Trump claims Iran war could end soon, Hormuz to re…

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has claimed that the war with Iran could come to an end soon, while negotiations are reportedly continuing over the future of the conflict and the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said the United States, Iran and Oman were close to reaching a temporary agreement aimed at reopening the key maritime passage. His remarks offered a potentially hopeful signal after weeks of heightened tensions and disruption in the region.

The US president also dismissed reports that the conflict had significantly depleted American weapons stocks, insisting there was no truth to such claims.

Trump further rejected reports of disagreements or growing tensions with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, playing down speculation about friction within his administration over the handling of the war.

However, the picture on the diplomatic front remains uncertain. Arab media reports have claimed that efforts to broker a ceasefire between the United States, Israel and Iran have stalled, highlighting the difficulties surrounding a possible breakthrough.

At the same time, Iranian authorities have reportedly tightened internal security measures across the country, particularly in Tehran, as uncertainty over the conflict continues.

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the crisis because of its importance to global energy supplies and international shipping. Any agreement that restores normal traffic through the waterway could ease pressure on regional markets and provide a significant boost to wider diplomatic efforts.

For now, Trump’s prediction of a quick end to the war contrasts with reports suggesting that major obstacles still remain before a lasting ceasefire can be secured.

Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan return sparks excitement around Ahsoka

Another exciting chapter in the Star Wars universe is officially on its way, with fans getting a fresh look at the upcoming instalment of Ahsoka. Disney unveiled the official trailer on Friday, August 14, offering viewers a glimpse at the major battles, returning characters and new threats that will shape the story. The upcoming film features Rosario Dawson returning as Ahsoka Tano, while the story expands the conflict between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant. Grand Admiral Thrawn once again emerges as a major threat, bringing renewed danger to the galaxy as the New Republic struggles to contain the growing power of the Empire and the Nightsisters. The trailer also highlights Ahsoka and Sabine Wren’s continuing journey on Peridea, a mysterious world located in another galaxy. Their adventures are expected to play an important role in the new story, while the expanding conflict promises to bring several familiar Star Wars elements back into the spotlight. Among the biggest talking points surrounding the new instalment is the potential return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. McGregor previously portrayed the legendary Jedi throughout the Star Wars prequel trilogy and later reprised the role in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Fans have continued to hope that McGregor could return for another season of the series, particularly after his emotional reunion with Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker. However, McGregor recently admitted that there does not appear to be any major progress toward another season. “There seems to be no — I don’t know of any — progress in that direction,” the actor said while discussing the possibility of returning as Obi-Wan. McGregor nevertheless remains hopeful that more stories featuring the character could eventually be told. He suggested that there are still interesting possibilities for the beloved Jedi, leaving the door open for a future appearance. Although a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi may not happen soon, fans have not given up hope of seeing McGregor in the role again. His potential involvement in future Star Wars projects continues to generate excitement, especially as the franchise explores new timelines and characters. The upcoming story is also expected to include live-action flashbacks involving Ahsoka and Anakin during the Clone Wars. These sequences could provide additional insight into their relationship and Ahsoka’s development as a Jedi. With the return of Ahsoka, Sabine and Thrawn, along with the continuing Imperial threat and possible connections to Anakin and Obi-Wan, the new instalment is shaping up to be a major event for Star Wars fans. The film is currently expected to arrive on January 20, 2027, giving audiences plenty of reason to anticipate another major chapter in the galaxy far, far away.

Pakistan rejects Afghan claim over alleged weapons…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has rejected claims by the Afghan Taliban that weapons are being smuggled from Pakistan into Afghanistan, calling the allegation baseless and contrary to established facts. In a statement, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the allegation appeared to be an attempt to divert international attention from the more serious security concerns emerging from Afghan territory. The ministry said Afghanistan already possesses a large quantity of modern weapons and military equipment left behind after the withdrawal of US and allied forces. According to the ministry, the value of the abandoned military equipment has been estimated at around $7.2 billion. Pakistan also pointed to Afghanistan’s large stockpiles of Soviet-era weapons. These weapons, it said, accumulated during decades of conflict in the country and remain another major source of arms available on Afghan soil. The ministry argued that attributing such weapons to Pakistan was misleading. It said the claim could shift attention away from the presence of militant groups operating from Afghanistan. Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns over militant activity originating from Afghan territory. Islamabad maintains that terrorist groups continue to find shelter and operational space there. The ministry said these groups were allegedly using Afghan territory to plan, support and carry out attacks against Pakistan. It urged the Afghan Taliban authorities to focus on addressing militant safe havens instead of making what Pakistan described as unsupported allegations against Islamabad. “Afghan Taliban” authorities, according to the statement, should take effective measures against terrorist groups operating from their territory. Pakistan also called on Afghan authorities to honour their commitments and ensure that Afghan soil is not used for terrorism against Pakistan or any other country. The latest statement comes amid continued tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over security and cross-border militancy. Islamabad has repeatedly demanded concrete action against groups that it says are involved in attacks inside Pakistan. Pakistan has also stressed that the issue should be addressed through practical measures rather than accusations. The ministry maintained that Afghanistan’s existing weapons stockpiles and the continued presence of militant groups are important factors in the regional security situation. It said efforts to blame Pakistan for the presence of weapons in Afghanistan should not distract the international community from addressing terrorism and militant activity based in the region.

