UoG reviews over Rs6bn budget for FY2026-27

GUJRAT: The Finance and Planning Committee of the University of Gujrat (UoG) has reviewed a proposed budget exceeding Rs6 billion for the fiscal year 2026-27, with a focus on financial sustainability, institutional reforms, student welfare and infrastructure development.

The proposed budget was discussed during the committee’s 36th meeting held at the Hafiz Hayat Campus under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zahoor Ul Haq, recipient of the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. The budget will now be placed before the university syndicate for final approval.

During the meeting, the committee was informed that the university had strengthened its financial position through improved governance and prudent resource management. Officials said the institution generated nearly Rs3.75 billion through its own resources, reducing dependence on external financial support.

The meeting was told that governance reforms and administrative measures implemented during the previous financial year resulted in savings of around Rs400 million. University management said these savings had been redirected towards student welfare initiatives and development projects.

According to the budget proposal, around Rs370 million has been allocated for scholarships, enabling financial assistance for nearly one-third of the university’s enrolled students. Officials said the move reflects the institution’s commitment to ensuring that deserving students continue their education despite financial constraints.

The committee also approved plans to invest Rs450 million in the purchase of 18 new buses to improve transport facilities for students and staff. The university estimates the new fleet will reduce annual transportation expenses by nearly Rs60 million through improved operational efficiency.

Members were further informed that the university is expanding the use of solar energy across its campuses. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce electricity costs while supporting environmentally sustainable operations.

The meeting also reviewed reforms related to faculty workload management, which reportedly generated savings of Rs119 million. University officials said the measures were designed to optimise academic resources without affecting the quality of teaching and learning.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zahoor Ul Haq emphasised the importance of financial discipline, transparency and efficient utilisation of resources to ensure the university’s long-term growth. He said the proposed budget reflects the institution’s priorities of academic excellence, student support and sustainable development.

The meeting was attended by Additional Treasurer Ghulam Safdar Malik, Additional Secretary Higher Education Department Zahida Azhar, Section Officer Finance Department Asghar Ali, who joined online, Registrar Muhammad Naeem Butt, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Dr Faisal Mahmood Mirza, Academic Council members Dr Ashfaq Ahmad Mirza and Dr Bushra Akram, Deputy Treasurer Muhammad Fawaz Khokhar, Director ORIC Prof Dr Audil Rashid and other committee members.

PSX sheds 280 points amid cautious trading

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained under pressure during Tuesday’s trading session as investors adopted a cautious approach. Profit-taking also contributed to the pressure on the benchmark index. The partial recovery from the morning low indicated some buying interest at lower levels. The afternoon session was expected to determine whether the index could recover its losses or close the day in negative territory.

Government cuts petrol and diesel prices after lat…

The federal government has announced a reduction in petroleum prices, providing some relief to consumers across Pakistan. According to the latest notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs2.20 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) has become cheaper by Rs1.50 per litre. After the reduction, petrol will now be available at Rs327.62 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has been revised to Rs380.86 per litre. The new prices will come into effect from August 8, 2026, according to the official notification. The government continues to impose taxes and duties on petroleum products, including Rs110 per litre on petrol and Rs96 per litre on high-speed diesel. These charges remain a significant component of fuel prices paid by consumers. The latest reduction follows changes in international oil market trends and fluctuations in global fuel prices. In recent months, petroleum rates in Pakistan witnessed major increases due to uncertainty in international markets, particularly after tensions and conflict-related developments in the Middle East affected oil supply concerns. High-speed diesel prices had reached a record level of Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, after rising from Rs281 per litre following the escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran. Similarly, petrol prices had climbed to Rs458.41 per litre during the same period after starting from around Rs266 per litre in early March. Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would be adjusted more frequently, including possible daily revisions, due to rapid changes in international oil markets. The government assigned the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the responsibility of determining fuel prices based on global trends. The decision to introduce daily fuel price adjustments faced opposition from the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which raised concerns and indicated that it may consider a protest strategy. Petrol remains one of the most widely used fuels in Pakistan, mainly powering private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws, and small transport vehicles. Any change in petrol prices directly affects household budgets, particularly for middle- and lower-income groups. High-speed diesel also plays a critical role in the economy as it is widely used in heavy transport, agricultural machinery, power generation plants, and industrial operations. Changes in diesel prices often influence transportation costs and can impact the prices of essential goods. The latest reduction is expected to provide limited relief to consumers, while future fuel prices will continue to depend on international crude oil markets, exchange rates, and government taxation policies.

