Shifa specialists join Imran’s eye assessment

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has confirmed that two specialists from Shifa International Hospital were involved in the eye examination of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan.

According to a statement issued by PIMS on Saturday, Imran Khan was brought to the Islamabad hospital during the night between August 20 and 21 for a medical examination and treatment.

The institute said the ophthalmological assessment was carried out with the participation of two Shifa International specialists. Other required examinations were conducted by doctors at PIMS.

PIMS said the findings from the eye assessment were reviewed alongside the results of investigations conducted by its own medical specialists. A medical board consisting of PIMS doctors subsequently compiled the overall medical fitness report.

However, the institute said it would not make the contents of the medical report public.

PIMS cited patient confidentiality as well as directions issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for withholding the details of the report.

The clarification comes amid controversy over the treatment and medical care being provided to Imran Khan, who is currently detained at Adiala Jail.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court had directed that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for treatment for several days. The court also ordered the government to facilitate weekly meetings between him and his family.

The Supreme Court further directed authorities to provide access to Imran’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan. It ordered the formation of a medical board that would include an ophthalmologist, general physician and cardiologist, along with Dr Sultan.

The government subsequently filed a review petition against the court’s order, describing the decision as discriminatory.

Confusion arose later when reports suggested that Imran Khan was being moved from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar later said that the former prime minister had instead been taken to PIMS because of security concerns surrounding Shifa Hospital and the route leading to it.

Tarar said doctors from Shifa International were also present during the medical examination at PIMS. After the examination, Imran Khan was declared medically fit and taken back to Adiala Jail.

The development has drawn further attention from PTI and Imran Khan’s family, who have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and medical treatment.

Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, also spoke publicly after meeting him and alleged that he was facing severe injustice and mistreatment.

    Europe’s hottest town faces a new heat lockdown

    FLORIDIA, Sicily: In the Sicilian town of Floridia, extreme heat is no longer simply a matter of breaking temperature records. It is increasingly shaping how people work, socialise, raise children and make a living. Five years after a nearby rural area recorded Europe’s highest officially recognised temperature of 48.8 degrees Celsius, residents say scorching summers have become a defining part of everyday life. The August 2021 temperature, measured in Monasteri about five kilometres from Floridia, transformed the town of around 20,000 people into a symbol of Europe’s rapidly warming climate. The World Meteorological Organisation certified the reading in 2024 as the highest temperature recorded in continental Europe. Many residents initially believed the extraordinary heat was an isolated event. Instead, they say, prolonged heatwaves have become increasingly common. Today, Floridia’s streets and public squares can remain almost deserted during the hottest hours. Piazza del Popolo, traditionally a gathering place filled with cafes and residents, has lost much of its daytime bustle. “It’s awful because many people end up shut indoors. In a way, we are all experiencing another kind of lockdown,” Floridia culture councillor Serena Spada told Reuters. The heat is also disrupting one of Sicily’s cherished traditions — “pigghiari u frescu”, when families sit outside their homes in the evening to enjoy cooler air and socialise. But even nights are becoming less comfortable. Heat That Refuses to Let Up The concern among climate experts is not limited to isolated temperature records. They say the more significant warning is the persistent rise in average temperatures. Reuters Climate Monitor data showed Floridia reached 33.3C on August 12, 2026 — 4.1C above the average for the 1961-1990 historical period. Luigi Pasotti, director of Sicily’s Agrometeorological Information Service, said temperatures were increasingly remaining elevated for weeks rather than producing only short-lived peaks. “We are no longer talking about extreme temperature peaks lasting one or two days, as happened in 2021,” he said. “We are talking about entire weeks, even months during which temperatures remain consistently high.” The nights are also becoming warmer, with Sicily experiencing increasing numbers of tropical and super-tropical nights, according to Pasotti. For residents, the consequences are tangible. Ugo Tomasello recalled struggling to breathe while walking during an earlier heatwave and fearing he might collapse with nobody nearby to help him. Agriculture Under Pressure Sicily’s changing climate is also threatening livelihoods. The island has faced a combination of heatwaves, drought, wildfires and intense storms. A Legambiente analysis based on EFFIS-Copernicus data found Sicily accounted for roughly 70 per cent of southern Italy’s burned area between January and July. Agriculture, a major pillar of the island’s economy, is particularly vulnerable. Beekeepers around Floridia have experienced some of the most painful consequences. In 2021, more than 3,000 beehives were lost in the area and honey production plunged by about 80 per cent. Francesco Pappalardo, a 33-year-old beekeeper who began working with his father as a child, said summer has become a period of anxiety. “The heat can cause individual colonies to collapse and sometimes entire apiaries can be lost,” he said. Agronomist Francesco Bellomi warned that declining bee populations, fewer beekeepers, loss of pollinators and pesticide use are contributing to reduced biodiversity and threatening agricultural yields. Floridia’s experience reflects a wider European trend in which climate change is making extreme weather more frequent and disruptive. For residents of this once-record-breaking Sicilian town, however, climate change is no longer an abstract scientific debate. It is felt in empty streets, sleepless nights, lost livelihoods and children forced indoors. The 48.8C record may still stand, but for Floridia’s residents, the more worrying question is how long the heat will remain.

