The United Kingdom has invited applications from Pakistani students, professionals and entrepreneurs for its fully funded Chevening Scholarships, Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) Fellowship and Commonwealth Startup Fellowship.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the British High Commission said the programmes aim to help talented Pakistanis gain access to world-class education, strengthen professional skills and build international networks.

The Chevening Scholarship offers fully funded one-year master’s degree programmes at leading UK universities for individuals who demonstrate leadership potential, professional achievements and a commitment to creating positive change in their communities.

The Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Fellowship is designed for mid-career academics and professionals. It provides an opportunity to conduct independent research at the University of Oxford while engaging with scholars from around the world.

The Commonwealth Startup Fellowship targets promising entrepreneurs, helping them develop innovative businesses through mentorship, expert guidance and training in the UK. The programme also supports participants in preparing their ventures for future growth and expansion.

British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott said Pakistan has an abundance of talented individuals, and these programmes are designed to equip them with the skills, knowledge and global connections needed to lead organisations, expand businesses and address major global challenges.

She advised applicants to submit original applications based on their own experiences, ambitions and ideas, warning that the use of AI-generated responses could lead to disqualification during the selection process.

The High Commission said all three programmes cover major expenses, including airfare, tuition fees, visa costs and living allowances, allowing selected candidates to focus entirely on their studies or professional development.

Beyond academic and career opportunities, participants will also gain international exposure, experience different cultures and establish long-term professional relationships with leaders and experts from across the globe.

According to the British High Commission, Pakistan has produced more than 2,000 Chevening alumni who are serving in government, business, academia, media and civil society. Worldwide, the Chevening network includes numerous influential leaders, including several current and former heads of state and government.

Applications for the Commonwealth Startup Fellowship opened on August 3 and will remain open until September 1, while applications for the Chevening Scholarship and the OCIS Fellowship are also currently being accepted through their respective official application portals.

    PPP leads in two AJK seats as PML-N wins one

    MUZAFFARABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party is leading in two constituencies in the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is ahead in one seat. An independent candidate has also secured victory in another constituency, according to unofficial results. Polling was held in four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli districts in the Poonch division. However, voting could not take place at several polling stations because of unrest and security concerns. In LA-15 Bagh-2, PPP candidate Zia Qamar was leading after results from most polling stations were received. PML-N candidate Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas was in second place. PML-N candidate Sardar Mir Akbar Khan was leading in LA-16 Eastern Bagh. He was ahead of PPP candidate Sardar Qamar Zaman Khan, making the constituency the strongest prospect for the PML-N in the third phase. In LA-17 Haveli-Kahuta, PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was ahead of PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz in the closely contested race. An unexpected result emerged from LA-14 Western Bagh. Independent candidate Sardar Sajid Iqbal Abbasi defeated former AJK prime minister and Muslim Conference leader Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan in his home constituency. The AJK Election Commission has also announced re-polling at 23 polling stations. The exercise will take place on August 15. According to Election Commission officials, voting will be repeated at nine polling stations in LA-16 and 14 stations in LA-15. Polling at these locations could not be conducted during the earlier round because of unrest. Elections in five constituencies of Poonch and two constituencies of Sudhnoti have been postponed. The authorities are expected to announce new dates after reviewing the security situation. Meanwhile, PML-N candidate Mohsin Aziz has demanded a recount in LA-17 Bagh-4. His request was rejected by the Returning Officer, prompting PML-N workers to stage a sit-in outside the RO office. Aziz said the protest would continue until the votes were recounted. The demand has added another layer of uncertainty to the closely contested election process. The PPP has also raised allegations of electoral irregularities. Party leaders have accused authorities of disrupting polling and creating difficulties for voters and polling agents. PPP representatives have called for an impartial review of complaints. They said the Election Commission should examine allegations of irregularities to ensure that the voters’ mandate is protected. PPP Senator Sherry Rehman had earlier raised concerns over delays in polling. She also alleged that party polling agents were stopped from entering some polling stations. The PML-N has rejected the allegations of widespread rigging. Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said the PPP was using the rigging narrative to cover what he described as an electoral setback. He also called for an end to protests and sit-ins. Sanaullah said legitimate demands would be considered by the government, while warning that violence and armed activity would be dealt with according to law. The PML-N remains in a strong position overall after the first two phases of the AJK elections. It won nine of 13 seats in the Mirpur division during the first phase. In the second phase, the party secured 15 seats from the Muzaffarabad division and refugee seats. The PPP won four seats in the first phase and six in the second. The PML-N has so far secured 24 seats across the first two phases, while the PPP has won 10. The ruling party has said it needs only a few additional seats to reach a two-thirds majority in the AJK Assembly.

