AJK polls begin with 19,000 security personnel

The first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections is being held today across the Mirpur division, with authorities completing extensive arrangements for polling and security.

The first phase covers Mirpur, Bhimber and Kotli districts. Officials said all polling material has been delivered to the designated polling stations ahead of voting.

AJK Chief Secretary Khushal Khan and Election Commission Secretary Raja Muhammad Shakeel said the authorities were committed to ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.

They urged voters to exercise their democratic right peacefully. They also warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt polling or create a law and order situation.

Officials advised voters and political workers to avoid spreading or believing unverified information circulating on social media. They said all stakeholders must follow the election code of conduct.

The AJK elections are being conducted in three phases. Polling in the Mirpur division is taking place today. The second phase will be held in Muzaffarabad on August 2, followed by the third phase in Poonch on August 10.

Security has been significantly increased across the three districts. Mirpur police authorities said a detailed security plan has been prepared to protect voters, election staff and polling stations.

Mirpur SSP Khurram Iqbal said security forces have adopted a three-layer strategy. Polling stations have been divided into highly sensitive, sensitive and normal categories. Security personnel and resources have been assigned according to the level of risk.

The district has also been divided into 56 security sectors. Each sector is being supervised by a deputy superintendent of police. Monitoring and rapid-response teams will remain active throughout the voting process.

Authorities have also prepared additional contingency arrangements to deal with emergencies. A second response force will be available if required, while a third security layer will operate under zonal commanders.

More than 1.4 million registered voters are expected to participate in the first phase across 13 constituencies. Authorities have established 2,454 polling stations containing 3,701 polling booths.

Around 3,500 election officials have been assigned duties for the polling process. Voting will take place from 8am to 5pm.

The 13 constituencies include four in Mirpur district, three in Bhimber and six in Kotli. Of the total polling stations, 1,965 have been classified as sensitive or highly sensitive.

More than 19,000 security personnel have been deployed across the division. The force includes around 17,000 police officers, while approximately 2,100 army personnel will remain available as a backup force.

A total of 288 candidates are contesting the 13 seats. The main political competition is expected to involve the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Pakistan Peoples Party and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, along with several influential independent candidates.

Authorities have appealed to voters, candidates and political workers to cooperate with security personnel and maintain peace throughout polling.

India reclaim No. 1 spot in T20I rankings after Zimbabwe series win

HARARE, July 26: India have returned to the top of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings after securing a 2-0 lead in their three-match series against Zimbabwe. The reigning T20 World Cup champions had recently slipped from the No. 1 position after England swept them 4-0 in a five-match series. India have now responded strongly by winning the opening two matches of their Zimbabwe tour and reclaiming the summit. India began the series with a comfortable seven-wicket victory. Young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided the main highlight, scoring a rapid half-century from just 19 balls. The second match saw an even stronger batting performance from India. They posted 219-5 in their 20 overs, with Ishan Kishan producing an aggressive 81 and Tilak Varma remaining unbeaten on 60. Zimbabwe struggled in their chase. India’s bowlers restricted the hosts to 129 runs and secured a commanding 90-run victory. The result gave India an unassailable lead in the series and pushed them back to the top of the T20I rankings. Kishan said India’s batting approach was based on reading the pitch and adjusting their plans according to the conditions. He said the team focused on building partnerships after losing early wickets. The wicketkeeper-batter also highlighted the partnership with Shreyas Iyer. He said they aimed to take the innings deep rather than chase an unnecessarily high total. India’s return to the top comes after a difficult period in T20 cricket. Their latest success has provided a strong response to the setbacks suffered on the previous tour. With the series already secured, India have also strengthened their position ahead of the final T20I. A clean sweep would give the world champions further momentum after their return to the top of the rankings.

Diesel cut brings freight fare relief

RAWALPINDI: Goods transport and long-distance public transport operators have lowered fares following a Rs32.63-per-litre reduction in diesel prices, offering temporary relief to passengers and businesses. The Goods Transport Federation announced a 10 per cent reduction in freight charges, while fares for long-distance routes to nearby areas have been cut by 5 per cent. The fare revision, however, has not extended to all local transport. Taxis, Qingqis and motorbike rickshaws have raised their fares by another 5 per cent after petrol prices increased by Rs3 per litre. The standard stop-to-stop fare remains Rs50. Freight charges have also been reduced significantly on major routes. The cost of transporting containers and trailers from Karachi to Rawalpindi has fallen by Rs50,000, while charges for containers, trailers and heavy vehicles travelling from Karachi to Peshawar have dropped from Rs800,000 to Rs750,000. Transport federations said the reduced fares would remain in effect for only 24 hours. They warned that any increase in petroleum prices expected later in the week would result in the fare cuts being withdrawn proportionately. They further said bookings made by Thursday evening for heavy vehicles, trailers and containers operating on routes including Karachi-Peshawar, Peshawar-Lahore, Karachi and Multan could be revised if fuel prices rise, with additional charges imposed accordingly.