PTI seeks immediate hospital transfer for Imran Kh…

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded the immediate transfer of party founder Imran Khan to a hospital after a medical report highlighted concerns over his blood pressure and anxiety. The demand came after a report from Adiala Jail authorities was submitted to the Supreme Court. The report contains details of Imran Khan’s latest medical condition and recommendations for his care. PTI leaders held a press conference on Monday and expressed concern over the former prime minister’s health. They called for him to be moved to a hospital where he could receive specialised medical treatment. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said Imran Khan’s elevated blood pressure was a serious concern. He demanded that the former prime minister receive the best available medical care. Gohar said Imran Khan should also be given access to his personal doctors. He demanded that his family members and lawyers should be allowed to meet him. The PTI chairman said access to Imran Khan had remained restricted for months. He claimed that party representatives had repeatedly approached the courts seeking permission for meetings. According to Gohar, the PTI had approached the high court around 25 times and the Supreme Court around 15 times over the issue. He described meetings with family members, doctors and lawyers as Imran Khan’s fundamental legal right. He urged the judiciary to address the matter and ensure that the former prime minister received appropriate medical attention. Gohar said the party’s concerns would not end until Imran Khan was provided proper medical treatment and regular access to his family and legal team. He also criticised what he described as a prolonged dispute over access to the PTI founder. Gohar said the situation had continued since October and called for an end to what he termed a “cat and mouse game”. The PTI’s demands came shortly before the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear matters concerning Imran Khan. The jail report had recommended increasing family interaction to help manage his anxiety and blood pressure. It also contained details of his medical examinations and treatment. PTI leaders argued that the reported health concerns should be treated seriously and that hospitalisation would ensure closer medical supervision. The party has also continued to call for access to Imran Khan’s personal physicians, saying they should be allowed to assess his condition independently. The issue of Imran Khan’s health has become a major political and legal point of contention. PTI leaders have repeatedly raised concerns over his medical care and restrictions on meetings.

ECP rejects Achakzai as PkMAP chief, delists four …

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday declined to recognise veteran politician Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, citing the party’s failure to conduct mandatory intra-party elections, while also delisting four political parties for violating election laws. A five-member bench, headed by the Chief Election Commissioner, heard proceedings related to PkMAP’s non-compliance with legal requirements, including the absence of intra-party elections, amendments to the party constitution, and objections concerning its financial accounts. During the hearing, the commission questioned the validity of the power of attorney submitted by the party’s legal counsel. The lawyer informed the bench that the document had been signed by the party chairman, Mahmood Khan Achakzai. However, the Chief Election Commissioner observed that the party currently had no officially recognised chairman because it had failed to hold intra-party elections as required under the law. The commission, therefore, refused to recognise Achakzai as the party’s head for the purpose of the proceedings. The ECP stated that while the power of attorney would be placed on record, a separate order would determine whether it would be formally accepted. At the request of PkMAP’s counsel, the commission granted additional time to prepare arguments and adjourned the case until August 19. In a separate development, the ECP intensified its enforcement of election regulations by removing four more political parties from its official register. The delisted parties include Technology Movement Pakistan, Awami Jamhoori Party Pakistan, Hum Awam Pakistan Party, and Pakistan Reform Party. According to official notifications, the parties were delisted for failing to conduct intra-party elections, submit annual financial statements, and comply with other mandatory legal obligations. The latest decisions underline the ECP’s continued push to ensure transparency, financial accountability, and internal democracy within Pakistan’s political parties as it strengthens enforcement of the country’s electoral laws.