    Kerosene price reduced as government extends relief on petroleum products

    The federal government has extended the latest reduction in petroleum prices by lowering the cost of kerosene oil, providing additional relief to consumers who rely on the fuel for household and commercial use, particularly in remote and off-grid areas. According to a notification issued by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of kerosene has been reduced by Rs3.58 per litre. Following the latest revision, the new retail price of kerosene has been fixed at Rs301.64 per litre, down from the previous rate of Rs305.22 per litre. The reduction comes as part of the government’s broader revision of petroleum product prices aimed at passing on the benefit of changes in international oil markets to consumers. Earlier, the Petroleum Division announced fresh prices for major petroleum products effective from August 4, confirming a decrease in the prices of both petrol and high-speed diesel. Under the revised rates, petrol has become cheaper by Rs4.80 per litre, bringing its new price down to Rs331.95 per litre. Likewise, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been reduced by Rs2.45 per litre, setting the new rate at Rs389.93 per litre. The latest cuts are expected to provide modest relief to motorists, transporters, and businesses facing high operating costs, while the reduction in kerosene prices is likely to benefit households in regions where the fuel remains a primary source for cooking, heating, and lighting.

    KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that religious harmony is deeply embedded in the culture of Sindh, flowing through the waters of the River Indus and rooted in the soil of the province, where people of all faiths have lived together with mutual respect for centuries. Addressing a conference held in connection with National Minorities Day at the Arts Council Karachi, the Chief Minister paid tribute to the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, recalling his historic policy statement in which he had declared that Hindus would cease to be Hindus and Muslims would cease to be Muslims – not in the religious sense, but in the political sense – as equal citizens of the state. Murad Ali Shah said that while many parts of the world continue to struggle with ensuring equal rights and freedoms for religious minorities, Sindh takes pride in its long tradition of inclusivity, tolerance and respect for diversity. Highlighting the political empowerment of minorities in Sindh, he noted that prominent minority leaders, including MNA Dr Mahesh Kumar Malani, Gianchand Israni and Hari Ram Kishori Lal, had been directly elected to legislative bodies by the people, demonstrating public trust beyond religious identities. The Chief Minister observed that extremist and religiously fanatic elements had never found electoral acceptance in Sindh, reflecting the province’s moderate and pluralistic character. Sharing his personal experience, Murad Ali Shah said that members of minority communities had played a significant role in shaping his educational journey. He recalled receiving his early education at St. Bonaventure’s High School in Hyderabad, established by the Christian community, followed by St. Patrick’s High School in Karachi, also founded by Christians. He later studied at D.J. Science College, established by the Hindu community, and graduated from NED University, founded through the contributions of the Parsi community. “In this way, every minority community has contributed to my education and personal development,” he said, adding that the services rendered by minorities in the fields of education, healthcare, business and public service are an integral part of Pakistan’s progress. Referring to his government’s commitment to merit and equal opportunity, the Chief Minister recalled a recruitment process in the Sindh Police in Mirpurkhas where minority candidates selected on open merit were initially being counted against the minority quota. “I personally intervened and directed that those selected on merit be counted separately, ensuring that reserved quota seats remained available for other eligible minority candidates,” he said. Murad Ali Shah reiterated the Sindh government’s commitment to safeguarding the constitutional, social and economic rights of minorities and promoting an inclusive society where every citizen enjoys equal opportunities and protection under the law. At the conclusion of the event, a cake was cut to celebrate the birthday of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, with participants extending their greetings and best wishes to him.

Curbing birthright citizenship has remained one of the central goals of Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, with the White House specifically targeting birth tourism, in which pregnant foreign nationals travel to the United States specifically to give birth on American soil. Following the Supreme Court setback on June 30, Trump initially urged Congress to pass legislation addressing the issue before ultimately turning to executive orders instead, a route that allows the administration to set policy directly but carries less legal weight than legislation passed by Congress.

According to rescue officials, a newborn baby boy and girl were found after allegedly being abandoned inside a shopping bag. The infants were subsequently handed over to Child Protection Gujranwala for care and protection. Doctors who examined the newborn twins said that both babies were in good health. The children are now under the supervision of the relevant child protection authorities as further arrangements are being made for their care. Police have reportedly traced the woman believed to be the mother of the newborn twins. She is currently under police custody while receiving treatment at a hospital. According to police sources, the initial investigation suggests that the woman’s husband had contracted another marriage. Police sources said the alleged abandonment of the twins may have been linked to the distress caused by the second marriage.     Customs seize cameras and electronics worth Rs5.5m…

    Customs officials at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi have seized a large quantity of electronic goods from a passenger arriving from Dubai. According to customs sources, the passenger was intercepted during a routine check at the airport. Officials recovered 29 cameras from the passenger. The seized items also included five camera lenses. The consignment contained 19 digital cameras. Customs officials also found 10 fitness bands among the electronic goods. Other electronic items were also recovered during the inspection. The total value of the seized goods has been estimated at around Rs5.5 million. Customs officials are examining the recovered items as part of the ongoing investigation. The authorities are also checking the passenger’s travel and import details.
