US senator demands answers over USS Abraham Lincoln deployment

WASHINGTON: US Senator Richard Blumenthal has called on the Pentagon to explain why the USS Abraham Lincoln has remained at sea for more than 250 days, raising concerns about the health, safety and readiness of thousands of sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier.

Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, sent a letter to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao seeking detailed information about the carrier’s prolonged deployment.

The senator said the USS Abraham Lincoln left Naval Base San Diego on November 21, 2025, for what was originally expected to be a seven-month mission. Its deployment was scheduled to end in May but has since been extended, with no publicly announced date for its return.

According to Blumenthal, the carrier has spent more than 200 consecutive days without a port visit, setting a record for the length of time it has remained at sea without such a stop.

The prolonged deployment has triggered concerns about conditions aboard the carrier, including reported shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing problems and difficulties with mail deliveries.

Blumenthal also raised concerns about the mental health and morale of crew members, as well as deck safety and general living conditions.

He said reports of fatigue, deferred maintenance and limited opportunities for rest could increase the risks faced by personnel working aboard an aircraft carrier.

The USS Abraham Lincoln carries around 5,000 sailors and Marines and operates in an environment involving aircraft, fuel, weapons, heavy machinery and complex electrical systems. Blumenthal warned that prolonged exposure to these conditions could create additional safety risks if crews are exhausted or equipment maintenance is delayed.

The senator asked the Pentagon to provide information about reported habitability problems aboard the carrier, including issues involving hygiene supplies, mould, toilets, laundry facilities and water systems.

He also requested details about the Navy’s measures for monitoring crew fatigue, morale, mental health and operational readiness.

Blumenthal wants officials to disclose whether the extended deployment has been linked to increases in safety incidents, medical problems or disciplinary cases.

Reports cited by US military publications have also described incidents in which sailors aboard the carrier allegedly attempted to go overboard during its prolonged deployment, intensifying concerns about the psychological pressure on personnel.

The senator has asked the Navy to explain what measures are being taken to address such concerns and protect the wellbeing of the crew.

The extended deployment comes as the United States continues military operations and maintains a significant naval presence connected to tensions involving Iran and the wider Middle East.

Blumenthal questioned the Pentagon about the strategic purpose of keeping the carrier deployed for such an extended period.

He asked officials to explain the military objectives linked to the Lincoln’s continued presence in the region and how the Navy determines whether the carrier remains operationally necessary.

The senator also sought details about every extension of the carrier’s deployment, including who approved the extensions and what operational requirements were cited.

He further questioned whether the Navy’s existing fleet structure and deployment system can maintain the current demand for aircraft carriers without undermining crew welfare, equipment readiness and future maintenance requirements.

Blumenthal warned that maintaining a high operational tempo for an extended period could create a readiness problem in the future if the impact on personnel and equipment is not properly addressed.

Oil surges above $83 as Strait of Hormuz tensions …

Global oil prices continued their upward momentum on Friday, with Brent crude climbing above $83 per barrel as renewed tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz heightened concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies. Brent crude futures gained 1.1 percent to reach $83.48 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose by 85 cents to $78.84 per barrel. The latest rally marks a sharp reversal from earlier this week, when crude prices had declined amid expectations that diplomatic efforts between Iran and Oman could ease regional tensions and pave the way for smoother maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. However, investor sentiment shifted after reports that Iran, in coordination with Oman, proposed new restrictions on shipping through the strategic waterway. The proposal reportedly includes banning vessels belonging to countries considered hostile from passing through the strait and imposing substantial financial penalties on ships that violate the proposed regulations. The renewed uncertainty over one of the world’s most important oil transit routes has reignited fears of supply disruptions, prompting traders to push oil prices higher despite earlier forecasts predicting further declines. Analysts say developments in the Strait of Hormuz will remain a key factor influencing global energy markets in the coming days.

Kristen Stewart’s video misused to spread false claims about Robert Pattinson reunion

A clip of Kristen Stewart is making rounds online. It comes with a caption falsely claiming she wants to rekindle things with ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson. The caption even suggests she would leave her spouse to make that happen. The video itself is from an old interview. In it, Stewart discusses something entirely unrelated to Pattinson. She talks about the value of public embarrassment. She says she considers herself lucky to have had moments of falling flat on her face publicly. A healthy dose of humiliation, she adds, keeps a person grounded. Despite this, the clip was recirculated with a fabricated caption. It claims Stewart broke down in tears, confessing that cheating on Pattinson remains her biggest regret. The caption alleges she still thinks about him. It even claims she’d divorce her husband for one more chance at being with him. The claim falls apart quickly. For starters, Stewart is not married to a husband at all. She came out publicly as gay in February 2017. In April 2025, she married screenwriter Dylan Meyer. The two have since spoken openly about their relationship. Recent interviews show Stewart in a happy place, both personally and professionally. She has collaborated with Meyer on creative projects, while continuing to focus on her work behind the camera as a director. Friends close to the couple have described their marriage as steady, with both partners actively supporting one another’s careers. The misleading video appears to be piggybacking on an old, real story from Stewart’s past. Back in 2012, she publicly apologized after being caught in an affair with Rupert Sanders. Sanders directed her in Snow White and the Huntsman. At the time, Stewart was still in a relationship with Pattinson. She addressed the situation publicly and expressed sincere regret. That moment became widely publicized and has followed her in tabloid coverage for years since. Nothing in her recent interviews or public statements supports the idea that she wants to reunite with Pattinson. There is also no indication of her considering ending her marriage over it. The viral claim appears to be a case of an old clip stripped of context, then paired with an entirely invented narrative to drive engagement. Such recycled clips are a common tactic online, where old footage is repurposed with misleading captions to spark outrage or attract clicks, often at the expense of the public figure’s actual words and intent.

More than 10,000 police personnel have been assigned to provide security. Roads and streets connected to the procession route have been secured with barriers and barbed wire, while surveillance is being carried out through CCTV cameras, drones and sniper deployment on high-rise buildings. Officials said 43 Smart Safe City centres across Punjab are monitoring processions in real time. In Lahore alone, more than 800 surveillance cameras are being used to monitor processions, religious gatherings and other sensitive locations. Additional portable smart cameras have also been installed to strengthen security. In Rawalpindi, the central Chehlum procession commenced from Imambargah Ashiq Hussain under heightened security, with police and other law enforcement agencies deployed throughout the route. In Quetta, two major processions were taken out from Alamdar Road and Hazara Town to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala. More than 1,700 police personnel, supported by the Frontier Corps (FC), have been deployed to maintain law and order. Authorities sealed procession routes and intensified security checks at entry and exit points. CCTV cameras are monitoring the routes, while a Quick Response Force has been stationed at multiple locations to respond to any emergency. As part of the security measures, mobile phone and internet services have been temporarily suspended in several areas of Quetta. Across the country, law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to ensure the peaceful conclusion of Chehlum processions. Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with security personnel and follow official instructions to help maintain peace and public safety during the religious observance.
