The hallucination trap – information convincing but factually incorrect

When you ask an AI chatbot a question it does not know the answer to, an odd thing can happen: instead of hesitating or saying, “I am not sure!” it confidently delivers a tidy, well-structured, completely fabricated response—often with fake citations, fictional figures, and an authoritative tone. This phenomenon is known as the ‘hallucination trap ’, and it may be the most significant barrier between trust and artificial intelligence.

I was introduced to the term “AI hallucination” for the first time in the workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). I learned that a “hallucination” occurs when a language model produces information that sounds convincing but is factually incorrect or completely made up. Examples include inventing a legal case that never existed, citing a research paper that doesn’t exist or boldly misrepresenting a historical date. What is disturbing is not merely that AI can be wrong-humans make mistake too- but rather the way it presents that incorrect information with clearly, confidence and without a trace of doubt.

Large language models are essentially highly complex pattern predictors trained to produce the most likely next word in a sequence. As a result, when a model has encountered a topic thousands of times in its training data, the predictors are typically accurate. However, when it comes across a gap, an unidentified fact or a question at the outer edge of its knowledge, it doesn’t shift into a hesitant mode. Instead, it continues doing exactly what it was trained to do: generate a logical, fluent piece of writing, producing a response that is structurally sound and grammatically correct but based on nothing.

In human communication, confidence is generally perceived as a sign of strength which is important. We naturally prefer to trust a calm, reliable voice over a hesitant one. AI systems unintentionally exploit the tendency because their language remains confident whether they are right or wrong.

The risks increase with the use of AI, as students may unintentionally include false information into their work and journalists have published articles citing artificially created sources and quotes, negatively affecting the credibility of their publications. Such inaccuracies influence what millions of people see, believe or share, thereby amplifying fabricated content.

The reason AI does not simply say “I don’t know” is partly due to the way these systems are trained. Many models are designed to provide helpful, comprehensive-sounding answers and are rarely rewarded for expressing doubt during training. This means that a model that frequently acknowledges uncertainty may be judged as less helpful than one that consistently provides an answer, even when that confidence is occasionally misplaced. Such incorrectly aligned incentives arise when the training process gradually teaches the model that sounding confident is more valuable than being accuracy.

Retrieval-augmented generation, which relies on responses in actual, verifiable records rather than internal memory alone, improved training techniques that explicitly account for uncertainty; and systems built to simply cite sources. So, users can independently verify claims are just a few of the ways developers are using to addresses this problem.

While none of these solutions fully eliminate hallucination yet, taken together they represent a major shift from blind confidence toward earned trust. The most dangerous outcome is not an AI that makes mistakes but a culture of users who stop questioning because the system always sounds so sure of itself.

 

Therefore, until AI becomes more reliably aware of it own limitation, part of the responsibility falls on the people who use it: treating AI-generated output as a starting point rather than an endpoint, cross checking important facts against credible sources. In the end, the hallucination trap serves as a reminder that illusion is not the same as truth. As AI becomes increasingly common in education, digital media and everyday life, understanding why it occasionally lies with confidence is not only a technical curiosity but also a fundamental aspect of digital literacy. We must strengthen our ability to verify the information provided by AI as they become more persuasive.

For thousands of visitors, seeing Suzi became part of growing up in the city. Children who first encountered her during school trips later returned with their own families, creating memories that crossed generations. Suzi died on May 13, 2017, after suffering from leg-related health problems. Her death left many visitors and zoo workers grieving, particularly those who had known her for years. Today, a monument at Lahore Zoo stands as a tribute to the elephant who once occupied the area. Although her former enclosure has since become home to other animals, including a white rhinoceros and a hippopotamus, the sculpture keeps Suzi’s memory alive. Standing before the monument offers a quiet opportunity to reflect on the connection that can develop between people and animals. In a rapidly changing city, the memorial serves as a reminder of a life that brought happiness to countless visitors. Lahore Zoo remains an important destination for recreation, education and family visits. Yet Suzi’s monument adds another dimension to the experience by preserving a piece of the zoo’s history. Her story demonstrates that animals can become much more than exhibits. They can become part of a community’s memories, childhood experiences and emotional history. Suzi may no longer be present at Lahore Zoo, but her legacy continues through the monument that ensures generations of visitors can remember the elephant who once brought quiet joy to one of Lahore’s most familiar landmarks.     Decoding the genius of Agatha Christie

