Trinasolar eyes Pakistan’s battery storage boom

Pakistan has built one of the world’s fastest-growing distributed solar markets. According to recent research by Ember and Renewables First, it is estimated that Pakistan has approximately 38GW of distributed solar capacity across residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors. As this installed solar base grows, the next challenge is making that energy more flexible and available when businesses need it most. Trina Storage, Trinasolar’s global battery energy storage business, says Pakistan’s expanding solar base is increasing interest in solar-plus-storage, particularly for utility-scale and microgrids for commercial & industrial (C&I). A Renewables First report estimates that Pakistan imported 4.6 GWh of BESS in 2025, representing 220% year-on-year growth. Rather than replacing existing solar assets, well-designed solar-plus-storage systems can help businesses optimize renewable energy use, improve operational flexibility and support more resilient energy management strategies, depending on each site’s design and operating requirements. However, adding BESS to an existing solar installation is not a simple plug-and-play exercise. Projects require careful assessment of the site’s electrical architecture, inverter configuration, demand profile, equipment compatibility, energy management system, safety requirements and commercial objectives. For many retrofit projects, an AC-coupled approach provides a practical solution by allowing battery storage to operate alongside an existing PV system through its own Power Conversion System (PCS), helping retain much of the original solar infrastructure. Compatibility must still be assessed at system level, including electrical interfaces, communications, controls and compliance with the applicable IEC and UL standards. Designed for utility-scale and C&I applications, Trina Storage’s Elementa Series is compatible and is designed for integration within solar-plus-storage systems using Trina or third-party equipment, with compatibility assessed according to the project architecture. Beyond supplying technology, Trinasolar can work with customers and EPC partners to assess system compatibility, determine the most suitable BESS configuration and develop an operating strategy aligned with each site’s technical and commercial requirements. Trinasolar’s energy storage expertise builds on its long-established presence in Pakistan’s solar market, where the company has supplied more than 500MW of 700W+ modules across commercial, industrial and residential applications and recently introduced the Vertex N G3 760W series. Globally, Trina Storage, established in 2015, has achieved BloombergNEF Tier 1 Energy Storage Manufacturer status for 10 consecutive quarters and is expected to surpass 30 GWh of cumulative shipments by the first half of 2026. Its latest 6.25MWh Elementa 3 platform combines advanced battery technology, intelligent thermal management and integrated safety features for large-scale energy storage applications. “Pakistan has already built a strong solar foundation. The next phase is to consider how battery storage can be integrated with those assets to make renewable electricity available across a wider range of operating conditions. That requires careful assessment of the existing equipment, the site’s load profile and the role the battery is expected to perform. Trinasolar’s PV experience and Trina Storage’s global BESS capabilities give us a useful perspective across both sides of that system,” said Edison Zhou, Head of Pakistan, Trinasolar.

Govt increases petrol by Rs1.63, diesel by Rs1.55

The government on Tuesday increased the price of petrol by Rs1.63 and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.55 per litre, passing on the impact of fluctuating global oil prices following renewed hostilities in the Persian Gulf. Following the changes, the price of petrol stands at Rs335.81 per litre, while HSD is now priced at Rs388.38 per litre. The government is charging a total of Rs110 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs96 on diesel. The Petroleum Division’s notification said the new prices would be applicable for July 29 (Wednesday). The diesel price has come down from a peak of Rs520.35 recorded on April 3, after beginning its upward trajectory from Rs281 per litre when the US-Iran war broke out on February 28. Similarly, petrol had peaked at Rs458.41 on April 3 after rising from Rs266 in the first week of March. Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would now be fixed on a daily basis due to fluctuations in international market prices. The government had been announcing weekly revisions since early March, alongside conservation measures amid possible oil supply disruptions due to the ongoing Middle East conflict. In April, the federal government also announced targeted relief measures to provide subsidised fuel. The petroleum minister stated that the cabinet and prime minister had decided to give the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the responsibility of deciding fuel prices daily based on international market trends. The daily pricing decision was rejected by the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which said it would consider a protest plan this week. Petrol is mainly used in private transport, small vehicles, rickshaws and two-wheelers, and changes in its price affect the middle and lower-middle classes. Similarly, diesel price changes impact the public at large, as it is primarily used in the heavy transport sector, power plants and large generators. Petrol and HSD are the major revenue earners, with monthly sales of about 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes, compared to just 10,000 tonnes of monthly demand for kerosene.

