The return of physical books in a digital world

When e-readers and digital publishing exploded in the late 2000s, tech prognosticators predicted the rapid demise of the printed book. Paper was deemed inefficient, heavy, and outdated. An analog relic doomed to follow the cassette tape and the encyclopedia into obscurity. Yet, decades into the digital revolution, the physical book has successfully survived. It is thriving, driven by a growing cultural hunger for tactile experiences in an increasingly virtual world.

The persistence of print comes down to a fundamental human reality. Sensory experience matters. A digital screen, no matter how crisp its resolution, flattens every piece of content into the same glass surface. A tweet, a work email, a news alert, and a classic novel all look and feel virtually identical. In contrast, a physical book offers a distinct multi-sensory landscape. The weight of the volume in your hands. The subtle texture of the paper stock. The faint scent of ink and binding glue. Above all, the visual progress of physical pages moving from right to left. Reading a physical book creates an immersive environment that screens simply cannot replicate. British writer Roald Dahl who is known for such classic children’s books as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) and Matilda (1988). His other notable works include James and the Giant Peach (1961), The BFG (1982), and The Witches (1983). He famously said,

So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install a lovely bookshelf on the wall.

Roald Dahl (Roald Dahl was a British novelist, short-story writer, poet, screenwriter, and wartime fighter pilot.)

Moreover, print offers a rare sanctuary from the relentless ping of notifications. Modern digital life is characterized by fragmented attention and constant micro-interruptions. Reading a book on a tablet or smartphone means constantly resisting the urge to check email, glance at social media, or reply to a text message. A physical book possesses no hyperlinks, no pop-ups and no algorithmic distraction loops by default. It demands a single-tasking mindset and offers a meditative refuge from digital fatigue.

There is also a social and aesthetic dimension to the print resurgence. Bookshelves in a home are not just storage units. Rather, they are visual representations of identity, curiosity, and intellectual history. Browsing a physical bookstore or sharing a physical copy with a friend fosters spontaneous community connections that digital files cannot mirror.

e-books certainly offer undeniable convenience for travel and instant access. However, they have become a supplement to print rather than a replacement. Readers are making a conscious choice to slow down. The deliberately disconnect from screens, and hold stories in their hands. The physical book stands high not for some reason of nostalgia. Rather, it fulfills a psychological need that technology has only managed to heighten.

  • Keep your laptop cool

A charger should not be chosen only because its connector fits your laptop. Its voltage, current and power rating must also match the laptop’s requirements. Using a cheap or poor quality charger can cause charging problems and may damage the battery or other components.  In some cases faulty chargers can also create electrical or fire hazards. Do not ignore excessive heat If your laptop becomes unusually hot while charging do not ignore it. High temperatures can reduce battery health and may affect other internal components. Stop demanding tasks for a while, move the laptop to a cooler place and make sure its vents are not blocked.  A good cooling pad may also help in some situations. Avoid heavy work while charging Using a laptop while it is charging is not automatically harmful.  Normal activities such as browsing the internet writing documents or watching videos are usually fine. However heavy gaming 4K video editing or running demanding software can put a lot of load on the processor and cooling system.  If the vents are blocked or full of dust the laptop may become even hotter. Do not regularly drain the battery to zero Repeatedly allowing a modern lithium-ion or lithium polymer battery to reach 0% is generally not the best everyday habit. Try to charge the laptop before the battery becomes completely empty. If the battery percentage seems inaccurate follow the manufacturer’s instructions for battery calibration if that feature or procedure is recommended. Be careful with public charging Avoid using unknown chargers power banks or cables in public places.  Poor quality charging equipment can damage your device while unfamiliar USB connections may also create security and data risks. Keep the laptop clean dust can build up around cooling fans and air vents over time. This can reduce airflow and cause the laptop to heat up. Clean the vents regularly using a suitable cleaning method recommended for your laptop.  Avoid forcing dust deeper into the device. Use a Proper battery and Charger A laptop battery is more than a simple power source. It includes safety features and charging controls designed for a specific device. If the original battery needs replacement choose a compatible good-quality battery from a reliable source rather than using an unverified replacement. If the battery becomes swollen the bottom of the laptop starts to bulge the device suddenly shuts down or it becomes unusually hot stop using it and have it checked by a qualified technician.  Do not try to open or remove a swollen battery yourself. Check the Charging cable The charging cable is just as important as the charger. Do not use a cable that is cut burned damaged unusually hot or has a loose connection. A damaged cable can cause unstable charging and may create electrical or safety risks. Small habits can protect your laptop Charging a laptop is simple but careless habits can slowly affect its battery and overall performance. Using the right charger keeping the device cool avoiding blocked vents and taking care of the battery can help your laptop stay in good condition for longer.

