Algorithmic moderation and the shadow-ban dilemma

I attended a workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at the Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) last week. During the discussions on digital trust, I remembered that a few months ago, I received a call from a friend who is a small business owner and runs a modest page selling handcrafted candles. She told me that her posts had suddenly stopped getting reaching people. No warning. No explanation. Her engagement dropped overnight, and when she contacted the platform, she received a flat, nonanswer. She wasn’t banned. She wasn’t warned. She was just… quieter. That is essentially the shadow-ban dilemma, and I believe it is one of the least discussed problems of trust in the age of AI.

There is a reason for algorithmic moderation exists. The volume of content shared on a platform daily is far too large to be managed by humans alone. AI systems can now detect hate speech, misinformation, spam, and harassment faster than an entire team of human moderators. Theoretically, this creates a safer and more livable Internet.

But where I differ from current structure is that moderation operates as black box, and the worst offender is shadow banning, silently restricting a user without informing them. If a platform explicitly rejects you, you can appeal, argue, or move on. Shadow-banning removes even the most basic dignity. You face punishment without knowing the charges; you are not shown the evidence and are rarely given any avenues for reclamation.

I genuinely believe that trust is the digital currency. We bring our voices, our business, and our relationships to these platforms, expecting something close to a level playing field, even if imperfect. Shadow-banning violates that implied contract. It assumes the rules are clear while relying opaque algorithms, and doubt becomes corrosive. Users begin to question each drop in engagement. Was it the algorithm? Was it just a bad week? Did I say something wrong? This uncertainty leads to confusion and self-censorship, which is not healthy foundation for a digital public square.

Moreover, the phenomenon of shadow-banning disproportionately effects those without influence, legal support, or the media visibility. A major creator, with millions of followers, may get a quick, individualized explanation when something goes wrong. My friend, the candle-seller, heard nothing. This imbalance is significant if free expression online is to be practiced, not not merely discussed — by everyone.

I don’t believe that the solution is to eliminate moderation entirely. The combination of harassment, spam, and bad-faith users who overwhelm others makes a total freeforall unusable within minutes. As anyone who has used an unmoderated platform knows how quickly it becomes impossible to navigate when spam and abuse take over. When people are constantly shouted down, free expression is not free. However, there is a difference between moderation and invisible moderation. Platforms can reduce the reach of harmful content without disrespecting or degrading the users by withholding explanations. The technology to notify users already exists. What is missing is the will.

In my own re-design of this system, three principles would guide it: A user should be notified, not in a lucky screenshot of a “test” a month later, but in a clear, timely notice to explain the general reason that their content or reach is being limited. It is not theatre; it is meaningful appeal. Many platforms claim to offer appeals, but these are often routed to another algorithm or a human who skims for a few seconds. Real appeal is a true second look with actual power to correct an error. Not all infractions are equal and deserve the same silence and indefinite containment. It is not the same as coordinated harassment campaigns; it is not borderline, or an honest mistake, or satire. There is nothing impossible for this. It is a matter of priorities. Transparency costs platforms something; it exposes them to scrutiny and disagreement.

I am not opposed to algorithmic moderation. Used responsibly, it can make the internet more habitable space for all, particularly for those who are disproportionately targeted by harassment and abuse. However, moderation that is not transparent is not safety; it is control disguised as safety. In a world where artificial intelligence systems increasingly decide who is heard and who is quietly muted, we must hold these systems accountable for their explanations. Platforms that merely claim that they know how to handle moderation, do not build trust. Trust is constructed by showing their work. Shadow-banning is not just a technical issue; it is a question of what kind of digital public square we want to inhabit and whether we will insist on honest, accountable moderation.

Research highlights the importance of effective time management. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), planning tasks and managing time can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Similarly, educational research by Pan et al. (2011) found that strong time management skills are directly associated with higher study engagement and greater achievement of academic goals. In conclusion, productivity and time management are not just useful skills but essential habits for success. By managing time wisely and staying focused on priorities, individuals can accomplish more, reduce stress, and create opportunities for personal and professional growth. Every second is valuable, and learning to manage time effectively is one of the best investments anyone can make in their future.

