JI launches countrywide protests against inflation

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is holding nationwide demonstrations on Friday against the petroleum levy, rising fuel prices and inflation.

The party has announced protests and sit-ins in major cities and districts across the country. Demonstrations are scheduled to begin at 4pm.

According to the party, protests will be held along hundreds of major roads and highways in around 170 districts. Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Peshawar, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi are among the cities where demonstrations have been planned.

Several major locations have also been selected for sit-ins. These include Qurtaba Chowk in Lahore, Stop No. 26 in Islamabad, Mian Ghundi Chowk in Quetta and the Toll Plaza in Peshawar.

Other protest points include Bosan Road in Multan, the Indus Highway in Karak, CPEC Chowk in Bannu and the Chakdara interchange.

JI leaders have warned that the protest campaign could be expanded if authorities attempt to prevent the demonstrations. The party said the number of roads and highways involved could increase significantly.

In Karachi, JI leaders said protest caravans would begin moving from several locations at 4pm. These include Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Hub Road, National Highway, Super Highway, Orangi, Korangi, Pakistan Chowk and Sher Shah.

The caravans are expected to gather at Mazar-e-Quaid before moving towards Shahrah-e-Faisal.

Karachi JI chief Monem Zafar Khan said the demonstrations would continue until the petroleum levy was withdrawn. He said roads along some protest routes could remain closed during the demonstrations.

He added that emergency vehicles, including ambulances, would be allowed to pass.

JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman had called for the nationwide action a day earlier. In a video message, he urged citizens to join the peaceful demonstrations and asked motorists to park their cars and motorcycles on roads at 4pm.

The JI leadership has criticised the government over fuel-related taxes and the rising cost of essential goods. The party says ordinary citizens are facing increasing financial pressure because of higher fuel prices and indirect taxation.

Hafiz Naeem also claimed that prices of several food items had increased over the past month. He said motorcycle users and other low-income citizens were particularly affected by higher fuel costs.

The JI chief argued that people who do not fall within the formal income-tax system are also paying taxes through fuel levies and other indirect charges.

He claimed the government collected around Rs1.9 trillion through the petroleum levy during the past year. The party has warned that further taxation could increase the burden on households if the government does not reconsider its policies.

    The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance has announced an indefinite strike across Pakistan from Saturday, August 8, in protest against rising fuel prices and additional financial burdens on the transport sector. Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan confirmed the strike and said goods transporters would continue keeping their vehicles off the roads until further decisions were made. He said the federal government had invited representatives of the transport alliance to a meeting on Monday to discuss their concerns. Awan said a committee had been formed to represent the transporters during talks with government officials. He added that the strike would continue until the meeting was held and the alliance announced its next course of action. According to Awan, earlier negotiations between the transport alliance and government officials at the commissioner’s office had failed to resolve the dispute. Following the unsuccessful talks, the transporters decided to proceed with their planned indefinite strike. The alliance is protesting against higher petrol and diesel prices. It is also opposing the government’s decision to determine petroleum product prices on a daily basis. Another major demand concerns the seven percent withholding tax imposed on the transport sector. Transporters say rising fuel costs and additional taxes have increased their operating expenses and created serious financial difficulties for the industry. They have urged the government to review the current policies and provide relief to the transport sector. The transporters have warned that the strike could affect the movement of goods across the country if the dispute continues. Goods transporters play a major role in supplying food, industrial products, raw materials and other essential items to markets and businesses. A prolonged strike could therefore put pressure on supply chains and affect the availability and transportation of essential goods in different areas. The government’s scheduled meeting with the transport alliance on Monday is expected to determine the next course of action. Transport representatives will present their demands during the talks and seek a solution to the ongoing dispute.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s disaster management authorities have issued a fresh flood alert as intensified monsoon rains continue to push water levels higher in major rivers, raising concerns over flooding in several parts of the country. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said river flows are expected to increase significantly between August 2 and 4, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and remain alert to changing weather conditions. According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), high flooding has been observed in the Lehri River at Head Gogi, while Nullah Palkhu near Wazirabad is experiencing medium-level flooding. The Indus River is currently witnessing low-level flooding at Kalabagh, Chashma, Guddu and Sukkur, while similar conditions have been reported at Head Nari on the Nari River. The NDMA warned that the Chenab River is likely to experience high water flows at Marala, with low to medium flooding anticipated at Khanki and Qadirabad. Water levels are also expected to rise in the Jhelum, Ravi and Kabul rivers and their tributaries as monsoon activity intensifies. Officials cautioned that streams connected to the Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi rivers could swell to medium or high levels. Meanwhile, water flows in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers will largely depend on releases from reservoirs across the border. The authority also expressed concern over the possibility of flash floods in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, as well as seasonal streams in central and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan. In addition, urban flooding and waterlogging remain a serious threat in several cities, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta and other parts of Sindh due to continued heavy rainfall. The NDMA advised residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways, monitor weather updates before travelling, and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities. It also encouraged the public to use the official Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for real-time weather warnings and emergency information. Separately, the Prime Minister’s Emergency Response Committee (ERC) held its 10th consecutive daily review meeting to assess the country’s monsoon situation. The meeting, chaired virtually by Planning Minister Prof Ahsan Iqbal, brought together federal ministries, provincial governments, disaster management authorities and senior administrative officials. During the briefing, the NDMA presented the latest updates on weather conditions, casualties, infrastructure damage, rescue operations and rehabilitation efforts. Officials informed the committee that deputy commissioners in all high-risk districts had already been directed to remain fully prepared for any emergency. The committee was told that recent heavy rains had caused flooding in multiple regions, with coordinated rescue and relief operations continuing through federal, provincial and district authorities. Weather experts also forecast more rainfall across northern and central Pakistan in the coming days, while isolated showers are expected in southeastern Sindh. The NDMA highlighted that relief activities are being carried out with the support of both national and international humanitarian organisations. Officials further noted that most monsoon-related fatalities this season resulted from the collapse of unsafe and poorly constructed buildings, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations and greater public awareness. The ERC commended the efforts of government institutions, provincial administrations, district authorities, the armed forces and rescue teams for their ongoing response. It directed all relevant departments to strengthen coordination, maintain maximum preparedness, accelerate relief and rehabilitation work, and take preventive measures to minimise the impact of future weather emergencies.

    WASHINGTON: The US Navy has begun testing a new low-cost unmanned underwater vehicle designed to travel more than 2,000 nautical miles, marking another step in the development of long-endurance autonomous maritime technology. According to US media reports, the new underwater drone, known as HADALUS, has been developed for missions that require long periods of operation without a crew on board. Its developers say the system could offer a lower-cost alternative to other vehicles in the same category. The 34-foot-long vehicle features a carbon-fibre outer structure and has a cross-section of about six feet. It is equipped with sonar and other electronic systems intended to support underwater operations and data collection. The reported range of more than 2,000 nautical miles is among the system’s most notable features. Such endurance could allow an unmanned vehicle to operate over considerable distances before returning to its launch area or requiring further support. The US Navy has increasingly explored unmanned maritime systems as a way to expand underwater surveillance and other capabilities while reducing the need to place personnel directly in potentially hazardous environments. The HADALUS trials will help assess how the vehicle performs in real-world conditions, including its endurance, navigation, communications and onboard systems.