    When readers open a detective novel by Agatha Christie, they often expect hidden motives and a dramatic reveal. Yet, behind the elaborate plots and suspenseful twists lies something far deeper. It is a masterclass in human psychology. Christie is celebrated globally as the Queen of Crime. However, her legacy rests on her profound grasp of human nature, emotion, and behavior. Beyond “Who [has] done it?” At first glance, a classic crime novel centers on a simple formula: a crime is committed, evidence is gathered, and a perpetrator is exposed. However, Christie’s narratives stand apart because she recognized that every criminal act is fundamentally driven by internal human conditions. It can be jealousy, greed, fear, desperate love, betrayal or pride. Her stories serve as an investigation into what happens when everyday human emotions turn into extraordinary actions. Christie demonstrated that a person’s surface appearance rarely tells the whole story. In her fictional world, a polite neighbor or a charming gentleman could conceal dark secrets. Christie challenged her readers to look beneath pleasant facades and observe the subtle tension between public personas and private motives. A Tale of Two Detectives Nothing illustrates Christie’s psychological acuity better than her two iconic sleuths. The meticulous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and the observant villager Miss Jane Marple. Their methods and personal backgrounds could not be more distinct.  Yet, both figures share an uncanny reliance on psychological insight rather than physical evidence alone. Poirot prioritizes method, order, and intellectual analysis. He famously encourages paying attention to the little grey cells of the brain. Poirot understands that people inevitably reveal their true character through body language and small inconsistencies. Poirot allows suspects to expose themselves by asking precise questions and observing subtle emotional shifts. In contrast, Miss Marple operates from the quiet routine of the small English village of St. Mary Mead. Despite her gentle demeanor and knitted shawls, Miss Marple possesses a sharp mind shaped by decades of watching human behavior in a small community. She operates on the principle that human nature is universal. People react to passion, greed, and fear in remarkably similar ways. Her ability to draw parallels between a suspect’s behavior and local village gossip allows her to solve complex murder cases. The Art of Patience In a fast-paced world where hasty judgments and decisions are common, Christie’s stories offer a lesson in the value of patience, active listening, and careful observation. Her detectives succeed precisely because they resist early conclusions. They listen to what is said and  what is left unsaid. This approach reflects many real-world disciplines, including psychotherapy, journalism, and conflict resolution. So, understanding another person requires suspending immediate judgment and noticing subtle nuances. Christie turns her audience into active participants in a process of empathetic inquiry. For generations of fans, revisiting Christie’s novels or watching cinematic adaptations is more than an intellectual exercise. It is a warm, comforting ritual. Many readers recall discovering her books during youth or sharing screen adaptations with family members. The nostalgic atmosphere of early 20th-century trains, country manors, and seaside resorts provides a captivating backdrop for timeless human dramas. Decades after her death, Agatha Christie remains one of the most widely read authors in human history. Her popularity persists not because audiences simply enjoy detective stories, but because the complexity of human nature never grows old. Her work continues to remind us that behind every smile, silence, or stray comment lies a story waiting to be understood.

    Bed bugs can make it difficult to sleep and may leave red itchy marks on the skin. These tiny insects often hide in beds sofas clothes and other dark places during the day. At night they become active and feed on people. Even a few bed bugs can quickly turn into a bigger problem if they are not treated properly.  While many bed bug sprays are available in stores some people also try simple home methods to control them. Use hot air A hair dryer can be used to blow hot air into cracks corners and other places where bed bugs or their eggs may be hiding.  Heat can kill bed bugs but care is important. Never use a hair dryer near flammable materials. Try mint leaves Bed bugs may dislike strong smells such as mint. Fresh mint leaves can be placed near beds sofas or areas where bed bugs are found. However mint should not be considered a reliable way to kill bed bugs. It may only help make certain areas less attractive to them. Wash bedding in hot water Wash bedsheets pillow covers clothes and other washable items that may contain bed bugs in hot water.  After washing dry them thoroughly using high heat if the fabric allows it. Heat can help kill bed bugs and their eggs and reduce their numbers. Keep the area clean Baking soda is sometimes suggested as a home remedy for bed bugs but there is limited evidence that it can kill them.  Instead of relying on baking soda regularly vacuum mattresses sofas carpets and cracks where bed bugs may hide. If the infestation has become large home remedies may not be enough.  In such cases contacting a professional pest control service is usually a better option.

