Train Collision in Spain Kills 45, Injures Dozens, Two more derailments on Tuesday 20th

MADRID – Spain is mourning after a high-speed train collision in the southern region of Andalusia killed at 45 people and injured dozens on late Sunday, in one of the country’s deadliest rail disasters in recent decades.

The crash occurred near Adamuz when a train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and crossed onto the opposite track, colliding with an oncoming service heading to Huelva. Both trains derailed, with some carriages tumbling down a four-meter embankment. About 300 passengers were aboard the Málaga–Madrid service alone.

Emergency crews worked through the night in difficult conditions, with twisted metal trapping victims inside the wreckage. “We have even had to remove a dead person to be able to reach someone alive,” said the head of the Córdoba fire service.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the crash as a “night of deep pain” and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia also conveyed their condolences.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente noted the accident was “extremely strange,” occurring on a recently renovated straight section of track and involving a nearly new train. An investigation into the cause is underway.

High-speed rail services between Madrid and several Andalusian cities have been suspended at least through Monday. Spain operates Europe’s largest high-speed rail network, spanning more than 3,000 kilometers.

Technicians have discovered pieces of the track that are completely broken, but it is not known whether this was the cause or a result of the crash. Technicians will also analyze the detachment of the wheels from one of the trains.

The crash marks Spain’s most serious rail accident since 2013, when a derailment near Santiago de Compostela killed 80 people.

On Tuesday 20th, two more trains derailed in Spain, specifically in the region of Catalonia. The collapse of a wall that had invaded the tracks caused the derailment of a commuter train on the R-4 line between Gèlida and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, with an initial toll of 20 injured, five of them seriously.The authorities closed the AP-7 motorway due to the danger of a collapse near Martorell.

Meanwhile, a train on the RG1 line derailed between the stations of Tordera and Maçanet-Massanes after hitting one of the rocks on the tracks. The incident did not cause any injuries, although the 10 people traveling on the train had to be rescued by the fire department. On January 17, another incident at Tortosa station caused an explosion and fire when the overhead power line fell onto a train.