    AI matchmaking helps hundreds find life partners in Japan

    Tokyo- Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now being used for a wide range of purposes around the world including helping people find a life partner. In Japan, AI-powered matchmaking has already helped hundreds of couples get married. Japan has been facing a decline in marriage and birth rates while its aging population continues to grow. To address this issue, local governments have partnered with private companies to introduce AI-based matchmaking systems. The AI analyzes users personalities, values, interests, hobbies and lifestyle preferences to recommend compatible life partners. An AI-powered matchmaking app was launched in September 2024 to make it easier for people seeking marriage to find a suitable lifelong partner. To use the app, users must provide verified proof of identity, confirm that they are legally unmarried, submit income-related documents and complete an online interview before joining the platform. According to Japanese authorities, the technology has encouraged more people especially young adults to consider marriage. Previously, many young people showed little interest in traditional matchmaking services. Officials say the program has contributed to an increase in marriages in several Japanese cities. Its primary goal is to help boost Japan’s declining birth rate with the government introducing various initiatives to encourage marriage. Experts note that while AI cannot decide relationships on its own, it can help remove barriers and make it easier for people to find compatible life partners.

  • Why Airplanes turn off the AC before takeoff

    Have you ever noticed that the cabin feels warmer just before a plane takes off? Many passengers wonder why the air conditioning seems to stop working at that moment. The reason is not a technical problem it is part of the aircraft’s normal operating procedure. When passengers board the plane the cabin is usually cooled by an external air conditioning system at the airport. This keeps everyone comfortable while the aircraft is parked at the gate. Just before departure the external power and cooling supply are disconnected.  At that point the aircraft switches to its Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) a small onboard engine that provides electricity and cool air until the main engines are fully running. During takeoff pilots need as much engine power as possible to safely lift the aircraft into the air.  To help achieve this some systems that are not essential during takeoff including parts of the air conditioning and climate control system may be temporarily reduced or switched off. This allows more engine power to be used for takeoff instead of running cabin cooling systems. Former American pilot John Cox explains that this short changeover happens because the aircraft moves from ground power to its own power systems. Once the engines are operating normally and the plane reaches a stable stage of flight the air conditioning returns to normal and the cabin quickly becomes comfortable again. So, if the cabin feels a little warm before takeoff there is usually no reason to worry. It is a normal part of the flight process designed to support a safe and efficient departure.

  • Breakfast leads to better food choices

    Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day and a new study supports that idea. Researchers at the University of Texas found that eating breakfast can help people make healthier food choices for the rest of the day. The study included 128 young adults who usually skipped breakfast. They were divided into three groups. One group continued to skip breakfast the second group ate breakfast with 15 grams of protein and the third group had breakfast with 30 grams of protein. After breakfast all participants were free to eat whatever they wanted throughout the day. The researchers found that all three groups consumed about the same number of calories around 2,300 calories per day. However there was one important difference. People who ate breakfast consumed more healthy nutrients including fiber, iron zinc and choline. Those who skipped breakfast were more likely to choose unhealthy foods and got lower amounts of these important nutrients. The study also found that people who ate a high-protein breakfast consumed more protein iron and choline throughout the day than those who had only 15 grams of protein. In addition both breakfast groups ate fewer sugary foods than those who skipped breakfast. Researchers said that eating less sugary and high fat food may help lower the risk of several long term health problems.

