth reaches everyday people in rural communities. It is truly an ambitious, bold step toward a much fairer and notably greener global travel industry.

By actively supporting local tourists and taxing foreign arrivals, Thailand truly hopes to strike a perfect economic balance. The exciting coming months will clearly show exactly how these major changes unfold for the whole travel industry. For now, avid travelers and local business owners alike are watching the daily news very closely.

He stated that the Committee would continue working on matters related to illegal tobacco trade and economic losses faced by the country. The main focus of the meeting shifted towards the Federal Board of Revenue’s pending information regarding tax exempted areas. The Committee noted that raw materials worth Rs1120 billion entered tax exempt regions between 2018 and 2026 under exemption arrangements. Members expressed concern that manual tracking systems and a lack of automated verification could create risks of illegal movement of goods into taxable markets. The Committee once again directed FBR to provide complete details of consumption certificates issued against the Rs1120 billion imports and submit tax related information for the tobacco sector, especially regarding Pakistan Tobacco Company and Philip Morris Pakistan Limited. During the meeting, officials also discussed investigations into cigarette theft cases and illegal activities in the tobacco sector. The Federal Investigation Agency briefed the Committee about cigarette theft cases in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Committee also reviewed the investigation regarding senior officials and a tax charge sheet issued against Deputy Commissioner Inland Revenue Fahim Rashid in connection with Paramount Tobacco Company. Another serious matter discussed was the theft of 2,828 cigarette cartons from an FBR warehouse. The cartons were reportedly valued at Rs25 crore. The Committee directed FBR to prepare clear Standard Operating Procedures for registering, handling and managing seized goods to prevent such incidents in the future. The Committee also examined concerns related to cigarette smuggling and tax losses, stressing that illegal trade not only affects government revenue but also creates unfair competition for legal businesses. The meeting also discussed government advertisement spending and tobacco industry media campaigns. The Committee reviewed information provided by the Press Information Department and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority and stressed the need for greater transparency in advertisement payments and media related spending. The meeting was attended by Senators Umer Farooq, Muhammad Talha Mehmood and Dilawar Khan as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Press Information Department, FBR Inland Revenue, Customs, FIA, National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency and other relevant departments. The Committee made it clear that investigations into tax exemptions, tobacco sector irregularities and smuggling networks would continue until complete records and explanations were provided.

Gold prices rise for third consecutive session amid softer US economic data

Gold prices advanced for a third consecutive session on Tuesday as expectations of a US interest rate hike in the coming months weakened, while investors turned their attention to the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting for indications about the future direction of monetary policy. Spot gold gained 0.2% to $4,424.28 per ounce by 0130 GMT. US gold futures for December delivery also increased 0.2%, reaching $4,480.90 per ounce. The precious metal has received support from growing expectations that the US Federal Reserve may maintain its current interest-rate stance following a series of weaker-than-expected economic indicators. The US dollar remained close to multi-month lows against a basket of major currencies, providing additional support to gold and other dollar-denominated commodities. A weaker greenback generally makes gold more affordable for buyers holding other currencies, potentially boosting demand in international markets. IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said gold’s recent advance was being supported by softer US economic data released last week. The data has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could leave borrowing costs unchanged rather than move towards another rate increase. Gold typically benefits from lower interest rates because the metal does not generate interest or dividends. When yields on interest-bearing assets decline, the opportunity cost of holding bullion becomes comparatively lower, making gold more attractive to investors. According to a recent Reuters poll of economists, most analysts expect the US central bank to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its next meeting and maintain the rate through the end of the year. Market expectations have also shifted significantly. The probability of a quarter-point rate increase in September has fallen sharply, with traders now assigning nearly a 65% probability that the Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged. The change followed unexpected job losses in July, softer-than-anticipated consumer price inflation and weaker retail sales data. Investors are now closely watching the release of the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes, scheduled for Wednesday. The minutes could provide further insight into policymakers’ views on inflation, employment and the timing of any potential future rate adjustments. Geopolitical developments are also contributing to demand for gold as a traditional safe-haven asset. Sycamore said bullion appeared to be regaining some of its safe-haven appeal despite higher bond yields, particularly amid renewed tensions surrounding Iran and the United States. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran would move towards a “fully offensive” military posture after efforts to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict with Washington stalled. The development came as the United States ruled out extending a temporary ceasefire arrangement, adding to uncertainty in financial markets. Higher geopolitical risks can encourage investors to increase exposure to traditionally defensive assets such as gold, particularly when uncertainty surrounding economic and monetary policy is already elevated. Other precious metals also recorded mixed movements during Tuesday’s session. Spot silver climbed 0.9% to $66.40 per ounce, extending gains in the broader precious-metals market. Platinum edged 0.2% higher to $1,772.75 per ounce, while palladium moved in the opposite direction, declining 0.3% to $1,330.05 per ounce.

PM Shehbaz directs timely implementation of privat…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed all relevant ministries and institutions to ensure the timely implementation of targets and deadlines under the government’s privatisation programme, stressing the need for close coordination to complete the process according to schedule. The directives were issued during a meeting held to review progress on the privatisation of state-owned enterprises. The meeting was informed that a total of 27 public sector organisations have been included in the government’s privatisation agenda, which is being carried out in three phases. During the briefing, officials updated the prime minister on the progress of the privatisation of Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi airports, as well as several major public sector entities. The meeting also reviewed the privatisation process of electricity distribution companies, including the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), and Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO). Officials informed the prime minister that Expressions of Interest (EOIs) have already been invited for all three companies. The deadline for investors to submit documents for FESCO has been set for August 7, while submissions for GEPCO will close on August 21. The deadline for IESCO is September 7, 2026. The briefing noted that several international companies have expressed interest in acquiring the power distribution companies. Officials added that roadshows and engagement sessions with potential investors are continuing to attract further investment. Prime Minister Shehbaz also reviewed the proposed privatisation of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) and directed authorities to design the transaction in a way that preserves the bank’s vital role in supporting Pakistan’s agricultural sector. He emphasised that the bank should continue providing agricultural loans and financial services to farmers even after privatisation. The prime minister said farmers’ access to financial resources is essential for increasing crop yields and improving agricultural productivity. He further stated that agriculture remains a key pillar of Pakistan’s economy and plays a critical role in ensuring food security. Therefore, any privatisation model should safeguard the sector’s long-term interests while maintaining uninterrupted financial support for farmers.