  • Too much TV may speed up brain aging

Spending long hours  watching television may be harmful to your brain over time according to a new study from the United States. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that people who spent more time in front of the TV were more likely to develop brain changes linked to aging and memory problems. The study included more than 1,700 adults with an average age of 53. Participants reported how many hours they watched TV each day. Researchers also performed MRI brain scans at the start of the study and again about 20 years later. After following the participants for more than two decades the researchers found that those who watched the most TV showed greater brain changes associated with aging stroke cognitive decline and dementia. The study also found that these individuals had a smaller volume in brain areas responsible for memory thinking and visual processing compared to people who watched less television. However the researchers noted that not all sitting activities affect the brain in the same way. They said the type of activity matters. Sitting while working reading or doing mentally engaging tasks did not show the same level of negative brain changes as spending long hours watching TV. The researchers explained that people spend nearly half of their waking hours sitting making it important to understand how different activities affect brain health. They also noted that women often combine TV watching with household chores while men are more likely to sit continuously and watch television for long periods. In today’s world many people also use multiple screens at the same time which may further increase the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. The researchers stressed that the study does not prove that watching TV directly causes brain decline. The findings are based on participants’ self reported habits so more research is needed to confirm the link.

  • Natural sugar may help cancer spread, study finds

A new study has revealed that fructose (natural sugar) consumed as part of the daily diet may help certain types of cancer spread throughout the body. According to the study published in the scientific journal Nature Aging, cancer cells that survive chemotherapy do not remain inactive. Instead, they release fructose which activates other cancer cells allowing them to leave their original location and spread to other parts of the body. Experts say that excessive consumption of sugary drinks and beverages containing high levels of fructose may also increase the risk of cancer spreading even in patients who are not undergoing chemotherapy. The study further found that fructose causes changes inside cancer cells that make it easier for them to move from one part of the body to another. The research was conducted on ovarian cancer but experts believe that a similar process could also occur in pancreatic, colorectal and liver cancers.

Android 17 feature may help reduce motion sickness

Some people may suddenly experience nausea and dizziness while travelling by plane, train, ship or car. This condition is medically known as motion sickness and people affected by it may experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness and other symptoms. If you are also one of those people who experience dizziness or nausea while travelling in a moving vehicle, you are not alone. Many people around the world experience this problem. Generally, experts advise people suffering from motion sickness to avoid using their phones. However, Google has now introduced a new feature called Motion Assist for Android smartphone users. According to a report by Android Authority, Google has started gradually rolling out this feature. It is part of the Android 17 operating system and is being introduced first for Google Pixel phones. The feature is designed to help reduce the severity of motion sickness while travelling in a vehicle. What causes motion sickness? Motion sickness is a somewhat mysterious condition and its exact cause is not fully understood. However, experts have identified several possible reasons. One thing is clear: motion sickness can occur when our senses send conflicting signals to the brain. For example, if you are sitting on a swing that is moving up and down, your eyes may see one thing, your muscles may sense something else while your inner ear experiences something completely different. The brain may struggle to process these conflicting signals resulting in dizziness or nausea. Experts believe that the inner ear plays an important role in motion sickness because it helps control our sense of balance. The inner ear is part of a network known as the vestibular system which sends information about the body’s movement and surroundings to the brain. The brain combines information from different parts of the body to make sense of what is happening but sometimes these signals can become confusing. For example, while traveling on an airplane, you may feel movement but your eyes may tell your brain that you are sitting still. A similar situation can occur while travelling on a river or at sea. You may be sitting or standing on a stable surface while still experiencing a sensation of movement. Some passengers particularly those sitting away from the driver’s seat in a car can experience the same thing. All of these situations can result in motion sickness. What is Google’s new feature and how does it work? Google has been working on this feature for quite some time. The code for the feature was first spotted in December 2024 and development has continued since then. It has now become part of Android 17. Once the feature becomes available, users will be able to find it by going to Settings then Your Profiles and All Services. From there, users can access the Personal and Device Safety section and enable the feature. Once enabled, Motion Assist will automatically activate when the phone detects that it is inside a moving vehicle. Google will also provide a Motion Assist option in Quick Settings allowing users to manually turn the feature on or off. When the feature is active, users will have several customization options. They will be able to change the colour, appearance and other aspects of the motion indicators. During a journey, motion dots will appear on the screen to help reduce the feeling of nausea. It should be noted that the feature does not guarantee complete relief from motion sickness but it may still prove helpful. Are there other simple ways to prevent motion sickness? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several simple measures may help reduce or prevent motion sickness. These include: Prefer sitting in the front seat of a car or bus. Choose a window seat on an airplane or train. If possible, lie down and close your eyes. Drink plenty of water and avoid tea or coffee. Avoid eating large meals before travelling. Avoid smoking. Distract yourself with activities such as listening to music but avoid reading. Take deep breaths to stay calm or close your eyes and count backward from 100. Look at a stationary object such as looking at the sky while traveling in a vehicle. If available, chewing a small amount of ginger may also help. The smell of mint or using mint candies may also provide some relief.