Four Palestinians killed in Israeli raid on West B…

JERUSALEM: At least four Palestinians were killed and four others wounded after Israeli forces, accompanied by Israeli settlers, launched a raid on a town in the occupied West Bank on Friday, according to Palestinian health officials and local sources. The latest violence took place in the town of Tell, located southwest of Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank, where tensions have continued to escalate amid repeated military operations and attacks by Israeli settlers. The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed in a statement that the death toll from the incident had risen to four. It added that four more Palestinians were injured during the assault, with three of the wounded reported to be in critical condition and receiving emergency medical treatment. According to local residents and security sources, Israeli settlers entered the town before Israeli troops moved in, triggering panic among residents. Witnesses said the attackers targeted several residential neighborhoods and opened direct fire at two Palestinian homes. Residents described scenes of chaos as families rushed to take shelter while ambulances struggled to reach the wounded. Emergency crews and local volunteers evacuated the injured under difficult conditions as sporadic gunfire continued in parts of the town. The incident marks another deadly episode in the occupied West Bank, where confrontations between Israeli forces, settlers and Palestinians have intensified in recent months. Rights groups and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the growing number of civilian casualties and attacks on residential areas. The Palestinian Ministry of Health condemned the killings and called on the international community to take immediate steps to protect civilians in the occupied territories. Palestinian officials have also urged international organizations to investigate the latest incident and hold those responsible accountable. Israeli authorities had not immediately issued a detailed statement regarding the operation or responded to the allegations made by Palestinian officials at the time of reporting. The occupied West Bank has witnessed a sharp rise in violence alongside the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with frequent Israeli military raids, armed confrontations and settler attacks contributing to worsening security conditions across the territory. Friday’s deadly raid in Tell adds to growing international concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, as calls for restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts continue to mount. With casualties increasing and tensions showing little sign of easing, fears remain that violence could spread further across the region in the coming days.

Antarctic cold blast grips New Zealand’s South Island

A powerful cold wave sweeping north from Antarctica has engulfed New Zealand’s South Island, bringing freezing temperatures, fierce winds, and unusually heavy snowfall that has severely disrupted daily life across the region. The city of Dunedin has been among the hardest hit, experiencing strong icy winds accompanied by significant snowfall. Residents woke up to streets, rooftops, and vehicles covered in several inches of snow, creating hazardous conditions for both pedestrians and motorists. The unusual weather has transformed the city into a winter landscape, while also causing widespread travel disruptions. Authorities reported that the heavy snowfall has blanketed roads, making many routes dangerous and, in some areas, impassable. Snowplows and emergency crews have been deployed to clear major highways and ensure safe access for emergency services. However, officials have urged residents to stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary, warning that icy roads and reduced visibility could lead to accidents. Public transportation has also been significantly affected. All bus services in Dunedin were suspended due to unsafe road conditions, leaving commuters stranded and forcing many schools, businesses, and public institutions to adjust their schedules. Local authorities continue to monitor the weather closely before deciding when transportation services can safely resume. The severe weather has also disrupted travel between New Zealand’s North and South Islands. Ferry services connecting the two islands have been suspended because of dangerous sea conditions caused by the powerful Antarctic storm system. Strong winds and rough waves have made navigation unsafe, affecting both passenger and freight transport. The suspension of ferry operations is expected to delay the movement of goods and impact travel plans for thousands of people. Meteorologists say the cold outbreak originated from Antarctica and pushed unusually frigid air across southern New Zealand. Such weather systems are capable of producing intense snowfall, especially when cold Antarctic air interacts with moisture over the surrounding oceans. While snowfall is common during winter in parts of the South Island, the intensity of this storm has been described as exceptional for several areas. Emergency management agencies have advised residents to prepare for continued freezing conditions. People have been encouraged to keep emergency supplies at home, avoid unnecessary travel, dress warmly, and check on elderly neighbors or vulnerable family members who may require assistance during the cold spell. The harsh weather has also raised concerns for farmers, who are working to protect livestock from freezing temperatures and strong winds. Agricultural authorities have urged farmers to provide adequate shelter and food for animals until conditions improve. Forecasters predict that the Antarctic cold blast may continue to affect parts of the South Island over the coming days, with additional snowfall and icy conditions possible in higher elevations. Officials remain on high alert as they assess the impact of the storm and work to restore essential services. Residents are advised to stay informed through official weather updates and follow safety instructions until the severe weather subsides.