    Dar urges SCO action against Afghan terrorism

    Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has called on member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to strengthen regional cooperation against terrorism, saying lasting peace and economic development cannot be achieved unless militant groups operating from Afghan territory are effectively eliminated. Addressing the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Dar said Pakistan remains committed to regional peace and wants to see Afghanistan emerge as a peaceful, stable, regionally connected and economically prosperous country. He said a secure Afghanistan would benefit not only Pakistan but all SCO member states and the wider region. The foreign minister described terrorism originating from Afghan territory as one of the most serious security challenges facing Pakistan. He said militant organisations continue to use Afghan soil for recruitment, training and planning attacks, creating persistent threats to regional stability. Dar said Pakistan has suffered heavily from terrorism in recent years. According to him, more than 560 Pakistanis have lost their lives in over 2,000 terrorist incidents since the beginning of this year. He added that investigations into several attacks had also identified the involvement of Afghan nationals. He urged the SCO to play a more active role in addressing the security situation and called on the Afghan authorities to honour their international commitments against terrorism. He stressed that no country’s territory should be allowed to serve as a base for militant activities targeting neighbouring states. Speaking about the SCO, Dar said the organisation has developed into one of the region’s most important platforms for cooperation over the past 25 years. He noted that it now promotes collaboration not only in security but also in trade, economic development, connectivity, culture and regional stability. Looking ahead, Dar said the organisation should place greater emphasis on digital development, technological cooperation, innovation and energy security to meet future regional challenges and promote sustainable economic growth among member states. Turning to the Middle East, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect remain the only effective means of resolving international disputes. He said peaceful negotiations are essential for achieving lasting regional peace and preventing further conflict. He also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. Dar said Pakistan played an important role in encouraging direct engagement between the two countries, leading to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year. He described the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement and encouraged the international community to build on the progress made through continued negotiations. On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Dar held separate meetings with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing regional cooperation and expanding collaboration through multilateral organisations. During his meeting with Wang Yi, both leaders reviewed Pakistan-China relations and exchanged views on regional developments. The Chinese foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote regional peace and extended best wishes for Pakistan’s upcoming chairmanship of the SCO for 2026-27.

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the recently signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as a significant step towards greater regional unity and peace, saying the pact has brought the three countries closer. The prime minister made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley, who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad. The Makkah agreement was signed on Aug 7 by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Makkah. The agreement provides a framework for stronger collective defence cooperation and states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all. Sharif said the agreement had further strengthened the strategic relationship among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye while conveying a message of unity and peace across the region. The prime minister also stressed that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia should now build on their strategic partnership by expanding economic and agricultural cooperation. He said stronger trade and investment ties could help transform the longstanding relationship between the two countries into a broader and more mutually beneficial economic partnership. Focus on agriculture and food security Agriculture emerged as a key area of discussion during the meeting, with both sides reviewing ways to increase cooperation in agricultural productivity, technology, research and development, and efficient water management. Sharif expressed satisfaction with the ongoing cooperation over Pakistani agricultural exports to Saudi Arabia. He said Islamabad was keen to expand the range and volume of agricultural products supplied to the Kingdom. Pakistan has increasingly sought to strengthen its economic relationship with Saudi Arabia beyond traditional financial and energy cooperation, with agriculture and food security offering significant opportunities for both sides. The prime minister announced that a delegation of Pakistani agricultural experts would soon travel to Riyadh to continue discussions and explore practical areas of cooperation. The delegation is expected to focus on improving agricultural productivity through modern technology, research and more efficient use of water resources. The Saudi minister, meanwhile, reaffirmed Riyadh’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan in agriculture, water management and food security, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. A broader strategic partnership The meeting reflects Islamabad’s effort to translate its close political and strategic ties with Riyadh into greater commercial and economic engagement. Saudi Arabia has historically remained one of Pakistan’s most important partners, providing financial support and assistance during periods of economic pressure. In recent years, however, both countries have increasingly emphasised investment, trade and private-sector partnerships. The latest discussions also come shortly after the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, which marked a new phase in security cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Pakistan’s Foreign Office has described the agreement as defensive in nature, saying it is intended to strengthen collective deterrence and promote regional peace and stability rather than target any particular country. For Islamabad, the challenge now will be to convert the political momentum generated by the Makkah pact into tangible economic gains. The planned visit by Pakistani agricultural experts to Riyadh could provide an early test of that approach, particularly as both countries seek greater cooperation in food security, water management, agricultural technology and exports. The meeting therefore carried significance beyond diplomatic messaging, highlighting Pakistan and Saudi Arabia’s shared interest in developing a relationship that combines strategic cooperation with stronger economic ties. As regional security concerns continue to shape diplomacy in the Middle East and beyond, Islamabad appears keen to present the Makkah pact not simply as a defence arrangement, but as part of a wider push for stability, cooperation and closer partnerships among the three countries.