    Easy dandruff care tips for healthy hair. Along with proper hair care some simple home remedies may help manage dandruff. Neem Neem has been used for many years for skin and hair care. You can make a simple hair mask by mixing crushed neem leaves with yogurt.  Apply it to the scalp for about 20 minutes and then wash it off. Neem is known for its antifungal properties which is why neem oil and other neem based hair products are often used for scalp care. Amla Amla is another popular ingredient in traditional hair care. Mix amla powder with water to make a paste.  You can also add a few basil leaves. Apply the paste to your scalp for around 30 minutes and then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Fenugreek seeds Fenugreek seeds are also commonly used for hair and scalp care. Soak the seeds in water overnight. Grind them the next morning to make a paste and apply it to your scalp. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before washing your hair properly. Choose the right shampoo If dandruff keeps coming back using an anti-dandruff shampoo may be more helpful than relying only on home remedies.  Regular hair washing can help remove excess oil dead skin and flakes from the scalp. Eat a balanced diet A healthy diet is also important for healthy hair and skin. Try to include enough protein, vitamins minerals and healthy fats in your daily meals. When should you see a Doctor? If dandruff becomes severe or causes intense itching redness sores or does not improve with anti dandruff shampoo it is better to consult a dermatologist. In some cases symptoms that look like ordinary dandruff may actually be caused by conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis eczema or another skin problem.

    Android 17 feature may help reduce motion sickness 

    Some people may suddenly experience nausea and dizziness while travelling by plane, train, ship or car. This condition is medically known as motion sickness and people affected by it may experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness and other symptoms. If you are also one of those people who experience dizziness or nausea while travelling in a moving vehicle, you are not alone. Many people around the world experience this problem. Generally, experts advise people suffering from motion sickness to avoid using their phones. However, Google has now introduced a new feature called Motion Assist for Android smartphone users. According to a report by Android Authority, Google has started gradually rolling out this feature. It is part of the Android 17 operating system and is being introduced first for Google Pixel phones. The feature is designed to help reduce the severity of motion sickness while travelling in a vehicle. What causes motion sickness? Motion sickness is a somewhat mysterious condition and its exact cause is not fully understood. However, experts have identified several possible reasons. One thing is clear: motion sickness can occur when our senses send conflicting signals to the brain. For example, if you are sitting on a swing that is moving up and down, your eyes may see one thing, your muscles may sense something else while your inner ear experiences something completely different. The brain may struggle to process these conflicting signals resulting in dizziness or nausea. Experts believe that the inner ear plays an important role in motion sickness because it helps control our sense of balance. The inner ear is part of a network known as the vestibular system which sends information about the body’s movement and surroundings to the brain. The brain combines information from different parts of the body to make sense of what is happening but sometimes these signals can become confusing. For example, while traveling on an airplane, you may feel movement but your eyes may tell your brain that you are sitting still. A similar situation can occur while travelling on a river or at sea. You may be sitting or standing on a stable surface while still experiencing a sensation of movement. Some passengers particularly those sitting away from the driver’s seat in a car can experience the same thing. All of these situations can result in motion sickness. What is Google’s new feature and how does it work? Google has been working on this feature for quite some time. The code for the feature was first spotted in December 2024 and development has continued since then. It has now become part of Android 17. Once the feature becomes available, users will be able to find it by going to Settings then Your Profiles and All Services. From there, users can access the Personal and Device Safety section and enable the feature. Once enabled, Motion Assist will automatically activate when the phone detects that it is inside a moving vehicle. Google will also provide a Motion Assist option in Quick Settings allowing users to manually turn the feature on or off. When the feature is active, users will have several customization options. They will be able to change the colour, appearance and other aspects of the motion indicators. During a journey, motion dots will appear on the screen to help reduce the feeling of nausea. It should be noted that the feature does not guarantee complete relief from motion sickness but it may still prove helpful. Are there other simple ways to prevent motion sickness? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several simple measures may help reduce or prevent motion sickness. These include: Prefer sitting in the front seat of a car or bus. Choose a window seat on an airplane or train. If possible, lie down and close your eyes. Drink plenty of water and avoid tea or coffee. Avoid eating large meals before travelling. Avoid smoking. Distract yourself with activities such as listening to music but avoid reading. Take deep breaths to stay calm or close your eyes and count backward from 100. Look at a stationary object such as looking at the sky while traveling in a vehicle. If available, chewing a small amount of ginger may also help. The smell of mint or using mint candies may also provide some relief.

  • Study links fructose to Cancer spread

    A new scientific study has found that fructose a simple type of sugar may help cancer cells that survive chemotherapy send signals that encourage the disease to spread. Researchers at the Wistar Institute in the United States explained that some cancer cells are not completely destroyed by chemotherapy. These surviving cells stop dividing but remain active. They continue to send chemical signals to nearby cancer cells which may influence how the disease behaves. The study published in the journal Nature Aging suggests that fructose could be one of the substances involved in this signaling process. According to the researchers it may help surviving cancer cells stay active and communicate with other cancer cells. Co-author Aidan Cole said this is one of the first studies to show that a nutrient found in food such as fructose may act as a signaling molecule between cancer cells. Experts say the findings could improve understanding of how cancer returns or spreads after chemotherapy and may help guide future treatments. However they stressed that more research is needed. The study does not prove that eating fructose directly causes cancer to grow or spread.