Among these luminaries, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan stands out as a unique persona connecting high-art literary satire and immortal Bollywood melodies. This legend was born in 1915 in the historical town of Wazirabad. Khan was an observer of culture. He inherited a formidable poetic pedigree that caused him to be one of the most celebrated humorists and lyricists of his era. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan’s literary inclinations were virtually coded into his lineage. He was related to the renowned journalist and political figure Maulana Zafar Ali Khan. He was raised in an environment saturated with verse and socio-political commentary. Moreover, his mother was a recognized poetess in her own right. She taught him a deep reverence for language and rhythmic expression from an early age. This environment nurtured his inherent talent, allowing him to absorb classical Urdu poetic conventions while developing an understated wit that would define his future work. Before making a name for himself in the cinema, Khan began his journey in print journalism. He contributed prolifically to prominent periodicals and literary magazines of the era. The names included Monthly Alamgir, Weekly Khayyam, Tehzeeb-e-Niswan and Do Phool. His early journalistic writings allowed him to polish his observational skills. Whether analyzing social norms or painting witty portraits of everyday life, his prose stood out for its accessibility and warmth. Later, he transitioned into radio broadcasting. His satirical essays and humorous poems were regularly featured in leading newspapers and journals across both India and Pakistan. His humor was rarely cynical. Instead, it offered a gentle, witty critique of human flaws, societal absurdities, and the complexities of modern living. Khan proved that high literary craft could flourish alongside popular music. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan passed away leaving behind a rich archive of literary contributions and cinematic songs that continue to be sung, reimagined, and loved today. His life journey from the quiet streets of Wazirabad to the recording studios of Bombay embodies the shared cultural heritage of the Indian subcontinent. Why young minds internalize being a burden

When a child begins to internalize the belief that their presence is an obstacle, the transformation rarely happens in an explosive moment. Instead, it is a gradual, quiet erosion of their sense of self-worth. Recent reports surrounding youth mental health have drawn urgent attention to how children absorb socio-economic pressure, domestic tension, and emotional distress. The youth has convinced themselves that their families would simply be better off without them. Psychological research identifies a specific mindset known as perceived burdensomeness. It’s the distorted cognitive belief that one’s existence imposes an unmanageable drain on loved ones.  Adults often process household stress out loud through financial worries or fatigue. However, children are acute observers but poor interpreters of these adult struggles. When young minds witness prolonged arguments over money, household strain, or family burnout, they frequently externalize the blame onto themselves. Rather than recognizing systemic or situational issues, a child’s natural self-referential worldview leads to a heartbreaking conclusion. If I weren’t here, my parents wouldn’t be so stressed. Triggers for Emotional Withdrawal in Children  Hearing constant worry over basic living costs or healthcare expenses. Feeling as though love or acceptance is tied strictly to high achievement or complete emotional compliance. When overwhelmed caregivers unintentionally treat basic parenting duties as exhausting chores. Receiving persistent feedback that their emotional or physical needs are too much to handle. How Burden Beliefs Manifest in Everyday Behavior Unlike adults, who might voice feelings of worthlessness directly, children express this weight through shifts in conduct. Identifying these subtle indicators early can make the difference between early intervention and severe psychological crisis. From Obligation to Belonging Addressing this internal crisis requires shifting household culture from transactional survival to unconditional emotional safety. Child mental health advocates emphasize that reassurance must go beyond simple verbal praise. It requires active, structural validation within the home. A child needs to know that their value isn’t dependent on their convenience to adults. Love is not a debt they owe back to the family, but a foundation they stand upon. Explicitly reassure children that adult challenges such as bills, jobs, or adult relationships are strictly the responsibility of grown-ups. Validate their requests for help, space, or care as healthy and welcome parts of growing up. Spend unhurried, non-evaluative time together where no performance or chore is expected. Rebuilding a child’s foundational sense of belonging takes consistency, but by recognizing the early signals of perceived burdensomeness, parents and educators can intervene before silence turns into deep-seated trauma.