  • Jiang Zemin at 100: A Visionary Reformer and a Friend Pakistan Remembers

     August 17, 2026 marked the 100th birth anniversary of Jiang Zemin, one of the most consequential leaders of modern China. A grand commemorative gathering at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, presided over by President Xi Jinping, reflected the enduring importance of Jiang’s political and economic legacy. Jiang Zemin’s life was remarkable because he was, at his core, an engineer who later became a statesman. Born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, on August 17, 1926, he studied electrical engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and graduated in 1947. His technical training shaped a practical approach to leadership: understand the problem, assess the available resources and build a solution capable of lasting. His rise coincided with one of the most turbulent periods in modern history. After serving as mayor of Shanghai and later as secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Jiang played an important role in the city’s reform and modernization. He supported the transformation of Pudong into a major international and modern urban district, helping establish the foundations for Shanghai’s emergence as a global economic center. When Jiang assumed China’s top leadership in 1989, the international environment was changing rapidly. The political transformation of Eastern Europe, the collapse of the Soviet Union and major domestic challenges created enormous uncertainty. Yet China maintained political stability and continued its programme of reform and opening up. One of the defining features of the Jiang era was the consolidation of the socialist market economy, following the strategic direction established by Deng Xiaoping and formally advanced after Deng’s southern tour in 1992. Jiang helped translate this vision into institutional and economic transformation. The result was a period in which China accelerated market-oriented reforms, expanded its engagement with the global economy and strengthened the foundations for the extraordinary growth that followed. China’s accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001 was among the most significant milestones of this period. It opened a new chapter in China’s integration with international trade and investment and contributed to the rapid expansion of Chinese exports and global economic engagement. Jiang’s leadership was also associated with deeper regional cooperation, including the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in 2001. For Pakistan, however, Jiang Zemin was more than a distant Chinese leader. His connection with Pakistan began long before he entered China’s highest office. In 1976, as a professional engineer and leader of a Chinese technical delegation, he spent time at Taxila and was involved in important technical and administrative decisions connected with the commissioning of the Foundry and Forge Works of the Heavy Mechanical Complex. This cooperation formed part of China’s broader contribution to Pakistan’s industrial and engineering capacity. The story of Jiang and Taxila carries special significance. It represents a relationship built not only through diplomatic statements but also through factories, machines, engineers and skilled workers. The Heavy Mechanical Complex became an important symbol of Pakistan-China industrial cooperation, and Jiang’s personal association with it gave Pakistan a unique connection with a man who would later lead the world’s most populous country. During his state visit to Pakistan in 1996, Jiang reportedly maintained contact with former Pakistani colleagues from his earlier days at Taxila, demonstrating that he had not forgotten the professional relationships and human connections formed decades earlier. It would therefore be fair to describe Jiang Zemin as a leader who helped strengthen the modern foundations of China-Pakistan friendship. He was not the founder of the relationship, whose roots go back to earlier generations of leaders, but he was a major bridge-builder who gave that friendship a distinctive personal and industrial dimension. At 100, Jiang Zemin’s legacy remains substantial. He was bold during uncertainty, pragmatic during transition and confident in China’s capacity to reform without abandoning its strategic direction. He understood Deng Xiaoping’s vision and helped carry the reform and opening-up process into a new era. For China, Jiang will be remembered as a major reform-era leader. For Pakistan, he will also be remembered as an engineer who once worked at Taxila, a statesman who valued friendship, and a leader whose life connected the development journeys of two nations. His legacy is not confined to history; it remains visible in the enduring strength of China-Pakistan cooperation. Author: Prof. Engr.   • New image reveal Sun’s surface in amazing detail

    Looking directly at the Sun is impossible and capturing a clear image of it is even more difficult. However, new images of the star at the center of our solar system have been released showing its surface in extraordinary detail. The images were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope located in the US state of Hawaii. It is considered the world’s most powerful solar telescope and is capable of observing the Sun in unprecedented detail. The telescope has captured images of the Sun before but these new photographs provide the most detailed views yet of the surface of our solar system’s star. A unique wing-like pattern can be seen across the Sun’s surface in the images. According to scientists, this pattern is associated with the Sun’s magnetic field which is moving in a wave-like manner due to hot gases. Closer look at Sun’s surface The images reveal processes occurring on the Sun’s surface that may help explain a decades-old mystery: why the Sun’s outer atmosphere known as the corona is millions of times hotter than its visible surface. Experts say these are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured. In earlier observations, the telescope detected sand-like structures on the Sun’s surface making it appear as though grains of sand were being viewed under a microscope. Each of these structures was roughly the size of France in terms of area but the new images reveal much greater detail. The new photographs show a distinctive pattern on the Sun’s surface associated with rapidly moving plasma. Scientists have identified this pattern as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs). Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities have been observed on Earth during the formation of patterns in lakes, oceans and clouds. They have also been detected on Jupiter and Saturn but their presence on the Sun had not previously been confirmed. Why Sun’s magnetic activity matters? Solar activity particularly changes in the Sun’s magnetic fields can affect power grids, satellites, GPS positioning and global communications on Earth. These magnetic fields are generated by the Sun’s extremely hot plasma but scientists have not yet fully understood how they work. Experts know that these magnetic fields can trigger sudden releases of enormous amounts of heat but exactly why this happens remains unclear. The new images, however, provide clues that could help explain why the Sun’s visible surface has a temperature of around 6,000°C while its outer atmosphere can reach temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius.