Iran rejects US ceasefire proposal sent through Ir…

TEHRAN/WASHINGTON: Iran has reportedly rejected a US-backed ceasefire proposal delivered through Iraq, insisting that any agreement must address the underlying causes of the conflict rather than offer only a temporary halt in fighting, according to a report published by The New York Times. The report said the proposal was conveyed during Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi’s visit to Tehran after meetings with US officials in Washington. Acting as an intermediary, the Iraqi leader is said to have relayed Washington’s message in an effort to ease rising military tensions between Iran and the United States. According to the report, Iranian officials made it clear that a short-term ceasefire would not be acceptable unless it included concrete solutions to the broader disputes driving the conflict, particularly issues surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes. While the full details of the reported US proposal were not disclosed, Iranian officials were quoted as saying that a temporary pause in hostilities would do little to resolve the crisis without addressing Tehran’s core strategic concerns. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that the Iraqi prime minister had briefed Tehran on his discussions in Washington and shared his observations from the visit. However, Araghchi emphasized that communication channels between Iran and the United States already exist through several regional mediators. “The issue is not the delivery of messages,” Araghchi said, according to Iranian media. “The real problem is Washington’s approach.” He accused the United States of pursuing what he described as an “unreasonable, greedy and controlling” policy that has fueled the current crisis. The report added that Tehran remains committed to its long-standing strategic demands and is unwilling to accept any agreement that it believes undermines Iran’s national interests or regional position. As of the time of publication, the US government had not issued an official response to the New York Times report or to the statements attributed to Iranian officials. The details of the alleged proposal have also not been independently verified. Diplomatic efforts involving Iraq, Qatar, Pakistan, and other regional countries are continuing behind the scenes in an attempt to reduce tensions and prevent a wider regional conflict. However, political analysts say deep disagreements between Tehran and Washington continue to limit the prospects for a breakthrough. The reported rejection underscores the significant obstacles facing mediation efforts, particularly as disputes over regional security, sanctions, and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved. With military tensions still high and both sides maintaining firm public positions, observers believe a comprehensive diplomatic solution remains difficult despite ongoing regional mediation initiatives.

Petrol pump owners announce nationwide strike over…

The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) has announced a nationwide strike beginning Wednesday night after negotiations with the government over the proposed daily petroleum pricing mechanism ended without an agreement. The decision was announced following talks between representatives of the association and a government delegation led by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik. The discussions focused on the government’s plan to introduce daily fuel price adjustments, but both sides failed to reach a consensus. Speaking after the meeting, APPPOA leaders said the proposed pricing system was unacceptable and would seriously affect the financial stability of petrol pump owners across the country. They argued that the new mechanism would create uncertainty for businesses already operating on narrow profit margins. Association officials said nearly 15,000 petrol pumps across Pakistan are expected to remain closed if the strike goes ahead, warning that the shutdown could disrupt fuel supplies nationwide. Vice Chairman Nauman Ali Butt said petrol dealers wanted petroleum prices to continue being revised on a monthly basis rather than daily. He also pointed out that dealers’ commissions had not been increased for the past three years despite rising operating costs. APPPOA Chairman Humayun Khan said petrol pump owners were already facing financial pressure due to regulatory requirements, policies of oil marketing companies and increasing business expenses. He argued that daily price revisions would benefit oil marketing companies while placing additional risks on retail dealers. According to the association, frequent price changes could create confusion in the market and make inventory management more difficult for petrol pump operators. The association also criticised the government for introducing the policy without consulting key stakeholders. It urged authorities to suspend the daily pricing mechanism, increase dealers’ commissions and involve petrol pump owners in future policy decisions. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) said it would hold a meeting of its executive committee on Wednesday to decide whether it would also join the nationwide strike. PPDA representatives acknowledged that discussions with government officials and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had taken place. They said OGRA officials sought additional time to review the concerns raised by dealers before making further recommendations to the government. The government maintains that the new pricing mechanism is intended to improve transparency and ensure domestic fuel prices reflect changes in international oil markets more quickly. Under the proposed system, petroleum prices would be updated daily using a rolling average of global market prices.

    Pakistan’s major dams reach 72% storage capa…

Pakistan’s water reserves have improved significantly, with the country’s major reservoirs now filled to 72% of their total storage capacity, according to official data released on Sunday. The latest figures show that the combined water storage in the country’s key reservoirs has reached 9.466 million acre-feet (MAF), compared with a total storage capacity of 13.149 million acre-feet. Officials said the improvement follows a substantial increase in water inflows across the Indus River system, with inflows significantly exceeding outflows. The higher inflow has helped replenish major dams and strengthen the country’s water reserves. The increase in reservoir levels is expected to support irrigation needs, improve water availability for agriculture and enhance overall water management during the current season. Authorities continue to monitor inflows and reservoir levels as the monsoon season contributes to rising water storage across the country’s major dams.