Shifa specialists join Imran’s eye assessment

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has confirmed that two specialists from Shifa International Hospital were involved in the eye examination of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan. According to a statement issued by PIMS on Saturday, Imran Khan was brought to the Islamabad hospital during the night between August 20 and 21 for a medical examination and treatment. The institute said the ophthalmological assessment was carried out with the participation of two Shifa International specialists. Other required examinations were conducted by doctors at PIMS. PIMS said the findings from the eye assessment were reviewed alongside the results of investigations conducted by its own medical specialists. A medical board consisting of PIMS doctors subsequently compiled the overall medical fitness report. However, the institute said it would not make the contents of the medical report public. PIMS cited patient confidentiality as well as directions issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for withholding the details of the report. The clarification comes amid controversy over the treatment and medical care being provided to Imran Khan, who is currently detained at Adiala Jail. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court had directed that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for treatment for several days. The court also ordered the government to facilitate weekly meetings between him and his family. The Supreme Court further directed authorities to provide access to Imran’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan. It ordered the formation of a medical board that would include an ophthalmologist, general physician and cardiologist, along with Dr Sultan. The government subsequently filed a review petition against the court’s order, describing the decision as discriminatory. Confusion arose later when reports suggested that Imran Khan was being moved from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar later said that the former prime minister had instead been taken to PIMS because of security concerns surrounding Shifa Hospital and the route leading to it. Tarar said doctors from Shifa International were also present during the medical examination at PIMS. After the examination, Imran Khan was declared medically fit and taken back to Adiala Jail. The development has drawn further attention from PTI and Imran Khan’s family, who have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and medical treatment. Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, also spoke publicly after meeting him and alleged that he was facing severe injustice and mistreatment.

JI launches countrywide protests against inflation

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is holding nationwide demonstrations on Friday against the petroleum levy, rising fuel prices and inflation. The party has announced protests and sit-ins in major cities and districts across the country. Demonstrations are scheduled to begin at 4pm. According to the party, protests will be held along hundreds of major roads and highways in around 170 districts. Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Peshawar, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi are among the cities where demonstrations have been planned. Several major locations have also been selected for sit-ins. These include Qurtaba Chowk in Lahore, Stop No. 26 in Islamabad, Mian Ghundi Chowk in Quetta and the Toll Plaza in Peshawar. Other protest points include Bosan Road in Multan, the Indus Highway in Karak, CPEC Chowk in Bannu and the Chakdara interchange. JI leaders have warned that the protest campaign could be expanded if authorities attempt to prevent the demonstrations. The party said the number of roads and highways involved could increase significantly. In Karachi, JI leaders said protest caravans would begin moving from several locations at 4pm. These include Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Hub Road, National Highway, Super Highway, Orangi, Korangi, Pakistan Chowk and Sher Shah. The caravans are expected to gather at Mazar-e-Quaid before moving towards Shahrah-e-Faisal. Karachi JI chief Monem Zafar Khan said the demonstrations would continue until the petroleum levy was withdrawn. He said roads along some protest routes could remain closed during the demonstrations. He added that emergency vehicles, including ambulances, would be allowed to pass. JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman had called for the nationwide action a day earlier. In a video message, he urged citizens to join the peaceful demonstrations and asked motorists to park their cars and motorcycles on roads at 4pm. The JI leadership has criticised the government over fuel-related taxes and the rising cost of essential goods. The party says ordinary citizens are facing increasing financial pressure because of higher fuel prices and indirect taxation. Hafiz Naeem also claimed that prices of several food items had increased over the past month. He said motorcycle users and other low-income citizens were particularly affected by higher fuel costs. The JI chief argued that people who do not fall within the formal income-tax system are also paying taxes through fuel levies and other indirect charges. He claimed the government collected around Rs1.9 trillion through the petroleum levy during the past year. The party has warned that further taxation could increase the burden on households if the government does not reconsider its policies. JI leaders are calling on citizens to participate in the protests and press the government to withdraw the petroleum levy
